ADDRESSING INDUSTRY CHALLENGES
A growing concern regarding hazardous materials in products sold by retailers remains top of mind. Benn stressed the need for compliance from suppliers to ensure safety. However, misinformation that is circulated by non-members not privy to member information often creates confusion. The urgency of the upcoming lead regulations compliance by March 17 is around the corner. She also indicated the need for the establishment of a professional body for continued professional development among industry leaders.
There appears to be a positive shift in member engagement, with increased participation in initiatives and a focus on developing a learning management system to track training and development, particularly beneficial for smaller companies. The organisation aims to counter misinformation spread by non-members through improved communication strategies, including
BP008-5.pdf 1 2024/08/30 14:26
social media and its revamped website.
Additionally, a whistleblower platform might be in the pipeline to allow anonymous reporting of unethical practices, ensuring concerns are addressed properly. The relationship with the Consumer Goods and Services sector emphasises a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for handling complaints related to paint management.
FUTURE PLANS AND STRATEGIC GOALS
Looking ahead to 2025, SAPMA aims to strengthen member infrastructure for self-reliance and efficiency, identify subject matter experts for strategic roles, and recognise excellence among professionals in the coatings industry. The organisation plans to enhance member engagement through forums and continuous professional development (CPD) initiatives.
Key industry trends anticipated for 2025 include shipping and port issues, which SAPMA intends to address by
keeping members informed to ensure a steady supply of raw materials. The Association further commits to keep the industry challenges on the government’s radar – especially the water scarcity that the country’s economic hub is facing.
CONCLUSION
SAPMA remains committed to enhancing member involvement, addressing industry challenges, and fostering proactive communication and engagement. With a clear vision for the future, SAPMA is well positioned to continue its positive impact on the coatings sector. c

Routing – Automotive Colour Theme for 2024/25
Every year, designers from BASF’s Coatings division create a new collection of colours to inspire automotive designers around the globe. 'ROUTING', the title of the 2024-2025 Automotive Colour Trends, refers to the concept of 'routing' in communication technology which signifies how information is transmitted.
“In our trend observations, we have identified the way we communicate and handle information with human or non-human intelligence as a strong driver for trend developments,” said Mark Gutjahr, global head of Automotive Colour Design at BASF. “Communication is lively, everchanging, and mutually receptive – just like colours.”
REFLECTING THE EVOLVING NATURE OF COMMUNICATION
ROUTING reflects the evolving nature of communication through a diverse palette of colours, backed by key statements from BASF’s design experts. This year's trends feature new reds with intense purple shades, signifying a shift from darker and blueish reds. The dark achromatic colours have been energised by intense colour effects, offering dynamism beyond solid black. Fine metallic effects are particularly characterised by strong effects on the surface, which give metallics new radiance. The spectrum of pastel colours continues to diversify, for example in beige and light green tones already available in the market, as well as in unusual intermediate tones.
Sustainability and functionality remain
core themes in ROUTING, with colours developed using renewable, recycled, and bio-based materials, and optimised for sensor-based driving systems.
As automotive OEM customers rely on the BASF colour trends for designing automotive colours for their future models, end customers may see the new direction on the road or in their driveways within the next three to five model years.
A DEEP BLACK HUE ENLIGHTENED BY SUSTAINABILITY
In EMEA, HARBINGER’S INK emerges as a powerful key colour based on the awareness that natural resources are finite. With a unique and unseen sparkle effect, this strong black colour is enhanced by the combination of carbonnegative and renewable components, as well as biodegradable pigments.
“HARBINGER’S INK represents the crucial integration of environmental responsibility into automotive design,” explains Gutjahr. “It signs the deal for a direct connection from a strong colour position to a sustainable concept.”
METALLIC AND SUSTAINABLE CONCEPTS ON A NEW PATH
SCINTILLATION stands out in Asia Pacific with its smart warm grey and liquid metal effect designed by a novel, low-emission basecoat technology. This colour implies the future affinity between human and non-human intelligence and enhances the brand value of high-end vehicles and their quality and sustainability.
“SCINTILLATION captures the region’s drive for refined yet forward-looking design,” notes Chiharu Matsuhara, head of Automotive Colour Design for Asia Pacific. “It aligns with the region’s focus
on creating high-quality, sustainable automotive solutions that resonate with both technological advancement and enduring values.”
WHERE DUAL HUES APPEAR TO SYNTHESISE AS ONE
In the Americas, Holding Sway is a prominent colour symbolising the fusion of two shades and the harmony of cooperative energies. This colour features an intense purple shade with strong blueish shift effect. “In various facets of society, diverse influences come together and inspire innovative solutions for products. By creating connections and bridging opposites, new opportunities and spaces emerge for the way people consume, communicate, and experience mobility,” elaborates Lizzie-Marie, lead colour designer for the Americas. “In HOLDING SWAY, the value of transparent and cooperative energies merging to form innovative paths are symbolised.”
COLOUR EXPERTISE OF BASF COATINGS
Every year, the designers of BASF’s Coatings division study future trends which they use as foundation for the development of surface, texture, and colour positions from a wide range of areas, including industry, fashion, consumer products, nature, and technology. The research is then shared with BASF's automotive customers to drive future mass production plans.
In 2024, ZENOMENON and EFFLORESCENCE, two colours designed by BASF and included in recent colour trends collections, were recognised by the Red Dot Design Award, one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. c

Water scarcity in SA threatens the future of the paint manufacturing sector
Water scarcity is an escalating concern in South Africa and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. As we move forward, the situation is expected to worsen, posing significant challenges for various industries, including paint manufacturing. This article delves into the concerns around water scarcity, its potential impact on paint manufacturers, and the broader implications for the industry.
South Africa is classified as a water-scarce country, with an average annual rainfall of about 450mm, significantly lower than the global average of 860mm. The country’s water resources are unevenly distributed, with some regions experiencing severe droughts. Factors contributing to water scarcity include climate change, population growth, urbanisation, and inefficient water management practices.
Water is a critical ingredient in paint manufacturing, used in various stages of production, including mixing, cleaning, and cooling processes. The increasing water scarcity poses several challenges for paint manufacturers:
1. Increased production costs
Alternative water supply: In the event of water supply interruptions, manufacturers may need to resort to alternative water sources, such as trucking in water.
Wage compensation: Additional costs may arise from wage compensation for extra shifts needed to catch up on lost production time.
Customer retention measures: Sales measures for customer information, compensation, and retention could also add to the costs.
2. Production disruptions
Temporary shutdowns: Severe water shortages could lead to temporary shutdowns of production lines, disrupting the entire manufacturing process and potentially delaying product deliveries.
– Volume shifts: While some companies have flexible production systems that allow for shifting volumes between plants, this is not a long-term solution and can only mitigate the impact to a certain extent.
3. Quality control issues
Process water quality: The quality of water used in the manufacturing process is crucial. Any compromise in water quality due to scarcity could affect the final product quality, leading to potential rework and increased waste.
WHAT CAN BE DONE?
South Africa has recently managed
to largely put loadshedding behind it. Unfortunately, it would appear that a new challenge is on the horizon. The reality is that unless solutions are implemented immediately, waiting until the situation becomes untenable could be disastrous. Companies can consider some of the following ideas:
Water efficiency investments: Investing in water-efficient technologies can significantly reduce water consumption.
Rainwater harvesting: Installing rainwater harvesting systems can help collect and utilise rainwater, reducing dependency on municipal water supplies. This approach has been successfully implemented in other regions and can be adapted to the South African context.
Recycling and reuse: Implementing cascade systems that allow contaminated process water to be reused multiple times can significantly reduce freshwater consumption.
Contingency planning: Developing specific contingency plans, including the provision of water via trucks and the ability to shift production volumes between plants, can help mitigate the impact of water supply interruptions. Companies should also consider investing in water storage facilities to ensure a continuous supply during periods of scarcity.
BROADER IMPLICATIONS FOR THE INDUSTRY
The impact of water scarcity extends beyond individual manufacturers, affecting the entire paint and coatings industry. Key implications include:
Supply chain disruptions: Water scarcity can disrupt the supply chain, affecting the availability of raw materials and components required for paint manufacturing. Regulatory compliance: Stringent environmental regulations regarding water usage and waste management are likely to increase. Companies must stay ahead of regulatory changes and invest in sustainable practices to ensure compliance and avoid penalties.
Market dynamics: Water scarcity can influence market dynamics, with companies that adopt sustainable practices gaining a competitive edge. Consumers are increasingly demanding eco-friendly products, and companies that prioritise sustainability are likely to attract more customers.
Economic impact: Increased production costs, potential shutdowns, and supply chain disruptions can affect profitability. Companies need to develop strategic plans to navigate these economic challenges.
Water scarcity in South Africa and the SADC region is a pressing concern for the paint manufacturing sector. The increasing scarcity of water could lead to major disruption; however, companies can act now. Investment in waterefficient technologies, implementing rainwater harvesting systems, recycling,
and reusing water, and developing robust contingency plans, companies can stay ahead of the looming water challenges.
As we move forward, it is crucial for the paint manufacturing sector to prioritise water conservation and sustainability. By doing so, companies can ensure their long-term viability and contribute to the broader goal of sustainable development in South Africa and the SADC region. c

NOTICE: Husbands choosing paint colours must have a signed note from their spouses!
By Dr Ivor Blumenthal, SAPMA/SCEA
Gentlemen, put down the paintbrushes. Ladies, grab your pens.
Ah, the eternal struggle of home improvement. It's a battleground where many brave men have ventured, armed with nothing, but a paint swatch and the misguided belief that they have impeccable taste. But let's be honest – how many of us have returned from the paint store with a colour that was supposed to be 'Cosy Warmth' but ended up looking more like 'Faded Mustard Disaster'? Too many to count, my friends, too many to count.
In light of these ongoing catastrophes, a new policy has been put into place: Husbands choosing paint colours must have a signed note from their spouses with permission to choose those colours. Yes, you read that correctly. And no, this isn't a joke. (Well, actually, it kind of is, but you get the point.)
WHY THIS POLICY?
It's not that we don't trust your instincts, dear husbands. It's just that... well, we don't trust your instincts. You might think you're nailing that 'seafoam green' for the bathroom, but your spouse sees it as the colour equivalent of a bad 80s prom dress. And no one wants that in their house – unless you're secretly trying to create a time capsule of questionable decisions.
Consider this: The last time you chose a colour, it may have looked great on the tiny square sample, but as soon as it hit the wall, it transformed into something completely different. The living room that was supposed to be a soothing 'Autumn Haze' turned into 'Ominous Cheeto’. And don't even get us started on the bedroom that ended up looking like a strawberry milkshake exploded.
THE SIGNED NOTE: YOUR LIFELINE
Now, before you roll your eyes and say,
"But honey, I've got this!" – let's talk about the importance of the signed note. This isn't just a permission slip; it's a lifeline. It's your guarantee that when you walk into that paint store, you're equipped with the full backing of someone who knows the difference between 'eggshell' and 'antique white’.
Here’s how to get it right:
Step 1: Discuss the colour options with your spouse. Listen to their vision, their desires.
Step 2: Narrow down the swatches together. This is a joint mission.
Step 3: Get that note. And we're not talking about a simple "Sure, go ahead." No, no. We mean a written, signed, and possibly notarised statement saying,
AVOIDING COMMON PAINT PITFALLS
To help you on your quest for colour approval, here are a few tips:
Don't go rogue: Stick to the colour palette you both agreed on. Veering offcourse is how 'Peachy Delight' ends up as 'Day-Glo Disaster’.
Seek professional advice: If you’re really unsure, bring in a professional. Or at least, bring along a friend whose house doesn’t resemble a box of melted crayons .
Test before you commit: Buy a small sample pot and paint a section of the wall first.
This way, if it looks terrible, you can quietly repaint before anyone notices.
THE CONSEQUENCES OF IGNORING THE POLICY
Should you choose to ignore this new policy and embark on a solo mission to paint-picking, beware. The consequences could be severe:
The silent treatment: When your spouse walks in and sees the colour you 'thought would work’, expect silence. Long, uncomfortable silence.
A weekend of repainting: That’s right, get ready to spend your Saturday covering up your mistake –with the colour your spouse wanted in the first place.
Endless teasing: Every time a guest compliments the room, you'll be reminded of 'the time you chose Cheeto Orange’. And trust me, they'll never let you live it down.
IN CONCLUSION
Husbands, this new policy isn't about limiting your creative freedom – it's about protecting your home from becoming a cautionary tale.
With that signed note in hand, you'll not only avoid a design disaster but also score major points for being a considerate partner. c
