Loryma: Authentic Low-Fat Plant-Based Alternatives
In the food industry, there are many reasons to replace animal fats with plant-based alternatives, be it to replicate meat products or provide hybrid offerings with an optimized label. Ingredients specialist Loryma supports manufacturers with wheat-based solutions that promise top-quality characteristics. They imitate animal fats that perfectly replicate the originals in terms of texture and processing properties. Wheat-based stabilizers, starches and clean label compounds, meanwhile, enable manufacturers to create melt-in-themouth or stable, sliceable textures. They
also improve the appearance and sensory properties of products such as juicy poultry sausage, mouthwatering vegan salami pizza or crispy plant-based chorizo. Consumer demand for plant-based, health-conscious yet tasty convenience products continue unabated. However, plant-based fats do not always behave like their animal-based counterparts when it comes to production and preparation. Here, manufacturers face several challenges: Meat analogs, meat products or hybrids should have an authentic texture and sensory appeal and convince with a low - fat content
and short, natural ingredient list. Loryma has developed three innovative solutions that support targeted fat reproduction, all with a low-calorie content.

Brazil poultry disease outbreaks highlight need for policy reforms in South Africa
In the wake of recent outbreaks of bird flu and Newcastle disease in Brazil, leading importer and food distributor Hume International has called for urgent policy reforms and greater consistency from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD).
Brazil has detected two new outbreaks of avian flu among wild birds in Paraná in recent weeks, as well as the presence of Newcastle disease at a commercial farm in Rio Grande do Sul.
As a result, Fred Hume, CEO of Hume International, has raised concerns about the potential impact of any further outbreaks on South Africa's poultry imports and food supply chains. Brazil is the country’s largest poultry supplier, accounting for as much as

While some regions are only just discovering cider as a trend beverage, in other countries this fermented, alcoholic apple juice looks back on a long tradition. In Great Britain and Ireland especially, this specialty has been extremely popular since the time of Julius Caesar. On his retreat from the land of the Anglo-Saxons the imperator took the refreshing potable back to Rome with him and was subsequently responsible for its distribution to many parts of Europe. Cider thus developed lots of different regional variations: the French, for example, took sweet dessert apples as the main ingredient and used them to make weak alcoholic cidre. The English, on the other hand, preferred cider apples that were too bitter, sharp or sour to be eaten without further
processing. When it comes to the tart dryness of the beverage, Germany wins hands down: in the federal state of Hesse in particular a veritable Ebbelwoi or ‘apple wine’ culture has grown up around a cider that contains 5–8% alcohol by volume and in 2022 was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In our modern era it was the Brits who again precipitated the beverage’s march of triumph around the globe, however; in the 19th and 20th centuries cider spread from England throughout the British Empire to its most remote colonies and the later Commonwealth – to India, Canada, Australia and South Africa, where it’s now one of the country’s most popular thirst-quenchers.
80% of all imported chicken.
“Unfortunately, South Africa has some of the most draconian policies in the world, which are out of touch with global norms and standards. In terms of our local policies, this often means placing a nationwide ban on all poultry imports from countries where bird flu may have been detected,” he notes. By contrast, in the case of Newcastle disease, regulations state that imports are not allowed from within a 10-kilometre radius of affected facilities. However, the exact details and implementation of these regulations remain unclear, creating an environment of uncertainty for importers and other key businesses within the food industry.

The market leader in South Africa is Distell, one of the premier beverage producers on the entire continent and, according to the company, the second-largest cider producer worldwide. Formed at the end of 2000 when Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery merged with the Distillers Corporation, the group makes wine, spirits, cider and RTDs. The last two categories alone made up around 55% of the quantities of beverage produced in 2021.

NRCS Marks World Food Safety Day
National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) joined the global community in commemorating World Food Safety Day (WFSD). This annual observance serves as a critical reminder of the importance of transforming our food systems to ensure better health outcomes and prevent foodborne diseases, such as Listeriosis.
The theme for this year's WFSD, "Food safety: prepare for the unexpected," underscores the need for vigilance and proactive measures in safeguarding our food supply value chain.
Food safety is not merely a regulatory requirement but a fundamental component of public health. The NRCS’s participation in WFSD highlights a collective effort to reduce the global burden of foodborne illnesses.
By fostering awareness and promoting preventive strategies, we can mitigate the risks associated with foodborne health hazards. The NRCS’s inspection-at-source strategy within its regulatory framework is pivotal in this endeavour, ensuring that food safety measures are ingrained at every stage of the food production process.
Despite the best efforts of regulators, manufacturers, and food business operators, unforeseen circumstances can lead to lapses in food safety controls. Therefore, it is imperative that all parties recognise their shared responsibility in maintaining the integrity of our food systems.
PROACTIVE MEASURES AND INSPECTIONS
Central to this shared responsibility is the NRCS’s mandate which compel manufacturers and food business operators to promptly report any non-conformance related to food safety. This regulatory framework ensures that issues are addressed swiftly and effectively, preventing potentially hazardous products from reaching consumers.
One of the key components of the NRCS’s strategy is the deployment of resident inspectors at facilities producing regulated commodities, such as fishery products, canned fish, and processed meat. These inspectors conduct proactive inspections
“The theme for this year's WFSD, "Food safety: prepare for the unexpected," underscores the need for vigilance and proactive measures in safeguarding our food supply value chain. ”
at critical points in the production process, guided by International Food Safety Management Guidelines. This approach emphasizes the responsibility of Food Business Operators to implement and maintain robust Food Safety Management Systems that identify, evaluate, and control significant food safety hazards.
The recent voluntary product recall of canned molluscs due to detected defects exemplifies the effectiveness of this preventative strategy. By identifying and addressing issues at the source, the NRCS ensures that unsafe products are removed from the supply chain before they can harm consumers.
COLLABORATION AND CONSUMER AWARENESS
Collaboration is a cornerstone of the NRCS’s approach to food safety. The Regulator works closely with relevant stakeholders, including the Department of Health (DoH), the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), and the National Consumer Commission (NCC).
These partnerships are crucial in managing food safety incidents and facilitating product
recalls when necessary. By aligning their efforts, these regulatory bodies ensure that food safety measures are consistently applied across the country, protecting consumers and promoting fair trade practices.
However, the responsibility for food safety extends beyond regulators and manufacturers, consumers also play a vital role in ensuring that the food they consume is safe. By staying informed about food safety practices and being vigilant about the products they purchase, consumers can help prevent foodborne illnesses. The WFSD is an opportunity to raise awareness to consumers about their role in the food safety space.
As we commemorate World Food Safety Day 2024, let us reaffirm our commitment to this crucial cause. The theme, "Food safety: prepare for the unexpected," reminds us that vigilance and preparedness are essential in safeguarding our food supply. By working together and adhering to rigorous food safety standards, we can create a safer, healthier future for all.
In conclusion, the NRCS’s dedication to food safety, through its comprehensive regulatory framework and collaborative efforts, plays a pivotal role in protecting public health. On this World Food Safety Day, let us all join forces to practice food safety etiquettes, ensuring that our food systems are resilient and capable of withstanding unexpected challenges.

Skanem Opens New Plant
Skanem, a leading multinational label provider, has inaugurated a new labelling factory in Dar es Salaam.
The company’s goal is to deliver enhanced services to its customers and expand into new markets throughout the region.
This new facility is a smaller counterpart to Skanem’s existing operations in Kenya, primarily designed to boost production volume, capacity, and lead times.
Skanem Africa aims to establish a local manufacturing presence to better serve its existing customer base and attract new clients.
Initially, the facility will operate with a single, state-of-the-art printing press capable of producing various labels for the Flexo industry, including Self-Adhesive Labels (PSL), BOPP Wrap Around Labels, and Shrink Sleeves.
These printing capabilities will enhance label production and meet the diverse needs of businesses in Tanzania and beyond, ensuring high-quality labelling solutions.

Enhance your chewie fruit gummies
By combining pectin with gelatin, manufacturers can achieve an optimal texture of traditional gelatin-based gums while benefiting from the stabilising properties of pectin.
Fruit gummies have carved out a unique place in the confectionery world, captivating consumers with their chewy texture and delicious flavours. Recently, these popular treats have evolved beyond simple indulgence to become a vehicle for nutritional supplements, including essential vitamins and minerals. Traditionally, gelatin has been the gelling agent of choice for fruit gummies. However, the growing demand for vegetarian-friendly and health-conscious foods has prompted a shift to pectin, a plant-based gelling agent. Pectin is not only in line with healthconscious trends, but also offers technical and sensory benefits, especially when used in combination with gelatin.
PECTIN IN MODERN CONFECTIONERY
Pectin is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the cell walls of fruits, especially citrus fruits and apples. It has been used in the food industry for decades, primarily in the production of jams and jellies due to its gelling properties. In the context of fruit gums, pectin is an optimal solution for several reasons:
Vegetarian-friendly alternative: As a plant-based ingredient, pectin is ideal for creating vegetarian or vegan gummies, appealing to a growing segment of healthconscious consumers who avoid products of animal origin.
Improved thermal stability: A key benefit of pectin is its ability to withstand higher

temperatures. By replacing a portion of the gelatin with pectin, fruit gummies can be produced with improved tolerance to high temperatures, simplifying the manufacturing process.
Improved storage stability: Pectin's higher melting point compared to gelatin ensures that fruit gummies maintain their shape and texture even in warmer climates or during extended storage.
Reduced molding time: Pectin sets faster than gelatin, reducing the time it takes for gummies to form in molds. This allows for faster turnaround times and increases manufacturing efficiency.
FLEXIBLE COMBINATION OR OPTIMAL FRUIT GUM TEXTURE AND STABILITY
The combination of pectin and gelatin offers the best of both worlds. While gelatin provides desirable chewiness and clarity, pectin adds firmness and improves overall texture. This flexibility allows manufacturers to fine-tune the texture and mouthfeel of fruit gums to meet specific consumer preferences.
The use of pectin is not only in line with current health and nutrition trends, but also provides a robust technical solution that
improves the overall production and quality of fruit gummies. In fact, this plant-based gelling agent is the optimal solution for creating delicious, stable and consumerfriendly chewy treats.

Label applicator world premiere at Fachpack
HERMA introduces the eco applicator, a costeffective, high-quality labelling solution debuting at FACHPACK. It offers advanced integration, flexibility, and future-proof features, ensuring durability and investment security.
HERMA is now redefining the benchmark for cost-effective entry into cutting-edge labeling technology: The HERMA eco applicator is designed for a diverse range of standard applications and will make its world debut at FACHPACK (Hall 3C, Stand 322). It combines outstanding cost-effectiveness and high quality with a level of engineering and manufacturing quality which is unusually high for this market segment. "This means value retention, durability and investment security, even in the entry-level segment. After all, the HERMA eco is produced on the same production line in Filderstadt, Germany, as the high-performance HERMA 500 – and therefore carries within it genuine HERMA DNA," emphasizes Martin Kühl, Head of the Labeling Machines division. Costing the same as the predecessor model HERMA basic, the HERMA eco boasts a multitude of new features. Integration of the new HERMA eco into a packaging system and therefore into a higher-level control system (PLC) is now as extensive and convenient as never before in this HERMA performance class.
HERMA ECO
This is made possible by, among other things, a series of additional I/O signals. In conjunction with the system control unit, these signals enable, for example, the automatic power on/power off function, separate starting of the labeling process as well as manual label dispensing, which is an advantage especially when setting up an applicator. Thanks to these signals, end-of-reel checking is now also possible. Furthermore, the printer and the peel system will in future each have their

own connections that can be monitored separately. As a result, it will be possible to use, for example, a printer in combination with a pneumatic transfer unit, which will significantly expand the flexibility and possible applications of the new HERMA eco. The HERMA eco is therefore well prepared even for simple pharmaceutical or healthcare systems, not least because it has a master encoder function. This function enables continuous and automatic synchronization with the speed of the conveyor belt. It ensures precision, even at the maximum speed of up to 30 meters per minute for

labels with a width of up to 160 millimeters. The newly designed winders and unwinders also contribute to accuracy, thanks to the reduced inert mass. The empty backing paper is removed from the winder quickly and easily by pulling an expanding mandrel off the winding core.
FUTURE UPDATES VIA USB INTERFACE
No changes have been made to the triedand-tested, easy-to-use menu structure with its single operating level. The three operating keys are, however, much larger than on the predecessor model, which improves comfort, especially in difficult environments. Furthermore, the HERMA eco can be updated via a USB interface – this also contributes to investment security and makes the applicator future-proof. The plugs and connecting cables of the HERMA eco are the same as those of the high-performance HERMA 500. Anyone using both models can significantly reduce the storage space required for spare parts.
Individual configuration online: In the HERMA online configurator, which is unique in the industry, the HERMA eco can be adapted even more easily to specific requirements, particularly by mechanical engineers. This applies to, for example, the choice of clearance, installation of a dispensing and peel system or use of the horizontal HERMA eco variant. The possibility of pre-configuring applicators individually can save time and money because design modifications on the customer's premises may then no longer be necessary.
Reliable when things get hot
High-performance laminates require a high level of product knowledge and experience in order to maintain the necessary bond strength over the long shelf life of the packaged products
Food safety is crucial, especially for long-shelf-life products like olives, sauerkraut, soups, and tomato passata. With decades of experience, the adapa Group provides reliable packaging solutions for these demanding applications.
The Italian site adapa Italy Forlì is characterised by the combination of a broad, high-performance portfolio and the experience to use it according to its strengths. Specialising in small and mediumsized companies, the adapa Group site offers retort packaging solutions in flexographic and gravure printing.
Maximising durability - reliable and reproducible: Due to the long shelf life of the products to be packaged, the packaging must perform for months - and at the same time withstand a real stress test at the beginning: Core temperatures of over 121°C, sometimes for hours, and often packaged goods with aggressive, acidic properties such as sauerkraut or chestnuts place the highest demands. At the same time, the long shelf life reduces the flexibility during packaging changes: Having to cancel storage tests after months can set projects back a long way. adapa's experience in the field of retort packaging is therefore particularly valuable here and can save food manufacturers a lot of time and money.
TUNED FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE
adapa has an established portfolio of highperformance laminates for demanding hot applications and therefore offers resilient
packaging solutions for a wide range of products. Whether stand-up pouches, flowpacks, sachets or top films, the films are customised according to the application. The film thicknesses are between 76 and 185 µm and are designed as duplex, triplex or even quadruplex laminates with either solvent-free or solvent-based lamination for maximum performance. PE and PP are available as sealing layers. To ensure successful implementation, the Group's technical application service provides valuable support: on request, packaging launches can also be accompanied by experienced technicians in order to complete packaging changeovers to the full satisfaction of the customer.

Perfect Equation for Premium Chocolate Packaging
Brand maintenance plus high flexibility – not just now, but in the future too as modular secondary packaging technology surpasses manual capabilities.
Premium chocolates require premium packaging and, as a direct result, premium packaging demands highly capable, but very gentle premium packaging technology.
Highly capable and gentle are just two features of the packaging machines, cells and turnkey lines supplied by global packaging expert Cama Group. High speed, compact, modern technology, flexibility, agility and fully digital complete the picture. As a result, Cama’s technologies see deployment around the world, from the biggest blue-chip multinational, down to the smallest, boutique, local specialist.
One recent beneficiary of Cama’s extensive domain expertise is the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, an American

confectioner, wholly owned by Swiss confectioner Lindt & Sprüngli. The company set a challenge to Cama to develop a secondary packaging process that would ably replace the existing manual process in terms of dexterity, accuracy, and delicacy.
According to Davide Di Lorenzo, sales engineer manager at Cama Group: “The products being packaged comprised flow packed chocolate squares and seasonally branded flow packed chocolate rectangles. This product-mix challenge is compounded by the design of the secondary packaging, which is a small gable-topped box, into which the products are placed in pairs at a rate of 260 packaged per minute. As well as its diminutive dimensions and slightly irregular shape, the packaging is also very Images: Supplied by Cama
aesthetic – promoting the expected quality of the product inside, as a result, gentle, abrasion-fee handling was essential.”
The first step in the packaging process involves defining the orientation of the packed chocolates to ensure optimum placement into the servo-driven flighted conveyor within the IT280 loading unit, although the technology is tolerant of minimally skewed packages. Once oriented, each product is placed into its own separate pocket or flight, after which a pre-set train of products is created.
This train is then picked by a triaflex robot – specially developed in house by Cama, specifically for packaging processes – and the products are placed into individual cartons phased on a parallel conveyor. After loading, the cartons are transferred to the flap-folding station, where the top and bottom flaps are closed and secured using hot-melt, before being conveyed to the machine’s outfeed. The completed packages are then feed into an CL 156 electronic continuous motion cartoning machine.
“Although this sounds like a relatively straightforward packaging operation,” Di Lorenzo explains, “there were a number of immediate hurdles to overcome, including the size and design of the box, both of which required bespoke tooling modifications of our standard solution. In terms of product size and variety we designed a racetrack that can take all chocolate shapes – either short edge leading or at 90°, in fact the pockets are specifically designed to receive both orientations so there would be no need for downtime between batches.
FLEXIBLE PACKAGING

“And these were just the current challenges. With one eye on the future, the customer also wanted us to factor in higherproduct-count capabilities – all on the same machines – which would see five or six products loaded instead of the existing pair. For this challenge, our packaging design consultancy team got to work and proposed new designs and dimensions that would fit the higher product count, as well as addressing sustainability in its use of less material.
“To cater for the higher throughput, we exploited the modular capabilities
Cama was founded in 1981 and has operations in eight countries, delivered more than 3, 000 machines worldwide.
of the IT280, which allows us to add a second infeed and second robot – taking throughput up to 400 (2 x 200) products per minute. The cartoner is already capable of this level of operation. These expanded capabilities will be demonstrated during testing and FAT.”
Di Lorenzo concludes. “Modularity, flexibility and minimal downtime are pre-
requisites of many of our customers, as they witness the new technologies and capabilities available to them on the wider market. Why do they always come to us? It’s because we have the reputation, skills and broad multi domain expertise to conquer the most difficult packaging challenges with modular technologies that will grow as they grow. Add our packaging design consultancy, extensive global & local support and AR and VR capabilities into the mix and it’s easy to see why we get so much repeat business from some of the world’s biggest brands.”

Egypt increases wheat and flour costs
The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has raised the price of local and imported wheat for subsidised bread.
Additionally, flour prices supplied to local bakeries have surged to LE 16,000 (US$645) per ton, effective from the beginning of August. This represents a 35 percent increase from the previous price of LE 11,800 (US$460) per ton.
Despite these adjustments, the cost of subsidized local bread will remain unchanged for consumers.
According to an official source cited by Asharq Bloomberg, the government will absorb the additional expenses, equating to 20 piasters (US$0.02) on the ration support card.
As the world’s largest wheat importer, Egypt provides subsidised bread to over 70 million residents through an extensive food
subsidy program.
Earlier in May, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that Egypt raised the subsidised bread price from 5 piasters to 20 piasters, marking the first increase in 30 years. He also noted that the government’s cost for each loaf of bread stands at 125 piasters (US$0.12).
He acknowledged the move would be unpopular but emphasized the need to “rationalize the burden on the state treasury to ensure the sustainability of subsidies.”
The bread subsidy programme costs the Egyptian government nearly US$3 billion each year or approximately 60% of total expenditure on food subsidies.
Notably, Egypt produces a staggering 250 to 275 million loaves of bread daily through the existing subsidised bread system.
According to data from the Ministry of Supply, the real cost of producing a loaf of bread has risen to 1.25 pounds (US$0.026) from 1.15 pounds (US$0.024) a year earlier.
This has put too much pressure on the treasury, given that, recently, the government revised its bread subsidy policy, allowing the selling of discounted bread to citizens not enrolled in its ration card programme through designated prepaid cards.
