his year has just flown by. I can barely believe we’ll soon be saying hello to 2019, yet I’m also excited at the prospect. The manufacturing industry has a lot to be excited about in the coming year, since it will mark the first ever Local Manufacturing Expo coming in May 2019. The building and construction industry can say goodbye to years of sluggish growth .za yer.co

as 2019 has a lot more positive prospects on the horizon with much more foreign investment predicted. Mining has also had a tough few years but with Mining Charter III being finalised in September this year, the road ahead is a lot clearer and is one of compromise. On the last rung of 2018’s ladder and looking to the years ahead, in this edition of Industrial Buyer we look at how the industry is changing and adapting. We focus on companies that are embracing concepts like sustainability, digitisation and skills development in our news section on page 6. Read a great feel-good story about how Sika upgraded the flooring at a municipal police station on page 27 and find out why water-based paints are shifting the landscape of industrial coatings on page 28. From the team at Industrial Buyer we wish you a wonderful festive season and look forward to bringing you even more great news and information about the manufacturing, construction, engineering and mining sectors in 2019. NEWS HYUNDAI AND CUMMINS DEVELOP ELECTRIC POWERED MINI EXCAVATOR Cummins Inc. and Hyundai Construction Equipment have jointly developed an electric powered mini excavator. ‘As electric vehicles continue to expand their share in the automotive market, we are simultaneously seeing the electrification of commercial power systems being pursued by many as both an environmentally friendly and economically sustainable solution for construction equipment,’ says D. S. Kim, HCE senior executive vice president and CTO. ‘HCE anticipates mini excavators, which operate in urban workplaces close to residential areas, will be a prime candidate to electrify to meet zero-emission and low noise requirements in the near future.’ Based on the long-term productive partnership of the companies, HCE and Cummins agreed to collaborate on the design and development of electric powered mini excavators for this market. Powered by Cummins *BM4.4E flexible battery modules (4.4 kWh each), the 3.5-ton excavator is designed to operate for a full eight-hour shift and charge in under three hours. The machine eliminates all gaseous emissions and substantially reduces noise, making it ideal for use in urban and sub-urban construction. As urban cities around the world expand zero-emissions standards for transit vehicles to also include small and medium construction equipment, our customers are seeking electrified products in this space that match or exceed the reliability and performance of their diesel counterparts. The prototype machine will be used for testing to optimise the performance, prove the structural integrity and enhance the marketability.

EPIROC SUPPORTS KIMBERLY EKAPA MINING ON ITS DIGITISATION JOURNEY Epiroc’s Mobilaris Mining Intelligence system
Mobilaris Mining Intelligence (MMI) from Epiroc enables superior situational awareness to oversee a mining operation in all its complexity. Kimberley Ekapa Mining will use MMI to embrace mine digitalisation and create a superior decision support system to proactively enhance safety and increase productivity. With the use of MMI, Kimberley Ekapa Mining will be able to track assets in real-time; to integrate and visualise machine data, machine location and the shift plan together to close the loop between the plan and the reality. ‘MMI will help us start to modernise our old diamond mine and be the tipping point in terms of production optimisation,’ says Howard Marsden, general manager of Kimberley Ekapa Mining. ‘It will allow us to tag and keep better track of our mining personnel and equipment and give us access to real-time data, which will shed some light into the normally dark world of the underground mine. We expect this is to be productivity game changer.’ Thanks to its open architecture, MMI can be integrated easily with other systems in the mine. Kimberly Ekapa Mining will rely on MMI to compile information from other systems and make all information searchable and easily accessible to decisionmakers in real time. ‘MMI is the world’s leading multi-role 3D location based decision support system which enhances safety, productivity and efficiency in the mining operations’ says Ulla Korsman-Kopra, global business manager, Automation and Information Management Systems at Epiroc Underground Rock Excavation division. Users can access the web-based MMI interface from different devices to visualise the locations and movements of workers, vehicles and other equipment in real-time. ‘When a problematic situation arises, and for example lives are at stake, MMI can be critical. You need to act quickly and make informed decisions to save time and ultimately save lives,’ Korsman-Kopra adds. Epiroc will supply Kimberley Ekapa Mining with an MMI hardware and software package that includes personnel training and support. The system installation will be operational by year’s end.

INDUSTRY TALK
Overcoming digital dread
As African manufacturers begin to upgrade their operations, mapping out an incremental approach is essential. Smart factories, digitisation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are all hot topics in the manufacturing sector, generating considerable buzz - and some consternation. These disruptive technologies are exciting, yet the complexity can also be overwhelming.
W
ith a practical, incremental plan of action, including options with minimal disruption and low-risk, even those who have been reluctant to embrace next-generation technology can get started on the journey,’ advises Adriaan Rossouw, a director at EOH Infor Services (formerly Softworx), Infor’s Master Partner in Africa, operating as a Gold Partner.
START YOUR DIGITISATION JOURNEY There are five steps to embracing the digitisation journey: ease in; determine the goals; address funding issues; prioritise actions; and delineate the size of the move. ‘With a gradual approach, manufacturers can turn to edge applications, hybrid solutions, and a phased roll-out to build confidence and gain buy-in from the various teams,’ adds Rossouw. ‘A gradual approach also provides time to establish data security and ensure compliance with modern regulations, like the EU’s General Database Protection Regulation (GDPR).’ Most digital technologies, like IoT, are not out-of-the-box solutions you simply plug in. ‘A customised approach is critical,’ advises Rossouw. ‘Setting a very well-defined plan with measurable milestones will help eliminate project ambiguity. Focus on building a plan that is practical, doable, and cost-effective.’ Start with viable ‘phase one’ goals, such as: prevent unexpected down-time and keep shop floor assets running; better manage inventory levels with fewer stockouts; and meet customer demand for highly personalised products. Avoid broad goals like ‘double profits’ or ‘increase sales’.
START SMALL
SERVITISATION MODEL
Funding issues must be hashed out at the onset. If the business isn’t ready for a huge investment in IT solutions, start small with a subscription-based cloud deployment, eliminating the need for a large capital investment. Another way to overcome funding issues is to use the savings generated from Phase One to fund Phase Two projects. From business intelligent tools for tracking real-time results, to CRM solutions; shop floor scheduling, planning and time-tracking; field service management, tracking warranties and service agreements; and inventory management to improve accuracy, massive savings potential is offered. Building the business case to prioritise steps is important. There are some prerequisites that are must-have basics for modernising operations. ‘These are the foundations for growth. Consider: end-to-end visibility; mobility; attractive, easy-to-use interfaces; self-service reporting, workbenches and dashboards; and non-modified software. Thankfully, all of these elements can be achieved with one modern Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution,’ says Rossouw.
The size of the move often guides the strategy. Moving to a servitisation model is a good example of this. Offering the product as a service or outcome-based solution - rather than selling the product - is gaining traction in some industries (especially ones where the traditional product is high-value, like cranes, tractors, and road building equipment). ‘This often requires new strategic thinking and the integration of unfamiliar technologies,’ states Rossouw. ‘Analyse customer needs and provide solutions. With complete supply chain visibility and real time insights, organisations can not only have better control of their product, but also provide control to the customer, allowing them to track progress in real time,’ he adds. ‘For customers seeking specialised customisation, companies can leverage existing data by applying smart analytics and AI to determine and predict customer needs on an individual basis.’ EOH Infor Services www.eohinforservices.com

Greenco IE2 Range of Side Channel Blowers Energy efficient motors (IE2) use less electricity, run cooler, and often last longer than standard efficiency motors of the same size. ... For an electric motor, efficiency is the ratio of mechanical power delivered by the motor (output) to the electrical power supplied to the motor (input). The Greenco range of side channel blowers is available in single stage as well as two stage units. The Greenco range of side channel blowers comes as a complete unit and is easy to install. Ring blowers are used where standard centrifugal blowers are not suitable and higher pressures are required. As there is not contact between the casing and the rotating parts there is no direct friction during operation. These blowers operate completely oil free delivering clean oil free air. The prefabricated Roading Solution BRP Roading Solutions are a unique range of prefabricated, bitumen rubber-bound materials for sealing, waterproofing, maintenance and traffic calming.
B
RP Roading Solutions is manufactured by Gauteng-based company AJ Broom Road Products. The company has a reputation for exceeding users’ expectations and a 25 year history of providing long lasting and economical solutions for the road owner.
THE HISTORY OF BRP ROAD PATCH In the mid 1980s the shortcomings of the available processes and materials were drivers for the development of the carpet tile-like bitumen rubber-bound material. It had to be offered in a range of aggregate sizes to match or create a change in texture. The BRP Road Patch contains the cost and use of raw materials as it does not require the area to be enlarged for the process of compaction and asphalt repair to be undertaken and completed. BRP Roading Solutions provides

immediate access to the site of installation with no curing time necessary.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES BRP Roading Solutions creates job opportunities by permitting entrepreneurs to access the industry without the financial capital other methods require. The solution is applied at ambient temperature and can be rolled with a vehicle or even water-filled or a lawn roller.
PROTECT YOUR WORK AREA With BRP Roading Solutions you can protect areas such as schools, clinics, hospitals, shopping centres, housing complexes, mines and municipal areas. It is an effective alternative to asphalt traffic calming solutions. You can also seal off areas such as crocodile cracking, which would negate the need to dig

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION Ekurhuleni cops get a fabulous new floor When the Ekurhuleni Municipal Police Department needed a refurbishment of its existing floor in order to make it durable with an aesthetic finish, Sika stepped in to provide what was needed.
S
ika’s Arthur McGeer, with his acclaimed flooring solutions and technical expertise, was called in for the 1100m² floor upgrade. The initial phase of the project commenced in June 2018 when Sika’s specialised flooring product was specified by Donaspex contractor, Eric Blount. The existing floor had an old epoxy coating that was peeling off in areas, necessitating a total recoating of the floor. The client requested that the floor have an attractive and clean finish, which was exactly what Sika accomplished with the Sikafloor-24N PurCem. Sikafloor-24N PurCem is a multicomponent, coloured polyurethane modified, cement and aggregate thin layer screed with self-smoothing properties. It provides an easy-to-clean smooth surface, with a medium slip resistance, and is typically installed at 3.0 to 4.0mm thick for
non-regulated general industrial applications. The application on this floor was at 3L/m2 for a 3mm floor coating. Separate strips of different colours were used on the floor as a decorative finish resulting in the challenge of not being able to apply both colour coatings simultaneously, which was time consuming and required pin point accuracy. The green was applied first and allowed to dry before applying the red coating. With high quality products producing the desired glossy and attractive finish and the project being completed in just a month, the client was thrilled to see the change. Water-based products shift the landscape of industrial coatings Coatings in the industrial sector have always had to withstand the harshest conditions, which meant paint products were enamel based, difficult to work with and often full of toxic chemicals. Fast forward to 2018 and industry trends are clearly pointing towards a massive need for environmentally conscious, water-based coatings in the industrial paint arena. Leading the way in this space is Plascon, whose water-based, direct to metal and environmentally aware products are redefining the way OEMs and contractors are doing business.

It is so versatile and user-friendly that it has moved beyond just the industrial market. AQUADUO’s Direct-toMetal has rust inhibitors built into the coating, which is why there is no need for a primer. Despite this, it produces a protective sheen finish that can withstand the harshest environmental conditions. With this range, Plascon clearly has its eye on global coating trends. Its water-based, direct-to-metal products tick multiple boxes from the toughest industrial requirements to the environmentally aware home DIY’er.

The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business. The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials. The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort.
The Rocker Bar row, suited to manual bulk handling, has uses ranging from agricultural to industrial. Twice the size of a standard barrow, it is still perfectly balanced and easy to wheel. The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort. The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods. A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.
These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.

BMG and Fenner celebrate 90 years of Fenner in SA BMG - which acquired FPT Distribution SA (Fenner Power Transmission) over 20 years ago celebrates Fenner’s 90th year of business in South Africa this year.
T
he BMG team is proud to be the exclusive distributors of highly acclaimed Fenner products, which have been manufactured in South Africa for longer than any other power transmission brand,’ says Carlo Beukes, business unit manager, Power Transmission, BMG. ‘Fenner, which was established in England in 1861, remains the premium brand in power transmission, that generations of professional engineers have depended on and trusted. ‘Fenner power transmission products are synonymous with quality and reliability globally and have set the benchmark high for dependable components for high efficiency, low maintenance requirements and extended service life - even in the most arduous operating conditions. ‘An important factor for BMG in marketing Fenner products is the ‘Fenner Quality Assurance Initiative’, which is a world wide commitment to quality. ‘Customers have the assurance, wherever they are located, that the quality of Fenner products always meets exacting, agreed and internationally recognised industry standards. ‘Because standardisation and sparesholding costs are a high priority for most production operations, Fenner applies a policy of low-frequency product changes throughout its portfolio, with design improvements implemented only where these will offer significant customer benefits.’
Fenner’s products
32
THE FENNER RANGE BMG’s Fenner range - which consists of transmission and drive chains, vee and wedge belts, tyre and grid couplings, timing belts, sprockets and pulleys, and shaft mounted speed reducers - enables BMG to work with all sectors of industry. The company also services the industrial and mining replacement and re-sale markets and is a supplier to original equipment manufacturers. A strategic decision was made by BMG earlier this year to expand the portfolio, with the addition of Fenner conveyor belting products. Through a long-term agreement with Fenner Conveyor Belting, BMG is now the exclusive distributor of Fenner conveyor belting products locally and in sub-Saharan Africa. Fenner conveyor belting products, which include steel cord and solid woven conveyor belting, are manufactured at the Isando plant, according to stringent international quality standards.

t is no secret that the South African economy is in Going through five finance ministers in six years MANAGEMENT: HOW TOAfterTHINK trouble. a brief boutOUTSID of Ramaphoria, markets does not exactly communicate a message of stability E THE BOX once again realised that we had had ten years of and low risk. Zuma – and now four years of sideways market action with no real return. This could no longer be ignored as SA has decaying economic conditions and wilting confidence, both domestically and from the international investment community. SA has a monumental task before it and the changes needed within governmental structures and in the broader socio-economic landscape will take a lot of effort and a lot of time to affect. It may feel like time passes quickly, but the reality is that things change slowly. Optimism is not ill-founded. But we must stay cognisant of the current state of our economy and how the current economic backdrop can either perpetuate current market themes or perhaps ignite new ones.
THEME 1: Times of uncertainty
The theme dominating the SA investment landscape at present is probably that of uncertainty. No doubt something that many are tired of hearing about by now, as financial media has made countless references to uncertainty being the driver behind the poor market performance locally. But to contextualise: Investors base their decisions to either invest directly into an economy or via financial markets on a set of long-term objectives unique to them. They have an almost infinite number of investment options from which they can choose and therefore endeavour to choose the investment that they believe will best balance their appetite for risk with their expectation for return.
YOUR GUIDE TO MEDICAL
AID AND INSURANCE COST S
THEME 2: Recession time
The next major theme is that of decelerating GDP growth. SA’s GDP growth forecast has been cut from 1.5% for 2018 to 0.7%, with the economy shrinking a seasonally adjusted annualised 0.7% in the second quarter, following a 2.6% contraction in the first quarter. According to economist Mike Schüssler, and the BankservAfrica Economic Transaction Index (BETI) September report, GDP could well have picked up somewhat in August – maybe even enough to have put an end to the technical recession. But he warns that the uptick in the BETI was mainly due to backdated “salary increases for civil servants in July and August, and the late salary adjustments of Eskom employees and some municipal workers. We may still see delayed backdated payments occur
Shutterstock
Bear markets and recessionary times in fact offer great buy opportunities for investors. But it is important to pick stocks that will withstand the bad times. Trader Petri Redelinghuys explains his methodology to find local winners.
When things like the leadership of arguably one of the most important ministries in a country can change so abruptly, it becomes difficult to forecast what conditions are going to be five or ten years from now. Therefore, investors are reliant on the recent past as a frame of reference. Thus far that frame of reference indicates that the leadership structures in our government are unstable and unpredictable. Even though we now have a very strong and credible finance minister in the form of Tito Mboweni, given the recent track record we cannot at all be certain that he is going to still be around in a few years from now. Add to that the rhetoric around land expropriation without compensation; failing state-owned enterprises in constant need of taxpayer-funded bail-outs; growing discontent towards government from the public; our ailing economy; excessively high unemployment; and all the various external fears and shocks caused by the pull-back in international markets… Ladies and gentlemen, we have a recipe for uncertainty about the future. Put more simply, we have a lot of risk and no way of knowing whether that risk will reward investors in accordance with their expectations for returns. This theme has had a major influence on our economy over the last two years. This is best reflected in the decline in foreign direct investment in SA since 2016. SA: R30.20 (incl.
