HOW IT ALL WORKS Barrows design, manufacture and install PolyAl displays at zero-cost to the retailer. The core units are asset tracked and Barrows takes responsibility for the maintenance of the units, which are uplifted and recycled into new displays at the end of 24 months. Brands book space in-store with the retailer and rent the displays from Barrows on a monthly basis. The rental includes cladding design, distribution and installation, and all previous campaign cladding is recycled. Due to a closed-loop supply chain, Barrows ensures a hassle-free, fast and high quality brand activation with zero waste to landfill – leaving brands the time to do what they do best. similar deals in the future, notes Rachman. “Arranging such a large order from the factory took some well-prepared negotiating with both the customer and the OEM, as well as having the units dispatched timeously within a confined time,” he comments on the challenges. “Our Bobcat skidsteer loaders feature excellent performance, with a compact body size and power to easily operate in confined spaces. This is due to the fact that, being a vertical lift machine, the load remains closer to the loader throughout the lift path. Bobcat has concluded a contract to supply 25 Bobcat skidsteer loaders to major DIY and building materials supplier.
“We believe our vertical path skid loader was the best option based on the client’s requirements and needs, in addition to its low running costs, not to mention the extra lift height and bucket capacity resulting in quicker cycle times for both the client and its customers,” highlights Rachman. Advantages include low maintenance, increased lift for loading six and ten cube trucks, minimal electronics, a larger bucket capacity and a longer wheelbase for better machine stability. “We will embark on an operator training programme for each branch nationally. We have also set up a dedicated call centre at our Boksburg office to handle all enquiries relating to service, parts and breakdowns to ensure minimal downtime for the client, with a rapid response team on call seven days a week,” concludes Rachman.

alternative. If you opt for Tungsten carbide burrs or abrasive mounted points, you’ll have finer control when finishing small welded areas especially when working in difficult to reach areas. However, it needs to be noted that these products operate at higher speeds and will require a die-or-pencil grinder as they do not work on a hand-held drill. Specialist abrasive products like dual purpose cut-and-grind discs are also available making both cutting and grinding applications possible with one product. When making use of coated products to blend welds, depending on the thickness and size, care should be taken to start with the finest possible grain if a good surface condition is required. The next coarsest grain should be selected only if the stock removal rate is insufficient. This reduces the steps in achieving the desired finish. When it comes to the decision of what finish would be best, one needs to consider the base type material used and determine if the welds need to be removed. In some cases where the welds are not visible or being painted, they need not be removed.

All we need is an enabling environment to be able to unlock all of this.” In response to this, Pratley has reactivated a number of projects in progress prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequently put on hold due to the lockdown, which has seen the company embark on a recruitment drive. “We have actually employed additional people during this time due to our growth plans,” highlights Kim. The manufacturer’s short-term goal is to bring to market a number of products in its R&D pipeline, including its electrical and minerals divisions. “We are also commissioning a major new production facility for our adhesives,” reveals Kim. A longer-term goal is to tackle export markets much more aggressively. “We are looking to add completely new businesses into our mix. We actually have a huge product range that lends itself to many more markets and applications, and hence our focus on differentiation,” he concludes.

FROM BREAD TO BRICKS
GET IT ALL AT KIT KAT
I
n 1953, Osman Gani, grandfather of the current generation Gani’s at the helm of the Kit Kat Group, along with his brother-in-law Osman Mohammed, started Kit Kat Café — a small corner shop in the old Asiatic Bazaar of Pretoria.
Nabeel explains, “At the time, my father (AR Gani) worked for Simba Chips where he was a delivery truck driver and that is where he learned about systems, stock management and the various processes a company needs to follow to trade successfully”.
Little did they know that seven decades later, Kit Kat Group would be a leading brand of South Africa’s FMCG industry.
The two brothers had built up enough capital, knowledge and courage to open their bigger Kit Kat Super Wholesale. But it did not take long before they would have to expand again and in 1987 Kit Kat Super Hyper opened its doors.
Origin of the name Kit Kat We paid Kit Kat head office a visit to sit down and hear their story. First, Nabeel Gani, the grandson of Osman Gani, and COO of Kit Kat Group explains the origin of their company name, “Kit Kat is a rare American bird and my late grandfather’s brother-in-law, the man who had the vision for the business, was nicknamed ‘Kit Kat’. People called him that because he was different (rare) in the sense that although being blind, he still managed to achieve extraordinary feats,” says Nabeel. Early Kit Kat stores Even though it faced many challenges, Kit Kat Café successfully traded for many years. In 1983, the Gani legacy forged ahead when Osman Gani’s two sons, Abdul Kader and Abdul Razak entered the business and turned the café into Kit Kat Super Market.
Even this was short-lived because 5 years later they moved to even bigger premises and in 1992 the first Kit Kat Cash & Carry opened its doors. In 1999, Kit Kat Cash & Carry once again had to relocate to bigger premises and since then they have opened many more stores. Kit Kat Group currently includes four Cash ‘n Carry stores, four clothing outlets, 23 Express stores, and four hardware outlets trading under Kit Kat Buildmart located at their Kliptown, Benoni, Silverton and Pretoria West Cash and Carry stores. But before opening new stores, Kit Kat Group first built a 17 000m2 Distribution Centre to streamline the process of opening new stores.
Kit Kat Buildmart stocks EUREKA’s complete range of fasteners and anchors as well as the range of EUREKA Drill Bits, EUREKA MustHaves, Fort Knox Locks and the poplular CHAMP Lock
“With the DC in place we can now just open new stores and we don’t have to worry about whether we have a big enough warehouse to store stock,” says Nabeel. Kit Kat have plans for 5 new big box Cash & Carry stores as well as a host of new Express stores. Store that sells groceries, electronics, hardware and plumbing Their objective is to be a one-stop-shop, “And that is why we sell everything from bread to bricks,” says Nabeel. When people need groceries, want to buy a new TV or even have a tap that needs replacing, Kit Kat is the store they visit. “And we are a company for the people — we don’t charge what other retailers charge simply because it’s the norm — our products are priced fairly. In fact, when we have our promotions, we cut our prices even further and make it even more affordable,” says Nabeel. Kit Kat Group believes in either doing something properly or not doing it at all. A philosophy they took forward into the hardware part of their business as the Cash & Carry stores don’t merely have an aisle or two for hardware. Launched in 2004, Kit Kat Buildmart is a fully-fledged hardware store “We went into the hardware business holistically because you can help more customers, says Nabeel”.
Kit Kat Buildmart stocks an A-Z of building materials, paints and DIY products. Nabeel explains that people come in for one thing and then be reminded of something else they need but they didn’t realise it at first. And this can only happen when you have a wide range and the offering is properly executed. “Take the EUREKA range, for example, the numbers we do with your complete range compared to when we only had a few stands — the difference is chalk and cheese,” says Nabeel. Nabeel states that consumers trust well-known brands and because they trust Kit Kat, they need to be able to trust the brands Kit Kat stock. “We have a responsibility to make sure our suppliers’ products are of good quality because if something goes wrong, the customer comes back to us. By having a trusted brand like EUREKA in our business, consumers have the peace of mind because we have done the homework on their behalf,” explains Nabeel. EUREKA DIY would like to thank Kit Kat Group for their continued support — we look forward to future store openings where we can strengthen our partnership even further.
Kit Kat Group built a 17 000m2 under roof Distribution Centre to ensure they have ample space to warehouse stock — it can hold up to 23 000 pallets. A strategic move which allows them to open new stores, knowing that the logistics of getting stock to the new store is within their control
