PHARMACEUTICALS
Formulation for Biopharmaceutical Applications Formulation is helpful in a wide variety of industries and settings. To name just a few, these include pharmaceutical laboratories, research and development laboratories, new product development (such as cosmetics and hair dyes), food production, beer brewing and much more. Smaller laboratories may rely on handwritten records to retain formulas, noting ingredients, weights and other properties. Transcription errors or even poor handwriting may cause incorrect values to be recorded, resulting in unusable materials and wasted time. A balance that stores formulations, or even connecting the weighing device to a PC with LIMS software, greatly reduces the risk of error, as well as provides documentation and traceability. Our Solis range of semi-micro, analytical and precision balances offer formulation, data communication and percentage weighing that simplify scaling and quality control. Solis balances can store up to 99 ingredients for complex compounds. In addition to single formulation, users can store custom formulas
and recipes in the balance’s database to conveniently retrieve them when needed. The high-resolution graphic display clearly shows results and menu prompts to intuitively guide users through the many functions available on the Solis, including formulation. When formulas are measured and stored, they can be sent to computers, printers and LIMS via the Solis’ RS-232 interface for GLPcompliant printouts and exports. To help with repetitive measuring tasks, Solis balances feature check-weighing with an audible alarm so users can simply load compounds until the balance beeps. Titration – a straightforward method with many application possibilities Because of their simplicity and accuracy, titration methods are used for a large proportion of the content determinations described in the monographs. Metrohm has developed hundreds of titration methods with Metrosensors based on the US Pharmacopeia (USP<541>) and European Pharmacopoeia. These methods include aqueous and non-aqueous acid-base titrations, as well as redox, surfactant and photometric titrations. Titrations using colour indicators are widely used in pharmacopeias. When performed manually, the results depend, quite literally, on the eye of the beholder. Photometric titration using the Optrode

makes it possible to replace this subjective determination of the equivalence point with an objective process that is completely independent of the human eye. The great advantage of this is that the chemistry does not change - that is, the standard operation procedure generally does not have to be adapted.
