T
he abrasive grain is one of the key components of the abrasive product that produces the cutting action that provides the finish of your workpiece
or work surface. Determining the specific application and desired outcome of your project is of utmost importance. Establishing whether the job requires little or heavy stock removal, shaping, blending or polishing will provide a good indication of the required grain type. Surface finish is measured in R.A - abbreviated ‘roughness average’ of a surface and it is measured microscopically. A coarser grit is typically used for stock removal and will produce a rough finish. A finer grit, however, produces a smoother finish and is typically used for finishing or blending. When it comes to grain choice, and available options within the market, it is important to understand the various characteristics and advantages of each abrasive grain type and its best suited application. Abrasive grains main characteristic is to break away under heat or pressure thereby continuously exposing new sharp cutting edges for the entire lifetime of the product. Coated abrasive products are manufactured from four main grain types – Silicon Carbide, Aluminium Oxide, Ceramic Alumina and Alumina- Zirconia. Each displaying their own unique advantages. Brown Aluminium Oxide is the most common and general coated abrasive grain in the market that covers a vast range of applications and finishes.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF DEDICATION! Imagine a hardware store with general goods, toys, coffins, firearms, and ammunition as part of their product offering. BUCO Brits started out that way 100 years ago. From a small general dealer next to the railway line in 1921, this store has grown with the community to become the successful large store it is today. Proud of the rich and long heritage, Jaco Van Der Colff and Maik Fenner manage this gem with the same passion and dedication as the founding members set out one century ago. THE STORE’S DNA Jaco proudly shares, “The culture of the business has always been one of care and community involvement, it is part of our DNA.” The principle of paying it forward is now thought to be the reason for their success
and the trust they’ve earned with the community of Brits. Client service is also a top priority. “Listening to our customers and meeting their needs are really important to us”, Maik states. For Jaco and Maik their passion does not only extend to people. Nature and in particular animal welfare is also close to their hearts. They have committed themselves to the conservation of the African Wild Dog for the next three years.
