INTO THE W IL D: PL ANE T OF THE APE S
A beetles’ best friend
Four of six great apes face extinction
Considered at risk of extinction, hermit beetles need to be efficiently monitored. However, due to their life cycle, standard sampling is unreasonably time-consuming and quite damaging to both the species and their habitat. In searching for a solution, scientists suggested that trained dogs might be more successful.
The Eastern Gorilla, made up of two subspecies, has moved from endangered to critically endangered due to a devastating population decline of more than 70% in 20 years. The Eastern Gorilla, Western Gorilla, Bornean Orangutan and Sumatran Orangutan are now listed as critically endangered, whilst the Chimpanzee and Bonobo are listed as endangered.
Fossils discovered of extinct dolphins Continuing to uncover fossil evidence along the coast of South Carolina, researchers, led by a faculty member at the College of Charleston, have discovered a species of extinct dolphin. The toothless dolphin, which lived about 28-30 million years ago, provides new evidence of the evolution of feeding behaviour in whales (which includes dolphins). The species, named Inermorostrum xenops, lived during the same period as Coronodon havensteini, a species of ancient whale. This was announced recently by investigators at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Charleston in Current Biology.
Wild sheep grazed the Black Desert 14 500 years ago
Euro-devil discovered
Scientists have discovered fossil remains of a new carnivorous mammal in Turkey, one of the biggest marsupial relatives ever discovered in the northern hemisphere. The new fossil is a 43 million year old cat-sized mammal that had powerful teeth and jaws for crushing hard food, like the modern Tasmanian Devil. It is related to the pouched mammals, or marsupials, of Australia and South America, and it shows that marsupial relatives, or metatherians, were far more diverse in the northern hemisphere than previously believed. Targeted forest regeneration among the largest and closest forest fragments in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania and the Atlantic Forest of Brazil can dramatically reduce extinction rates of bird species over time, new research shows.
Gasping for air
Excavations of architecture and associated deposits left by huntergatherers in the Black Desert in eastern Jordan have revealed bones from wild sheep, a species previously not identified in this area in the Late Pleistocene. According to archaeologists, the discovery is further evidence that the region often seen as a ‘marginal zone’ was capable of supporting a variety of resources.

A blueprint for conservation?
Fish are expected to gasp for air and shrink in size by 20 to 30% if ocean temperatures continue to climb due to climate change. “Fish, as cold-blooded animals, cannot regulate their own body temperatures. When their waters get warmer, their metabolism accelerates and they need more oxygen to sustain their body functions,” said William Cheung, co-author of the study, associate professor at the Institute for the Ocean and Fisheries and director of science for the Nippon Foundation-UBC Nereus Programme. “There is a point where the gills cannot supply enough oxygen for a larger body, so the fish just stops growing larger.” M

Agriculture a culprit in global warming
Ancient Greek statues used to be colourful
Although we know them as pristine, white marble statues, the breathtaking statues of ancient Greece were once painted in bright colours and patterns. The original colours were identified using ultraviolet light. Infrared and X-ray spectroscopy helped researchers identify what materials were used to paint the sculptures.
Chromatophores allow animals to change colour Chromatophores sit just below the surface of the skin in squid, octopuses and cephalopods. A bundle of nerves and muscles causes each chromatophore to expand and contract its sac of pigment. Cephalopods might change their colours to communicate, threaten, or hide. Their ability to alter their body’s colour and texture makes them masters of camouflage.
Getting wisdom teeth removed is likely a waste of time Going under the knife to get your wisdom teeth taken out has become something of a rite of passage. Most of us have been there to offer advice and tips to our friends and family who are themselves about to get those stubborn chompers yanked out. Well, turns out all that pain could’ve been avoided. There is mounting evidence that getting your wisdom teeth removed, in most cases, is totally unnecessary. According to a study in the American Journal of Public Health, at least twothirds of wisdom teeth extractions are unnecessary. To be fair, the procedure is sometimes required. Wisdom teeth can become infected, cause cysts and tooth decay, damage other teeth, and just be a literal pain. But if your wisdom teeth don’t already have these problems, there’s no guarantee they will in the future. That’s why these preventative measures are often a big waste of time, money and wellbeing.

Meat lovers swear by juicy medium rare steaks. Others find the ‘bloodiness’ unappetising and opt for well-done instead. While the liquid that oozes out of raw red meat does resemble blood, it is actually just a mixture of water and a protein called myoglobin. And it’s safe to eat. The role of myoglobin is to help carry oxygen to muscle cells. It is naturally redcoloured, which is why people assume it’s blood. Myoglobin does darken, however, when it is exposed to heat. This is essentially why more ‘well-done’ steak no longer looks red or ‘bloody’, despite still containing the myoglobin.
Quantum mechanics is utterly strange, but little by little quantum physicists have been able to use its mind-bending quirks to their advantage. In 2017, a team of Chinese scientists announced that they had used quantum principles to transfer an image from one location to another - without any transfer of particles. The achievement they claimed is known as counterfactual quantum communication.

Protecting our lions
The roar of the wild lion is powerful, and
on a starry night in the wild, can make any grown man shudder. It’s no wonder, fierce, strong and majestic in appearance, lions command respect and have earned the title; ‘King of the Beasts’. Found in Africa, their numbers have reduced by more than 40% over the last two centuries, and it’s estimated that only between 20 000 to 35 000 still roam, mainly in game parks and reserves in Sub-Saharan Africa. They have no enemies, except man, and with human populations growing and taking lion habitat, we may soon reach the point where the African lion

with the widest safe weighing ranges. The SmartGrid weighing pan allows any spilled samples to fall through the weighing pan without affecting the weighing result. The drip tray underneath easily captures any spilled solids and liquids for safe disposal. ErgoClips allow direct dosing of your sample, avoiding sample transfer errors. Significant cost savings can be achieved, especially if working with valuable materials. To overcome this major challenge in analytical weighing, StaticDetect technology detects electrostatic charge on the sample and/ or its container. Amazing science breakthroughs you may have missed
The ozone layer is ‘repairing itself’
Scientists have discovered that the hole in the Antarctic ozone layer is beginning to close. Researchers from the University of Leeds and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US have confirmed the first signs of an increase of ozone, which shields life on Earth from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. New findings, published recently in the journal Science, show that the average size of the ozone hole each September has shrunk by more than 1.7 million square miles since 2000.
Giant pandas no longer endangered The Giant Panda is no longer an endangered species following decades of rescue efforts, conservationists have confirmed. The International Union for Conservation of Nature, which keeps track of threatened species across the world, said it was reclassifying the animal as only ‘vulnerable.’ Panda populations have grown as a result of Chinese government efforts to protect their habitat and re-establish forests. Panda populations have grown 17% in the wild since 2007, thanks to conservation efforts.
