t’s September already and this month COVID-19 vaccinations have been on my mind. I recently received my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine and I’m so happy and proud to be fully vaccinated. We may have differing views on vaccinations but it must be acknowledged that a vaccinated population will be the only way to get COVID-19 under control and open up the economy finally. Media24 is in the process of developing a workplace vaccination policy. Ishmet Davidson, CEO of Media24, explained in a recent article: “This policy is being developed within the ambit of the law and in a way which balances the rights of individual employees with our duty to provide a safe work environment. We will also enter into consultations with our employees before implementing any R policy. I am very much in BUYE favour of vaccinations. I think the case has already been made regarding the efficacy of vaccines and our duty towards our employees.” TS EC OJ CE R ALL PR FFEREN How are G A DISOLUTIONS FO MAKIN LE AB SUSTAIN you addressing a uyer.co.z ustrialb www.ind

CLASS 0 OIL-FREE AIR FOR PETROCHEMICAL PIPELINES Rand-Air was recently approached by a longstanding customer in the petrochemical sector for equipment to clear a sulfuric acid pipeline bound for decommissioning, they approached the task at hand in an innovative and agile manner, coming up with a different solution from those previously applied. “The project undertaken was unusual by nature. Our customer required the use of an air compressor which could perform optimally in a high-risk, volatile environment. We therefore decided that this particular project demanded a fresh solution - and a departure from the way in which it had previously been approached,” explains Rand-Air seasoned petrochemical industry sales representative Melanie Lake.

OIL-FREE AIR VERSUS NITROGEN “Acid cannot come into contact with any moisture – whether it be water or oil - due to its extreme volatility. Contaminants can cause hazardous chemical reactions and potentially even combustion,” explains Lake. The clearing of the first sulfuric acid pipeline - undertaken in 2020 - was intended as a onceoff project. Rand-Air therefore took the decision to go with the Class 0 oil-free compressor due to its production of high-quality, clean, oil-free, and totally dry compressed air. “Multiple consultations and analyses preceded this project, to ensure that the Class 0 oil-free compressor would produce air which was sufficiently pure, contaminant-free and dry, at a pressure dew point of minus 40 degrees,” she adds. Prior to Rand-Air supplying the oil-free compressor, this particular customer had always used nitrogen to clear their pipelines. By providing the Class 0 oil-free air solution, RandAir was able to prove that this was the better solution in this case: able to offer a more efficient solution in a shorter time, and with significantly less potential contamination or safety risk.

estimated five day compressor hire, was completed in just one. This incredible achievement further highlighted the operational efficiency of the oil-free compressors selected. Following the success of the initial pipeline clearing, four more projects took place during the course of the year, and another is set for October. “Efficiency and air purity are the reason that this particular compressor is the best and most viable solution for clearing pipelines,” says Lake. Compressors hired by the customer this year include the PTS1600 compressor with a dryer which produces 1600 cubic feet of compressed air per minute. “Oil-free compressors are able to be effective over tremendous distances. For example, some of the pipeline projects have required air to be pumped through pipelines of between 2.5 kms to 5 kms. When compressing air over this distance, pressure drops - which affects the flow. It is essential that air is pumped into the tanks at below Oil-free compressors have multiple uses. Customers usually only hire them for instrumentation, fermentation and aerating containers which are standard uses for these machines. According to Lake, the fact that these compressors can also be used in applications such as clearing petrochemical pipelines, demonstrates their diversity: “The oil-free compressor is even capable of moving an 80 ton transformer, thanks to its ability to blow

up industrial pillows which are then placed underneath the heavy transformer and floated,” she remarks. All other capabilities aside, the most compelling reason for the hire of the Class 0 oil-free compressor was because of its ability to produce clean, pure, contaminant-free dry air.

MAKING AGILITY COUNT Rand-Air attributes its high degree of customer success and repeat business to an around-the-clock service and strong team effort: “We have made ourselves indispensable to so many customers, due to our extremely high standards and substantial industry experience. Whenever there is a need for rental equipment, customers insist on using our solutions and services - thanks to our stringent safety audits, impeccable service and superior technical assistance,” says Lake. True to its reputation in many industries including petrochemical - Rand-Air has remained true to its ethos and tagline of ‘making agility count’ and providing effective solutions to customer’s operational needs. “We are a team which works together and supports each other no matter the task. Our technicians and staff are on call 24/7 to ensure customer service and support. We will always be prepared to go above and beyond for a customer, looking at their problems from fresh angles, to find them the best solution possible – ‘clearing the way’ for innovation and improved productivity,” concludes Lake.

ULTIMATE EFFICIENCY WITH MULTIPLE USES The first pipeline clearing project using oil-free air turned out to be so successful that the

DEKRA INDUSTRIAL SCOOP SE CONSECUTIVE NOSCAR SAFET Dekra Industrial SA has received another prestigious NOSCAR safety award. The company has furthermore retained its place in the NOSA five-star system and the NOSA integrated five star system during the period under review.

SAFETY HONOUR The award, coveted globally by any company serious about business ethics and safety, is the highest ‘safety’ honour which can be bestowed on a business.

This is particularly so for Dekra Industrial SA, a company which locally and globally epitomises safety, and as such, has always striven – as expressed in its taglines - to be ‘the heroes of safety’ and ‘the global partner for a safe world’. Dekra as an organisation has a 96-year industry track record - with a footprint in over 50 countries, across five continents, and is globally acknowledged as being expert in NDT, material testing, laboratory services, advanced NDT, asset integrity services and industry training. As part of the global parent company,

Dekra Industrial in South Africa has played a major role in the fields of NDT and inspection locally - across a wide range of industry sectors - for 38 years. For Dekra Industrial SA, the NOSCAR Safety Award represents far more than just an award: “Winning a renowned international safety award is one thing. However, to be the recipient of this award for seven consecutive years, is an achievement which speaks volumes about who we are and what we aspire to as a company,” says Health Safety and Environment manager, Carina Kleinhans. “Our business intention has remained clear: to entrench a safer culture within and outside of the workplace, in line with our parent company Dekra’s globallystated intention to be the market leaders by 2025: offering the highest quality non-destructive testing, inspection and advanced technology – coupled with the best service - to our clients, with safety as our key priority.” “The NOSCAR award is bestowed on companies which demonstrate the very highest standard in safety compliance; and Dekra Industrial is proud to be included in these ranks,” Kleinhans remarks.

STRINGENT CRITERIA After a rigorous verification audit, eligible companies are required to meet stringent criteria which must be maintained for a period of three years in order to qualify for the NOSCAR Award. These include: • Verification audit score of >95% for period of review • Disabling Injury Frequency Rate (DIFR) of less than 0.8% • No fatal accidents • No diagnoses of an irreversible occupational health case • No major environmental incidents

EVENTH TY AWARD improvement; safety; health; environmental; risk management; systems; compliance and effectiveness. “Our sincere thanks and congratulations go to the passionate dedication and efforts of Carina and her HSE department – as well as the rest of our management and staff - for the effort they have invested in creating a safety culture within our company, and maintaining HSE compliance of such a high standard,” says Johan Gerber, Managing Director of Dekra Industrial. “We are a company that is committed to improving safety in the workplace, at our clients’ sites, at home, on the road, and in every situation. In line with this ethos, we encourage every Dekra Industrial employee to continuously identify areas for improvement, manage our risks and constantly stay abreast of changes within the workplace,” Kleinhans advises. The fact that we have achieved RD 0034-compliance (a nuclear safety compliance standard), and is also one of the few NDT companies locally to hold the ISO 45001 certification, is clear evidence of our ongoing quest for improvement. In addition, this 7th NOSCAR award proves once again that we ‘walk the talk’ to the ultimate safety and benefit of our valued staff and clients,” Kleinhans concludes.

SOUTH AFRICA FACES TOUGH ROAD TO NET-ZERO EMISSIONS BY 2050, BUT OPPORTUNITIES ARE ON THE WAY The International Energy Agency (IEA) – of which South Africa is an association country – recently released a report detailing a way forward for countries looking to achieve netzero emissions by 2050 and thus give the world an even chance of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C. However, the recommended path to net-zero would be a tough one for South Africa to follow, considering our heavy reliance on coal. As the world prepares for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) taking place in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021, South Africa must Lethabo Manamela interim CEO of the South African focus its efforts on tangible solutions for emission National Energy Development reductions. “Given the current South African coal-dominated electricity generation context, the IEA milestone targets will prove a lot more difficult to achieve than most other countries,” says Lethabo Manamela, interim CEO of the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI). Amongst others, the report, Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector, recommends that by 2030 all subcritical coal‐fired power plants must be phased out and, by 2050, global coal use must be 90% lower than in 2020.

JET FRAMEWORK However, Manamela adds that there is reason for hope. “Recent signals from the State President, together with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), other government ministries, Eskom and the private sector, shows a clear commitment by all the major decision makers to achieve this target.” She adds that this will, however, must take place within a Just Energy Transition (JET) framework, which appears to be gaining a lot of momentum in the country and is sure to be a big focus of COP26. The JET is crucial for South Africa’s sustainable and inclusive move towards cleaner energy practices. In this regard, last year saw the formation of the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) which is mandated to coordinate and oversee the transition towards a low-carbon economy and society which considers our unique socio-economic landscape. “The socio-economic situation in South Africa brings with it both a number of challenges, but also a lot of opportunities. That is why the emphasis placed on JET in South Africa is so important. The ‘new’ opportunities brought about by a transition to newer, more modern and clean technologies provide with it the opportunity to introduce many more innovative skills into the economy, which will go a long way in reducing the high unemployment levels, especially amongst the youth, and it can potentially get the economy moving in the right direction,” says Manamela. She adds that South Africa has many ‘good news’ initiatives in place to report on at COP26.

LOW CARBON ECONOMY

Read more industry news at www.b2bcentral. co.za/channel/ industrial-buyer/

For example, Phase 2 of the Carbon Tax due for implementation in the beginning of 2023, will see a radically different carbon pricing regime that will accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy. Added to that, there is the envisaged growth in the Hydrogen Economy, which if successful, could see a major shift in the local energy landscape in the medium-term. In addition, SANEDI has been involved in the implementation of the recently gazetted regulations on Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for buildings, which will see building owners prioritising their energy efficiency initiatives in the coming years. Finally, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s increase in the licence threshold for people to generate power from 1MW to 100MW is another step in the right direction. “While the road to net-zero is sure to be a challenge for South Africa, we are up for this challenge. With many initiatives already in place, there is reason for hope as we work together to combat climate change. SANEDI looks forward to continuing its work in transforming our local energy sector to one which is sustainable, reliable and economically inclusive,” Manamela concludes.

CHIETA AND SABS WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE MORE JOBS IN THE CHEMICALS SECTOR

The Chemical Industries Education & Training Authority (CHIETA) and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will see the organisations working together to support and create new jobs in the country’s growing chemicals sector.

ENTREPRENEURS FOR TRACTION The MoU, which will span a period of 36 months, will include the provision of the SABS’s world-class conformity assessment services to SMMEs that form part of CHIETA and the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Entrepreneurs for Traction training programme. The programme, which is hosted at UJ’s Johannesburg Business School and Centre for Entrepreneurship, is also supported by a R5 million grant from CHIETA that is aimed at developing and training these SMMEs within the chemicals sector. Through the MoU, CHIETA and SABS

10

can support all alumni from the Entrepreneurs for Traction programme with testing, certification, and training services, ensuring longevity of the programme and growth of small businesses within the chemicals sector. “CHIETA is excited to work with a worldclass standards organisation such as the SABS. We undoubtedly have a common goal of working towards the growth and transformation of our economy. This will assist us in achieving our mission to facilitate skills development, education and training through innovative solutions for sustainable livelihoods. Through this new collaboration, more than 100 SMMEs will be supported to grow their enterprises and create new jobs thereby helping to address the problem of high unemployment in the country,” says Yershen Pillay, CEO of CHIETA. “We cannot train for the sake of training as the workplace is shrinking and opportunities are few and far between. CHIETA is therefore focusing on entrepreneurial skills to grow the number

INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

of SMMEs and startups so that training interventions are accompanied by enterprise growth. CHIETA’s collaboration with SABS comes at a time when unemployment in South Africa is extremely high and more support is needed for enterprises to grow and create new jobs. The SABS stamp of approval will lead to increased competitiveness, new export growth opportunities and new local business opportunities for SMMEs in the chemical industries,” adds Pillay.

BEST PRACTICE The SABS and CHIETA have also agreed to share knowledge, expertise and best practice regarding standards and compliance in the chemicals sector. By facilitating information exchange, the MoU will help create a more conducive chemicals business environment. The Entrepreneurs for Traction SMMEs have met the programme manager and the project will be underway soon.

SMEs remain resilien impact of July unrest While previous data by Skynamo’s Industry Thermometer revealed that political turmoil in South Africa in July 2021 did not have as big an impact on sales as expected, the organisation’s August data is showing that the unrest is having a long term effect on small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

S

FIRST SIGNS OF SLOWDOWN

MEs are essential to the economy’s health and predicted to lead an economic recovery post-COVID. However, many of these businesses are fighting to keep their doors open since the onset of the pandemic, with 89% impacted by the recent rioting and looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, according to research by BeyondCovid. Zane van Rooyen, product marketing manager at Skynamo, South Africa’s leading field sales app, says that data from the Industry Thermometer, which benchmarks

‘Small businesses should form a community and assist each other whenever possible. For those that can, it’s time to reach out by mentoring other entrepreneurs, sponsoring local non-profits with your time and skills, and supporting small businesses and startups. Consider running free training workshops and be generous with your network’ 12

Zane van Rooyen product marketing manager at Skynamo industry sales activity and sector health, showed decreased sales in previous months, but not as much as had been anticipated. “It does indicate though that there might be a bigger longer-term impact on the recovery that SMEs are working so hard to achieve post the pandemic.” “When comparing July with June orders, we see technology, accessories, sporting goods and pharmaceuticals taking the biggest knocks, with these sectors showing lower combined ordering values,” adds van Rooyen. “However, the ordering demands of our services customers increased by more than 500%.” He believes this could be linked to the urgent need to restock after supply disruptions in July. “Encouragingly, our usual steady growth frontrunners like food and beverages, electronics, building materials and hardware, waste management, health and safety and others have maintained the steady month-on-month growth we’ve seen throughout the year so far,” he says.

INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

Van Rooyen says that unfortunately the company’s Industry Thermometer data for August has shown the first slowdown of the growth pattern this year. “Optimistically, only eight out of the 26 industry groups monitored have shown negative growth when compared with the previous month. This negative, or stalling, is small compared to the big drop experienced in 2020 as a result of the pandemic.” “Apparel, such as clothing and shoes, as well as packaging were amongst the industries that struggled in August,” he adds. “However, looking at the combined total of all the industries monitored together, the graph still shows an ever so slight outcome in the right direction. Order volumes were lower than the previous months this year, but August managed to still hold its own, if only just.”

IMPACT WILL BE FELT FOR SOME TIME These results mirror the sentiment of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, who recently said that the economic impact of the recent unrest would not be quickly resolved and would persist beyond 2021. He said that while early estimates of the economic impact were about R50 billion, the impact would be felt for some time. “However, the 1.2% economic growth recorded in the second quarter this year, as mentioned by the National Treasurer, has been encouraging to witness in our data,” says van Rooyen. Only time will tell what the tight rope of the next few months will look like, he says. “I am cautiously optimistic that the South

nt despite long term t in KZN and Gauteng African resilience will shoulder this wave and that local business will emerge wiser and stronger at the other end.”

SOUTH AFRICANS MUST SUPPORT SMES However, in light of the country’s delayed vaccination rollout and reports of possible renewed volatility, there is much to be done to ensure SMEs do not face long-term difficulties in the months ahead. Although government assistance in terms of funding and support is essential, van Rooyen believes it is vital for all South Africans to support local SMEs to ensure they are able to weather the

storm. “In addition, small businesses should form a community and assist each other whenever possible,” he asserts. “For those that can, it’s time to reach out by mentoring other entrepreneurs, sponsoring local non-profits with your time and skills, and supporting small businesses and startups. Consider running free training workshops and be generous with your network.” This is exactly what Skynamo’s community of SMEs did to assist each other during July. “We reached out to businesses affected by the unrest and proposed that if any of our customers’ products could somehow help other

Skynamo customers to repair their damages, we would connect them – and offer a once-off 10% discount on a onemonth subscription,” says van Rooyen. The company has had a great response so far, with customers offering special discounts on paint and related goods, personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning materials, paper products, industrial supplies, hand sanitizer, disposable masks, IR thermometers, flooring, brooms and office-related products. INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

How manufacturers Today, new technologies are connecting the manufacturer directly to their operations and their customers like never before. With historical data as a foundation, manufacturers can fulfill a promise to end customers. They can track inventory anywhere in the supply chain as well as track and forecast delivery dates of raw materials as well as accurately forecast manufacture dates. Kevin Dherman, chief innovation officer at SYSPRO, explains how manufacturers can commercialise data.

T

he rise of digitalisation and automation in manufacturing is resulting in the generation of a colossal volume of data. Previously, businesses would gather data (often manually) across the business and try to draw a meaningful conclusion from any further examination. The challenge was that a good data conversion seldomly made an impact across the value chain. One way in which manufacturers are collating data at the edge is through the Internet of Things or a network of interconnected sensors, instruments and other devices. Businesses are then able to access a single source of truth through their ERP system and use data insights to facilitate the improvement of productivity and efficiency. While data insights are clearly the route to improved operational efficiencies, the industry is also asking whether there is

14

an opportunity to generate new revenue streams through data monetization and the re-exploration of business models.

DEFINING DATA MONETIZATION Gartner defines data monetisation as the process of using data to obtain quantifiable economic benefit. Internal or indirect methods include using data to make measurable business performance improvements and inform decisions. External or direct methods include data sharing to gain beneficial terms or conditions from business partners, information bartering, or offering information products and services (for example, including information as a valueadded component of an existing offering). Gartner goes on to say that businesses use information as an asset and create new services or enter new business models.

INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

There are a few ways that manufacturers can monetise data.

BLURRING THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Some manufacturers are seeing the benefits of not only selling a product, but also offering a post-sales service through a ‘pay and use model’. Take for example a traditional refrigerator manufacturer. Imagine if they were to attach an IoT sensor to each of their appliances to monitor up-time and the product’s average temperature and humidity on the customers’ premises. As soon as any of these factors drop below a certain threshold, the device could send a message via the ERP system, which could in turn create a ticket and notify a technician that they need to address the issue

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

s can monetise data on that refrigerator. Predictive maintenance can then allow that manufacturer to improve overall customer service by reducing equipment breakdowns and they could even offer an extended maintenance contract. Manufacturers could also use this opportunity to upsell and cross-sell more products, especially when the refrigerator reaches end-of-life. Often referred to as ‘assets-as-a service’, ‘equipment-as-a-service or servitisation, this type of transition from a product to service offering would require a good understanding of end customer pain-points. This connected society will ultimately allow manufacturers to build better products.

ENABLING CROSS-SECTOR COLLABORATION Data can also open pathways to crosssector collaboration. A good example could be a partnership between an electronics manufacturer that produces alarm tracking systems for motor vehicles and the car hire industry. The car rental company can leverage data from the manufacturer to monitor how drivers are treating the vehicles and to monitor speed. The manufacturer can then monetize both their devices and their data by collaborating across various industry sectors.

host of critical insights.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE SMART MANUFACTURER OF THE FUTURE To embrace these new business models and new digital routes to market, all of your data needs to be live and all systems need to be integrated. Here, ERP acts as a platform to integrate systems and provides real-time visibility into stock, while supporting the collection and control of payments from direct consumer sales. It is also vital to select an IoT agnostic ERP system that is compatible with all of the major IoT platforms to achieve these improved efficiencies and added revenue streams. Last, but not least, your ERP provider should be cloud compatible to allow you to collect all data from IoT devices. Syspro www.za.syspro.com

In fact, 67% stated that due to digital initiatives such as e-commerce, they could continue to trade effectively during the pandemic. Manufacturers can leverage existing eCommerce platforms such as Amazon to sell products directly to consumers online with APIs, or software intermediaries that allow application programs to interact with each other and share data. APIs are integrated into an ERP system for manufacturers to gain first-hand information on what customers are buying. By analysing this information, manufacturers can gain a

SUSTAINABILITY A sustainable yet cost-effective marking solution for recyclable packaging Over the past decade sustainable packaging has increasingly become a top priority for brand owners. Traceability Solutions’ iCON 3 laser can create permanent yet sustainable and affordable coding and marking on environmentally friendly packaging.

T

hroughout 2021, there have been relevant and effective activities taking place that address consumer hunger for brands that respect the environment. Consumers’ increased awareness continues to drive the sustainable packaging mission of brand owners. Around 74% of consumers say they are willing to pay an additional amount for products in sustainable packaging. Recyclable packaging seems to matter most to consumers because recycling is something they can personally do to help the planet.

TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO A MAMMOTH TASK There is no quick fix for the damage that’s already been done, short of a mammoth

worldwide cleaning task force that would cost billions. But new technology has provided practical solutions that could help phase out or dramatically decrease plastic consumption in SA and worldwide. When we buy fruit or veg at a supermarket, we either pick them up in a pre-packed box, which is sealed in a film of plastic, lift them off the shelf in a ready-packed plastic bag, or pick the produce we want off the shelf, tear off a plastic bag and have a shop assistant weigh it so that we can take it to the till to be scanned. In all these instances, some form of packaging is necessary because it needs a barcode, which is generally attached to the packaging, for the product to be scanned. Similarly, at the supply chain level, produce needs to be marked to be tracked and traced enroute to the retailer and at every stage of the production process.

Aside from being bad for the environment, packaged produce is also one of the root causes of food waste. Food wastage statistics in South Africa are frightening, with around 30% (10 million tons) of our food wasted annually. Of that, agricultural products like fruit, veg and cereals make up 70%. And 25% of wastage occurs at the processing and packaging stage of the value chain. 90% of all that waste ends up in a landfill. The time has come to throw that packaging away (in a safe, environmentally friendly manner, of course). Food grade ink and food engraving are solutions that have made package-free produce a reality, from distribution to the shelf. And they don’t only do their bit for saving the environment, they also cut down on costs, wastage and shrinkage, both at supplier and store level. Tattoos have become quite a popular fashion choice in modern society. And it’s a trend that seems to be taking off on fresh produce now too. Produce “body modification” is a reality. And it’s changing the way produce moves from farm to fork. Non-toxic and compostable, PVA bags break down in the water and have very little impact on the environment. With no microplastic waste, these bags, which do not harm ecosystems or

INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

contribute to global ocean plastic pollution, are increasingly used in everyday life. Water-soluble bags are generally used for bulk purchases, especially in the food sector.

A PERMANENT MARK THAT DOES NOT SMUDGE As a result of changing mindsets, trends and legislation, supermarkets are currently promoting ecological bags to reduce their carbon footprint. Offering consumers ecological and reusable alternatives, as well as joining the current trend for sustainability. However, the growing popularity of these new materials creates the challenge of developing and searching for the best technology to mark and code them in a legible, permanent and sustainable way. Clean, fast and consumablefree, our latest laser, the iCON 3, delivers a permanent mark that does not smudge. In addition, it works with most substrates, including labels, cardboard boxes, plastics, glass, wood and textiles. Furthermore, it can produce unique and highly defined marks such as QR codes. The iCON 3 does not use inks or solvents. Thus, reducing running costs as there is no need to budget for consumables. In addition, it ensures a cleaner and more hygienic working environment, and the lack of solvent related carbon emissions and harmful waste also means that production lines will be environmentally compliant. The iCON 3 is extremely affordable, therefore it is ideal for businesses keen to try laser technology for the first time. Tracepack www.tracepack.co.za

How to adjust your labelling to reduce packaging waste In a time where throw-away culture has increased packaging waste worldwide, companies are looking for solutions that enable them to provide more and use less. With mounting pressure, packaging is changing. Fix-a-Form self-adhesive labels, available locally from Pyrotec Packmedia, occupy the same space as an ordinary label but may contain up to 120 pages of extra information. This will assist with reducing the amount of packaging and paper waste that ends up at landfill.

E

ven though packaging is necessary, a lot of products have excess packaging where the information that is needed could be applied directly to the product rather than adding packaging to display necessary information. This could be for instructions, legislated, multilingual or promotional information. The packaging not only adds to the cost of the product but also to discarded waste.

LET THE RESELLER BEWARE In the late 1970s Fix-a-Form International’s sister company, Denny Bros UK, combined a printed, folded booklet with a self-adhesive label, and the first multi-page Fix-a-Form label was born.

These Fix-a-Form booklet labels, locally available from Pyrotec PackMedia, are a multipage solution suitable for an array of packaging types. They are ideal for instructions for use, information and promotional labelling, and adding multilingual information. These innovative self-adhesive booklet labels occupy the same space as an ordinary label but may contain up to 120 pages of extra information. These can be tailored to suit different product needs, supplied in a standard reel format and applied with standard industry labelling equipment.

LET THE RESELLER BEWARE In South Africa, one of Packaging SA’s objectives is to address minimising packaging

and paper waste sent to landfill by supporting material reduction, recycling, recovery and other related activities. The vision is to strive for zero packaging and paper waste to landfill. In pursuit of this aim, PSA’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Plan has a long-term vision in line with SA’s National Development Goals and the global Sustainable Development Goals, of which South Africa is a signatory. The target for collection/diversion rates will increase from its current 57.1% to 66.9% within a five-year period when the plan is implemented. This compares well to the EU’s target of 65% for all paper and packaging by 2025. Safeguard your business. Customers will be thinking about reducing packaging so look to invest now for your future. The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business. The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials. The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort.

The Rocker Bar row, suited to manual bulk handling, has uses ranging from agricultural to industrial. Twice the size of a standard barrow, it is still perfectly balanced and easy to wheel. The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort. The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods. A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.

These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.

WAREHOUSING

Warehousing is booming and business process outsourcing is stepping up to meet demand South Africa’s retail model has changed dramatically in the last 18 months, partially driven by the pandemic and lockdowns, which vastly accelerated the growth of e-commerce and altered buying patterns. This has put pressure on the warehousing element of the logistics chain, which has had to adapt to these shifts in demand. Gean Botha, managing director of PPO says optimising processes lies at the heart of the ability to store, manage and deliver stock at the pace required today, which is where business process outsourcing (BPO) can play a pivotal role.

A

s traditional retailers have developed more robust online sales strategies and people have become more accepting of e-commerce in South Africa, we have seen significant growth in this space. This growth will only continue in the years to come, and the warehousing element of the logistics chain needs to support the shift. There has already been a significant expansion of industrial areas to offer greater warehousing facilities, especially close to airports and major transport routes. However, the physical storage space of the warehouse is only one element. Managing the people element, especially given limitations on the number of staff permitted due to social distancing requirements, has become a real challenge. Furthermore, warehousing businesses face the challenge of sourcing trained and qualified staff due to occurrences of illness and isolation, brought on by COVID-19. Ensuring levels of output are met while balancing costs, requires an intelligent approach. This growth does, however, come with certain challenges, such as effectively managing warehouse storage space and human capital. The management of human resources is further exacerbated by making necessary

‘Improving productivity is the first step that any warehousing provider should take – and this includes training, process optimisation and warehouse capacity utilisation’ 28

Gean Botha managing director of PPO considerations for COVID-19 regulations, such as social distancing. Ensuring adequately trained and qualified personnel further ensures business continuity should employees fall ill or be forced into isolation due to the pandemic. It is of utmost importance to maintain a delicate balance between input and output costs during this growth period, considering the unforeseen challenges that could arise due to the pandemic.

OPTIMISATION IS THE KEY There is a physical limitation on the amount of work people can do, and increasing headcount is typically the first step in increasing output. However, in the current situation, this is not always possible and is often not the most effective solution in any case. For an increase or decrease in headcount to be effective, productivity and performance needs to be at a level of at least 95%. Therefore, improving productivity is the first step that any warehousing provider should take – and this includes training, process optimisation and

INDUSTRIAL BUYER SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

warehouse capacity utilisation. If warehouses are too small, and there is too much stock on hand, work areas will be congested. On the other hand, if there is not enough stock, then warehouses will not be able to fulfil orders. Both scenarios result in lost revenue. The key is to maximise volume over minimal time. Having a BPO partner not only ensures that processes are streamlined, but also that staff are trained to the level required to be highly productive. On top of this, should additional resources be required, the BPO provider will assist by scaling their workforce up or down as demand necessitates.

COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS To meet the drastic increase in volumes required today and, in the future, expansion needs to happen rapidly. There are many elements to consider outside of human resources, and the infrastructure needs to support efforts to maximise capacity. In addition, as volumes increase and resources are under pressure, it can become challenging to meet service level agreements. Transparency and effective planning are critical – this is not a short-term fix, but a longterm view of where the industry is going and how it can be adapted. The more organised and well-run the warehousing provider, the greater their likelihood of survival, because agility to rapid market changes has become a hallmark of success. When BPO providers collaborate with warehousing and logistics suppliers and communicate effectively, the entire process can be strategically planned and executed for maximum mutual benefit. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

First-ever all in one re-usable earplug set is a gamechanger Chronotech has developed an innovative single material earplug set with integral holders that can help reduce costs, improves hygiene and safety and reduces environmental impact.

‘Pluxone is a soft “Christmas tree” type earplug known for good fit and comfort’

T

he cords of a traditional earplug sets tend to become entangled very easily. Valuable production time is spent in attempts to untangle them or the set is simply discarded and a new one is used. Earplugs stowed in pockets or just hung around the neck when not in use, collects clothing fibres and environmental contaminants. Subsequent cleaning wastes production time or leads to frequent replacement. In worst cases, contaminants may lead to in-ear irritations and costly infections. Keeping earplugs stowed in a holder when not in use, will reduce these problems and their associated costs.

COST SAVING ISO 352-2 requires that all re-usable earplugs must be supplied with re-sealable container. This specification is an attempt to improve hygiene and reduce earplug turnover, thus saving costs and reducing environmental impact. Traditionally this meant supplying the earplug set in a re-sealable bag, which is mostly discarded immediately after first use, or supplying the set in an expensive cumbersome rigid holder. To ensure holders are not lost and that earplugs with holders are made affordable to all, Pluxone earplugs has an integrated holder in which the earplugs can be stowed when not in use. Stowing the earplugs in the integrated holder also reduces cord entanglement. Thanks to its singular part construction, Pluxone is also very competitively priced.

Pluxone earplugs to decrease their carbon footprint and increase compliance with ISO14001 environmental management system, can thus readily do so by implementing Pluxone. Pluxone earplugs are packaged with the earplugs in their holders, without the need for additional plastic bag.

SAFETY Cords of traditional earplugs, especially the braided cords, have very high breaking strengths. Many industrial users thread the cord of their earplug through their jacket buttonholes. Should the cord get caught up in moving machinery, it may pull the user in harm’s way. Pluxone earplugs has a high elongation cord, but limits the breaking strength to reduce this risk.

ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY Millions of earplugs end up in our landfills each year. Packaged corded earplugs can consist of two to six different types of materials. This makes it uneconomical to recycle. Pluxone earplug is injection molded as a single component using highly recyclable polymers. Used Pluxone earplugs can be returned to Chronotech for recycling into other usable products such as erasers. Companies looking

COMFORT Pluxone is a soft “Christmas tree” type earplug known for good fit and comfort. Additionally, the cord is fixed perpendicular to the stem, enabling the user to wear the cord over the ear, thus reducing irritating cord transmitted noise.

LOCAL MANUFACTURING Pluxone has been developed locally and is also manufactured locally by Chronotech. Several patents, design registrations and trademark registrations has been done.

WHERE TO BUY Pluxone can be ordered at most major PPE suppliers, or contact Fetotech at info@ fetotech.com or 021 205 7566. Chronotech/Pluxone www.pluxone.com

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

COVID-19 is having a positive effect on occupational health in the workplace COVID-19 has without a doubt had some kind of negative impact on each of our lives. Leaving aside the rate of infection and the global death toll, there’s the complete change to our way of life as well, not to mention the significant impact the virus has had on the economy, both locally and internationally. Yet, surprisingly the virus has also brought with it some positive impacts, most notably in the area of occupational health.

WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH? Simply put, occupational health is the promotion of health and wellbeing in the workplace – ensuring that all employees enjoy the highest standard of physical, emotional, social and mental health within the working environment. It’s here that COVID-19 has had a role to play, and an unexpectedly positive one at that.

COVID-19 AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH – THE PROS Think back (if you can) to life at work before COVID-19. No social distancing, no masks, no emphasis on hand washing or sanitising, and no real insistence on sick employees going home. These days we wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without a mask on, without sanitising and washing our hands regularly, and without standing far apart from each other. What’s more, if we felt even the slightest

‘While it’s difficult to measure the impact on productivity and work attendance this might have had, given the challenges of COVID-19, it’s nevertheless encouraging to see just how big an impact a little more hygiene can make’ bit sick we would insist on staying at home, both for our own health, and the health of our colleagues as well. It’s thanks to measures like these, and an increased awareness of our own personal health, that South Africa was able to skip

the flu season almost entirely last year – a completely unprecedented event. In a ‘normal’ year, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) would usually record up to 1 000 cases of flu between April and August. Last year, they recorded just one. While it’s difficult to measure the impact on productivity and work attendance this might have had, given the challenges of COVID-19, it’s nevertheless encouraging to see just how big an impact a little more hygiene can make.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH GOING FORWARD? Will the insistence on strict hygiene measures in the workplace continue once COVID-19 is a thing of the past? It’s difficult to say, but what’s evident is that paying closer attention to health and wellness in the work environment can only have a positive effect. It’s this positive effect that can help to create a unique opportunity for the occupational health sector – one that will allow it to support healthy employees in returning to work, and safeguard their health while there, hopefully with the help and investment of the government as well. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenging time for all, however an increased focus on personal health and workplace hygiene can only be beneficial in the long run. More productivity, better attendance and increased physical and mental health – they may be small wins in comparison to the bigger issues at hand, but they’re still valuable, nonetheless.
