A world of antioxidant solutions at your fingertips
Vitablend offers a comprehensive and innovative range of cost-effective, natural and synthetic systems for the prevention and delay of oxidation. Maryke Foulds looks at what is on offer from SK Chemtrade.
Oxidation in meat products can lead to poor taste, off flavour development and loss of colour
These additives are available in either dry or liquid formats and formulated with three essential components: active, which is an antioxidant active or botanical extract active; chelator, also known as a sequestrant; and the carrier.
Chemical activity can delay the oxidation process to ensure a longer shelf life while maintaining the quality of the food or feed product. For easy reference, these products are divided into four classes, as seen in the table below.
Chelators prevent metal ions from becoming pro-oxidative. This is achieved by the addition of chelators such as citric acid and its esters. The right choice of carrier (according to suitability and regulations) can ensure the homogeneity of the liquid or powder system and its application compatibility. The correct use of carriers ensures ease of dosing of liquids by pumps (for example to pet meal) and also enhances the antioxidative effect by ensuring close contact of the chosen antioxidant to the substrate. Typical carrier systems employed by Vitablend: • Vegetable oils (sunflower or rapeseed oil) • Lecithin (sunflower and soy origin) • Propylene glycol (food and pet food,
excluding cat food) • Polyethylene glycol (cosmetics and industrial applications and pet food) • Other emulsifiers, for example diacetyl tartaric acid, mono and diglyceride esters, silica, carbonates and other carriers for feed and dry compounds.
SYNTHETIC ANTIOXIDANT SYSTEMS
The traditional use of phenolic synthetic antioxidants offers a powerful, responsive and cost-effective way to improve the shelf life of food and feed systems. Vitablend offers a wide range of systems, whether bespoke or from a selection of those widely in use. Blends in liquid or powder form are based on wellknown, tried and tested traditional synthetics such as BHA, BHT, TBHQ, propyl gallate and ascorbyl palmitate. These are offered together with or without sequestrants and synergists.
In liquid form, the chosen carrier is typically vegetable oil, and in powder formats, it is offered either in a spray-dried or as an adsorbates format.

without rosemary, green tea and other natural phenolics. Tocoblend is offered in an oilsoluble liquid format as well as water- and oil-dispersible powder format. These natural antioxidants are rich in gamma and delta homologues of tocopherol and as a natural extract of vitamin E, demonstrating a high antioxidant capacity.
• Rosal-OX and Rosal-PET series A wide range of oil- and water-soluble natural rosemary extracts. Offered as a stand-alone liquid or as powders or in combination with natural, mixed tocopherols for enhanced synergistic capability.
• Phyt-OX series Exploring the capability of botanical extracts to answer the call for naturalness has led to the creation of a series of products suitable for food and feed. A range of E-number-free natural systems for use in oils and waterbased applications. Supplied in powder or liquid formats.
ANTIOXIDANTS FOR MEAT APPLICATIONS
Oxidation in meat products can lead to poor taste, off flavour development and loss of colour. Vitablend antioxidant systems for meat products offer a dedicated range of natural and traditional phenolic-based antioxidants to protect meat products from the effects of oxidations. All these products for meat applications are designed to prevent oxidation, retain the pink colour of the meat and improve flavour stability.
PREMIX OVERVIEW
A full range of nutrient premixes for beverages, bakery and general food and supplement applications are also available.
• NRV Nutrient Reference Values are the recommended daily nutritional intake of vitamins and minerals based on currently available scientific knowledge. They give the daily intake of essential nutrients generally considered to be required by healthy humans to meet their known nutritional needs for the prevention of deficiencies, i.e. the amount of vitamins and minerals you need to be consuming daily to prevent becoming ill. antioxidants, protecting muscle cells from free radical damage and enhancing recovery and growth. Vitamin C is also involved in connective tissue formation and helps in the absorption of iron. Vitamin B2 and copper play a proven role in the prevention of oxidation of protein, fast and DNA within the cell.

• B vitamins This class of water-soluble vitamins play an important role in cell metabolism. Though these vitamins share similar names, they are chemically distinct compounds that often co-exist in the same food. In general, dietary supplements containing all eight are referred to as a vitamin B complex. B vitamins are found in high quantities in meat. Other good sources include legumes, whole grains, potatoes, bananas, chilli peppers, tempeh, nutritional yeast, brewer’s yeast and molasses.
• Claims All premixes in the portfolio are formulated on Commission Regulation (EU) 432/2012. As a rule, 15% of the NRV supplied by 100g or 100ml or per package if the package contains only a single portion, should be taken into consideration in deciding what constitutes a significant amount. For beverages, this is 7.5% of the NRV.
