historic budget speech delay offers hope for relief

For the first time, the South African government’s Budget Speech, originally scheduled for February, has been postponed to 12 March. This delay follows the GNU partners’ rejection of a proposed 2% VAT increase. With the current VAT already a concern in an economically constrained landscape, this likely offers relief to both businesses and the general populace. We await the National Treasury and Finance Minister’s commentary on budget allocations across sectors. Our hope is that the additional review period will yield

favourable outcomes for the business sector.

In this issue, take a look at our comprehensive retailer's guide on tiling tools (page 29). We also celebrate TFC's 25-year-milestone (page 58).

retailers must act fast to capitalise on retail media's rapid growth

The rise of the retail industry as a platform for digital advertising marks a significant shift in how brands connect with consumers. As retail evolves beyond traditional brick-and-mortar stores, it has increasingly become a hub for digital engagement, offering a rich environment for personalised marketing and real-time consumer interaction, says Accenture Africa retail sales Lead Kevin Gray.

Retailers are leveraging their online channels, mobile apps, and even in-store digital displays to deliver targeted ads based on customer data, preferences, and shopping behaviours. Once an overlooked topic, retail media is the fastest-growing advertising channel, with revenues expected to grow by an average of +11% annually through 2028 to reach $216bn.. Retailers have unparalleled access to consumers’ attention, reaching audiences on a scale that few other industries can rival, positioning themselves as leaders at the forefront of digital engagement. This opens vast opportunities for ad sales, both in-store and online, as well as new datadriven services. For instance, Amazon is progressively emerging as a top contender, rivalling the largest global social media

platforms for brands’ advertising budgets.

But where Amazon leads, other retailers are following fast. They are also now keenly looking to capture this growing opportunity as the digital advertising landscape evolves, recognising the value of using their platforms not just for sales but also as powerful advertising channels. Across Europe, Asia, and beyond, retailers are investing in technologies and strategies to harness consumer data, enabling them to offer tailored advertising solutions to brands.

South African retailers are also exploring this approach, leveraging rich consumer data from their online and in-store platforms. This shift is especially evident in larger retailers who are investing in advanced technology and analytics to better understand their customers and

refine their advertising strategies. For example, local retailers in the FMCG sector have been using loyalty programmes such as Pick n Pay Smart Shopper, Checkers Xtra Savings, Woolworths Rewards, Pepkor Plus More, SPAR Rewards, and more to gather insights on customers’ purchasing habits. By combining this data with their online and in-store shopping behaviours, the retailer can offer hyper-targeted advertisements and personalised discounts through mobile apps, email campaigns, and even in-store digital displays.

By tapping into the wealth of consumer insights generated through online shopping behaviours, retailers can craft highly targeted advertising campaigns that speak directly to the interests and preferences of specific audiences. This data-driven approach allows brands to

DIGITAL ADVERTISING

deliver personalised, relevant ads that are more likely to capture consumer attention and drive engagement. With access to detailed insights into buying habits, browsing patterns, and even product affinities, retailers can fine-tune their marketing efforts, ensuring that every ad is tailored to the right person at the right time. This shift is reshaping the advertising landscape as retail media appears as key players in the digital ad space.

WHAT’S DRIVING SUCH DRAMATIC GROWTH?

Put simply, it’s all about the data. Retailers have been sitting on a goldmine of data about their customers’ needs, wants, desires and behaviours. And because much of it is based on actual transactions, the data is often richer and more granular than that available in other sectors – even including major advert-reliant technology players like social media platforms. This granularity is exactly what advertisers need to provide targeted, personalised, compelling, and relevant content. Not only that, but retail media content is also reaching customers much closer to the point of purchase. It means retailers can potentially give brands much better feedback, much faster, on the effectiveness of their campaigns. These capabilities are becoming even more important as the third-party cookie enters

its death throes and technology companies completely rethink their approach to user privacy. Delivering targeted advertising campaigns via digital channels is becoming increasingly difficult without access to first-party data, if not impossible.

A WIN-WIN-WIN

Done well, retail media offers something for everyone. Consumers can receive better, more relevant content, offers and promotions at a point in their purchasing journey when they’re more likely to be receptive to the right message — and less likely to be annoyed by intrusive advertising.

Retailers can generate new revenue streams, increase profitability, and get more insight into their existing customer base. With the economic outlook remaining uncertain around the world, this can provide a much-needed source of new revenue growth. And clearly, retail media is a win for brands too, who can provide far more targeted, cost-effective advertising, with more direct ways to measure purchasing uplift, whether online or offline.

WHAT DO RETAILERS NEED TO DO TO CAPITALISE?

A retail media management system. This powerful tool allows retailers to design and execute targeted marketing campaigns, track,

and measure performance in real-time, and optimise their strategies for maximum impact. In some cases, the system can automate the billing process, streamlining financial operations and ensuring seamless transactions.

Retailers need to adopt Gen AI as a key mechanism for customer engagement. By harnessing the power of generative AI, retailers can deliver highly personalised and dynamic interactions with customers, enhancing the overall shopping experience. Gen AI enables businesses to analyse customer data and predict preferences, allowing for tailored product recommendations, real-time customer support, and personalised marketing campaigns.

This not only improves customer satisfaction and loyalty but also helps retailers stay competitive in an increasingly digital marketplace.

However, technology alone is not enough to establish a successful retail media strategy at scale. Achieving this requires a holistic, end-toend business transformation.

Retailers – whether FMCG, Hardware or eCommerce – must develop new ways of working across departments and integrate advertising functions seamlessly into their existing operations. This includes hiring or training for new skill sets that may not currently exist in the retail sector,

boost sales with these essential paint tips & trends!

The paint industry in 2025 is witnessing significant transformation driven by technological advancements, sustainability initiatives, and evolving consumer preferences. What has been evident is paint demand for various purposes. Whether for painting buildings, or for exterior and interior design, paint remains a highly sought-after product in both industrial and commercial sectors.

Importance of paint and primers

When choosing the right paint for a project, understanding the types of paint available is crucial.

Here are two most common paint types that retailers need to know to help their customers make informed decisions when purchasing paint:

The two most common paint types available in the market are water-based and oil-based paints. Water-based paints are more environment-friendly, easy to clean, and quick to dry. These paints are ideal for most indoor applications and areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms and kitchens. Oil-based paints, on the other hand, are more durable and provide a smoother finish, making them suitable for surfaces like doors and trims. However, they take longer to dry and require mineral spirits for cleanup.

While choosing the kind of paint suitable for the task at hand, it is important for retailers to advise their customers on the critical role that primers play for setting the foundation for a smooth and even finish.

Primers are designed to adhere to surfaces and provide a base for the paint to stick to, enhancing the durability and appearance of the paint job. Various types of primers are available in the market, namely all-purpose, stain-blocking, and bonding primers. Selecting the right primer depends on the project requirements. Educating customers on the importance of priming can prevent issues such as peeling or uneven coverage.

Tips to choosing the right paint

Here are some key tips retailers can use to guide customers on how to select the most appropriate paint for their project:

• Retailers should recommend that

customers consider the surface they will be painting (eg, wood, metal, drywall, brick). Different surfaces may require specific types of paint for optimal adhesion and finish

• Use paint samples to show your customers how different colours look in specific lighting conditions

• Enquire on what type of finish the customer desires (e.g, matte, satin, semigloss, gloss) based on the desired look and durability. Glossy finishes are more durable and easier to clean, making them ideal for high-traffic areas

• Help the customer to determine whether the paint will be used indoors or outdoors. Exterior paints are formulated to withstand weather conditions, while interior paints are designed for easy cleaning and durability within the home

• Help your customer choose between water-based and oil-based paints.

Paint accessories

A paint project’s success does not only depend on the paint and primer. Paint accessories can make the project quicker, more efficient, and assist in producing desired outcomes.

Here are some important accessories that retailers should know to provide guidance for customers: PAINT BRUSHES

High-quality paint brushes are essential for achieving a professional-looking finish. There are different types of brushes designed for specific tasks.

Additionally, detailing brushes such as angled sash brushes help in achieving clean lines and are great for cutting in. Emphasising the importance of investing in good quality brushes can lead to better results for the customer.

PAINT SCRAPERS

Before painting, surfaces often need preparation, which includes removing old paint or wallpaper. Paint scrapers are handy tools for this job. Different types of scrapers are available, including flat scrapers and multi-edge scrapers, each designed for specific tasks.

Ensuring customers choose the right scraper for their needs is vital for a smooth preparation process, which impacts the quality of the final paint job.

Other accessories that are essential for paint projects include and are not limited to: PUTTY KNIFE

BUCKET AND SPONGE

Used with water or a mild detergent solution to clean walls and surfaces before painting.

• A flat scraper works well for large, flat areas

• For oil-based paints, natural bristle brushes are preferred as they hold more paint and deliver a smoother finish.

• A multi-edge scraper is excellent for corners and edges.

TSP (TRISODIUM PHOSPHATE)

pro gardening tips for summer/autumn maintenance

In general, all spaces of the garden need regular attention as we are in the peak of our summer and approaching autumn. Here are some effective ideas that retailers can share with their customers to keep plants healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and well-structured.

Regular watering

GARDENA’s range of pressure sprayers is designed for all garden sizes and can be easily used both indoors and outdoors.

Soil care

2

The soil should be checked regularly for soil health and pH. Recommend that customers add compost or organic matter to improve soil fertility and structure. Advise customers to fertilise the soil to feed the plants as the rain could have washed away valuable nutrients from the plant roots.

1

BEST PRACTICE: Advise customers to water deeply and less often to encourage deep root growth. Early morning is the best time to water. Further suggest that your customers use drip irrigation or soaker hoses to save water and ensure even distribution. GARDENA offers a range of watering controls and hoses to automate your irrigation, keeping your plants healthy and happy.

Weeding

Weeds should be promptly removed to prevent competition for nutrients, mulch should be used to suppress weed growth and to retain moisture. Tip your customers to remove weeds from the lawn using the correct removal tools that are kind to their back and their garden. The GARDENA Weed Removing tool allows the user to operate it in a standing position making it easy to remove weeds. The release button allows the user to disperse the weed immediately into the refuse collector.

FEATURE

Fertilising

When fertilising the garden, customers should use slow-release or organic fertilisers tailored to their plant's needs and they must avoid over-fertilising. Advise your customers that it is essential to regularly feed the garden so that there are lush lawns and thriving healthy plants.

GARDENA’s range of fertilisers are designed to cater for all garden sizes and easily spread granular fertiliser without spillage and over-fertilising.

Pest and disease control

4 5

Pests and diseases could be harmful to your customers' garden, advise them to:

• Regularly inspect plants for signs of pests or diseases

• Use organic remedies like neem oil or introduce beneficial insects to manage pests

6

Seasonal pruning

For seasonal pruning, here are some tips to share with your customers:

• Prune perennials, shrubs, and trees at the right time for their growth cycles

• Deadhead flowers to promote blooming

superflex evolution diamond blades

No toolbox is complete without the Superflex range of abrasives. With application-specific products in various tiers, Grinding Techniques caters for every industry, bringing specialised abrasive solutions to the market since 1981.

The Evolution range, also known as the ‘EVERYDAY abrasive’, offers the perfect balance between cost, performance, and longevity.

NOW boasting an additional flap disc, and slimline cutting disc, the range offers a complete solution to almost any project, with excellent value for money.

When it comes to cutting applications on stone, concrete, and other masonry substrates, Superflex Evolution Diamond Blades feature both excellent longevity and cutting abilities.

Available in two derivatives – The Segmented, and Continuous rim –these blades fit directly onto a normal angle grinder.

The Segmented rim, which is generally

used within the construction industry to cut brick, concrete and stone, will ultimately provide the fastest cut. This blade is generally used for dry cutting, as its segmented rim allows air to flow through, cooling the blade during use, while also helping the faster exit of debris.

The Continuous rim is favoured for tile cutting as it provides a slower, but much neater cut that reduces chipping to almost zero. Suitable for wet cutting applications on hard materials, such as glass, porcelain, ceramics, marble and granite.

Apart from NEW blister packaging, Superflex Evolution Diamond blades now feature improved durability and longevity due to the enhanced design achieving multiple cuts for longer.

Influencer Marketing: What works and what to avoid

Influencer marketing can be effective for hardware products, but its success depends on several factors. Here’s an overview of how it works and what contributes to its effectiveness.

• Target audience: The influencer should have a follower base that aligns with your target market. For hardware products, this might include DIY enthusiasts, contractors, home improvement hobbyists, and professionals in the construction industry

• Expertise and credibility: Influencers with experience and credibility in the hardware or home improvement space are more likely to persuade their audience. For example, influencers who regularly post about DIY projects or tools reviews can be very effective.

• Authenticity: Authentic reviews and demonstrations are more impactful. Audiences can often tell when content is sponsored, so genuine enthusiasm and honest opinions about the product are crucial

• Engagement: High-quality content that engages followers, such as tutorial videos, live demonstrations, or before-and-after project showcases, can drive interest and sales.

• Long-term partnerships: Building long-term relationships with influencers can be more effective than one-off campaigns. This approach helps establish consistent messaging and stronger trust with the audience

• Collaborations and sponsorships: Collaborating on content creation, sponsoring DIY projects, or cohosting events/webinars can enhance visibility and credibility.

• Track performance: Use tracking links, discount codes, and engagement metrics to measure the effectiveness of influencer campaigns. Monitor metrics such as reach, engagement rates, conversion rates, and sales

• Adjust strategies: Continuously analyse the data to understand what works and what doesn’t. Adjust your strategies accordingly to optimise future campaigns.

• Social media: Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are popular for hardware product demonstrations and DIY projects. YouTube is especially effective for detailed tutorials, while Instagram and TikTok are great for quick tips and project showcases

• Blogs and forums: Influencers who write detailed blog posts or participate in forums dedicated to home improvement can also be valuable. These platforms allow for in-depth reviews and discussions.

CHALLENGES

• Authenticity: Ensuring that the influencer’s endorsement comes across as genuine can be challenging

• Cost: Influencer marketing can be expensive, especially when working with highprofile influencers

• ROI Measurement: It can be difficult to directly attribute sales to influencer campaigns without robust tracking mechanisms.

In summary, influencer marketing can work well for hardware products if done correctly. It’s important to choose the right influencers, create high-quality and authentic content, and continuously measure and refine your strategies.

2. Content quality
3. Platform choice
4. Partnership strategy

For Saudi Arabia’s Al Rajhi, it was a dream come true to win the Dakar Rally on home soil, and the man from Riyadh now also leads the 2025 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) standings, as the Dakar Rally is Round 1 of this championship. With the Dakar Rally done and dusted, Al Rajhi is on 70 points in the W2RC, with his nearest rival, Henk Lategan, on 55 points. Toyota leads the W2RC manufacturer standings after the opening round, with a 34 points buffer to the team in second place.

Lategan and Cummings made no secret of their title aspirations when they won the Prologue for the Dakar Rally back in Bisha, before taking the overall lead of the event on Stage 2. They held onto the lead for eight straight stages, before briefly relinquishing it to Al Rajhi for one stage. The South African duo regained the lead on the next stage, but this put them at a disadvantage in terms of road position for the penultimate and deciding stage. In the end, they settled for second place, giving Toyota a coveted 1-2 finish at the world’s toughest rally-raid event.

“It was a bittersweet race for us, to come all of this way, do two weeks of racing over thousands of kilometres, late nights, early mornings. And then to miss out by four minutes! But to get onto the podium is fantastic. It’s our first podium and it’s a great achievement. It’s amazing what the team’s done and what we could manage with this race. I’m proud of what we did. We’ll keep trying, we’ll keep pushing this year, we’ll improve the car, we’ll improve ourselves, we’ll gain more experience, and we’ll come back

A delighted Henk Lategan emerging from his car.

stronger next year,” says Lategan.

Californian Seth Quintero and his German co-driver Dennis Zenz (#204) were the nextfastest TGR crew. The pair drove a steady race and overcame various challenges to bring their GR Hilux EVO home in ninth place, just 2h 20min 4sec behind the winners. Were it not for a tyre disaster in Stage 4, the young American may well have finished much higher up the order. Still, he leaves the Dakar Rally with a Top 10 finish, two stage wins, as well as 28 points towards the W2RC.

“I finally feel like I belong, which is the nice thing. After a year of winning here and there, but not being too consistent, to have this one super consistent race is fantastic. Some things that were out of the team’s hands and out of my hands cost us. The whole Toyota team did an amazing job the entire two weeks. I mean, we put in a lot of work the past couple of months, and it paid off for sure. Repsol joined the team this year and it was

massive for us. I mean, renewable fuel is the way of the future, and it’s going to allow us to keep racing forever,” says Quintero.

Lucas Moraes and co-driver Armand Monleon (#203) started their Dakar 2025 campaign in fine form, pushing for the lead in the early stages of the rally.

However, a technical problem with one of the dampers on their car cost the pair significant time during Stage 6 and they were on the back foot from that point forward. A time penalty dropped them down the order and out of contention, but the Brazilian driver and his Spanish co-driver continued to fight for stage wins.

“Yeah, I mean, what can you say? We live and learn, we never lose, we always learn. That’s what we always said. And of course, the overall result was not the one we wanted. But I’m just happy to finish, especially with the stage win. We won the last stage when everybody was pushing. So, it proves that we

have speed. It proves how good the car still is. And I hope we can become stronger next year,” Moraes comments.

Their tenacity was rewarded when they not only bounced back to win Stage 7 of the rally but repeated the feat on the closing stage of the event. With two stage wins to their credit, they are on 18 points in the W2RC standings and recorded a 15th place overall at the Dakar Rally.

The final finisher for TGR was young South African, Saood Variawa, and his French codriver Francois Cazalet. Variawa became the youngest stage winner in the Ultimate Class when he won Stage 3 of the event, but a collision in Stage 2, as well as a technical issue later in the event, cost him dearly. He was classified in 29th place, 9h 29min 56sec behind the leaders. Even so, he garnered 13 points towards his W2RC campaign and will be looking to improve on this at Round 2 of the championship.

A proud moment for South Africa, Ingco and Toyota Gazoo Racing.

DAKAR RALLY EVENTS

“Yeah, it’s amazing. If I look back, last year was obviously the first year for us. This year was a lot tougher, and I think the first week they (the organisers) wanted to break us. But the car was amazing. I’m really happy to finish my second Dakar on my second attempt,” notes Variawa.

Two TGR crews were unable to complete the 2025 Dakar Rally. The first to retire was the veteran duo of Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz, who had to stop racing after Stage 6, when Von Zitzewitz developed extreme neck pain min-stage. He was medically examined after the stage, and deemed unfit to continue, bringing a first Dakar retirement for De Villiers in a career that spanned 22 starts.

and second place. This was a power performance by the brand, underscoring the quality, durability, and reliability for which the Toyota Hilux is famous. The team will continue to improve on the car, however, as part of Toyota’s ethos of creating ever-better cars not only for motorsport, but also for its customers.

The second retirement was that of Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy, who had driven steady race up until Stage 9. They had lost

several hours earlier in the race due to a damper problem but suffered a crash in Stage 9 which put an end to their rally. Overall, Toyota won all but four stages of the 12-stage event, as well as the Prologue in Bisha. Toyota also occupied four spots in the overall Top 10 at the finish, including first

TGR Team Principal Andrea Carlucci comments, “It was a wonderful race, probably the best ever Dakar I’ve seen since we started coming to Saudi Arabia. Of course, for Toyota it’s just an amazing result, P1, P2, many podiums, many first, second, third positions. The car proves to be the winner in a way. A lot of honour, I would also say, to the contenders. They made it very good; it was a race until the very end, it was exciting. This is the spirit of motorsports. We couldn’t ask for more than this.”

back to school: everything begins with buco

As schools reopen and learners across the country get back to their studies, BUCO is bringing smiles to classrooms nationally with its Pencil Case Initiative. This initiative will see BUCO donate 38 000 pencil cases to primary school learners across South Africa and Namibia.

BUCO, renowned for supplying high-quality building materials to communities far and wide, is extending its commitment to building futures by supporting education.

“As a company deeply rooted in local communities, we believe that everything begins with BUCO. This Pencil Case Initiative is our way of equipping learners with tools to achieve their dreams not just this school year, but throughout their education journey.” says TBCo group executive for marketing Lesego Moagi.

He adds that BUCO understands that many learners face challenges, and small acts of support can have a significant impact. These pencil cases are meant to motivate learners to give their best and stay hopeful about a brighter future. Our future employees, leaders, and customers come from these communities, and it’s BUCO’s responsibility to contribute meaningfully to their aspirations.

The Pencil Case Initiative was officially launched on 30 January 2025, with 400 pencil cases donated to each selected school. Schools across all nine provinces in South Africa, as well as Namibia, have been chosen for the initiative. Additionally, each school had the chance to win a R20 000 prize towards a renovation project at their premises through the Golden Pencil Campaign.

As part of the BUCO Pencil Case Initiative, BUCO introduced the Golden Pencil Campaign — an initiative designed to make a lasting impact in schools across South Africa and Namibia. Out of the 38 000 pencil cases being distributed, selected learners will discover a coveted Golden

Dr Frans Aupa Indongo Primary School.

Pencil, unlocking a special reward for their school. Each Golden Pencil winner will contribute to a classroom or key school facility refurbishment, reinforcing BUCO’s commitment to building stronger educational foundations. BUCO believes that every bright future starts with the right tools.

The delivery of the pencil cases has been ongoing since the launch in January, while the campaign for the Golden Pencil, such as the Scavenger Hunt was rolled out in February.

Beyond this initiative, BUCO offers a wide range of over 107 000 building materials available in-store and online. True to its philosophy that everything begins with BUCO, the company remains committed to building strong communities and creating opportunities for learners to thrive.

TBCO supplier Expo 2025: Building better together for a resilient future

The Building Company's (TBCo's) 2025 BUCO and Timbercity Supplier Expo opened at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Tuesday, 11 February 2025. Bringing together 140 branch managers and 110 suppliers, the expo focused on collaborative, sustainable growth in the building materials sector. From expanded product ranges to award-winning partnerships, the event underscored TBCo’s commitment to intelligent growth for a resilient future.

OVERVIEW OF EXPO

Under the theme “Building Better –Siyakha Sonke: Intelligent Growth for a Resilient Future,” the event underscored TBCo’s commitment to collaboration, sustainability, and innovation as key drivers of industry transformation.

DIY & Industrial Trade News attended the Expo and had the privilege to speak to TBCo marketing group executive Lesego Moagi, who explained that the expo was mainly to forge and empower sustainable relationships between supplier and BUCO and Timbercity managers.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF BUCO AND TIMBERCITY OVER FIVE YEARS

“This is our fifth supplier expo, and it’s the largest one we’ve hosted in the past five years. We have moved from hosting the event at the Century City Conference Centre – where we ran out of space – and now have managed to occupy a hall in the CTICC, which shows how much we’ve grown,” said Moagi.

He adds that, not only has BUCO and Timbercity grown, but TBCo is witnessing growth in store footprint, market share as

well as in product range offered to customers. Previously, TBCo identified contractors as their primary customers, who played a crucial role in maintaining the company’s market share and driving notable growth during the challenging post-Covid economic period. Over the past three years, however, TBCo has strategically shifted focus towards the needs of retail and DIY customers. According to Moagi, this shift is reflected in the expanded product ranges now available, the opening of new outlets, and the refurbishment of existing stores.

Overhead view of suppliers and store managers just before the expo commenced.

At the back of this initiative, Moagi mentioned that the key in driving this growth was in ensuring the development of shared marketing goals with their suppliers.

The company emphasises the need for marketing strategies to align with suppliers to positively impact the retail sector and foster holistic growth. Evidently, there has been significant growth in store openings located in strategically chosen areas to serve a broad customer base, including DIY enthusiasts and clients employing contractors for their projects. The company’s objective is to streamline and simplify these projects by offering convenience and strategies that reinforce their position as the leading store for all hardware-related needs. This initiative is part of their intelligent growth theme.

Commenting on the exclusivity as well as what makes TBCo’s expo different from other trade shows in the industry, Moagi points out that the TBCo expo is an ‘invite-only’ event, which is exclusively targeted at BUCO and Timbercity leaders and branch managers.

A notable aspect of the event was that suppliers did not merely send marketing teams to showcase their products; many stands featured the presence of managing directors and CEOs. This was particularly significant, as it enabled direct communication between leaders from both the suppliers and the store, effectively advancing the intelligent growth narrative from the suppliers’ stands.

// TBCo aims to construct a future that unlocks success for suppliers, communities, and customers. This expo is a significant step towards realising that vision //

SUPPPLIER EXPO

SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIPS AND FOCUS ON RETAIL/DIY CUSTOMERS

In an evolving economic and environmental landscape, resilient supply chains remain vital value drivers. At the expo, TBCo CFO Wayne Opperman emphasised the company’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and developing smarter, more sustainable supply networks. Opperman stated, “The strength of our suppliers is the strength of our business. By collaborating closely, we can create supply chains that are both efficient and inclusive, empowering local businesses and driving economic growth.”

He echoed Moagi’s sentiment on the importance of a collaborative approach to foster growth between customers and suppliers.

TBCo is committed to supplier development, ensuring that small and medium-sized enterprises have access to the tools, training, and opportunities needed to thrive in a competitive market. Through interest-free trade accounts, skills training, and digital solutions, the company continues to empower businesses to scale sustainably.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

A highlight of the event was the Supplier Awards Dinner, where top-performing suppliers were recognised for their exceptional contributions to product quality, service excellence, and supply chain innovation.

Former Springbok coach Jake White delivered the keynote speech, drawing on case studies from his coaching career. He emphasised that unpredictability and

challenges are inherent in both sports and business, but persistence is key.

TBCo merchandise group executive Stuart Jowett, emphasised the importance of acknowledging the people and businesses that bring value to the industry:

“The Supplier Awards are a recognition of the partnerships that drive our shared success. We honour all our suppliers for playing a vital role in helping us deliver on our promise to customers and communities.”

THESE WERE THE AWARD WINNERS AND CATEGORIES FOR THE EVENING:

// There has been significant growth in store openings located in strategically chosen areas to serve a broad customer base, including DIY enthusiasts //

LOOKING AHEAD

As the Supplier Expo progresses, TBCo envisions that discussions will centre on future trends, digital transformation, and sustainability within the building materials sector. The event on its own aims to catalyse new ideas, forge strategic partnerships, and

develop collaborative solutions set to shape the industry’s future.

“Our aim is to construct a future that unlocks success for our suppliers, communities, and customers. This expo is a significant step towards realising that vision,” concluded Opperman.

Social investment and future outlook

Beyond business, TBCo remains dedicated to community-driven growth, ensuring that its impact extends beyond industry and into the communities it serves.

Through strategic collaborations and social investment initiatives, TBCo is committed to fostering sustainable change.

• Empowering small businesses with the 2SO App:

Understanding the challenges faced by small contractors and tradespeople, TBCo has invested in the 2SO App. This digital platform is designed to help SMEs manage cash flow, secure projects, and grow their businesses sustainably. By providing tools that simplify transactions and allow access to trade accounts, TBCo ensures that small businesses have the resources needed to pursue growth.

• Transforming communities with Ranyaka:

Ranyaka, a non-profit organisation, collaborates with communities, local stakeholders, all government levels, and investors to develop transformation strategies for towns and communities across South Africa. Through its partnership with Ranyaka, TBCo contributes to revitalising urban areas and townships into vibrant community hubs. These initiatives support education, infrastructure development, and economic participation, benefiting both local businesses and residents by enhancing the local ecosystem.

“We believe that true transformation happens when businesses, communities, and individuals work together towards a shared vision, our goal is to leave a lasting, positive impact. For us, Siyakha Sonke is about creating opportunities that empower everybody who contributes to our success to thrive,” said Moagi.
