Super colony discovered

One might not imagine penguins to be dangerous, but then again, you have probably never seen 1.5 million of them breeding at once. According to a new paper published in March, in the journal Scientific Reports, about how many Adélie penguins were recently found nesting in a previously unknown ‘supercolony’ on the seldom-studied Danger Islands. Discovered on an expedition led by researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the unexpected penguin metropolis marks one of the single largest Adélie colonies in the world, and disputes previous observations that the penguins have been steadily dwindling in numbers for the past 40 years.

Starfish can see you!

Scientists have found that starfish, previously thought to largely rely on smell when navigating the ocean floor, actually have the ability to see all around them, even in the deep sea where there isn’t any sunlight. If you were to look at a starfish, there’s a chance the well-armed sea creature would look back at you, though it may only see a blurry version of you, with up to 50 eyes, all attached to the tips of its squishy limbs. Although that might seem like a lot of eyes, starfish don’t have 20/20 vision, said the study’s senior researcher, Anders Garm, an associate professor of neurobiology at the Marine Biological Section of the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark.

A plastic nightmare

According to UN estimations by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Already, it holds five trillion plastic particles, dumped across the world. “Animals big and small are ingesting particles. They end up inside our own bodies. It is ultimately poisoning all of us: humans and fish,” said William Pfeiffer, an environmental campaigner against plastic. In 2017, scientists from the World Economic Forum estimated that 5.25 trillion particles weighing 270 000 tons are currently floating in the oceans. Some eight million tons leak into the ocean every year. That is the equivalent of a garbage truck dumping a full load of plastic into the sea every minute.

Oceans in for a disaster

A study into an ancient climate change event that affected a significant percentage of Earth’s oceans has brought into sharp focus a lesser-known villain in global warming: oxygen depletion, reported, Phys.org. The study was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Dr Matthew Clarkson and his team of researchers, applied a revolutionary new tool to examine how the oceans had responded to climate change in the past. “From studies like this, scientists can describe the link between increased global temperatures and increased global weathering rates, which drive a high input of nutrients into the ocean. This leads to high primary productivity in the oceans and eventually the loss of oxygen as the organic matter degrades by aerobic respiration. This process is similar to eutrophication, which happens in many lakes and rivers due to the input of fertilisers, but in this case it occurred on a global oceanic scale. w w w.lm s m a g a z i n e .c o. z a

Photosynthesis originated a billion years earlier Ancient microbes may have produced oxygen through photosynthesis a billion years earlier than we thought, which means oxygen was available for living organisms very close to the origin of life on earth. In an article in Heliyon, a researcher studied the molecular machines responsible for photosynthesis and found the process may have evolved as long as 3.6 billion years ago. The author of the study, Dr Tanai Cardona, said the research can help to solve the controversy around when organisms started producing oxygen, something that was vital to the evolution of life on earth. It also suggests that the microorganisms we previously believed to be the first to produce oxygen, cyanobacteria, evolved later, and that simpler bacteria produced oxygen first.

Chimpanzees help researchers improve machine learning Researchers at the University of Manchester are using computer simulations of chimpanzees to improve our understanding of how the animals walk, but also the technology we use. The research, published by the Royal Society Open Science Journal, shows how simple changes to ‘machine learning’ algorithms can produce better looking, more accurate computer-generated animal simulations.

Lithium-related discovery could extend battery life Lithium-metal batteries are among the most promising candidates for high-density energy storage technology in an expanding range of digital ‘smart’ devices and electrical vehicles. Uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth, which results in poor recharging capability and safety hazards, currently tempers their potential. New research from Arizona State University that involves using a three-dimensional layer of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), or silicone, as the substrate of lithium metal anode has been found to mitigate dendrite formation and stands to both dramatically extend battery life and diminish safety risks.

Smell can tell Breath analysis in disease diagnostics is a promising research field, and the advances in instrumentation allow the accurate detection of metabolites. But not only the health status of patients, but also the preservation status of museum artefacts could be monitored. In their publication in Angewandte Chemie, heritage science researchers have investigated emissions of volatile organic compounds from plastics-based art objects and provided a first calibration scheme for polymer degradation in museum environment. Katherine Curran and her team, working in collaboration with several museums, libraries, and archives, now introduce a non-invasive gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry detection system for marker VOCs emitted by several polymers contained in modern museum artefacts.

Pain’s origins may be significantly different New research from The University of Texas at Dallas supports the growing consensus that pain begins differently for men and women at the cellular level. Dr Ted Price and colleagues found that a specific manipulation of receptors in the nervous system for the neurotransmitter dopamine impairs chronic pain in male mice, but has no effect on females. Price said that the new findings add to recent research indicating strong differences in pain’s origins in males and females. The results were published in the Journal of Neuroscience. Arium mini lab water system: Maximum performance with minimum space requirements Sartorius offers an innovative system for laboratories needing low volumes of ultrapure water. With arium® mini, the laboratory and pharmaceutical equipment supplier Sartorius offers a very compact ultrapure water system. This newly developed system delivers a flow rate of 1l per minute and is specially designed for ultrapure water requirements of less than 10l per day. This spacesaving unit with a width of only 28cm (11 inches) easily integrates into nearly any lab environment. Feed water needed to produce ultrapure water is supplied by the 5-litre bag integrated on the side of the system. Originally developed for the pharmaceutical industry, this bag is optimal for storing purified water. The closed bagtank system prevents secondary contamination while ensuring consistent long-term water quality. Uncomplicated exchange of the bag also facilitates upkeep of the system and

S TR ANGER THAN S CIENCE F IC TION

The weird and wonderful world we live in A faceless toad

Scientists took to Twitter to puzzle over an unusual sight captured by a biologist in photos and video: a toad that had no face. The toad, a fully grown adult, had a healthy-looking body and legs, but it was entirely lacking eyes, a nose, jaws and a tongue. Instead it had only a stump covered by smooth tissue and a small opening where its mouth was said the herpetologist Jill Fleming, who made discovery. According to ScienceLive, Fleming spotted the unfortunate creature, an Anaxyrus americanus, in a state forest in Connecticut, where she was conducting research on Eastern red-spotted newts.

Why tattoos are permanent Researchers have figured out why tattoos last forever. When tattoo ink is injected into your skin, immune cells known as macrophages attack pigments, which they see as foreign invaders. These pigments are released when the macrophages die. But then, neighboring macrophages attack the pigments, and this process repeats for as long as you live. In a new paper, published in March in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, researchers determined that tattoo pigment is held in the dermis, the middle of your three layers of skin, by a single type of white blood cell known as a macrophage.

A paralysing dare Slugs and snails can carry a parasite that commonly attacks rats, but can also cause life-threatening infections in people. After a teenager in Australia ate a garden slug on a dare, he fell into a coma and later became paralysed from the neck down. It wasn’t the slug, though, that caused these devastating conditions. Rather, a roundworm parasite in the slug, more commonly known as rat lungworm, was the culprit.

Oh deer! A hungry Burmese python in Florida swallowed a whitetailed deer that proved to be a little more than the predator could handle. The unfortunate prey weighed more than the snake. Biologists with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida found the 3m long python in Collier-Seminole State Park. The snake was already distended by its recent meal, but lost its lunch soon after it was captured and moved to an open area, CSF representatives reported in a statement. The regurgitated deer weighed-in at 16kg, while the python weighed only about 14kg.

Why mushrooms make you trip Magic mushrooms seem to have passed their genes for mind-altering substances around among distant species as a survival mechanism: By making fungus-eating insects ‘trip’, the bugs become less hungry, and less likely to feast on mushrooms. This is according to a paper published in February in the journal Evolution Letters by a team of biologists at The Ohio State University and the University of Tennessee.
