As the condition monitoring partner of Zambia Sugar, WearCheck Zimbabwe analysed the cost saving benefit for the sugar producer over the 2016-2017 harvesting season. MANY POSITIVES • the overall maintenance cost saving was about R2.7 million • dust contamination was reduced from 11 percent to three percent • water contamination improved a further two percent • the life of cane loader hydraulic oil was extended by three times the norm, which boosts environmental objectives
Goals included: • monthly sampling compliance • findings for the season (percentage alarms per vehicle type with problematic samples) • corrective action and feedback Once cost savings were assessed, recommendations were made for the next agricultural season.
INTERESTING TRENDS MEASURABLE GOALS Measurable goals were set by WearCheck at the start of the season and were monitored by regular interaction between WearCheck and Zambia Sugar.
Interesting trends emerged including: the severe effect on the tractor axles of wet weather and mud, which led to contamination of the components and failure.
SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS Thanks to the partnership, significant improvements were noted in Zambia Sugar’s operation such as reduced downtime, improved machinery operating output and large maintenance cost savings.
IMPROVED MAINTENANCE CULTURE There is now an improved maintenance culture. For example, the team is now more aware of the operating environment on equipment and also how operational problems affect equipment. Nipping minor problems in the bud helps to avoid catastrophic failures.
