TIP 2:

The wash-hand basin and infection control

Wash-hand regimes and the requisite infrastructure are a critical cornerstone of infection prevention and control in any hospital setting because many hospital-acquired infections are transferred by hand from one person to another. Yet, uninformed wash-hand basin and tap selection or poor installation can actually contribute to hygiene problems and the spread of disease. Figure 1 – acceptable consulting room layout

A clinical wash-hand basin should therefore be preferred over a “normal” wash-hand basin. So what are the distinguishing features of a clinical wash-hand basin? From figure 3, it can be seen that a clinical wash-hand basin does not have an overflow or tap-holes, that it is not a drop-in or counter-top unit. The water stream from the taps must be aimed to avoid falling directly into the outlet, to avoid aerosolisation. Pressure compensating flow restrictors are advisable. These features allow for ease of decontamination and help avoid biofilm developing, which can harbour harmful microorganisms. In at

Hospitals discover the benefits of installing antimicrobial copper components Frequently touched surfaces enable the spread of infectious pathogens throughout healthcare facilities which contributes to the acquisition of hospital acquired infections. To combat bioburden, hand washing and routine disinfection of surfaces are the first line of defense. However, these conventional tools fall short because they are intermittent and depend on human behavior. On average, healthcare providers wash their hands less than half of the times they should, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Infection (CDC). Bioburden can also rapidly rebound on surfaces in the time between cleanings. Antimicrobial copper alloy surfaces can help address these gaps and enhance infection-prevention programs through a systems-based approach. Copper alloys are solid metals with inherent, broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. These versatile engineering materials are fabricated into durable, attractive products like door hardware and IV poles that continuously kill >99.9 percent of pathogens within 2 hours. Copper alloys are not a coating or an additive and the antimicrobial properties do not diminish or wear out. No additional maintenance is required beyond routine cleaning to

remove dirt and grime. Copper alloys are also completely recyclable and are made mostly from recycled content. Copper alloys secured public health registration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2008 after rigorous efficacy testing against infectious bacteria including MRSA. Additionally, wellover 150 peer-reviewed publications have reported on the broad-spectrum efficacy of copper alloys in laboratory, clinical and field settings. A multi-year U.S. Department of Defense-funded clinical trial conducted in the Intensive Care Units of three U.S. hospitals also reported that patients treated in rooms outfitted with antimicrobial copper surfaces had 58 percent fewer infections.

Environmentally sustainable healthcare facilities In 2013, Netcare embarked on developing a comprehensive

environmental sustainability strategy for implementation throughout the Groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hospital, primary care, renal dialysis and emergency medical services operations. In addition to upgrading existing hospitals, environmentally sustainable principles are integral to the design of all new Netcare facilities. By adopting best practices Netcare is focusing on ensuring the environmental sustainability of its operations in terms of electricity and water supply for its highacuity operations. In general, ceramic tiles and rubber or vinyl flooring options are a more sensible choice as they are easier to clean and hard wearing. Seamless floor coatings, laminated flooring or cork sheeting are also worth considering depending on the intended application and budget. Take into account factors such as sound deadening qualities, slipresistance, anti-bacterial properties and longevity. The second design method to comply with the performance criteria is to do a rational design which may only be done by a registered Engineer / Technologist. There are a number of other “principles” which we have now included in the latest SANS10400-P with illustrations, soon to be published. The important elements in terms of hospital drainage design are as follows: 1. Appropriate and good durable piping materials.

2. Appropriate access to and into the

preferred as it allows downstream and upstream cleaning with high pressure water systems.

5. Minimum external drainage piping diameter preferred to be 150mm ID to prevent blockages.

6. Access to be situated where

drains enter/ exit from buildings in order to be able to rod into the building. This access should preferably be a manhole or inspection chamber.
