October 1957

The crew is taking Extra West 6152, a westbound Southern Pacific manifest freight train, from Tucumcari to Carrizozo. Train orders are sent by telephone to telegraphers’ stations along the main line. Any changes in these orders after the train has left are relayed by a unique system. The telegrapher types out the orders, ties them to looped strings and attaches the strings to a post close to the track’s edge. As the train whips by, a man in the front end leans out and jabs his arm through the looped string, catching the orders in the crook of his elbow.

The fascination of Barranca is the unexpected. This you’ll find in an old garden where pink roses and gray sage grow together in happy harmony. And at the end of one winding road you come to a small hand-carved wooden gate. On it you read this carving: entren en paz–enter in peace.

Cover: Golden Trail. This month’s cover was made by George W. Thompson on the Aspen Ranch road near Tesuque, north of Santa Fe. The whole area is a magnificent color spectacle in early October.

The back cover of your August magazine shows strangely eroded rocks. The profile at the upper left shows a striking resemblance to Alfred Hitchcock. Hold the magazine at arm’s length for the best effect. —Wm. H.
