June 1959
IN THIS COMPLEX AGE of electronic living, jet flight, and nuclear development, I find relaxation and fresh philosophic insight in the simple world of antiquity. To retreat I go to Tsankawi, “the place above the gap of the small sharp cactus.” There, at the threshold to Los Alamos, birthplace of the atom bomb, today’s traveler can enter the strange and utter isolation of the Pueblo Indian past of some 400 years ago. He can retrace footsteps worn deep in soft volcanic rock. … Almost hidden, towers and stacks of futuristic Los Alamos peek from a mesa to remind you that this is really now, 1959!
WILL SHUSTER came to Santa Fe in 1920 from Pennsylvania and soon joined the celebrated “Cinco Pintores.” Much of his early work was done in an automotive covered wagon on a Model T chassis. Today he uses a more modern version for his traveling studio. His works are in numerous public and private collections, including the Brooklyn Museum and New York Public Library. His early paintings of Carlsbad Caverns hang in the reception room there. Shuster annually creates Zozobra, the giant papier-mâché figure that is burned to open the Santa Fe Fiesta.
This month’s cover picture of the “Sky Ride” was made at Santa Fe Basin Winter Sports Area by Harvey Caplin for the State Tourist Bureau. The winter sports area operates throughout the summer months to provide tourists with spectacular views from above 11,000 feet elevation.
BERNIQUE LONGLEY is known for her use of brilliant hues to balance the New Mexico sun and works mainly with figures, using oils and unusual drawing techniques. Clients include Greer Garson and Spring Byington.
