The ‘boxed’ solution

LABOTEC (PTY) LTD The judging panel is an unbiased international collective of individuals, with backgrounds from a myriad of fields, such as business, economy, politics, media, journalism, history and education. Our team of mechanical engineers and designers at AFMS produced a compact, airconditioned ‘boxed’ solution, offering vaccines to immunocompromised patients. This designed concept is based on the recently updated WHO, FDA and CDC guidance concerning vaccines. The ‘boxed’ solution consists of a tailored 3.5-ton self-braking, twinaxle, off-road durable framework with retractable aluminium steps and levelling jacks. The internal layout of the facility includes 10m² medical-grade floor area housing the furniture and chest fridges. These operate from the main grid power or generator power, with an automatic switch-over to the off-grid 2kVA solar battery system, which is capable of running the entire facility. This system further ensures that all priority power is dedicated to the chest freezers to guarantee safe storage of the vaccines. The solar system has remote login capability with a 4G internet connection, which allows real-time monitoring of the equipment load and facility electrical storage capacity.

The control system allows for constant and real-time temperature monitoring, which provides the user continuous temperature feedback regarding the stored vaccines. Furthermore, this system provides an early warning in case the temperatures reach excess ranges, utilising a GSM or remote SMS alert system. This compact plug-and-play solution has been specially designed to reach South African citizens living in secluded and underserved areas that do not have the means to get to a vaccination facility or a general medical centre. This setup makes it easy and feasible for a medical team to reach these out-of-the-way areas and provide medical treatment to those in need. Fluoride ISE launched Metrohm is pleased to launch the Fluoride ISE (Fluoride Ion Selective Electrode), a dedicated sensor for selective measurements of fluoride. The new sensor combines the measuring electrode, the reference electrode, and a temperature sensor in a space-saving design, making it ideal for measurements in small sample volumes. The new sensor is available both in an analog and a digital version. For stable signals and reproducible results even in contaminated samples, the Fluoride ISE features a ground-joint diaphragm with a large surface providing consistent electrolyte outflow, reducing the risk of a blocked diaphragm.

As the potential in the sample solution is influenced by the temperature, the Fluoride ISE features an integrated temperature sensor to determine the temperature of both the calibration and the sample solution.
