industry bodies lead the way in compliance
In business, regulations and laws are pertinent in governing the flow of business to ensure that the rules are fair for every player. But for every law, industry bodies that hold companies and businesses accountable for certain standards have proven to be competent custodians of the rules of operation as well as upholding high standards in industry. However, when we begin to see the winding-down of such bodies as is the case with CSSA (see page 50) due to the lack of infrastructure investment, then we know that our economy is on the verge of collapsing. Now that we have cast our votes, we can only hope that the next regime of political leaders in the country come wearing a ‘problem-solving hat’ to correct former misfortunes and birth new ideas that will resuscitate the
economy. In this issue, we look at the CBS Build It successful soccer tournament held in Edenvale last month (page 58), read up on Vermont’s Adventure into Metal exhibition (page 64).

YOUNG MANAGERS IN BUSINESS
embracing generational innovation in business
Based in KwaZulu-Natal, Topline Tools is a company driven by its global quest to seek out new products that will add value to the South African market. The company’s instinctive nature allows it to service the immediate and long-term requirements of its customers. Regardless of the scale of their business, Topline Tools believes that each customer is equally important. The Broughton brothers, Warren, and Ryan, take us through their roles and responsibilities in this successful family business that has embraced generational innovation.
Topline Tools is a family business, can tell us more about the history of the business from its inception until now?
In a rapidly evolving business landscape, adaptability and innovation are paramount to sustaining growth and relevance. As we celebrate Youth Month in June, we shine a spotlight on young managers who are both navigating and driving change to ensure their businesses thrive. 1 2 3
• Topline Tools started in 1988 when our father, Derek, started importing products from China. Topline Tools was one of the first branded ranges of hand tools in South Africa to supply the hardware industry and is still one of South Africa’s most trusted ‘Proudly South African’ brands.
• Over the past 36 years that we have been in business, we have been agents for many top international brands as well as importers of white label brands for specific customers across the tools, garden, and safety categories.
Can you describe the transition journey at Topline Tools, including when you joined and in what role, when you transitioned from employee to manager, when you assumed leadership from your father, and how you currently collaborate to sustain the company’s success?
• Warren joined Topline from the finance Industry in 2001 and started off as a sales agent in Johannesburg and its surroundings and grew the customer base substantially in five years. Then when Derek bought out his initial partners, Warren moved to the head office in Durban to run the financial side of the business.
• Ryan joined Topline in 2007 from the creative advertising industry to assist with the marketing and sales side of the newly acquired business.
Reflecting on your experience, what foundational elements have contributed most to your success as young leaders within the business?
• While we feel we still have so much to
learn in an ever-changing landscape, the foundational elements that have made Topline Tools a success over the years revolve around creating solid relationships/ partnerships based on honesty and consistent quality and pricing. For those who know us, we like to work hard and play hard and have surrounded ourselves with a team cherry-picked for their passion and drive to be a success in all facets of life and business.
• In addition, as brothers, we have an unbreakable bond and respect for each other which allows us to work closely day in and day out without much fuss, always for the good of our company and our loyal customers.
4
Please elaborate on your key roles and responsibilities you hold in your respective positions.
• Our key responsibilities have not changed since we joined Topline finance and marketing respectively, but as a small-medium family business, we are integrally involved in nearly every facet of the business including buying, sales, human resourcing, and sourcing.
• We have a very consultative top management structure where all the important decisions are made by consensus after robust discussion.
FEATURE
YOUNG MANAGERS IN BUSINESS
Innovative change and adaptability are crucial in today’s business environment. Please expand on new approaches and managerial styles that you have introduced to propel the company forward.
• Innovation is always at the heart of our business whether it be internal or external, sales, marketing, sourcing, or buying. We have a compact management team, so we are always flexible and able to move quickly when necessary.
• Since the onset of Covid where we had an incredible growth year, Topline, like most other businesses in the industry and beyond has been under pressure due to many factors, some in and some out of our control. This adaptability and flexibility allowed us to make quick, ruthless, and sometimes painful decisions, which has dramatically improved the health of the business.
• Most importantly, we feel that coming through these tough, trying times taught us a lot about business and made us a stronger unit with a more focused mindset.
7 5
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Looking ahead, what are your strategic projections and aspirations for the business over the next five years?
• We have big plans for the next five years from new projects to new categories to new customers to new territories.
• We want to consolidate and grow in our core categories and introduce new and innovative concepts to the industry. But most importantly, and this is our driving force, we just want to continue to provide our customers with the best value for money products and ranges on the market.
Yes, in closing I would just like to say that none of our success would have been possible without our loyal customers and fantastic staff and management that live and breathe the Topline way every single day. From our father and founder Derek, to Thembi, to Ravi, to Damien, all our sales agents and our brother and buyer Andrew, we certainly have the young, dynamic, and hungry team to take us into the future.

winter gardening tools care
Your essential guide
As the trees shed their leaves and the grass fades to brown, signaling the arrival of winter, seize the chance to conduct a thorough inventory of your gardening tools, gearing up for the vibrant renewal of spring ahead. DIY and Industrial Trade News shares valuable advice for retailers to pass on to their DIY enthusiasts, guiding them on winter preparation for gardening tools and suggesting essential equipment to stock up on during the season.
As the cool days of winter approach, it is essential to prepare not only your garden but also your trusted garden tools for the season ahead. Proper storage of your garden tools during the winter months can extend their lifespan and save your customers money in the long run. Gardena provides a step-bystep guide on how to store your garden tools for winter, ensuring they will be in perfect working condition and be in tip-top shape when spring arrives.
Step 1 – Inspect and clean the tools
The first and most crucial step is inspecting your tools and deciding the best method to clean them. Avoid rust and corrosion from moisture and plant residues, which could damage tools over the winter.
FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO ENSURE YOUR TOOLS ARE CLEAN AND IN GOOD CONDITION:
Gather your tools: Collect all your garden tools, including shovels, rakes, pruners, and hoes.
Remove dirt and debris: Use a wire brush or a putty knife to scrape off any caked-on dirt or debris from your tools. Wash with water: Use a hose or a bucket of soapy water to wash your tools thoroughly. A stiff-bristle brush can help remove stubborn grime.
1 2 3 4
Dry completely: After washing, let your tools air dry to prevent any moisture from causing rust.
While cleaning, take the time to inspect your tools for signs of damage.
Did you know ?
Gardena’s tools are duroplast coated that protects from corrosion, making this task much easier and ensuring your tools survive the winter and are ready for the next gardening season.

GARDENING EQUIPMENT
Step 2 – Sharpen and oil
Once your garden tools are clean and dry, it is a good time to sharpen and oil them. Sharp tools make gardening tasks more manageable and efficient.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS
Sharpen the blades: Use a sharpening stone or a file to sharpen the edges of your pruners, shears, and other cutting tools. Oil the metal parts: To prevent rust, apply a light coat of oil to the metal parts of your tools. Household oil works well for this purpose. Wipe off any excess oil to avoid attracting dirt.
Step 4 – Store properly
Did you know ?
Blades on Gardena’s cutting tools are non-stick coated protecting the product and the secateurs have drainage preventing plant sap build up.
The final step is to store your garden tools properly for the winter.
FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR TOOLS REMAIN IN EXCELLENT CONDITION
Organise and hang: Arrange your tools in an organised manner by hanging them on a storage bracket – we recommend the Gardena combisystem storage rack. This will prevent them from leaning on each other and causing damage.
Tips on maintaining your gardening machines
The wooden handles of your garden tools need special attention to prevent cracks and splinters.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO CARE FOR YOUR TOOL HANDLES
Inspect for damage: Check wooden handles for cracks, splinters, or signs of wear.
Sand and smooth: If you find any imperfections, sand the handle to remove rough spots and splinters.
Apply wood treatment: To keep wooden handles in good condition, apply a wood preservative. Allow it to soak in and dry before storage.
Did you know ?
All wooden handles in Gardena range are sourced from FSC certified, sustainable forests that preserve biodiversity.
Store in a dry place: Keep your tools in a dry, sheltered location, such as a shed, garage, or workshop. Moisture can lead to rust and corrosion. Use a tool rack or storage caddy: The Gardena combisystem storage rack will keep your tools organised and within easy reach when spring arrives. Taking the time to properly store your

As the seasons change and your garden springs to life again, it’s time to pull out your favourite Ryobi gardening power tools and get stuck into those pressing gardening projects. The tips and tricks below will ensure that you extract the most out of your gardening tools. Equally important, these tips will also educate you on the maintenance necessary for your safety, as well as to extend the longevity of your tools.
Always check the owner’s manuals for recommended maintenance guides. In this manual you will learn about the optimal operating parameters for your Ryobi tools, and how often they need to be inspected. For example, when working with your Petrol Brush Cutter (RBC-4300), you will learn about the correct petrol to 2-stroke oil mixing ratios to keep your engine healthy and to maximise the life span of your unit. It is also important to use the correct blade that is both sharp and in good condition.

after every use. Look for build-up of debris such as grass, leaves or mud, and remove it. Also, make sure that no components have become loose from vibration during use. Wipe down any oil or petrol spills and replace blades that have become blunt or broken as well as worn nylon heads. These are all key steps that will make 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2
Always remember that any petrol unit needs regular services that can be undertaken either by yourself under the guidance of the owner’s manual or from your local Ryobi service centre

your next use of your Ryobi tools so much more enjoyable. In our Ryobi Cordless One Plus range, we offer Ryobi 18V Cordless Reel Mower (XRM-18) that has the advantage of no extension cable, easier manoeuvrability, less maintenance, and lower noise levels.
Did you know ?
The major benefit to our Ryobi Cordless One Plus range, is that one battery fits all our Ryobi Cordless One Plus products.
Step 3: Storage
Storing your garden tools should be the easiest part of your tool care. Before storing your tools, ensure that the area is clean and protects your tools against the elements. For any petrol machines, it is imperative that the petrol is completely drained from the unit’s carburettor and fuel tank before storing. Before storing an electrical garden machine, ensure that you first switch off the machine, then unplug it from the extension cord, and all dust must be blown out of the unit. For storing your Ryobi cordless One Plus machines like the Ryobi Cordless Brushless Chainsaw featured below (XBCS-255), remove the batteries, blow the dust out and then store in a safe area. Store the batteries indoors, in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Of course, the final suggestion is to enjoy your Ryobi garden equipment and let it work its magic in transforming your garden into a personal paradise, all set to delight and entertain in the upcoming summer months.
Essential hose care and maintenance tips
Since its establishment in 1989, Watex has solidified its position as one of South Africa’s leading hose manufacturers, offering a diverse range of precision-crafted garden hoses to cater to various needs.
Hoses play a crucial role in gardening, landscaping, and outdoor maintenance, requiring proper care to ensure longevity and optimal performance.
BY FOLLOWING THESE PRACTICES, YOU CAN MAINTAIN THE FLEXIBILITY, DURABILITY, AND READINESS OF YOUR HOSE FOR ALL YOUR OUTDOOR WATERING NEEDS:
• Avoid kinking the hose during use or storage
• Turn off the tap to stop water flow and prevent pressure build-up, rather than relying on fittings
• Do not run over the hose when it is filled with water
• Protect the hose from prolonged exposure to sunlight or hot surfaces
• Prevent freezing temperatures from
affecting the hose
• Ensure pets do not chew on the hose or fittings. Store the hose rolled up on a WATEX Hose hanger in a cool, shaded area or in a shed/garage.
Proper care and maintenance are essential for maximising the lifespan of your WATEX hose and ensuring it remains a valuable longterm investment. By handling your hose with care and providing the necessary attention, you can preserve its quality, efficiency, and functionality for years to come.
Your plants and garden will benefit from your efforts, as will your wallet.
Additionally, WATEX hoses are backed by various warranties, ranging from six and eight years to 12 years, reflecting the quality and durability of our products. Investing in the best quality hose you can afford is essential, as the material used significantly impacts the product’s wear resistance and lifespan, in addition to the care you provide.
Remember, choosing a high-quality WATEX hose and giving it proper care will ensure it serves you well for years to come.

RETAIL MATTERS
SA RETAILERS HAVE ARRIVED AT AN E-COMMERCE CROSSROAD
South Africa’s e-commerce landscape has arrived at an important juncture. The explosive growth observed during the pandemic years has slowed down somewhat and consumer spending power has faltered amid low economic growth and a global cost of living crisis. At the same time, competition is heating up.
Asian retailers such as Shein and Temu are upending segments of the e-commerce market, rapidly grabbing market share and increasing pricing pressure on traditional retailers. Amazon’s much anticipated entrance into the South African market is expected to further turn up the heat — potentially creating a new benchmark for customer experience.
Yet if we look at the experiences of other emerging markets, the disruption may only just be beginning. Barriers to entry for new players in the e-commerce channel are relatively low, creating space for more competition. It would be unsurprising, for example, for brands in segments like tech, durables, and clothing to go direct to consumer with e-commerce. This is akin to developments in the Middle East, where e-commerce strategies have introduced 55 new brands to the market. Amid all these developments, opportunities beckon. With the current economic climate and shrinking consumer wallets, the landscape is ripe for innovation and competition. Consumers are becoming increasingly
proactive and creative in their strategies to reduce costs — creating opportunities for innovative brands and retailers to expand their market share. Those that can offer convenience, competitive pricing, a wider range of products, and a personalised experience are likely to lead the charge in this rapidly evolving market.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY DEVELOPMENTS AND TRENDS TO WATCH: OMNICHANNEL JOURNEYS ON THE RISE
Our global research shows that 79% of consumer tech retail executives expect omnichannel strategies to continue to dominate. The same applies in South Africa, where a coherent omnichannel strategy is becoming a critical success factor for retailers. It’s not enough to offer customers choices such as online shopping and home delivery and buy online and pick-up in-store. Brands need to accommodate complex customer journeys where consumers may switch through different channels during discovery,
research, and purchase.
We find that many people do their research online and then buy in-store, or alternatively research in-store and then buy online — depending on price and value. Our research shows that 35% of South African shoppers agree that they use their phone in-store to help make purchasing decisions. Supporting customer choice can help retailers to maximise opportunities to acquire and retain customers. Retailers with a real-world footprint can get an advantage by making it easy for customers to switch between touchpoints. It’s now key to consider how to leverage formats like pop-up stores as well as platforms like Mr D and Uber Eats, and marketplaces such as Takealot and Amazon to expand reach.
SAVING STRATEGIES AT THE FOREFRONT
In the current economic climate, price sensitivity is one of the key factors shaping how consumers shop. Behaviours such as bulk buying when products are on sale and reducing trips to the shops to save petrol are becoming more common. Consumers are on the lookout for promotions and discounts both online and offline.
RETAIL MATTERS
Around 60% of South African consumers say they shop around different stores and online platforms to get the best balance of prices, deals and options, while nearly a third use digital technologies such as mobile apps to find better deals. Around 31% are shopping online to get better deals and save transport money. Cross-platform presence and thoughtful promotions are key to winning market share in this environment.
LONG-TERM ADVANTAGE WITH LOYALTY CARDS
With competition heating up and consumers becoming more price-conscious, retailers are looking to loyalty cards and reward programmes to improve customer retention and increase basket sizes. Some 59% of South African consumers shop with loyalty points to help manage spend.
For retailers, loyalty programme data is a goldmine of customer insight. Not only can it help them understand overall spending trends, but it can help them improve conversions and retention through personalisation. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are unlocking even more powerful insights for personalised marketing. Personalised promotion strategies are more accessible thanks to online leaflets and digital loyalty schemes. They resonate well with households that are struggling to make ends meet or with buyers that need to support larger families. We’re also seeing many innovations in loyalty — for example, towards the end of last year, Shoprite launched a monthly subscription based loyalty programme offering unlimited Checkers Sixty60 deliveries.
FINDING NEW REVENUE STREAMS
Retailers and consumer brands know that amid tough economic conditions, innovation must also include the generation of new revenue streams. This might take the form of targeting new markets — as we see with Shoprite’s OK Urban brand, an innovative cashless concept store that includes an artisanal bakery and coffee shop, or Makro’s exclusive B2B online store for businesses of all sizes.
Globally, retailers have their eye on retail media networks (RMNs), a digital equivalent to in-store ads. These allow them to sell advertising space on their websites and apps to brands. For brands, RMNs offer a new means to reach important target groups already browsing a retailer’s website or app. We are already seeing this locally as well with retail media platform Zitcha recently announcing that it is partnering with Leroy Merlin to launch a full digital retail media network across South Africa.
Another trend sees stores rent out physical space to brands. This space could be used for smart displays, kiosks, and enhanced retail experiences. As these examples show, retailers are thinking about innovative ways to maximise the value of their omnichannel presence at
a time when competition is growing, and consumer spending is under pressure.
LOGISTICS EXCELLENCE IS ESSENTIAL
Retailers will focus on operational excellence in the next two to three years. Innovative approaches will be critical in meeting the high expectations of consumers, particularly amid tough economic conditions. One of the vital elements is how quickly consumers can get hold of the products they want.
Our Consumer Intelligence shows that people worldwide are now, in general, more concerned about delivery times and product availability than before the pandemic. South African consumers will increasingly expect to receive the products when they want, with same or next-day delivery, or a specified time slot.
We’re already seeing retailers like Takealot trial one-hour delivery for tech and other goods — an expectation that is already set for last-mile delivery of groceries. Maintaining a high and consistent level of service delivery is challenging in an environment of load shedding and vast distances — but it is a basic ticket to play.
CONSUMERS IN THE DRIVING SEAT
South African retailers are at an e-commerce crossroads, where the demands placed upon them are varied and significant. Their customers expect more engaging and personalised experiences, faster delivery, and lower prices in a tough and unforgiving competitive and macroeconomic landscape.
Consumers are in the driving seat, with more choice at their fingertips than ever. For retailers, establishing a competitive edge begins with a clear understanding of the changes. They can then invest confidently and correctly in data, logistics, technology, and partnership strategies that help them meet their customers’ needs.

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
overall paint department inflation index
The May issue of DIY & Industrial Trade News showcased an analysis of retail inflation in the South African paint sector, including accessories and brushware, from February 2023 to February 2024. In this instalment of our series, Aquidneck provides an analysis of the overall performance index of the paint department and their different segments spanning from March 2023 to March 2024.
Aquidneck’s findings will be featured in a series of articles by DIY and Industrial Trade News, offering monthly updates across various hardware categories.
In a 12-month period, the price trends for different segments of the paint department have shown various changes. Based on Stats SA, an overall increase and inflation in the department has been evident and has been relatively steady. Although some segments have indicated slight declines and others having experienced slight increases in purchase, the paint department remains steady.
Price stability defines the paint department at the end of Q1. The average price (turnover divided volume) declined by -0,6% yearon-year. For context, the average inflation as per Stats SA was +5.3% whilst producer prices increased by +4.6%.
Wall paint showed slightly higher inflation numbers at +2.5% yearon-year with the 20L segment increasing by +3.2% and 5L bracket declining on average by -2.3%.
Roof paint and metal paints were outliers at the end of Q1 with the floor and roof segment prices increasing on average by +7% driven by standard roof and gutter paint without waterproofing function. Metal paint also increased above the national inflation number by +9.2% year-on-year driven by standard metal paint. Wood paint on the other hand aligns with the paint average stable at +0.6%.
The different sub-categories of wood paint display differing price trends with preservatives declining on average to 449 R or -4.3% yearon-year. Sealers are traditionally chaotic pricewise dropping by -7.2% year-on-year to 382 R whilst varnish prices shrink by a more moderate -3.2% to 331 R.
INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
The smaller wood paint segments tend to be more volatile due to low volumes and very dedicated products. Furniture wax retails on average for R238, stainer at R142, wood filler at R53 and wood oil at R181.
Within wood preservatives the top supplier includes Colortone, Dulux, Plascon and Silkseal plus an array of house brands. Dulux standard Woodgard generates almost half of its turnover above R500 price point, more extreme Rubbol generally retail above the R1000 price point defining premium. The competition (Woodseal, Woodcare or SSL Exterior) generally retails at lower price point leaving the budget segment <R300 for the house brands (unspecified in the chart).
The wood paint segment is highly competitive with many suppliers focusing on their respective niches. From a value perspective 34% of the turnover contribution is generated by wood sealers followed by varnish at 32%. Thereafter the market splits into smaller brackets with wood preservatives generating 10% of the value followed by wood oil at 8%. From a volume perspective sealers and varnish combined contribute 90% of the sales in litres simply due to their larger capacities (generally either 1L or 5L).
Wood sealer is the domain of Woodoc competing against suppliers like Anchor, Gripseal, Rystix or house brands among others. The deep Woodoc product range providing dedicated items for each specific use and price level cement their position in the market.
Wood varnish probably contains the largest number of brands with no dominating player and four suppliers having value market shares in the double digits. Additionally, house brands are very active in the varnish bracket generating 22% of the total value contribution. From a price perspective Dulux Woodgard Int/Ext controls the premium segment facing competition from Plascon Woodcare as well as Woodcare Sunproof. House brands focus on the lower price points generating most of their sales <R500.

NEWS
CEMENT
winding-down of ccsa
The Board of Cement & Concrete SA (CCSA), the industry body that has been advancing world-class quality and environmentally friendly cement as well as concrete products for the local industry, has unfortunately decided to finally close this non-profit organisation and de-register it from the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) in line with its Memorandum of Incorporation (MOI).
Since its initial establishment 86 years ago (1938) as the Concrete Association of South Africa, this industry body has transitioned and gone through numerous name changes and closures over the years. For several years, the broader construction industry has faced challenges due to a significant reduction in infrastructure investment in South Africa.
A final attempt was made in March 2021 to strengthen the various industry bodies within the sector by consolidating what was then known as The Concrete Institute (TCI) with the Concrete Society of Southern Africa (CSSA) as well as the Association of Cementitious Material Producers (ACMP) into what is now known as Cement & Concrete SA.
Having merged the industry bodies after the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, it was anticipated that running CSSA would be much more affordable. The unforeseen and continued lack of investment in infrastructure in our country unfortunately put further strain on the cement industry, hence the decision to wind-down CSSA with effect from 1 April 2024.
Whilst CSSA acknowledges the impact of its closure on several of its stakeholders, including staff, suppliers, construction companies, School of Concrete Technology students, universities and research institutions and many others, honouring commitments and executing a smooth process is a key part of our values.
It is against this context and background that we regrettably decided to cancel the muchanticipated Fulton Awards for 2024. Any fees paid for participation will be refunded to the respective entrants.
On behalf of the judging panel, we would like to extend our commendations to all entrants for submitting excellent projects for consideration. The quality and innovation demonstrated in these entries are a testament to remarkable achievements within the industry.
Among all the valued contributions made
by the industry to the citizens of this country and our African continent, one that stands out is learning and skills development opportunities that were offered by the School of Concrete Technology. This institution offered basic concrete skills as well as advance concrete technology skills that allowed individuals access to membership at the internationally recognised Institute of Concrete Technology, and significantly advanced the career opportunities for many, especially those who successfully completed their Advanced Concrete Technology Diploma. Whilst we have taken a decision to freeze any further intakes for new courses, we would like to confirm that we are considering various options to ensure that this valued institution remains accessible in some kind of form in the future.
More detailed information will be communicated on how the school is looking to accommodate and support the current group of students who wish to conclude
their courses and examinations where required. More detailed information about the school’s future will be communicated at the appropriate time.
The Board of Directors also wishes to extend its heartfelt appreciation to the current CEO, Bryan Perrie, the entire leadership team and all the loyal and competent staff members for their service to the industry and the citizens of this country during their time at CSSA. The unfortunate closure no doubt has a severe impact on those who rely on this industry body to earn a living. In line with our values and policies related to employment, all options and opportunities will first be discussed and evaluated before embarking on a section 189 retrenchment process in line with the Labour Relations Act.
We deeply regret this unavoidable inconvenience caused by the closure of CSSA and would like to assure all those impacted by this to please look out for updates on the status of the winding-down project.
Pratley’s Pratliperl boosts energy efficiency combating climate change
Pratliperl has been developed by Pratley to promote sustainability in the construction industry. “We have always been committed to sustainability and energy efficiency, especially in terms of infrastructure development and energy savings,” comments Pratley marketing director Eldon Kruger.
Pratliperl is a naturally occurring mineral aggregate for plaster and screeds that can assist contractors and developers with meeting standards such as SANS 204, which specifies the design requirements for energy efficiency in buildings. The product is a perlite-based, lightweight, thermally insulating, and fireproof cement aggregate used instead of ordinary building sand. Unlike ordinary perlites that are brittle and friable, Pratliperl has a stronger surface structure and can be used in conjunction with cement. “The end result is a unique, ecofriendly, and lightweight building material that is both fireproof and thermally-insulating,” notes Eldon. A major benefit is a reduced requirement for air conditioning, as structures can be kept naturally cool in summer and warm in winter.
Applications for Pratliperl range from plaster (internal and external thermal insulation) to lightweight floors for high-rise buildings, roof decks, fire barriers, precast mouldings, fireproofing for tunnels in mines, screeds, bathtubs, underfloor heating, tile adhesive filler, bricks and boards, pizza ovens, cryogenic tanks, loose fill, a paint texturing agent, aggregate for refractory cements and as an insulating surface for molten metal. A mere 16mm of Pratliperl plaster on each side of a wall provides the same thermal insulation as a double-brick (220-mm-thick) wall, essentially meaning that the wall’s thermal insulation is doubled. “This incredible insulation value translates into significant energy and cost savings in support of sustainability,” says Eldon. He concludes: “We at Pratley encourage energy efficiency and sustainability to protect our one and only home. The use of a product such as Pratliperl is the ideal simple step to reduce costs, save energy and ultimately unify our collective commitment to help protect the planet.”
ABRASIVES
Safety first with Grinding Techniques
With the safety of our customers a top priority, we are determined to bring the best possible abrasives to the market, manufactured to the highest safety standards at the best value for money price-point.
Conventional right-angle grinders are available in various diameter sizes ranging from 100mm up to 230mm, with the 115mm and 230mm ranking as the most popular.
Being a very powerful and useful tool, it can potentially be very dangerous if not used correctly.
Selecting both the correct size machine and abrasive product, is essential to ensure a safe operation.
If potentially trying to use a 230mm diameter machine to grind down welds on palisade fencing, the application would not only prove to be very unmanageable, but quite possibly very dangerous. The same can be said when using a disc too large for a given machine (ie using a 125mm diameter disc on a 115mm diameter machine), as it will run at a much higher speed than rated for, potentially resulting in a very dangerous operation. For easy reference, disc size diameters are clearly displayed on their labels.
Apart from selecting the correct sized disc and machine, power and speed of the angle grinder also plays a significant role. POWER refers to the measurement of input or output wattage that the machine uses (depending on the manufacturer), where SPEED on the other hand, is clarified as the rate at which the disc will turn (measured in metres per second and stated as the RPM).
Generally, the rule of thumb is that a higher power rating ensures a better performance of the abrasive product. Essential to keep in mind, is when an abrasive disc is cutting or grinding, it is putting additional load on the machine. If the machine is underpowered, the extra strain may cause a
reduction in motor speed, causing potential damage to the machine and possible underperformance of the disc
Important to note is that the maximum operating speed of a standard cutting or grinding disc is 80 metres per second (peripheral speed). Depending on the size of the disc, this will then relate back to a higher or lower RPM rating – 80m/s on a 115mm disc equates to 13 300 RPM, while 80m/s on a 230mm disc equates to 6650 RPM – matching an angle grinder only with a disc sized particularly made for that machine is considered one of the most crucial safety factors.
Another factor to consider would be the standard accessories. All angle grinders should have a safety guard fitted to the machine at all times, a handle and a retainer nut for securing the disc. Retainer nuts are available in various types for fitting the disc to the machine, including some that don’t require a spanner to fasten and loosen. Regardless of which type, make sure to avoid over tightening as these machines are designed to self-tighten on start-up, therefore requiring only tightening by hand.
Prior to starting your cutting or grinding application, discs need to be inspected for
potential damage. The periphery of the disc should be intact, not chipped or frayed and flat, not warped. Never attempt to bend or twist the disc as the fibre reinforcing will be damaged, potentially forming a dangerous crack.
Safe usage and operation pictograms are displayed on each disc label that should also present certain markings, like the OSA and EN Standard 12413 mark. These refer to the Organisation for Safety of Abrasives, and the European safety requirement Standards. Products carrying these marks, indicate a certified quality management with documented processes and internal testing facilities of the highest competence ensuring product safety for the end user.
Safety pictograms refer to required PPE during application, and material applications clearly advise the suitable material for the said abrasive.
Taking the time to choose the best abrasive, and adhering to these tips, will ensure both a safe application, and the best results.
Superflex is locally manufactured from only the best in raw materials, providing premium performance with the ultimate in product longevity. Available from major retailers.

SAMSON provides high quality cylinder locksets at affordable prices in both 6” and 8”. With different finishes your clients will have a variety to choose from to suit every need.
CYLINDER LOCK OPTIONS
Single cylinder VS double cylinder locks. The cylinder is the locking mechanism of an entry door set. It may be integrated with a deadbolt of a mortise lock or mounted independently as part of a separate deadbolt. There are two types of cylinder locks commonly used for residential applications. A ‘single’ cylinder lock is
operated from the outside with a key, and from inside with a thumb-turn. One can secure the door from inside, as well as exit the house without a key, making this the most popular option. A ‘double’ cylinder lock is operated with a key from both inside and outside. While such locks provide added security for doors with glass panels or sidelights, they prevent egress without a key.
Although all SAMSON cylinder locksets come prepacked with a double cylinder mechanism, they also offer a thumb turn lock for separate purchase.
