Pendant light trends Pendant lights are a big trend currently. Here’s five issues to tell your customer to consider before buying and hanging pendant lights from a ceiling.

GOAL The first question to ask is, “what is the purpose of the pendant?”. Is it to provide ‘task lighting’ for a specific activity or is it needed to give a room a general level of ambient light? If you’re hanging a pendant over a kitchen island to see better during food prep or next to the bed to serve as a reading light then look for a design that offers a controlled beam of light in a downward direction. If the goal of the pendant light is to provide ambient lighting then you want to make sure that the light output is sufficient to illuminate the entire room comfortably. You also want the light to be diffused. PROPORTIONS The proportions of the space that is going to be illuminated is going to dictate what size and how many pendants are needed. A small room with a low ceiling requires a pendant with a minimum drop to ensure no one’s head touches it when they walk across the room. A minimum drop will also prevent the room from looking cluttered by the addition of a pendant light suspended from the ceiling. If the room is compact then a pendant with a fairly small diameter is going to work best. A large fixture will overwhelm the space. On the other end of the spectrum, a big room or space with high ceilings needs a large pendant or multiple pendants. Pendants suspended in double volume spaces must have a considerable drop in order to not look out of place or lost. ENVIRONMENT The bathroom is not the only room in the home that calls for careful consideration of lighting choice.

Depending on the size and layout of a kitchen, you may need to check if the IP (Ingress Protection) rating of the pendant you like is appropriate. Like the bathroom, the kitchen is a partial wet zone in the home. The kitchen environment produces steam, water vapour, heat and grease. If your pendant is in a zone where it may come into contact with steam or liquid then a pendant with a higher IP rating is preferable. Also, consider exposure to grease. A pendant design made from easy-to-clean material and simple in shape is going to be easier to wipe away grease and keep clean. LOCATION Before suspending a pendant anywhere make sure that you’re happy with the location of the furniture, especially when moving into a new home. For example, if you hang a pendant above a table and then decide that you actually don’t like the location of the table, it’s a hassle to move the pendant and leaving it in place means it’s likely to have no relationship with the new furniture or lack of furniture below it. NUMBER It’s not a rule and it certainly isn’t always possible, but try hanging an odd number of pendant lights in a group as opposed to an even number. It’s an old styling trick that works for all decorative objects in the home, not just lighting. They generally look better when arranged in groups of three or five. This amount gives the eye a central object to rest on. If you’re installing a cluster of pendants you may also want to see how they look suspended at different heights. This was due to a safety risk to the consumer as the straining of the socketoutlet can cause a short-circuit between the neutral and live pins. This symbol has to be embossed on the adaptor to warn consumers on the danger of plugging adaptors from one another • Examples are provided to show how multiple switched socket-outlets for fixed installation should be switched • Since 2018 the wiring code (SANS 101421) requires socket-outlets in electrical installations to be of the SANS 164-2, at every socket outlet point, however other configurations (such as SANS 164-1) may also be installed onto the same outlet • The changes in SANS 164-0 are generic to all the SANS 164 series of standards namely Part 1 to Part 6. This means that SANS 164 series of plugs and socketoutlets have to comply with SANS 164-0.

In Thabazimbi — a town known for agricultural activities as well as being a popular hunting destination, you’ll find Konstructica Hardeware & Boumateriaal; a store with a rich history and a customer of EUREKA DIY for the past 28 years. We visited them to hear their story The store opened in 1972 and was called Thaba Sentraal Boumateriaal. Current owner, Rudi Nel, moved to Thabazimbi in 1989 to pursue an opportunity in the construction industry. At the time, he had a construction company called Konstructica and was a store regular because it was the only hardware store in town. A short while later, the store started struggling financially and could no longer afford to buy stock from its suppliers. This was a problem for people like Rudi who needed building material, hardware and paint to run his construction business. “In 1992, I purchased the store (which was basically bankrupt) and changed the name to Konstructica Hardeware & Boumateriaal”, says Rudi. The early days were very challenging — Rudi remembers the store had about 20 tins of paint but no two were the same - meaning a person was not able to buy more than one tin. “None of the enamels was the same colour and even the PVAs were all different, so we couldn’t even mix them”, explains Rudi.

Over the next couple of years, their hard work and perseverance paid dividends as they turned the store around. Stocking EUREKA In the beginning, Konstructica still sold screws, nuts and bolts loose. Customers wanting to buy screws had to ask a staff member to count out the correct amount, weigh them, price them and only then could the customer pay for it — a frustrating and expensive process. It did not take long for Konstructica to get onto EUREKA’s radar and for the Sales Representative to visit Rudi. “When the rep came here the first time and showed me the EUREKA concept, I declined on the basis that it was too expensive. She came back a few more times, but each time left empty-handed. Then, one day, we just got tired of counting these screws and I agreed to give the EUREKA concept a chance”, says Rudi. Circa 1992, EUREKA reps would drive around with trucks, going store to store, taking orders and fulfilling the order on the spot. But in 1995, EUREKA introduced computer software known as Sales Support System (SSS — pronounced triple-S) that would consider a product’s sales history in a specific store and predict that product’s refill amount so that the store carries the optimal amount.

A notable change was that the rep would visit the store to take the order and a week later the EUREKA truck came past to deliver the stock.

EUREKA launched SSS during an event held at Sun City and that evening Konstructica Hardeware & Boumateriaal won the prize for the store that showed the best growth.

“Indeed, they have many other benefits as well and a major one is that we don’t need to carry any specific branding — our store stays truly independent.

As Rudi explains, “In the beginning, we only stocked two EUREKA stands and within a few months it expanded to such an extent that we stocked EUREKA’s entire range of the time”.

All that is required to be a member of the biggest buying group in the country is to pay your yearly membership fee”, explains Rudi.

Rudi embraced the changed and categorically states that the EUREKA way simply works. “It worked back then, and it works today. The rep takes the order and a few days later the stock gets delivered and merchandised and there is minimal intervention from our side — it’s very convenient”, explains Rudi. Member of EST Building & Hardware Konstructica joined EST Building & Hardware and was their 101st member and they offered Konstructica just what they needed. “When we joined EST, they already had agreements with various suppliers, among them EUREKA and, another important one for us, a major cement supplier. At the time, we bought and sold large amounts of cement and by joining EST, the rebate we received from the supplier increased significantly”, says Rudi. He explains, as a member, they also benefited from the agreement EST had with the bank that Konstructica banks with to pay less for card transactions.

It’s a team effort Asked about store highlights, Rudi didn’t name specific events but instead explained that every day you’re able to still do business (especially in challenging times such as COVID-19) is a highlight.

And that it is only possible when you have an amazing team. “From the person buying the products to the security who checks it out at the door and everyone in-between is involved in the success of Konstructica”, states Rudi. EUREKA DIY would like to thank Konstructica for their continued support over the past 28 years — a store that truly is a Hardware Hero. We look forward to what the next three decades bring.
