Recovery, recovery, recovery South Africa is a one-of-a-kind nation. Irrespective of all of our challenges, we are a resilient country. The March 2020 edition of Coatings was the last issue we printed and circulated before the devastating pandemic hit. What followed in April and May was the first zero-value turnover months for many coatings’ companies. Following the news through the various levels of the pandemic, somewhere around 4-million jobs were lost. I am sure the number is higher. But, reading the news yesterday, as the first vaccines are delivered in South Africa, 2-million jobs have been recovered and that number is growing. Across industries this seems to be the trend, job offers are popping up, business is strengthening, and industry is growing. Do not get me wrong, I am sure we will have our challenges along the way, but what is exciting, is that our industry is on its way to a better 2021, and this is on the back of the coatings industry’s exceptional performance

ed’s note

through August to December 2020. With each vaccination, our road to recovery will become more concrete and our Johann Gerber businesses will take one step closer to a secure future. For your own business and its future, training and the development of your staff has to be at the forefront of your recovery strategy. SAPMA has launched an online training facility – Tara Benn from SAPMA – shares more in her Executive Letter to the industry on page 4. Use this innovative platform to your company’s best ability to ensure you and your team has a record recovery.

For your own business and its future, training and the development of your sta has to be at the forefront of your recovery strategy.

From the Executive Director’s desk

Online video training to be offered in 3 phases Following an increasing call for training, SAPMA will this year be launching a range of specially-developed training videos in a user-friendly form, accessible to all our members. The concise videos, around 35 minutes in length, cover a broad range of subjects and are all aimed at sharing knowledge and educating the coatings industry.

T

he training videos will be available via links to the SAPMA membership in return for a small, annual licence fee. There will be no assessments and certification is available in standard form, but this can be arranged should a SAPMA member require it. The launch date for the first phase, covering: 1. Interior tiles 2. New metal roofs 3. Painting exterior walls (HD version) 4. Gutters and downpipes 5. Painting interior rhino board ceilings 6. Painting walls with minor defects 7. Palisade fencing 8. Roof tiles 9. Steel window frames 10. Varnishing wood.

The above topics are already available. SAPMA will then, as part of the second phase of the training initiative, provide video tuition focussed on colour to provide the industry with more in-depth knowledge about the important role of colour in coatings. To be launched around mid-2021, this training is particularly useful for industry members involved in colour tinting. Finally, in the third phase of the

training programme, the target audience is broad and includes virtually all individuals in the coatings sector. For this phase, SAPMA has adapted the existing training course for administrative staff to make it more interactive and easily accessible online. The training offered provides a basic understanding of surface coatings, their components, and what makes one paint different to others. Many of our members have pleaded for more emphasis on online training. We hope this video tuition facility will help to answer this call and look forward to strong support. c For more information, please email tara@sapma.org.za.

BASF colour report The BASF Colour Report 2020 for Automotive OEM Coatings shows the automotive colour palette shifting in unconventional ways, unveiling a wider range of chromatic colours rolling off the world’s assembly lines.

D

iverse shades such as blue and yellow are making gains in some regions, while red and violet are slowly cutting the lead held by the achromatic colours in other parts of the world. The expanding colour spaces made the overall spectrum broader than 2019 and added a flash of brilliance. Despite the shift in colours, the achromatic colours – white, black, silver, and grey – followed a familiar pattern, coating the majority of the vehicles produced. As it has been for several years, white is still the most popular car

colour around the world. It has a classic, timeless beauty, and a connection to both the environment and high technology. The data cited throughout this report shows lower total vehicle production than past years. It includes times when automakers had to

shut down due to Covid-19. The global pandemic has deeply affected the mobility economy and the world. c

Nouryon launches ingredient to improve anti-viral paint Nouryon has launched Arquad GS, an innovative, environmentally friendly antimicrobial agent that enables the formulation of a robust and tintable anti-viral paint. Nouryon unveiled Arquad GS to Asian markets during the CHINACOAT show with other regions to follow.

T

he introduction of this new product is important given the increased emphasis on surface cleanliness and germ prevention as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Research indicates that demand for hygienic coatings is expected to increase significantly, and the global anti-viral and anti-bacterial coating categories, specifically, are projected to hit double-digit annualised growth over the next five years.* It’s estimated that by 2026, the anti-viral paint category will be worth US$1.3bn*. Asia is expected to experience the fastest regional growth in the anti-viral paint category, driven by a rapidly expanding building and infrastructure sector, which is one of Nouryon’s four end markets.

Global efforts to improve workplace safety and overall public health in the wake of the global pandemic is also driving category growth. “Given current technologies, formulating a sustainable, anti-viral paint with good stability and tinting properties can be quite challenging,” said Geert Hofman, vice president Construction Specialties. “Nouryon’s Arquad GS innovation is focused on solving complex customer challenges and addressing emerging market demands. This product will support our customers in developing antiviral and anti-microbial coatings with excellent sustainability profiles and premium product attributes.” Arquad GS is an innovative anti-virus technology designed to deactivate viruses, such as influenza, that

contaminate a paint’s film surface. The environmentally friendly additive may be used to partially or fully replace traditional in-can preservative and anti-microbial agents. The product is compliant with China Green Label GB/T 35602-2017 and enables customers to formulate high-quality, low-VOC paint. Arquad GS is also compatible with a broader range of emulsions, pigments, additives and tinters relative to conventional alternatives. The utilisation of these paints contributes to healthier homes and working environments, and supports Nouryon’s commitment to a sustainable future. c *Sources: Allied Market Research, Global Market Insights

Anti-bacterial paints – the new norm

Fifteen months into the most devastating period for our global society, our new normal is making us very aware of the surfaces surrounding us. Clean, hygienic surfaces are no longer something in your local health care facility, but have become critical – in homes, workplaces, factories and the like. Three prominent coatings manufacturers share with us anti-bacterial products produced by them.

I

recently read a quote from someone on Twitter, “If the pandemic has taught us one thing, it is how unhygienic we have been living as a society.” This hit hard – very hard. The truth in this statement cannot be debated. South Africa has skipped a flu season for the first time in 40 years. Worldwide flu season has been skipped in many countries. With a global decentralisation, working from home, less interaction, mask wearing, and a very healthy dose of hand sanitiser being used in excess of 10 times a day for many people – the reality is that due to the increased focus on hygiene, we have curbed many viruses in 2020 that were par for the course in our lives. This has led to the general population no longer simply considering anti-bacterial coatings as a luxury in a healthcare facility, but something that forms part of coatings in homes, businesses and other areas frequented by people. Let’s find out what Kansai Plascon and Versus Paints have to offer the industry.

designed for environments where infection control and anti-microbial performance are essential. Plascon Professional Hygiene™ Low Sheen uses silver technology called BIODEFENCE™ that actively inhibits microbial growth between cleanings and reduces the risk of cross-contamination through painted surfaces, thereby promoting more hygienic hospital and clinic environments. According to Plascon, the technology eliminates up to 99.9% of E.coli bacteria and provides protection against other harmful bacteria. The paint has low VOC, excellent washability and stain resistance, and it will maintain its antibacterial effectiveness for its full lifetime.

AGE-OLD JAPANESE WISDOM REFINED FOR TODAY’S APPLICATIONS Dating back 1 300 years, Shikkui is a traditional Japanese plaster that is used as a protective method when infections develop. Plascon’s parent company, Kansai Paint Japan, has successfully converted the Shikkui plaster finish into a paint finish, which will be imported for professional customers on request. The benefits of Kansai Shiquy Paint include an antiviral effect, the elimination of odours, humidity control and air purification. Viruses exist in moisture, such as droplets from coughing and sneezing, vomit and water vapour in the air (humidity). The strong alkaline content of Shiquy renders viruses in moisture inactive so that they are unable to attach themselves to human/animal cells. The product has a thin film finish, which can be applied onto various surfaces. PROFESSIONAL HYGIENE LOW SHEEN PAINT This paint is suitable for new or existing correctly primed interior plastered, concrete, porous brickwork, and various types of building boards. Product feature HARLEQUIN PAINTS Harlequin Paints has always been associated with a healthier option when it comes to its coatings.

Its ethos is strongly intrenched with quality, durability and the environment. During the Covid-19 pandemic and the continuous use of harsh cleaning products on surfaces for cleaning and sanitising, Harlequin Paints saw an opportunity to develop a clear coating that would remain safe and hygienic, and would greatly reduce the need to continually sanitise areas. The company partnered with a UKbased company, SteriTouch™ and over a period of six-months and after extensive independent laboratory testing done in the UK, Harlequin developed a clear coating that can be applied to walls and furniture reducing the need for excessive cleaning. This product with its heat and water resistance formulation, even scratches and abrasion do not affect the antimicrobial performance. Cleaning chemicals such as chlorine bleach, disinfectants, alcohol and even harsh industrial products such as MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) will not diminish the antimicrobial properties.

STERISEAL™ conforms to ISO 22196 and is being launched in March 2021 as STERISEAL™. It uses ionic silver, it holds extensive approvals, including those for food contact. All of the active substances are approved by EFSA and FDA and are supported for inclusion on the European Biocidal product regulation. No other organic antimicrobial additives, which have health and environmental concerns are used in this product. It is nonleaching and non-sensitising. This product can be used safely by anyone from the DIY home decorator to contractors alike. Although the technology is UK-based, it conforms to international standards (JIS and ISO) and is typically proven to be 99.99% effective against a whole range of common bacteria and microbial organisms that are common in domestic and public environments. Furthermore, Harlequin Paints will be launching other hygiene related paints for wall and ceilings in the coming months. c

British Coatings Federation welcomes FTA but calls for more changes to UK REACH The British Coatings Federation has welcomed the news of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the UK and EU.

D

espite the lateness of the decision, an FTA will mean, among other things, that BCF members will be able to benefit from tariff-free trade with the EU in future. This at least will ensure the coatings and printing inks sectors across Europe will not be hit by new tariff costs of an estimated £100m. However, while there is talk of a Chemicals Annexe being included in the deal, it is not yet clear this will include the key data-sharing clauses the UK wanted. January 2021 saw the introduction of the UK’s new independent chemicals regulations. UK REACH is a direct copy of the original, EU REACH, a piece of legislation widely regarded as being one of the most burdensome in the world. If data-sharing has not been agreed as

part of the FTA, UK REACH will now require the registration with full data dossiers of all chemical substances being used in the country to be put into a new database. This process is going to cost the chemicals industry an estimated £1bn. It is also likely to mean some substances will not be registered in the new UK database at all for reasons of cost, leaving many UK manufacturers in a position where they have to make do without, change their formulations, or take on the registration costs themselves. In addition, UK-based companies wanting to export to the EU will not only have to comply, but continue to adhere to EU REACH rules too. The reality is this is a hard Brexit with significant extra costs and burdens placed on UK industry as a result.

20 | Coatings SA

BCF members and businesses across the country will still have to deal with new customs and border controls, as well as delays to goods and raw materials caused by those additional procedures. This will make UK companies less competitive, having to spend more time and money dealing with bureaucracy that has not been there for decades. “In particular, we have serious concerns about the way UK REACH will duplicate the onerous EU REACH, despite the UK chemicals market being only 1/10th the size of the EU. It seems as though the FTA negotiations failed to secure a data-sharing agreement on chemicals. If that is indeed the case, we either need to see further negotiations in 2021 to try and reach that agreement as an add-on. c

VOCs meet their match!

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have been a very important topic for coating manufacturers for a number of decades and local chemical company, Savannah offers state-of-the-art solutions to eliminate VOCs released into the air.

C

oatings are the result of chemical processes and during the application of a coating, chemicals are released into the air when we apply them. Manufacturers were challenged as far back as 1982 to eliminate as many of these compounds being released into the air when applying a coating as possible. The VOCs in paint have become a key factor influencing the purchasing decision when a coating is specified for a designated application. When applying a coating, there are four main pollutants, often described as free aldehydes, examples of aldehydes include formaldehyde, hexaldehyde, toluene and acetaldehyde. For the purpose of this article we are focusing on formaldehyde. There are two methods to improve the indoor air quality when applying a coating. Firstly by lowering the paint emissions and secondly through pollution remediation, which is the scavenging of formaldehyde released after painting. Savannah offers a product for each of these methods. AEPD VOX 1000 FOR LOWERING PAINT EMISSIONS AEPD® VOX 1000 neutralising amino alcohol is a multifunctional additive for low-odour, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) interior water-based paints. With a very mild odour, high boiling point and low vapour pressure, it is an ideal formulating tool for paint producers that need to comply with EU Directive 2004/42/EC. Its neutralising amino alcohol is a distinct ANGUS amino alcohol that is chemically and functionally similar to AMP® (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol), but has an additional hydroxyl group

that allows for improved freeze and thaw resistance and lower volatility. The multifunctional nature of AEPD VOX 1000 neutralising amino alcohol allows for significant reduction in primary dispersant, defoamer, glycols and coalescing agents. This not only enables cost optimisation but also helps enhance the dry film properties such as scrub and water spotting. These additives can also contribute to odour and VOC and, therefore, this neutralising amino alcohol allows for further VOC level reduction. Adding AEPD VOX 1000 neutralising amino alcohol to the grind will adjust and control pH and can help reduce viscosity while improving pigment dispersion, resulting in lower primary dispersant levels. It will virtually eliminate amine or ammonia type odours. Product Benefits • • • •

Enables formulation optimisation Very low odour Improves pigment dispersion Ideal for complying with EU Directive 2004/42/EC for VOC • Excellent safety profile • Enhances open time and wet edge

TRIS AMINO ULTRA CRYSTALS FOR POLLUTION REMEDIATION TRIS is a hygroscopic material. It absorbs moisture, and the degree to which clumping, or ‘caking’, occurs is partially dependent on environmental and storage conditions that it is exposed to. Clumping is generally found as aggregates are mixed with powder, but can also result in formation of solid blocks. Depending on shipping times and conditions, conventional

22 | Coatings SA

TRIS buffers commercially available often arrive with clumping. This can also occur subsequently during storage or when drums or bags are opened and resealed during routine dispensing operations. To address handling challenges with TRIS buffers currently available on the market, ANGUS Chemical Company developed the next generation TRIS AMINO™ AC Advanced Crystals. TRIS AMINO AC buffers are manufactured exclusively by ANGUS using proprietary process technology, which are less prone to clumping and hardness – without any change to the molecule itself. ANGUS created a material solution to the clumping problem with a unique crystal morphology for TRIS AMINO AC buffers that has a larger, more rounded particle structure and does not typically form strong cakes even when subjected to a variety of packaging, shipping and storage conditions. TRIS AMINO AC buffers may provide critical operational benefits when it comes to handling and preparation: • Low interparticle cohesion between crystals requires less energy to break up clumps • More spherical crystals allow for improvements in dispensing and transport through conveyors • Lower dust emissions due to fewer fine particles • No additives or anti-clumping agents

Five years of extraordinary growth! Synthetic Polymers Limited (SPL), one of the strongest and most loyal SAPMA members, has recently completed five years of operations – a period of rapid growth. Despite the disruption of the pandemic, SPL is confident that the future holds even more success for the relatively young company, says founder and managing director, Sanjeev Bhatt, who has been vice-chairman of SAPMA for many years.

S

pecialising in the production of synthetic resins and polymers for the coatings sector, SPL entered the industry in late 2015, but has already become an integral part of the southern African coatings market. “We have established strong associations with leading paint manufacturers and also focus on export markets throughout Africa. SPL has a team of highly-skilled polymer chemists – including Mukesh Hadia, our technical director, whose role is pivotal in the laboratory and plant to ensure quality control and superior standards of resin. Our strong maintenance team of qualified engineers, fitters, welders and electricians augment the service we provide,” Sanjeev adds. SPL is based on a 3.6 hectares property in Krugersdorp, built and designed specifically for mass production of resins and polymers. This state-of-the-art plant can produce a variety of resins in German-designed reactors of various sizes and has massive storage capacities for bulk raw materials and finished goods. The fully equipped laboratory, with a modern research and development centre, has a pilot plant to polymerise various resins, as well as a full range of instruments and equipment to ensure

top quality control. “SPL also assists customers with all forms of testing or bench-marking they may require to be more competitive or even just to maintain their businesses during these difficult times,” states Bhatt. SPL has its own substation on-site and a 440kVA generator set to prevent any disruption in manufacturing. There are also cooling towers or chillers, thermic fluid heaters, a fire water pump service and fire water dam to

ensure safe operations. The company’s enormous tank farm stores both liquid raw materials and finished goods and, to ensure efficient logistics, the company has a bulk ISO-standard stainless-steel tank and trailer for resin deliveries. Among the production lines at SPL are a full range of alkyds, thermoplastic and thermoset acrylics, aminos and specialised resins used to manufacture most solvent-borne coatings applications in Africa. “We look forward to showcasing our range at the next Coatings for Africa exhibition to broaden our export horizons even further,” concludes Bhatt. c For more information about SPL, email sgb@syntheticpolymers.co.za or phone 011-596-4444 or visit www.syntheticpolymers.co.za.

Contan remains focused Polyoak’s specialist buckets and pails division, Contan, remains focused on partnering with its customers to optimise the recyclability of their buckets. Design, functionality, material choice, colour and decoration all need to be taken into careful consideration, to deliver buckets that are 100% recyclable.

W

hilst it is essential that brand owners and their packaging partners get this first basic step right, there is no guarantee that ‘100% recyclable’ buckets won’t end up as litter. Therefore, it is essential that brands to partner with bucket suppliers who meet the Government’s new Section 18 regulations, which have made extended producer responsibility (EPR) a mandatory requirement. Contan already firmly delivers on its extended producer responsibility through voluntary raw material levies paid to Polyco (the producer responsibility organisation for polyolefins), which are invested in projects to improve collection and recycling. It is also critical for plastic

convertors to practice responsible storage and handling of nurdles to prevent plastic leaking into stormwater drains and then the ocean. Polyoak is the first plastic packaging manufacturer in South Africa to pledge to the global Operation Clean Sweep initiative, demonstrating its commitment to Zero Plastic Pellet Loss into the environment. Karl Lambrecht, CEO of Contan explains, “We are confident that our diverse range of lightweight,

robust plastic paint containers brings manufacturers savings and reduces their carbon footprint. Contan is a sustainable supplier partner that assumes responsibility for the end life of our packaging,” Explains Karl Lambrecht, CEO of Contan, adding, “By partnering with Contan, paint manufacturers and brand owners can actively contribute towards reducing packaging waste to landfill and help drive recycling initiatives, which last year sustained almost 60 000 jobs. We look forward to exploring how Contan can add value to customers’ business in an innovative and sustainable manner.” c For more information, call 011-724-3800.

Profile

Preventative maintenance makes sense Property owners should employ preventative maintenance programmes for their structural assets instead of resorting to tight-fisted, short-term thinking when refurbishment can no longer be delayed, says Frederik Nel, MD of independent maintenance consultants, Curasure.

E

ven in economic downturns, the protective role of lifetime preventative maintenance measures holds financial rewards, contends Nel, whose multiaward winning company is a member of the SA Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA). “In the maintenance industry, the coatings industry not only provides a decorative and aesthetical value to properties, but also protects the building envelope against the elements which can cause weathering of painting, waterproofing and plastering. Concrete cancer, the rusting of steel reinforcements, as well as damage to expansion joints, and other building components that could affect the life expectancy of a building,” he explained. Major obstacles endangering asset durability include insufficient core

competency levels and lack of planning by property owners. “In South Africa, there is an alarming shortage of skills in the construction industry. The economic crunch makes it tempting to engage inexperienced operators who charge fees low enough to already question their expertise. This is where collaboration with industry bodies such as SAPMA is vital to ensure that coatings and other protective projects are entrusted to professionals using quality products,” said Nel. He says building owners should employ specialist consultants to assist with long-term maintenance planning. Curasure, for example, offers specialist consulting services to the property industry, particularly building owners, building managers and administrators. “Curasure will ensure that maintenance

plans and strategies are based on root cause analysis reports. In addition, a third-party quality assurance function will ensure that products specified are applied correctly. Independent consulting companies ensure that correct methods and standards are applied for planning and ensuring that maintenance projects are completed to specified standards.” Curasure, as unbiased and independent, experienced consultants, will: • Identify maintenance requirements through detailed audits • Do technical assessments and diagnose specific structural failures • Specify solutions and maintenance requirements • Carry out quality assurance inspections during projects • Implement and execute ongoing preventative systems

“The cost of the upkeep of a building does not have to be a huge burden to the asset owner. Using professional and knowledgeable consultants, will ensure correct implementation of maintenance strategies and actually provide substantial long-term savings,” concludes Nel. c For more information, email frederik@ curasure.co.za, phone 011 675 2595 or visit www.curasure.co.za
