AN IDEAL ALTERNATIVE FOR EYE-CATCHING FLOORS
8
Let’s face it – with all the flooring options out there even the most skilled flooring professionals sometimes feel overwhelmed. So what should you choose? By nature, people strive for floors that are out of the ordinary, not mass produced and that will be adaptable to their everyday lives. It is for these exact reasons that Cemcrete is the obvious choice as the unique alternative.
BENEFITS OF COLOUR HARDENER
• Can be used for interior & exterior floors
• Can be used in conjunction with Cemcrete’s
• Suitable for domestic or commercial projects
• Colours concrete to a depth of 2-3mm – No risk
of colour being rubbed off or abraded

DID YOU KNOW that you can get creative and add some extra character to your floor finish by incorporating a tile, wood, aluminium strip, brick or pebble inlay? Alternatively, you could just have a standard cut line that will look like a giant tile.
The second flooring option is CreteCote, a 1,6mm cement-based skim-on coating, perfect for renovations.
BENEFITS OF CRETECOTE
• Thin skim-on coating
• Versatile application – can be used to coat
• Interior use only
• Application with a steel trowel
• Reaches a compressive strength of 35MPa after
counters & vanities 28 days (this is solely dependent on the screed)
CreteCote is a micro coating that was created to provide the look and feel of concrete, but at a fraction of the cost and weight of real concrete.

LAMINATE FLOORING QUALITY IS EVERYTHING! For the past three years now Traviata Flooring has sourced its laminate flooring from Laminate Park GMBH in Heusweiler, Germany – without one single product claim in South Africa!! There is definitely truth in the statement that “you get what you pay for” and nowhere is this truer than with regard to laminate flooring. So what is it that makes a quality laminate? Perhaps the key element is the density of the core board. Laminate Park produces some of the highest density core board available today. Add to this moisture resistant additives and a silicone wax treatment on all edges and you have a floor that really performs. From an aesthetic perspective, the surface and edge treatments offer a variety of options. The different surface finishes include “In Register” embossing and “Natural Timber”. Add to this the choice of square edge or V groove and you cater for almost every requirement. On the practical side, the Laminate Park product utilises a “5G” Top Locking method for ease of installation and extra high strength joints. Laminate Park is a member of the European Producers of Laminate Flooring (EPLF), is PEFC certified in terms of sourcing timber raw materials from sustainable plantations and is approved in South Africa by SAWLFA, the South African Wood and Laminate Flooring Association.

TILE TRENDS: WHAT’S STILL HOT
Union Tiles gives some feedback on tile trends going forward, based on happenings this year. There were many who believed that the natural materials trend – where tiles were manufactured to look like wood, stone and other natural finishes – would start to fade. But this trend is as strong as ever and many of the leading manufacturers in Spain and Italy have once again produced tiles with the natural appearance of wood, linen, granite, travertine, marble and cement. The more experienced and quality driven manufacturers stand out through their use of colour and realistic surface effects. What has become apparent it is a seeming lack of interest in the more monochromatic look, while the combination of structured and polished tiles is growing in popularity. The realisation amongst many architects and designers is that the cheapest of imported products are very often not the best and, in many instances, these tend to fail the application they are used for. Specifiers
are asking questions about durability in combination with the aesthetic appeal of the product. Natural stone….. Well, the durability and timelessness of this product just carries on. Marble, granite, travertine, quartzite, sandstone and limestone… these are the products of nature’s gods. Once you have been moved by the product and felt the pull of nature’s beauty you will not easily be persuaded to consider other products. The natural veining and vibrancy of marble is a delight to the senses. These are truly products that have been created for an eternity. There are so many surprises to offer in terms of products, size, great quality and good pricing. Join Union Tiles for a feast of beauty that will inspire your senses. Many new products will be arriving shortly – watch this space!

BIG, BEAUTIFUL VINYLS “BIG” is the buzzword at Belgotex Floors as they introduce two beautiful new LVT ranges – Penninsula and Portland – that are BIGGER and BROADER than the standard sizes.
16
The new oversize vinyls bring the charm and beauty of natural wood to centre stage, in line with Belgotex’s passion for exquisite fashionable flooring. Portland and Penninsula’s longer and wider plank dimensions – 230 x 1500mm – indulge the world’s love affair with timber tones and textures, covering a larger surface area per plank with far fewer joins. Each range features a delicate wooden grain design with fewer characteristic markings such as repetitive knots or saddles. The simple, embossed matt surfaces bring the soft, natural textures and bevelled beauty of various timber species to life. Portland’s range of eight rustic colourways include a distressed whitewashed option. The company is confident that these beautiful ranges will prove to be the most aesthetically pleasing vinyls yet – no small claim given their experience in vinyl flooring over the past 8 years! Made from 100% virgin PVC that contains no impurities or recycled content, Penninsula is ideal for corporate and commercial installations where organic materials and colours have been used. It’s available in eight contemporary colourways, from cooler, light shades with grey undertones to dark and dramatic colours, and this dry-back (stick-down) system provides a convenient, comfortable floor suitable for offices, retail outlets and large expanses. The multi-layered 3mm surface helps improve productivity and concentration as it absorbs sound, while the superior 0.55mm wear layer provides antibacterial, UV-resistant protection for its glorious goodlooks. Portland’s range of eight rustic colourways, including a popular distressed whitewashed option, adds a fashionable earthy appeal to residential interiors.
Bringing the beauty of Mother Nature
inside, it is engineered to stay as perfect as the day it was installed. The textured wooden surface is warm and comfortable underfoot, with a 0.3mm wear layer that provides added protection against scratches and water damage typical in households. Both ranges have passed the tests for VOC’s and bear the vinyl.dot and SAVA logos for Product Stewardship, and are guaranteed to last for 10 years in a commercial setting or 20 years in a home.

USING COLOUR TO ALTER PERCEPTIONS By Jane Herbst, Interior Decorator, Africote International
Africote recommends rejuvenating rooms and exteriors with a new coat of paint. Using colour effectively will make a space look smaller or larger, change the shape of a space and draw attention to focal points.
24
There’s no better or more affordable way to freshen up rooms and exteriors than with a new coat of paint. Painting isn’t difficult and doesn’t require specialised training. All you need is a little patience, practice, and some helpful advice. Recoating your walls in a different colour can change the personality of the entire room without you having to go to the expense of buying new furnishings. Colour is even more exciting when we realise how it affects the way we see a space. Colour can alter our perception of a room’s size and shape. Different colours and even different values of the same colour have different effects. Lighter and cooler colours tend to recede as they appear further away. Darker and warmer colours advance, in that they
appear to move towards us. We can use this concept to make a space look larger or smaller, change the shape of a space, draw attention to focal points and positive aspects of a space, and hide or minimise the not-so-attractive features. Be creative with what you already have. Upgrade your existing furniture by either painting it up brightly or stripping it bare and adding a paint technique for a more natural look. Once
you’ve
selected
your
colour,
decide on your choice of finish. A matt finish diffuses light, allowing it to hide imperfections on walls. Textured finishes absorb light, creating a sense of richness and depth, but are hard to clean and collect dust. A sheen finish reflects light and can be easily cleaned – this is perfect for high traffic areas.

GLOW IN THE DARK CONCRETE
34
35
An impressive addition to Chryso’s range of decorative concretes is LuminTech, which comprises a variety of different luminescent particles that are applied to the surface and incorporated into the concrete skin. During the day these particles look like natural aggregates but they also absorb both natural and artificial UV radiation. After dark, the particles release the energy to illuminate selected areas of a building or home. LuminTech offers exciting new design possibilities for architects, landscapers and home-owners. This innovative technology can be used to illuminate and enhance the

building at night, or highlight a domestic terrace or garden pathway, or the edges of a swimming pool. The intensity of the illumination depends on the volume of particles scattered on the concrete skin. Available in four colours, the particles are ideal for outdoor use as they are not epoxy-based. LuminTech’s glowing appearance can generally be seen for more than 10 hours after dark, and can be used as luminous nocturnal marking in lowlight areas or even replace electric lighting on cycle paths, for example.

The luminous concrete marking enhances quality of life as it clearly defines spaces, making it easier for users to find their way in the dark.

LIVING ART & LIVING SCREENS USE PLANTS TO ENHANCE YOUR SURROUNDING
There are many reasons to consider bringing plants into your living or working environment. Plants improve air quality by photosynthesising and releasing oxygen into the air, and also act as biofilters for impurities. Acoustics are also enhanced as plants absorb sound and help with diffraction. Plants promote better health & wellness through a spiritual connection to nature which is missing in the modern concrete jungle.
45
LivePicture bridges the gap between plant and art to offer a constant talking point as the arrangement changes over time. Unusual and beautiful, LivePicture brings new life and interest to any bare wall. It hangs on the wall as easily as a painting, and no electricity or water connection is needed. Instead, the living picture has a smart, integrated watering system. LivePicture can be supplied in white, silver grey or charcoal / anthracite. Other colours are available on request. LivePicture is guaranteed for one year (not applicable to the plant cassette)

• The Theater lobby roof is the largest self- supporting fully carbon fibre roof in the world. • The roof has a 155-foot (47-metres) diameter and spans 135 feet (41.1 metres) between the glass walls. • The roof weighs 80.7 tonnes (73.2 metric tonnes), and is large enough to completely cover a Boeing 757 airplane. • With each section averaging 70 feet (21.3 metres) long and 11 feet (3.3 meters) wide, the entire roof assembly can be compared to a network of 44 yachts arranged in a circle. • On-site, the roof panels were re-assembled in a staging area adjacent to the lobby structure and lifted onto the glass all at once.

AUDITORIUM • The Theater lobby draws inspiration from the technology of glass stairs and glass facades developed for Apple retail stores and takes it to a new level. • It is the largest glass-supported structure in the world. • Each 9.8-foot (3-metre) by 22-foot (6.7-metre) glass panel is a four-ply laminate and two inches (5.08 cm) thick. • Sprinkler pipes, power, data, audio, and security run through conduits concealed in the 44 silicon joints between glass panels. • The glazing features the first curved, laminated glass fittings in the world. • The facade and roof are base-isolated from the ground and designed to withstand up to magnitude eight earthquakes.
• The fan-shaped plan of the auditorium and the curving rows of seats were designed to create a feeling of intimate proximity with the person on stage as well as between members of the audience. • Milled from solid domestic white oak, the wooden fins that line the auditorium’s interior help to dissipate sound and also contribute to the warmer interior characteristic of the auditorium. The intermittent fabric panels between each fin absorb amplified sound, limiting reflections back into the audience. They also conceal a network of more than 40 wall- speakers. • The custom-designed leather seating was

eyes of Italian craftspeople. Each piece was hand sanded, finished, and sandblasted before being mounted to check for alignment. • For the complex pieces at the top and bottom of the stairway, the artisans had to take over, manually sculpting the handrail termination and making sure of precise alignments with their machined counterparts. • The stone wall takes only 11 seconds to open
