The beginning of the 7th administration’s five-year tenure has created positive anticipation across businesses, with reports of the economy stabilising, and investor confidence seemingly rising. However, the same water and power woes still exist in parts of the country, affecting business operations. It remains to be seen how the Government of National Unity will combat long-standing economic pressures to ensure stability for businesses across all industries. We are officially in our 8th issue of the year, and we are excited to present the second instalment of our Retailer’s Guide (page 21). choosing the right generator: a common consumer challenge

The rise of industrialisation and urbanisation has meant that the need for adequate and reliable power supply has become important. Homeowners, like businesses, have also resorted to alternative power solutions.

DIY & Industrial Trade News spoke to generator suppliers who provided expert advice for retailers to share with their customers on how to decide on the best generator for their needs.

L&G Tools

It is essential for retailers to ask consumers which appliances they plan to power with a generator. The required generator size will depend on the number and type of appliances that need to be powered at the same time. Consumers must be aware of both the running wattage and start-up wattage, if applicable, of the appliances they wish to run. A formula can then be utilised to calculate the total required wattage from a generator. The range of generators available to Trade Professionals span from 2.8kW to 10.5kW.

For a more detailed explanation on how to decide the appropriate size of generator needed, retailers are encouraged to visit our YouTube channel and watch the following video: https://youtu.be/ gpB2kXxRJic?si=zk7F0oS1ra496BZB

What are some key points consumers should know about the impact of fuel type on the overall performance of their generator?

Diesel generators are ideal for powering large machinery, while petrol generators are better suited for households and smaller machinery. Diesel generators are known for their superior fuel efficiency, as diesel burns 50% slower than petrol. However, the rising cost of diesel due to regulations and higher emissions produced by diesel fuel are important considerations. On the other hand, petrol generators are generally easier to start and more cost effective to maintain.

that have emerged that retailers can share with customers interested in integrating a generator with other renewable energy sources?

Sinewave generators offer a reliable and stable power supply that closely mimics the electricity received from the grid. This consistent power source greatly minimises the risk of damage to our devices caused by power surges. In addition, sinewave generators run with significantly less noise compared to traditional generators. Trade Professional provides Power Stations and Inverter Generators equipped with pure sine wave technology, catering to customers seeking a renewable energy solution as an alternative to traditional generators.

Some generators are also suitable for DIY construction projects, home renovations or even home workshops for DIY enthusiasts. Which generators are best suited for such projects that retailers can recommend to customers?

Petrol generators are ideal for powering general household equipment such as lights, pumps, domestic appliances, and power tools making them a popular choice among DIY enthusiasts. On the other hand, diesel generators are better suited for powering large construction sites and industrial machinery.

With renewable energy being on the rise and people exploring their options , what are some of the notable generator technologies

Generators are essential tools that provide power during outages, but it is important to be aware of the potential dangers associated with their use. One such danger is the production of carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless, and poisonous gas that can cause serious injuries or even death if levels become too high. To prevent this, generators should never be operated indoors, including in homes, garages, or other enclosed spaces. An automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is a crucial component found in generators that serves the purpose of automatically adjusting voltage levels, ensuring a consistent output of power. Trade Professional generators come equipped with an AVR to maintain stable voltage levels.

In South Africa, where power cuts and load shedding are common, choosing the right generator for household use is crucial.

RETAILERS CAN RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF GENERATORS FOR HOUSEHOLD BACKUP POWER:

a . PORTABLE GENERATORS:

Advantages: Easy to move, relatively affordable, and versatile for use in different locations.

Best for: Short-term power outages and powering essential appliances like refrigerators, lights, and electronics.

b. INVERTER GENERATORS:

Advantages: Produces clean power suitable for sensitive electronics, quieter, and more fuel- efficient.

Best for: Homes with electronic devices, small appliances, and lower power needs.

What are some key points consumers should know about the impact of fuel type on the overall performance of their generator?

CONSIDER FUEL TYPE:

• Petrol (Gasoline): Widely available but requires proper storage and handling. Gasoline, as a fuel source, is likely the easiest to come by. It is suitable for most generators – as long as they produce less than 150 kW of power – and is most used by individuals with residential backup generators.

• Diesel: More fuel-efficient and longerlasting but often noisier and costlier.

NOISE LEVEL:

Check the decibel rating, especially if you live in a densely populated area. Inverter generators are typically quieter than conventional ones.

RUNTIME AND FUEL EFFICIENCY:

Look for generators with long runtimes and efficient fuel consumption, especially if outages last several hours.

NOW also available from PowerMaster; LPG Conversion kit for 5kva to 7.5kva generators converting petrol generators to gas with dual function; giving the user an option to switch between petrol and gas. By simply replacing the carburettor; with a dual fuel carburettor;

enables a saving of up to 50% on fuel. With the dual-fuel carburettor; the user can easily switch between using petrol and gas. (Only use a qualified technician to do the conversion).

2

Some generators are also suitable for DIY construction projects, home renovations or even home workshops for DIY enthusiasts. Which generators are best suited for such projects that retailers can recommend to customers?

a. Portable vs standby generators: Which is better for construction? The most common type used at construction sites is a portable generator. As the name suggests, a portable generator can be moved to different areas of the job site to power different tools and equipment, as needed.

b. Choosing a generator depends mainly on the size a home and what the user needs to power. The average house will take at least 5 000 to 7 500 watts to run only the most

critical equipment – think fridge, heat, and water. Often, a portable home generator can get you through an outage, but there are also options that can power an entire house. If you’re looking for full power, you will want to invest in at least a 10 000-watt generator; this also goes for people with exceptionally large homes or families, which will use more power than, say, a two- or three-person household.

3

With renewable energy being on the rise and people exploring their options what are some of the notable generator technologies that have emerged that retailers can share with their customers who are interested in integrating generators with other renewable energy sources?

Of all South African renewable energy sources, solar holds the most potential. Because of the country’s geographic location, it receives an abundance of solar energy.

GENERATORS

Ryobi

With our wide range of Ryobi generators and generator inverters there are multiple options for various household requirements. The most reliable way to calculate which generator is best for your customer’s household, is by calculating the total required wattage necessary. Watts are calculated by multiplying the voltage needed in Volts by the current in Amps.

For example, if your household uses on average 500 Volts x 3 Amps you need a +1500-Watt generator or inverter generator. However, If you purchase a generator that provides 3000 Watts you build in extra capacity to ensure that you do not overload the generator. Suitable options would be the RG-3500 Generator or the RG-3000i Inverter Generator or the RG-3200i Inverter Generator.

A TYPICAL HOUSEHOLD WOULD REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING TO RUN DURING A POWER OUTAGE:

• Refrigerator • TV • Decoder

• Kettle • Wifi • Plugs

• Lights.

It is not recommended to run household items that use an element that draws high levels of Wattage such as microwaves, geysers, ovens, stoves, hairdryers, etc.

1

What are some key points consumers should know about the impact of fuel type on the overall performance of their generator?

It is imperative for customers to know which fuel is needed for their generator. Diesel, Petrol, Propane, and Natural gas are the four most common options when it comes to fuelling your generator. For Ryobi Generators we use Unleaded Petrol only. The only difference is in the Oil – 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines

which is indicated in the handy owner’s manual for each Ryobi Generator Model. When storing your generator, it is also recommended to empty the fuel tank to prevent a buildup of debris.

2

Some generators are also suitable for DIY construction projects, home renovations or even home workshops for your DIY enthusiasts. Which generators are best suited for such projects that retailers can advise customers to buy?

The most suitable generators to use for DIY construction projects from the Ryobi Range are the 5.5kVa Petrol Generator (RG-6900K) or the 6.5kVa Ryobi Petrol Generator (RG-7900K) as they produce enough power to operate the machinery required. Additionally, they have a run time of up to 8 hours.

3

With renewable energy being on the rise and people exploring their options in this avenue, what are some of the notable generator technologies that have emerged that retailers can share insight on with their customers who are interested in integrating their generators with other renewable energy sources?  AVR, Auto-Start and Dual-Fuel and Change Over Switches are some of the leading technological advances emerging in the market for generators and generator inverters.

WINDOW AND DOOR FRAMES

how to choose the right window and door frames Debunking myths

When choosing what your door and window frames should be made of many householders think it’s a simple question of cost. Not so, says Mark Smith, Technical Manager at REHAU: “When choosing between the various materials on hand, a holistic view is essential to ensure you get the best value for your money over the long term.

Multiple factors need to be taken into account.”

The four primary materials between which homeowners and their architects could choose – steel, timber, aluminium, and uPVC –stack up very differently, but the key is always to take all the factors into consideration.

HERE’S A GUIDE TO KEEP IN MIND:

Steel is the cheapest material, but it is susceptible to rust, and the putty used to fix the glazing in place cracks over time, letting water into the frame. Regular painting of

the steel and replacement of the putty is necessary. Steel windows and doors don’t fit tightly, making it susceptible to water and wind. It is also an excellent conductor of heat, so it is thermally very inefficient, meaning a less comfortable building that is more expensive to heat or cool. Thermal inefficiency also means that the material does not suppress noise well.

On the plus side, it can be painted any colour easily.

// Depending on style and affordability, steel, timber, aluminium and uPVC are four primary materials that homeowners and architects use as options for door and window frames //

Timber has a similarly high burden of maintenance, requiring annual or biannual varnishing and repair, depending on the climate. The timber quality is also a factor in its longevity, with imported timber typically preferred. In the rainy season, timber tends to swell, but if you sand it, it is unlikely to fit snugly in winter when the wood contracts. Timber scores high on looks and is a very poor conductor of heat, so it is thermally very efficient and reduces noise.

Aluminium has an undeserved reputation for being maintenance free. Truthfully, its anodised coating, if properly specified for the prevailing climate, is resistant to rust but the way it is constructed makes it vulnerable to leaks. The problem is that the corners are joined by crimping, with silicon used to seal against water. When the silicon degrades, as it usually does, water can penetrate. The only solution is to renew the silicon inside the corner, no easy task. Like steel, aluminium is an excellent conductor of heat, so it is thermally inefficient – a hotter house in summer, colder in winter.

its internal structure includes channels to take any moisture out of the frame.

While typical uPVC is white, REHAU has invested in a local paint plant to provide the market with a range of popular colours off the shelf: Charcoal, Anthracite grey, black and bronze. Coloured uPVC will require some colour maintenance, but this can be done by the homeowner very easily.

The internal construction is based on chambers, which provide a ‘hermal break’, which makes it thermally efficient – it also insulates the inside of the building from external noise. Smith says after replacing all his window frames with uPVC, the internal temperature of his house in winter went from 11-13°C to 16-17°C.

Of course, heat transfer is only one element in a house’s thermal efficiency –other factors include the material out of which the walls are constructed and roof insulation.

Previously, uPVC was priced significantly more than competitor products, but REHAU

compared with uPVC,” he notes. “Another critical point is that the long-term costs of maintenance must also form part of the decision process, along with the long- term costs for heating and cooling.”

REHAU client, John Long, says that he replaced his existing steel frames with uPVC because of the maintenance they required, and the lack of insulation against cold/ heat and wind. Since making the move, he has found huge benefit in the insulation, with a marked differential between the interior comfort level and the outside ambient temperature, with less energy required to control comfort levels. With double glazing installed, he estimates that outside noise has been reduced by around 80%.

Long says additional benefits include the convenience of the tilt and turning windows upstairs – as all windows can now easily be cleaned from the inside without the need for ladders. “And the multiple locks on the windows and doors for extra security as well as the film in the

The value generation of sealants grew by +3% when comparing the YTD (Jan-May 24) against the same period last year, marginally above the market average growth of +2.3% for the whole paint department. Combined with adhesives this segment provides 7% of the total value generation and 15% in volume contribution to the overall. Within sealants the silicone segment expanded by +3.1% YTD while their acrylic counterparts shrunk by –1.1% YTD. The smaller sub-segment is generally positive however due to lower volumes more volatile in their performance.

The average price for sealants increased to R77 or +3.3% Year-on-Year (YoY) below the official South African inflation number of +5.2%. Acrylic sealants rose by +8.8% YoY to an average price of R47. In contrast silicone sealants were almost price stable at +1,6% YoY or R86 while polyurethane sealants deflated to R182 or -1,1% YoY.

industry, companies have responded with innovation that has expanded their range of products – that are categorised under sealants – which contributes positively to the industry.

Within sealants more than half of the monthly turnover contribution is generated by silicone sealants, their volume share slightly below the halfway mark. For May silicone stood at 52% in value and 47% in units. Acrylic sealants generate less value than their silicone counterparts with a volume share of 45% in May versus a value position at 27% for the same month. Polyurethane is more extreme with just 6% of the sales but almost 15% in value contribution.

About 57% of all sealants sales are generated at price points < R100 per item. The most popular price band is R75 < R100 which generates almost quater of the value by itself. Most silicone and acrylic sealants are sold between R50 < R100 (40%), however, smaller capacities (for example 90ml) are popular below this threshold. Price points >= R100 have declined over the last few months as consumers focus on more affordable alternatives although speciality sealants tend retail at significantly higher price points than the market average.

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

The price points of the major brands reflect their specific focus within sealants. Market leader Alcolin generally generates its turnover by equal contributions of acrylic and silicone sealants (45% vs 55% in May 24). The average price for Alcolin was R66 it increased by +7.8% YoY well above the market average. Bostik retails at R98 or +8.5% YoY, however, its price position has been volatile. Bostik’ focuses on silicone sealants exclusively. Den Braven’s average price of R95 is very similar to Bostik but the brand has remained price stable and has a wider product scope. Gluedevil is a smaller player in sealants and retails at R76 down by –8.9% YoY. Sika focuses on specialty, hence the higher price point of R224. Soudal is the most balanced brand with almost equal shares in each sub-segment of sealants resulting in an average price of R70 (-5,6% YoY).

Under the umbrella of acrylic sealants Alcolin generates most of its turnover with the Contractor product family at 86%. In contrast Den Braven and Soudal only have one active product family within acrylic with DBV Acrylic and SDL Paintable respectively. Although the other segments are small in unit share its value share is positioned well above that of the larger competitors reaching price points above the R100 mark.

Silicone sealants are the largest sub-group of sealants and are characterised by a very high number of different product families competing. Pricing is split with a third of the items retailing above the R100 threshold led by Alcolin and Bostik. The former generates two thirds of its revenue with the Contractor product family followed by the Silicone group at 17% and then K86 at 11%.

For Bostik 96% originates from the standard Silicone product family with Powermastic adding just 3% of the revenues. Soudal derives 85% of its turnover with the Universal product family plus 12% from the Repair segment while Den Braven is mostly DIY (85%) plus 12% from the Silicone No-MF group.

Other sealants tend to be speciality items thus the high price points. In particular Sika focuses with its Sikaflex 11FC at these higher price bands generating 95% of the Sika turnover. Soudal uses two product families: Fill and Fix (48%) and Soudaflex (52%). In contrast Den Braven used to be more diversified but in May 73% of the revenue in other sealants originated from Polyflex.

Africa Tanks – Transforming lives and livelihoods

In South Africa, water supply is increasingly uncertain due to a combination of deteriorating infrastructure, environmental degradation, persistent droughts, and disparities in water and sanitation access.

These issues are highlighted by the findings in the 2023 Blue Drop Report, which indicates that 47% of municipal tap water is now classified as non-revenue water due to leaking pipes, faulty meters, illegal connections, and poor revenue collection. Particularly concerning is KwaZulu-Natal, where non-revenue water reaches 60.5%, contrasting sharply with the Western Cape’s 27%, which aligns with global norms of between 20% and 30%. Even more alarming, 64% of South Africa’s sewage and wastewater treatment systems are at ‘high or critical’ risk of releasing partially treated or untreated water into our rivers and the environment. Among the 151 water service authorities and water boards in South Africa, only 5% of systems are deemed excellent, 31% are in good condition, 49% are average and 3% are in critical condition.

Given these dire circumstances, the need for reliable water storage that adhere to strict safety and hygiene standards is paramount. This is where Africa Tanks steps in, transforming lives and livelihoods with a product that combines quality and affordability. Founded in 2017, Africa Tanks uses a unique manufacturing process involving three layers of UV protected High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), a thermoplastic polymer produced from monomer ethylene. This material is free from BPA, phthalates, heavy metals, and allergens, making it the most environmentally stable of all plastics. Africa Tanks continues to grow from strength to strength, addressing the urgent need for safe and reliable water storage solutions across Southern Africa.

FABRICATION

Aluminium fabrication made easy with Superflex

More aluminium is produced each year than any other non-ferrous metal. The demand for aluminium outweighs the supply offered in the market which is evident in its current market price.

Becoming increasingly popular due to its many benefits, aluminium and its alloys are used in the fabrication of various items ranging from pressurised vessels and automotive components right to the domestic use of foil for cooking and baking purposes. Although offering a lighter weight and characteristics that prevents rust unless contaminated aluminium poses a few more challenges when working with and preparing a surface compared to conventional ferrous metals. Metal contamination is a major cause of component and weld failure and occur either through – direct contamination when using the incorrect abrasive products, cross contamination when using the same abrasives on multiple materials, or general contamination due to improper processing of materials in the work environment.

Direct contamination occurs when conventional cutting and grinding discs for steel are used for applications on aluminium.

Abrasive cutting and grinding discs, as well as coated abrasive flap discs, are designed and manufactured with various components that make up the final product. Some of these components like fibre reinforcing, are added to provide structure and support to the final product for strength and support to avoid breakage and damages when in use. Together with these components, other additives are also added into the mix to provide better results, usually by increasing the oxidative and corrosive effect in mild or carbon steels. However, such oxidative and corrosive compounds (iron, sulphur, and chlorine) can cause major issues down the production line when used on aluminium applications. If the work piece is

not thoroughly cleaned of these compounds, should it become contaminated, subsequent welding processes will also be influenced and might cause welds not penetrating well, or porosity that will lead to weak welds that can cause catastrophic failures if not resolved.

To avoid cross contamination, care should be taken to avoid using abrasive products on mild or carbon steel, and then on aluminium. Even though abrasive products are manufactured to be free of contaminants, unwanted Iron, sulphur, and chlorine compounds will be introduced when used on mild or carbon steel, which will be transferred to the aluminium upon contact.

It needs to be noted that general workspace contamination can also contribute to the contamination of various materials. Ideally, a floor layout should be planned in such a way that different material types are processed at opposite ends of a factory. This will ensure (to an extent) that swarf created during cutting, blending, or

grinding operations of ferrous metals, will not come into contact with aluminium metals within the vicinity, thereby eliminating the possibility of contaminating materials.

Grinding Techniques locally manufactures specialised abrasive products free of contaminants which are perfectly suited to applications on both ferrous, and non-ferrous metals, with the Superflex non-ferrous range specifically manufactured for use on aluminium to ensure applications don’t burn, contaminate, or discolour the workpiece. Boasting an extensive selection of abrasives for non-ferrous application, we aim to provide a solution to almost any cutting-and -grinding application.

walking the “tork” in the groundbreaking rhisotope project

In a monumental effort to combat rhino poaching and ensure the survival of these magnificent creatures, Tork Craft has joined forces with Wits University in the innovative Rhisotope Project.

Recognising the urgent need for action to save rhinos, Tork Craft eagerly stepped in to support this pioneering initiative, which aims to use nuclear technology to protect rhino populations. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in conservation efforts, combining cutting-edge science with practical hardware solutions.

RHINOS SAVING PEOPLE, PEOPLE SAVING RHINOS, SCIENCE SAVING RHINOS

The Rhisotope Project stands for a transformative approach to rhino conservation. Traditional methods such as horn poisoning and removal have proven either ineffective or detrimental to the animals’ well-being. The Rhisotope Project leverages nuclear medicine – a field extensively used in human healthcare – to develop a novel solution for protecting rhinos. Through meticulous computer modelling, the project ensures that the insertion of radioisotopes into rhino horns does not harm the animals.

This innovative method has several key advantages:

• Detection at borders: Radioactive scanners at international borders can detect attempts to move radioactive rhino horns.

• Deterrence through awareness: Signage at reserves and local education campaigns will inform the public that rhino horns contain radioactive chips, making them worthless. The natural fear of radioactive materials is expected to dissuade potential buyers and reduce demand.

TORK CRAFT’S CRUCIAL ROLE

On June 25, media representatives witnessed a historic moment as the Rhisotope Project entered a new testing phase. The procedure involved the insertion of radioisotopes into the horns of 20 live rhinos. This complex process required the use of strong, reliable cordless drills with high-quality drill bits to minimise discomfort for the animals. Tork Craft donated these essential tools, ensuring the procedure was quick and stress-free. Observers noted the efficiency and care with which the rhinos were handled, highlighting

the critical role Tork Craft’s equipment played in this groundbreaking endeavour.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

After three years of dedicated research, the Rhisotope Project team, led by Professor James Larkin from Wits University’s Radiation and Health Physics Unit, successfully inserted low doses of radioisotopes into the rhinos. Over the next six months, the health and vital statistics of these rhinos will be closely monitored to assess the viability of this approach.

The project’s ultimate goal is to use nuclear technology to create long-lasting and detectable horn markers that are safe for the animals and the environment. In the future, this method could be expanded to protect other endangered species such as elephants and pangolins.

The Rhisotope Project is being piloted in the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and aims to utilise the existing global nuclear security infrastructure. This includes over 11 000 radiation detection

portal monitors at airports, harbours, and land crossings, and trained personnel equipped with radiation detectors.

THE BROADER IMPACT

Professor Larkin emphasises the urgency of this initiative, noting that a rhino is killed for its horn every 20 hours in South Africa. These horns, trafficked globally, fund a wide array of criminal activities. By devaluing rhino horns and making them easier to detect, the Rhisotope Project aims to disrupt this illegal trade.

Starting on June 24, 2024, Professor Larkin and his team carefully sedated the 20 rhinos and drilled small holes into their horns to insert the non-toxic radioisotopes. The animals will be monitored around the clock to ensure their well-being. Extensive research has ensured that the inserted radioisotopes pose no health risks to the rhinos or their caretakers

The Rhisotope Project demonstrates how crossdisciplinary research and innovation can make a significant impact. Professor Lynn Morris, deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation at Wits University, praises the project as an example of research with real-world implications. This initiative not only aims to eradicate the threat of extinction for rhinos but also seeks to educate and uplift local communities, with a special focus on empowering women and girls.

Tork Craft’s involvement in the Rhisotope Project underscores the vital role that industry partnerships play in conservation efforts. By providing the tools needed to implement this innovative solution, Tork Craft is helping to pave the way for a future where rhinos—and potentially other endangered species –can thrive. This collaboration is a testament to the power of
