A fresh start During my time as editor of the DIY industry's largest publication – DIY & Industrial Trade News, which I loved working on – I enjoyed giving readers my personal perspective. Now, working on Coatings SA means I can only do the same four times a year. I always try and be positive, to ignite the flame of passion we all have for our country, our businesses and our industry. The last 18 months have been incredibly tough for everyone. I believe that there is hope, and I believe businesses that have clung to life through this time will flourish – it is their passion and tenacity for survival that puts them in good stead. Now is the time for all of us, not as individuals, but rather as a community, to step out of the shadow cast by this epidemic and achieve success. I hope you watched the British and Irish Lions series. This was the best B&I Lions Tour in 50 years. After not been able to play any international rugby for almost two years the Boks had to cancel training activities and retreat into isolation.

ed’s note

Johann Gerber But still the mighty Springboks rose to the challenge and defeated the B&I Lions for a historic victory lead by a formidable captain in Siya Kolisi. Be like the Springboks, and let's take on the ‘lion’ before us and slay it – because with the right perspective, they might only be a couple house cats! I wish you all a safe push towards the end of 2021

New association to protect retailers from state invasion

By Tara Benn

SAPMA has established a sister organisation, the Retail Hardware and Paint Association, to intensively lobby and represent the interests of our beleaguered hardware and paint retailer members.

T

he association's retail members now, more than ever, need a dedicated effort to effectively safeguard and stand up against increasing ‘government regulation’ of private wholesale and retail companies. SAPMA last year played a significant role in the effort to lobby government to relax lockdown restrictions which, at the onset of the pandemic, severely threatened the continuity and survival of hardware and paint outlets. The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), and more recently the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), are planning to regulate the hardware and paint retail sector in the near future. Two structures are currently under discussion: a Retail Charter Council, for BBBEE Purposes, and a generalised Retail Bargaining Council, designed to regulate wages and conditions of employment. Furthermore, the Construction Sector Charter Council is already claiming that retail paint and hardware companies fall under its scope. This means that such companies are subject to the council’s scorecard for BBBEE purposes. The most immediate threat that SAPMA intends to deal with, on behalf of the new Retail Hardware and Paint Association, is to counter the existing plans by the Black Business Council for the built environment, together with Master Builders South Africa (the secretariat of the newly-established Construction Alliance SA), to

collaborate with the DEL and DTIC to implement preposterous new employment equity targets for hardware and paint retailers. The stated aim of the Director General of Employment and Labour, is for the DEL to introduce a certificate of compliance designed to allow only Level 1 and 2 measured entities, to tender and contract for supply chain providers into the Public Sector or to be listed on the preferential supply-chain database of the DTIC. In addition to offering a counter to this proposed invasion of SAPMA members, SAPMA will also on behalf of the Retail Hardware and Paint Association, assist in: • Training, professional recognition and general development of staff in this sector • Creating specific dispute resolution structures to help retailers avoid having to work through the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in matters relating to employment, performance, discipline and dismissals • The facilitation of Section 189 staff retrenchment processes where necessary on members’ request • The dissemination of information relating to DTIC supply-side incentives for the hardware and paint retail sector.

SAPMA will attempt to counter ‘preposterous’ new proposed government regulations for hardware and paint retailers, says Tara Benn, SAPMA executive director.

The new Retail Hardware and Paint Association, acting as both a trade and an employer association, will operate under the SAPMA umbrella as is currently the case of the Surface Coatings Association, which has been managed by SAPMA since 1985. A separate governance structure will be created for the new association which, once in place, will replace the existing SAPMA Retail Committee. c

Argyrou leaves, big shoes to fill

Aggie’ Argyrou has retired as SAPMA chairperson after leading the association for the past three years, which produced unprecedented challenges for the industry and the entire South African business sector.

S

APMA entered Argyrou’s life when, at an AGM 11 years ago, he was elected to the SAPMA executive committee. At the same AGM, the Warrior Paints financial director was elected vice-chairman and he remained in that office until 2018 when he replaced Terry Ashmore as chairman. Aggie reflected on his association with SAPMA after announcing his retirement at the 2021 AGM: “Deryck Spence was appointed by SAPMA as executive director shortly after Terry and I were elected to our offices. Deryck, who retired at the beginning of last year, played an important part at SAPMA, introducing significant changes to the way meetings were conducted and bringing many fresh ideas to take the organisation forward. So, SAPMA substantially increased its membership of paint manufacturers and suppliers through the sterling work of Derryck and his assistant at the time, Mandy Linossi. “Now, after serving three years as chairperson, I feel it is time to retire and step down so that a younger person, with new ideas, could take over and help grow SAPMA. “Over the years, I have learnt much about the coatings industry and met many interesting and authoritative people and executives not only from South Africa, but also outside our borders. Deryck Spence, Sanjeev Bhatt, Mandy Linossi, and Tara Benn on our MANCO, were strong supporters and the chairman of the British Coatings Federation, Tom Bowtell, was helpful in sharing UK and European developments and trends with SAPMA. He also made the BCF coatings training courses available to SAPMA. “I believe that the concept of forming a professional body for the industry

is a positive way forward and the younger and energetic MANCO, Tara, Sanjeev and Stephen Reynecke will keep our members updated with new developments. SAPMA’s experienced consultant, Ivor Blumenthal, will also be involved in keeping the industry updated with labour and organisational issues. “I am sad to leave after so many years and will miss meeting with the members,

Aggie Argyrou

but know that I have left the association in capable hands,” Aggie added. The two co-vice chairpersons of SAPMA, Sanjeev Bhatt and Stephen Reinecke, paid tribute to Aggie’s input to the association. “Aggie is a man of few words, but they are always wise ones. Solid as a rock ethics and integrity. A true leader who led by example. Definitely a rare species in today’s world. We salute you!” stated Sanjeev Bhatt. Stephen added: “It is rare that one finds man who commits his time unconditionally, offering many years to our organisation and leading SAPMA for the last few. Aggie is a man of absolute integrity, and we appreciate the relentless efforts and time he committed to SAPMA.” “Aggie, thank you so much for all your time and commitment you have given to SAPMA over the years. Your dedication to the Association has not gone unnoticed and is appreciated by not only myself, but all the members of SAPMA,” said Tara Benn, SAPMA’s executive director. c

AkzoNobel launches two sustainability initiatives AkzoNobel, has announced two significant developments in the group’s quest to increase global sustainability.

T

he company’s global head office is funding research into new sustainable food packaging, which has the potential of benefiting the entire coatings industry as well as massively improve global recycling. The company also launched two major projects to install around 8 000 solar panels at its production plants in China, helping the company to accelerate its ambition of cutting carbon emissions in half by 2030. Food packaging that no longer contains aluminium has been brought a step closer, thanks to a major breakthrough in ongoing research, involving AkzoNobel. The crucial discovery was made by PhD student, Jiaying Li, who is working with the Dutch Advanced Research Center Chemical Building Blocks Consortium (ARC CBBC), in collaboration with the University of Twente, Wageningen University, BASF, and AkzoNobel. His research is focused on a new, recyclable coating to replace the type of metallised packaging that blocks out oxygen typically used for products such as crisps and coffee.

Currently, this sort of packaging consists of several layers, each with its own function. As well as requiring a lot of energy to produce, it is also difficult to recycle. A process has now been devised which involves the smart combination of two water-soluble polymers (polyelectrolytes), resulting in all the functionality being delivered by one recyclable layer. “The use of polyelectrolytes in the coatings industry is not new,” explains André van Linden, AkzoNobel’s director of Coatings Technology. “But these coatings are normally built up step by step, so industrialisation of this method would be too complex, time-consuming, expensive and impractical. However, the new one-step approach being developed through the ARC CBBC means the use of polyelectrolytes is much closer to becoming industrialised.” “Our initial results show that the coating has great potential for future use in packaging to protect food from oxidation. We’re also focusing on improving other properties, such as water resistance and strength,” adds Li. In another sustainable move,

AkzoNobel is funding research into new sustainable food packaging which will benefit many sectors of industry and improve global recycling.

thousands of solar panels are being installed at two AkzoNobel decorative paints plants: more than 5 000 in Shanghai and almost 3 000 in Guangzhou. “Increasing the amount of renewable energy that we use is a key part of our ‘People/Planet/ Paint.’ approach to doing business more sustainably,” explains Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel’s programme manager for Sustainability. “The new installations will make an important contribution to our ongoing sustainability achievements in China and will help drive us towards our overall goal of moving to 100% renewable electricity by 2030.” The new solar systems will become the primary source of power at each location and will generate around 1.66 million kWh in Shanghai and 1 million kWh in Guangzhou. c

The new onestep approach being developed through the ARC CBBC means the use of polyelectrolytes is much closer to becoming industrialised.

ENVIROGEL 96

When flexible and innovative paint manufacture requires a highly efficient Hydrophobically modified associative thickener designed to impart a pseudo-plastic rheology that is environment friendly. APPLICATIONS: Envirogel 96 is an alkali swellable associative thickener. It is suitable for use in the dispersion (grind) or let down phase. Envirogel 96 thickened paints provide high viscosities at high shear rates resulting in better film build when applied by brush or roller. It also maintains low shear rates resolution in superior levelling. High PVC paints thickened with Envirogel 96 show improved scrubbability. GENERAL Envirogel 96 is compatible with most other thickeners and can be used in combination with certain cellulosic type thickeners. Being an associative thickener, Envirogel 96’s efficiency will depend on the other components present, i.e. surfactants, dispersants, co-solvents, etc. Alkaline pH is essential to achieving performance from Envirogel 96 which is activated at a pH greater than 7.5 and is capable of maintaining a stable compound viscosity up to pH 10.5. A drop in the viscosity at elevated pH is a result of a change in the ionic strength of the thickener. The introduction of salts can have a similar effect. PROCESSING: Envirogel 96 offers the paint formulator easy handling and flexibility in both the order of addition and the method of incorporation. It can be added to the mill base, let-down or as a post addition without affecting performance properties. As long as the system is sufficiently alkali (pH range of optimum efficiency: 8.5 - 9.5). Pre-dilution of the thickener before incorporation into paint is recommended to ensure adequate mixing.

Kgomotoso - Paint and Life The welcoming smile at reception or at functions, and happy voice on the SAPMA phone, have for the past eight years belonged to Kgomotso Mokubyane, a charming young lady who has become a committed part of the SAPMA team.

N

ow SAPMA’s Admin Assistant, Kgomotso completed her schooling at Mabuya Secondary School in Daveyton before doing tertiary studies at Rosebank College. She has two brothers and a sister. As the older daughter in the family, Kgomotso had to learn to stand on her own two feet right from childhood, and that experience has allowed her to raise a cute baby boy, Pogiso Prince, who is now four years old. Her first job prior to joining SAPMA was a brief stint as part-time invigilator at the British Council. “After receiving my CV, SAPMA asked me to come for

an interview. I had no idea what SAPMA was and I rushed to an internet café to find out more. The idea of working for, and learning more about the paint and coatings sector sounded great. I was delighted to be offered the job of receptionist in 2013 by Deryck Spence, who was then SAPMA’s executive director,” Kgomotso recalls. And she has loved every day of her job since. “Paint has helped me hone my observational skills and taught me to see the world the way artists and paint producers do. My job has also boosted my mind development and taught me to improve creativity and problemsolving. I have become more aware of

Hardware sector needs unity During the second quarter of 2021, the South African independent paint and hardware sector realised growth of about 30% versus 2020 and around 12% against 2019, Gary van der Merwe, chairperson of SAPMA’s new Retail Hardware and Paint Association, told the recent SAPMA online annual general meeting.

A

mong the three retail categories, durable goods retailers such as hardware, furniture, electronics and household appliances, recorded the highest level of confidence according to the Bureau for Economic Research. “Unsurprisingly, seven out of 10 local respondents to the BER June survey said they are more focused on saving than previously,” van der Merwe told the meeting. “The PwC June 2021 Consumer Insights Pulse Survey found that brand loyalty was one of the key influencers in South Africa driven by reliability (48% of respondents) ranking this in their top three attributes, loyalty programmes (36%), widespread availability of the brand’s products (35%), and exceptional customer service (30%).” Van der Merwe said SAPMA has continued to develop a practical and effective means of training people working within the industry, by focusing on using certain modules of the current SAPMA paint courses to develop a SQCA-approved qualification for coatings specialist, aimed at the paint representative and lab assistant. The objective would then be accreditation by the W&R Seta through a MOU with the CHIETA. These essential moves to provide quality personnel to the industry are also to assist retailers meet their requirements in respect of BBEEE and skills development. He said among the main objectives of the SAPMA Retail Hardware and

Paint Committee are: • To be as interactive as all the other committees within SAPMA • To give the retail paint sector (RPS) a collective and independent voice • Under SAPMA, the committee must agree where retail should be represented. This is currently under the Construction Charter, but preferably should be under the Wholesale and Retail chamber • Need for self-governance, and for this input and participation from the retail sector are needed to ensure that the paint retailers are recognised • Send a clear strong message that key decisions governing the retail paint sector cannot proceed unless there has been engagement with the SAPMA retail paint section. Van der Merwe told the meeting that a new Retail Paint and Hardware Association under the auspicious of the SAPMA Retail Alliance has been registered. The plan is to appoint representatives and ‘ringfence’ members to deliver the following objectives: • Articulate the workings of the new organisation to decide on structures and mandates to build a strong alliance • Prepare and formalise a clear plan to enable the association to sit at the table with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to drive the retail sector’s collective message • Working together to safeguard compliance of and meeting new

BBBEE targets instituted by Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), currently based on sectorial determination ie Construction Charter • To ensure the new Retail Association under SAPMA is recognised as a professional retail training body designate (based on the Canadian Paint and Coatings association) • For the retail section to be taken seriously by the DTI for inclusion in Stats SA, benefit from supplier and incentive grants, as well as training support. “What is critical is that we throw our weight behind these deliverables, so I encourage members to get involved and to speak out on these issues to ensure we are indeed finally taken seriously. Currently, we have over 10 groups on board, representing over 1 500 outlets, with over 20 000 staff. We are in the process of recruiting new members who will potentially increase our representation to over 3 000 outlets with over 35 000 staff which will strengthen our association and position as SAPMA’s Retail Hardware and Paint Association,” van der Merwe concluded.

Pseudoplastic associative thickener for paint and coating systems Rheolate is an associative thickener, also called Non-ionic Synthetic Associative Thickener (NiSAT). NiSAT‘s, are based on non-ionic co-polymers.

S

tructures of these molecules can be described as hydrophobic groups attached to hydrophilic backbones. Due to this structure, the thickening mechanism is driven by the capability to form micelles and to interact with hydrophobic parts of the individual formulations. The resulting flow characteristics provided by this product class depend on the type and number of hydrophobic groups. To achieve a thickener providing pseudoplastic flow, the molecules need to be predominately hydrophobic. Shear thinning associative thickeners are typically used for spray applied systems. Additionally they provide strong stability after the application resulting in excellent sag stability. Furthermore, associative thickeners only have minimal influence on the viscoelasticity, which is beneficial for flow and levelling. RHEOLATE® 299: A highly efficient NiSAT product, is primarily formulated to clear and pigmented industrial coating formulations. It provides the strongest pseudoplastic flow of all Elementis associative thickeners. It is free of biocides and therefore meets the latest market requirements. RHEOLATE® 288: Generates a high level of viscosity at low shear rates combined with strong shear-thinning flow. Biocide-free RHEOLATE® 288 is used in a wide range of clear and wood coating systems and is a popular choice for dip coats. RHEOLATE® 266: Another pseudoplastic option based on a polyether urea polyurethane technology. RHEOLATE® 666, utilising

equal active component, is our most pseudoplastic acting ultra low VOC product, applicable for decorative and industrial systems. RHEOLATE® FX 1080: The low-VOC version of the classical RHEOLATE® FX 1010, gives strong pseudoplasticity along with efficient viscosity buildup at medium shear rates. Both RHEOLATE® FX 1010 and RHEOLATE® FX 1080 are used in industrial and decorative applications and are formulated without the use of biocides. Additionally, these products are often utilised in other market sectors, for example, for adhesives or building materials. RHEOLATE® 310D: Is a shear thinning associative grade with a special molecular composition to provide stable viscosity in tinted systems. These are often critical for associative acting products due to the high content of wetting and dispersing agents in the tinter. Additionally, RHEOLATE® 310D

23 | Coatings SA

reacts less sensitively to polar cosolvents and coalescents. Therefore, RHEOLATE® 310D is a popular choice for decorative, as well as industrial, tint bases. It is also low in VOCs and biocide-free. RHEOLATE® 658: A NiSAT grade recently added to our portfolio, produces pseudoplastic flow combined with effective viscosity build up at low and medium shear rates. RHEOLATE® 658 is used in decorative and industrial low-VOC paints and coatings. It is often combined with high-shear thickeners such as RHEOLATE® HX 6010, in order to achieve the optimum balance between sag and levelling. All mentioned RHEOLATE® products can be combined with other thickeners in order to optimise the application properties of the individual final system. c For more information, email sean.stolle@aeciworld.com
