Africa-inspired hues for Plascon’s Colour Combination for 2022 With the 2022 in full swing, Plascon welcomes freshness and rejuvenation as we edge closer to a post-pandemic world. For the company, 2022 symbolises more than just a new beginning, but a newfound appreciation for our wellbeing and an opportunity to create positive transformation. What better way to feel restored and reset than by looking to the healing properties of nature?
J
ust as in nature, colours come to life in harmony. Therefore, for 2022, Plascon has brought together three beautiful hues in a combination to capture the mood of the year. These colours pay homage to the natural African landscape, while bringing the simple pleasures of nature inside. The Colour Combination for 2022 works in a 60:30:10 ratio. This aligns with best design practices that the industry utilises, which suggests that 60% of a space should consist of a dominant colour, 30% a secondary colour, and 10% an accent colour. The Colour combination for 2022 makes it easier for architects, interior design, decor professionals and members of the public alike to adopt this approach and tastefully achieve a well-considered look. Suitable for both interior and exterior schemes,
the three shades each explore various elements of nature. Plascon’s hero colour, representing 60% of the ratio, is Plascon Pear Fantasy (Y5-B2-1). This soft yellow green makes for a modern, neutral shade while being comfortingly familiar. Capturing the soothing charm of a sandy shore at sunrise, this shade instantly puts our minds at ease and enlivens our spaces. Constituting 30% of the Colour Combination ratio is Desert Water (B5-B2-2). A calming and uplifting pale blue hue with an illuminating touch of purple. Inspired by the sunlit surface of tranquil water, this shade is subtle yet impactful, perfectly complementing the neutral Pear Fantasy. Lighter blue shades are associated with health, healing, tranquillity, and softness. Rounding off the ratio is Plascon
Zanzibar (70), which, makes up the final 10% of Plascon’s Colour Combination for 2022. A soft yet grounded colour, there’s a quiet warmth to this gentle smoky brown that brings an anchoring balance to lighter, cleaner hues. Capturing the fresh soil and majestic tree trunks of an early morning trail, this colour brilliantly accentuates Pear Fantasy and Desert Water. Notably, the combination has been chosen to reflect a specifically African context, from the actual colours themselves to their very names. “Often, trends that filter down to us from Europe or the USA are designed for that context, and not an African reality. Here, we are bringing together colours that reflect the way we live here, and that are created with Africa in mind,” says Suvasin Moodley, Plascon’s head of marketing. c

Clariant goes gold for 2022 Looking forward to a year of love, joy, mindfulness and making memories. Clariant pays an advance tribute to the year to come in its new Decorative Coatings Trends for 2022 – ‘golden’.
T
ake inspiration for decorating rooms, spaces and furniture from the palette’s 40 new shades that reflect four different phases of natural human behaviours in the new world in which we live. “Another ‘slowed-down’ year has ended and a new is beginning, we are craving, we’re really craving what comes next, for the chance to move forward and re-experience life following the intense focus on our behaviours, lifestyles and desires,” comments Franziska Hammerl, segment head Decorative and Wood Coatings, Global Technical Marketing Coatings at Clariant. In phase 1, ‘memotions’, a rather calm colour selection with some poppy colour accents represents a coming back to life of sorts, where we’re re-orienting ourselves, considering our recent pasts to plan our futures. This palette includes Colour of the Year ‘memory gold’, an antique gold tone with just the right touch of luxury, inspiring us to create new memories distinct from the past. The shade was formulated with Clariant pigment preparations and was mixed with Shinedecor C393, a brand new ready-to-use gold pearlescent effect pigment concentrate for waterborne
paints from Clariant’s styling partner, Eckart, to achieve the final antique and sparkling golden tone. “Memory gold is set to be an everpresent through 2022, perfect for accenting, or for colour drenching and blocking techniques to partner other colours of the year announced by decorative coatings brands. The combination of a neutral gold shade and effect pigment brings something meaningful and special to homes and lives,” adds Franziska. From ‘memotions’ we enter ‘wembrace’, where the colour scheme becomes more colourful while staying with calmer, naturally driven colours like greens, beiges and blues that reflect the happiness and feelings of being allowed to ‘breathe’ again. In ‘wescalate’, the palette evolves to become yet more colourful again, as we take these new opportunities into overdrive and go beyond our previous comfort zones. Blue tones continue to be dominant, but are accompanied by intense shades such as pink, orange and turquoise – ideal as accent colours to create a focal point without overwhelming the room. Finally, within the ‘metox’ palette you find very calm colours which are more on the cold side. Greys, blues,

green and beige are the key colours that can be used for full colour schemes in our homes. Because, after all this building excitement has waned, it’s time to settle back down to who we really are. All shades in golden are formulated with our Colanyl® 500 waterborne pigment preparations, which enable consumers to match any colour they choose in modern architectural paints and plasters. The resin-free and low VOC range combines the advantages of broad compatibility in waterborne architectural coatings and suitability for Point-of-Sale and In-Plant tinting. Colanyl 500 is manufactured without using alkyl phenol ethoxylated additives (APEO) and meets the requirements of the official VOC test norm DIN EN ISO 11890-2 (Directive 2004/42/EC). GOLDEN Decorative Color Trends 2022 features four colour sets and monthby-month highlight shades designed to stimulate creativity, feelings, friendships, and a focus on ourselves. be applied in a simplified manner,” said Nancy Lockhart, global product manager of Color at Axalta. “The design process began by tinting waterborne paints with various layering systems to provide depth and colour. EZ Tint – adding additional value Paint is one of the largest categories in the hardware retail sector and it is important that manufacturers and retailers capitalise on this category, ensuring increased margins and customer satisfaction and retention.
P
aint tinting has grown significantly over the past 20 years with global experts suggesting a trend increase in excess of 50% for both the retail and manufacturing sectors. Consumers prefer the option of tinting to choosing standard colours, but fear inconsistency and colour discrepancies added to the perceived higher costs that come with tinting. With the right technology and support partner these fears can be overcome. Sub-Saharan Africa has installed about 4 000 tinting dispensers. The staff at EZ Tint have actively commissioned and supported of at least 1 400 of these units over the past 10 years. The company has extensive knowledge on all brands, makes and models of tinting equipment and their relevant software, including those that are independent of tinting machine manufacturing. For years retailers and manufacturers have bought what is available with no customisable option to suit their specific requirements. EZ Tint will now be offering customised solutions for all volume requirements from small to large ensuring highest productivity at the lowest cost. January 2022 saw EZ Tint launch its first PCP technology dispenser in SA – UMOYA. Featuring 16 canister independent driven circuitry, the dispenser will have up to a 3-year guarantee under an annual maintenance contract, which once paid guarantees no further costs to the purchaser, reducing total cost of ownership for both retailers and manufacturers. c

Axalta scoops prestigious award Axalta was recently named the 2021 Global Commercial Vehicle Coatings Company of the Year by Frost & Sullivan.
T
he annual Best Practices award recognises Axalta for developing innovative coatings that address OEMs' evolving needs in designing lighter-weight vehicles and exterior components and for its leadership in innovation and the commercialisation of highly efficient coating solutions. "Every day, we strive to build deeper relationships with our customers by listening to their needs, understanding their business and delivering worldclass products and services that help them meet cost, quality, sustainability and cycle time targets," said Joseph Wood, vice president, Global Commercial Vehicle Coatings at Axalta. "We're honoured to be recognised for our innovation, product excellence and customer focus." As part of its analysis, Frost & Sullivan highlighted Axalta's Imron® and Rival® coating solutions, which save time and energy while improving productivity by reducing the number of steps in the application process. The new basecoat products are unique because they can be applied directly on plastic substrates without an adhesion promoter, reducing the coating application process from the
conventional three steps to two steps. The Imron Elite ColorPlus basecoat is a premium basecoat system explicitly designed for recreational vehicles' new and complicated paint schemes. ColorPlus uses 30% less material and reduces cycle time by 30% while still delivering a superior finish. Imron 2K high durability clearcoat, released in September 2020 for customers in Europe, stands out from its competitors in the region. The clearcoat is designed to adhere to the stringent volatile organic compound (VOC) limits mandated in European countries while retaining its durability and gloss after multiple washing cycles. metal (DTM) coatings for customers that reduce overall painting costs and perform well in non-corrosive to mildly corrosive environments. In addition, customers greatly value the product's single-step application ability using conventional activators, eliminating the need to create an additional inventory of new activators. Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents a Company of the Year award to the organisation that demonstrates excellence in terms of growth strategy and implementation in its field. The award recognises a high degree of innovation with products and technologies and the resulting leadership in customer value and market penetration. Frost & Sullivan Best Practices awards recognise companies in various regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analyses and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry. c

International distributor in the chemicals industry joins SAPMA Safic-Alcan Southern Africa, the new South African operations of an international distributor in the chemicals industry, has joined SAPMA.
F
ounded in 1847, SaficAlcan is a global specialty chemicals distributor that offers direct access to a large and diverse portfolio of innovative products. The French independent distributor is headquartered in Paris La Défense, France, from where it has developed a wide range of polymers, materials and additives for a variety of industries, including coatings and adhesives. In 2020, Safic-Alcan formed a subsidiary, Safic-Alcan Southern Africa, to serve the South African market and neighbouring countries, from its base at 21 The Broads, Mulbarton, in Johannesburg. ith a rich history of success through its association with the South African Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA) and the Oil and Colour Chemists’ Association (OCCA), Coatings for Africa is the largest event in Africa for raw material and service suppliers, coatings equipment and paint manufacturers. For three days, the trade exhibition facilitates numerous exciting business and networking opportunities for the coatings community, while the two-day conference that runs alongside the exhibition offers the opportunity to expand your knowledge and engage with leading industry experts from companies such as BASF, Wacker and CHT Group, amongst others. At the last event in 2018, more than 250 companies from 18 countries exhibited at the show and more than 2 500 people attended. Now returning in 2022, Coatings for Africa is set to provide a much-needed faceto-face environment for the coatings industry to thrive. GETTING INVOLVED South Africa’s paint and coatings industry is enjoying a steady increase in demand, with the market size forecast to reach a value of US$2.1bn by 2026 after growing at a CAGR
of 5.6% during the period from 2021-2026. There are more than 300 coatings manufacturers based in South Africa alone and several prominent construction projects in the region that are fuelling the demand for coatings, such as the Lanseria Smart City and the Port Elizabeth Waterfront Project. All of this makes South Africa one of the largest and most influential coatings markets on the continent, as well as one of the most exciting to be involved with. The paint industry in South Africa continues to increase its focus on environmental issues, such as the reduction of lead in paint and improved manufacturing processes to reduce VOCs. At this innovative time in one of Africa’s leading coatings markets, Coatings for Africa is the perfect platform at which to integrate your company and products into this thriving market. Coatings for Africa is also co-hosted by the South African Paint Manufacturers Association (SAPMA) and the Oil & Colour Chemists’ Association (OCCA), ensuring that you will be able to meet key decision-makers from across this industry at the event. Exhibitors at the show will be able to generate quality leads, reestablish old connections and create new business opportunities from the comfort of their booth, taking
