A Nantucket retreat offers a fresh take on the traditional Shingle style.

A couple buy a Provincetown cottage they’ve long coveted, and turn it into the chic, charming getaway they always knew it could be.

It’s all about summer at this quintessential Edgartown house updated with a relaxed, beachy vibe.

“ We expected perfection from Woodmeister because of the cost. They didn't disappoint. We were blown away at the quality and service they provided.”

“ No project of this size goes without bumps and

there are very few contractors that are high quality and professional. Woodmeister is both.

We expected excellence and received it.”

“ We've worked with Woodmeister for many years

and know what to expect. They are easy to deal with; the quality is great, and they

reliable sources of very specific pleasures for season after season, even generation after generation. When we hop off a plane or ferry this year in Provincetown or Edgartown, we love the fact that the view isn’t all that different from what we would have seen in 1915. In other words, I shouldn’t worry about repeating myself when I say nice things about beach roses and gray shingles. My task in creating the text for this page, and our team’s task in putting together the magazine as a whole, becomes one of honoring the best unchanging aspects of residential style on the Cape and islands, while seeking out the most useful, beautiful new resources and developments that appear. Avoiding repetitiveness becomes a matter of charting the gradual alterations over time that, in retrospect, are called evolution—giving a nod to worthy innovation, but in particular noticing when it has nudged standard practice onto a slightly different heading. That’s what I hope you will find in this issue of New England Home Cape & Islands: plenty of classic looks leavened with dashes of freshness. That might mean a Nantucket home in the grand manner that is nonetheless subtly adapted to easy modern living (page 58), a company that handcrafts lighting using tools that are recently made yet almost identical to examples from the 1800s (page 44), or a Zenlike dining room that is clearly a product of the twenty-first-century world and simultaneously captures the timeless aura of island scenery (page 112). Evolutionary rather than revolutionary, I’d say, for places where the brand-new is embraced, but always in a way that respects the beauties of the old. —Kyle Hoepner

Repetition or Continuity?

hat to write in an editor’s note is always a bit of a quandary. It becomes harder and harder, over time, to be novel without resorting to topics that may seem annoyingly academic—or worse, pretentious—or falling into the opposite trap by giving too much play to really ephemeral notions, styles, trends, or what-have-you. At the same time, you don’t want to be caught recycling identical thoughts again and again, even if dressed up in slightly different words. Still, many aspects of the good life and of beautiful home design just don’t change all that much from one year to the next. This is especially true when dealing with places like Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, the very nature of which is to seem, in important ways, timeless—that is, to be

No Place Like Home Allen Whiting’s rich, evocative oil paintings are sought after by people who love Martha’s Vineyard as much as he does. ///////////

By Louis Postel

‘‘D

on’t you just love Mon days?” Allen Whiting’s painting buddy Bill McLane would ask that question as they wound their way through the Martha’s Vineyard dune scape on their way to work. How wonder ful indeed, to greet the day observing every nuance of mists and grasses, inlets and shores, farms and boats, as opposed to creeping along through Monday morn ing traffic hell. Whiting enjoys a long history with Martha’s Vineyard. His ancestors arrived on the Mayflower and the family has lived on the island for many generations. The son of Myles Standish built the family manse, which still stands amid the old elms and maples of the West Tisbury property, a stone’s throw from the house Whiting lives in today. And Whiting, who was born on the island in 1946, continues to work the family farm, which he gladly subsidizes through the sale of his art, ABOVE: The Painter—Menemsha 1922 (2012), oil on canvas, 36″H × 48″W. noting that the reverse used to be true for many painters, including his grandfather. “I don’t think about planting corn or grassland management,” Whiting admits. “I think about painting.” For anyone contemplating hanging on after the summer season to try his hand at becoming a professional artist, Whiting’s life seems like the stuff that dreams are made of. Danson and Mary Steen burgen, and Bill and Hillary Clinton all have Whitings on their walls. So do a few of the island’s billionaires, who own houses that boast the kinds of views that Whiting some how makes appear as eternal as they are ephemeral. Interior designer Mary Rentschler is a fellow islander and Whiting fan. “I have a client who is a high-powered lawyer in Washington, D.C.,” she says. “He has one of Allen’s oils in his office, that shows oystering in Chilmark. He says it works like a relief valve in his airless city tower, allowing him to take a breath.” Life is, indeed, wonderful, on Monday mornings and every morning. Not that the life of a Martha’s Vineyard artist is

without its struggles. It is Whiting’s job, after all, and even the best jobs have their challenges. “It’s real life,” he says. “And what people don’t know about it is the loneliness of it all, the struggle. The world’s not clearing a path for you. You have to be out there every day, freeing the hand. Like being a dancer, you have to get out there and dance.” That’s why he avoids working from photographs, he says. “I go out in nature with a raw canvas, hungry to take it all in. Sometimes I actually wish I had blinders, because I’m paying a lot of attention to everything.” Coupled with his ability to look at things closely is his exquisite draftsman ship. “I remember taking a life drawing class with Allen,” says Rentschler. “I used

to lie across my sketchbook just because I didn’t want him to see my work. His was just too good.” Beyond technique lies art. Whiting’s muscularity, his majestic perspectives in incomparably rich, slowdrying oils, as opposed to acrylics, bring the Vineyard’s twilit, offseason towns and its romantic coastlines aproned by sundappled dunes to life. You’d have to go back to Albert Bierstadt and other midnineteenthcen tury luminists for equal scope. Whiting’s workmen and fishermen are just as vital, and even, at times, heroic. The laboring man in New Roof, for example, shares a distinct kinship with the strapping figures of Thomas Hart Benton.

All the same, what makes Whiting more than a mere synthesizer of historic styles is a receding, lonesome quality to his work that is all his own. There’s a sense that not just the Vineyard, but America itself may be fading away, sadly, proudly, while forever poised to somehow reinvent itself. Rentschler often takes clients to Whiting’s gallery and studio. “Allen is funny and humble and never pushy,” she says. “He’s got a lot of his experiments scattered around the studio: paintings on old doors, a series of brick sculptures, and found objects from the ancestral grounds. There’s a chair in the corner that you just know is meant for him to curl up in the sun and study his canvases.” If that’s what Monday morning calls for, then that’s where you’ll find Allen Whiting. •

y typical showroom standards, Cape Cod Lanterns is rather tiny. But treasures abound inside the North Chatham storefront. The space overflows with handcrafted brass and copper light fixtures. Chandeliers and pendants hang from the ceilings; sconces and barn lights brighten the walls; table lanterns and lamps in a variety of shapes, styles, and sizes fill the space. Striking in their hardy, high-quality craftsmanship and rich metals, pieces by Cape Cod Lanterns have a timeless appeal. Very little has changed in the way the products have been made over the last century, says Craig Souza, who, with his wife, Debra, has owned the business since 1998.

The Souzas bought the company s omewhat on a whim. With a background in industrial arts and thirty years of experience in mechanics, woodworking, and metalwork, Craig was drawn to the sale listing for S. Wilder & Co. “I’d never made lanterns before, but I thought I could do it,” he recalls. “My attorney thought I was crazy.” The roots of S. Wilder & Co. date back to 1836. The Holliston, Massachusettsbased foundry that specialized in copper water pumps morphed into a large-scale operation producing a variety of copper and brass products, including lighting. The foundry closed in the 1970s, and the company relocated to Cape Cod and focused production solely on lighting. Once the Souzas purchased the company,

they incorporated the business name Cape Cod Lanterns. After working alongside the prior owner for a year to learn the trade, Craig took over manufacturing the lanterns based on

old patterns and sometimes using tools that date back to the 1800s. “I purchased some new equipment a few years ago; it’s made of cast iron and is virtually the same as the oldest pieces I have. The equipment really lasts forever,” he says. Over time, some new styles have been added to the product line, and in recent years, a large part of the business has been devoted to designing and fabricating custom light fixtures for homes and public institutions all over the country. You’ll find fixtures from Cape Cod Lanterns at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California; at the Chatham Bars Inn; and at The Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown, New York. The company’s lanterns line the private driveways of high-profile people like the Kennedys. Others have

been earmarked for a certain stardom, like those used on the set of That’s My Boy, Adam Sandler’s 2012 movie that was filmed in Osterville. All pieces are handcrafted by Craig himself in his two studios, one in the basement under the showroom and the other in the Souzas’ expansive post-and-beam

barn on the property of their Truro home. Craig’s technical expertise and design skills are in high demand, as a seemingly endless stream of clients request custom designs. All of his lanterns come with a lifetime guarantee, and since the solid brass and solid copper are so durable, it’s typical for pieces to last as long as forty

years before needing new parts. Glass options include clear glass, optic glass, seedy glass, and colored glass, while finishes come in raw brass, antique brass, dark antique brass, raw copper, antique copper, dark copper, and verdigris. Subtle updates have been made to the product line without changing the

timeless allure. The J-arm chandeliers, for example, “looked good fifty years ago, look good now, and will still look good in fifty years,” says Craig. In recent years, some of the Souzas’ customers have started using outdoor fixtures inside their homes. Lanterns double as bathroom lighting or as pendants

over the kitchen island. Other products are designed specifically for indoor use: a lantern modeled after an anchor buoy is fitted as a flush mount; caged mariner lights are used as wall-mount fixtures; shaded sconces are made to hang above a fireplace mantel. The classic onion lamp that serves as the company’s logo remains one of Cape Cod Lanterns’s biggest sellers. It’s easy to understand why. Anchored on cedar posts at the end of a seashell driveway or affixed to a weathered gray shingle by a front door, the fixtures offer fine craftsmanship and beautiful, ageless materials that marry the very best of form and function. • Cape Cod Lanterns

offices in Cambridge and Woods Hole. The incredible salt marsh bordering the site might have prohibited construction, had it not been for the footprint of a preexisting patio. Mercurio’s goal was “to disturb

the fragile ecosystem as little as possible,” she says, and “draw the owner into the environment.” To that end, employing minimal intervention, she blurred the line

between Mother Nature and man. The pool is minus a surround, grass grows in the stone path, and walls are a mix of fieldstone along with native and reclaimed granite. New plantings—except for a parade of lacecap hydrangeas—are also native. In fact, Mercurio even cut back the old footprint of the space, recruiting additional plants to lessen its dimensions. The scenario that presented itself to landscape architect Joe Wahler, a principal at Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Stephen Stimson Associates, couldn’t have been more different. The twoacre Osterville property rests beside the bay, but the yard was cleverly inverted, he says, “with the front facing the water and the back confronting the street.” By portioning the

grounds into rooms flanked with privet, Wahler skillfully bonds the tidy landscape to the symmetrical house, speaks to Cape Cod’s vernacular, and furthers the owners’ enjoyment. The smaller volumes, he explains, “prolong the experiential sequence and expand the impression of open area.” The pool runs perpendicular to and just off the home’s guest/cabana wing. The gate at the pool’s end is on axis with the door of the guesthouse. Layered plantings—including a number of native and deciduous trees to supplement the existing stock—boost privacy. And an elevated, linear flower bed filled with summery blooms such as snowy hydrangeas and shasta daisies softens the granite surround. Set discreetly in the bed’s center is the sybaritic spa.

Portioning a landscape into smaller volumes, explains Joe Wahler, “prolongs the experiential sequence and expands the impression of open area.” Another engaging outdoor space, designed by Kris Horiuchi of Horiuchi Solien in Falmouth, is, as the landscape architect describes, “transitional both in elevation and materials.” The striking residence, by Hutker Architects, is constructed eight feet above the existing landscape. “You step down three feet from the house to the terrace—still high enough to capture water views, low enough to feel immersed in the surrounding landscape,” explains Horiuchi. Wood decks and bluestone terraces that relate to the architecture give way to a smaller, more organic space, where curved walls and railings, along with rounded cobbles (actually washed river stone), establish a glorious connection with the shoreline. The dramatic Nantucket oasis created by local landscape designer David Troast, president of design/build firm Ernst Land Design, appears to be one with the dunes. In actuality, the house and pool are on a hill, with the house in front to protect the pool from prevailing winds. The terrace,

which begins at the home’s edge and extends outward to encompass the pool and spa, is crafted of full-color bluestone. The palette of rusts, browns, blues, and grays speaks directly to the setting, as does the fieldstone wall. Even the rigid ipe safety fence doesn’t mar the houseto-horizon view. “It mimics typical beach fencing but meets all the requirements,” says Troast.

According to John DaSilva, a principal at Chatham’s Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders, a terrace is “truly an exterior living space, open to the sky.” A master at creating just such memorable and functional outdoor havens, DaSilva often takes advantage of the sides of a house. “It’s a way to expand in areas where, due to zoning, building is not permitted,” the architect says.

forged a contemporary outdoor destination that blends with the landscape (seen here at dawn). The inviting spa is set two steps above the pool level, heightening visual interest. BELOW: A pool Kimberly Mercurio designed sits higher than the neighboring marsh to extend the views. “It’s beautiful,” says Mercurio. “There’s plenty of wildlife on a daily basis.”

As illustration, consider the terraces he designed for two Cape Cod homes—one a finely detailed Shingle-style dwelling, the other an appealing, more contemporary abode. Their attitudes, DaSilva notes, are very different. One has a rustic hearth at its heart, with a seating area oriented toward the fireplace. In the other, a private, contemplative space off the master bedroom, the focus is on the water. Still, in each, says DaSilva, “the overhanging roof and the ground plane imply a frame for the view.” And seen from inside, both spaces read as irresistible invitations to the outdoors. • RESOURCES For more information about the design professionals involved in these projects, see page 134.

The

anticipation of building a house can send the imagination soaring in all sorts of directions. To the casual observer, it might seem an impossible feat to design a house that meets all the disparate requirements on the wish list of the homeowners-to-be. The right architect, though, sees the threads connecting those wide-

The sight line from the front door, through the dining room, and out to the sea is breathtaking. Designer Susan Reddick smartly played to the scenery with Lee Jofa linen drapes, a blue Stark carpet, and dining chairs clad in Brunshwig & Fils Oxford blue chenille.

ranging desires and conceives a design that fulfills them in a way that surprises and delights even the most imaginative client. This magnificent new house set along Nantucket’s picturesque shore is the perfect example. Its tasteful, old-school appearance—the twin gables in front and back, the generous porches, and the weathering shingles—may hint at what’s inside. But to really understand the home, you have to cross the threshold. In truth, it might have seemed an impossible request: a retreat that’s spacious and summery as well as warm and cozy. But architects Lisa Botticelli and Ray Pohl understood. “When we first started talking,” Botticelli recalls, “the husband explained he wanted a comfortable place for large groups but not one that would seem vacant when he and his wife were there alone.”

In other words, the owners’ longed-for retreat had to provide a wonderful seasonal experience, easily accommodate their family of five (plus all the friends and relatives who were sure to follow), and also be a warm nest for two. Arriving at the correct proportions and scale to satisfy all these requirements might have been daunting to some, but not to Botticelli and Pohl. And not to Patrick Hehir, whose Nantucket building company is responsible for the home’s impeccable craftsmanship. Quick to credit everyone involved, including the homeowners and interior designer Susan Reddick, Hehir labels the project a meeting of the minds. “Everyone’s vision blended together to make a perfect whole,” he says. Botticelli and Pohl steered the design away from the typically casual beach house, opting for a more

The library offers the best of both worlds: a welcoming fireplace for when the owners wish to be cozy and access to the deck so the sea feels always near. traditional layout and classic detailing—albeit with contemporary variations. There are the expected, time-honored characteristics like coffered ceilings, paneled walls, and arched doorways, but there is also a stunning stacked staircase that sounds a note of modernity. The arches, classic as they are, span generous openings that give an open, airy, contemporary feel to the floor plan. In an unusual twist, the first room visitors spy from the entry is the dining room, which sits at the heart of the house. With its stunning Rose Tarlow table and chairs, the room makes a pretty picture. Visitors are forgiven, however, if they get distracted by the view ahead, where French doors open to a generous porch that looks out over the lawn with its honeysuckle-hedged pool and, beyond, to the rolling ocean. A left turn from the entry leads to the living room and a handsome library, while to the right lies the large, inviting kitchen. Throughout the public spaces, Reddick employed a tailored decor and a serene palette that references the amazing surroundings. The infusion of blue—from upholstery to

rugs—is as fetching as both the sea and the hydrangea-lush landscape. Every space exudes a timeless and settled feel. “I’m very interested in the fine arts, and I look at what I do as also being an artistic endeavor,” Reddick says. “It’s important to me that the interior design enhance the architecture.” Reddick may have dropped in some eye-catching surprises, such as the shell trim on the dining room curtains, but her astute blend of pale walls and understated furnishings ensures the focus remains primarily on the home’s beautiful bones. “I like rooms where not everything is noticeable right away, but after you sit for a while small details are revealed,” she says. Of course, everybody wants to sit in the kitchen, where the top-notch appointments make way for efficient cooking and entertaining. There’s plenty of room to perch along the window-hugging banquette or at the hefty island. Still, in keeping with the original intent, when the couple’s grown children head off and the last guest departs, they can pull their chairs close to the kitchen hearth and feel contentedly snug. The library provides a similarly intimate vibe for whiling away the hours. The hickory paneling— masterfully finished by Wayne Towle of Needham, Massachusetts, in a warm honeyed hue—sets just the right backdrop. A soft, upholstered sofa and leather armchair are paired with a stylish 1940s coffee table discovered at a local antiques shop. And while most of the rooms sport floors of gleaming, antique heart pine, the library incorporates a sandcolored carpet to muffle noise and cushion toes that have spent the better part of a day bare. A second staircase provides the couple with a direct route from the kitchen to the blue-and-white master suite above. Here, should they leave the door to their private deck open, they fall asleep lulled by the sound of waves. Reddick outfitted the couple’s adjoining bath with a striking hanging light fixture by Lucid Lighting and a tiled floor with a lively border mimicking waves. With six bedrooms (five with en suite baths) and two powder rooms, plus a basement bunk room,

powder room, and spa bath, maintaining design consistency could have been challenging. But that was never the case. Botticelli and Pohl’s paneling of the walls or ceiling of every bedroom married with Reddick’s skilled fabric and tile choices—always in colors that riff on watery tints—conjures an appealing and uniform Nantucket flavor. Even the basement follows the theme, beginning with the stairs, which are open and visible from the front hall. “We did that to mitigate people’s fear that this level could prove to be dark and less inviting than the others,” Botticelli explains. And indeed, all the offerings found here—gym, family and media rooms—are a delightful bonus. Still, when the sun shines, everyone heads outdoors to enjoy the tennis court or take a dip in the pool. So paradise-like are the grounds, only nightfall drives the family indoors. Where, with the promise of another island day beginning at dawn, it’s a safe bet everyone falls happily asleep in no time at all. • Resources For more information about this home, see page 134. They say timing is everything. That adage took an ironic twist when it came to Dominic and Christopher’s house hunt in Provincetown. The couple had been vacationing in the coastal community for years when they decided to buy. A search led them to a townhouse across the street from the water; a year’s worth of renovations later, and they were settled. It was May, just in time for the season kickoff. A few months later, their real estate agent phoned. The abridged conversation went something like this: “You know that house you always wanted? It’s for sale.” She was referring to a tiny cottage in Delft Haven that sits apart from the seven other houses that make up the community, on a private beach on Provincetown’s harbor. The location—secluded, waterfront— was special, even one-of-a-kind. Six years earlier, the couple had rented an adjacent cottage. “I had said to Christopher, ‘That is our house. If it ever comes on the market, we have to buy it,’” remembers Dominic.

True to his word, Dominic didn’t hesitate. “I never went into it,” he says. “I just wanted that house.” Before they signed on the dotted line, the couple, who were living and working in New York City at the time, sent Herbert Acevedo as their proxy. The interior designer and friend had renovated their townhouse and co-owns Provincetown-based Shor Design with his partner, architectural designer Kevin

Miller. “It was a bit ramshackle, but the potential was definitely there,” Acevedo recalls. “We paid over the asking price before it even came on the market,” says Dominic. And with that, the renovations began. Architecturally speaking, the couple didn’t change much; the 850-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath floor plan remained intact. Miller was called upon

largely for input on exterior updates, including new shingles, shutters, doors, and windows. He also added two French doors off the living room, a custom outdoor shower with saloon-style doors, and a wraparound mahogany deck that makes an ideal stage for summer entertaining. Acevedo, who had recently finished the couple’s townhouse, visited them in their Manhattan apartment to broaden his understanding of their lifestyle and sensibilities. The takeaway? Both Dominic and Christopher work in the luxury goods industry and acknowledge strong opinions and distinct aesthetics. “Chris is more structured and contemporary,” says Dominic, “and I’m more fancy and Old World.” It was up to Acevedo to strike a balance and create

a sophisticated space that would still read as relaxed. “It’s a cottage on the beach, but this was not going to be a normal beach cottage,” he says. He began with a soft, neutral palette, colors that echo the sea, sky, and sand. “When people come in, they add the color—and Dominic and Christopher have some very colorful friends,” jokes Acevedo. To establish a sense of unity throughout, he carried multiple design elements from room to room. He extended the horizontal wainscoting that adorned some of the living room walls to the rest of the space, save the kitchen. Walls are brushed in Benjamin Moore’s Collingwood, a pale, warm gray that changes with the light, and the pine floors were bleached and then white-washed. Sisal area rugs lend texture and a

“We wanted to bring that incredible Provincetown light indoors,” says Acevedo.

ABoVe: Designer Herbert Acevedo chose bolder colors for the

beachy feel (and hide sand), and blue acts as a unifying accent color. Creating an airy space was paramount in tight quarters. Two new French doors that flank the woodburning fireplace helped to open the living/dining room and join outside and in. The doors are often flung open, allowing coastal winds to flow freely and guests to breeze in and out. “Provincetown is a haven for artists,” notes Acevedo. “The reason is because of the incredible light. We wanted to bring that incredible light indoors.” Entertaining is a central part of the couple’s summer, something Acevedo took into consideration. The goal was a cottage that showed sophistication but wasn’t precious, a space that could be dressed up for

a dinner party or dressed down for a deck party. All of the furnishings were sourced through Acevedo’s nearby retail store/showroom, Shor, and the designer took care to mix antiques with modern pieces, more formal accents with those that are more casual. In the living/dining room, Amsterdam chairs by Hickory Chair, painted an antique ivory finish, surround a classic English-style mahogany table (a nod to Dominic’s more refined aesthetic), while a mirSummer 2015 New eNglaNd Home Cape & IslaNds 83

Above the cabinet, Acevedo hung a mirror with a buttonshell frame to give the room a spacious feel. The streamlined aesthetic that defines the small sitting area carries into the galley kitchen. Acevedo relied on open shelving and symmetry for a sense of space; slate-gray granite countertops and cabinets painted Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue lend depth and conjure the sea at night. Proof that every square inch is utilized in the user-friendly space: the washer/dryer

(note the pop of red) is also tucked under the counter. Acevedo made equally good use of space in the two bedrooms, both of which have en suite bathrooms. He likens the look to that of a “fancy hotel room.” As in the living quarters, the designer mixed and matched. In the master bedroom, a Ficks Reed headboard shares space with vintage nightstands and an abstract painting of bunnies by Manhattan-based artist Hunt Slonem (the couple collect his work). Given the tight dimensions, Acevedo reasoned the guest room needed a punch of color in the form of a custom duvet in Rogers & Goffigon fabrics. He found two “super skinny” antique French faux-bamboo nightstands that just fit, and opted for sconces to free up valuable tabletop space for books and treasures. Nine small, square paintings mounted in a grid pattern depict the shoreline and sky, a nod to the coastal paradise that lies just outside the window. And it’s precisely that ideal coastal location that made Dominic fall in love with the cottage, sight unseen. “It’s a special space and a special property,” says Dominic. And now that the work is complete and the duo settled, the fun comes in the form of frequent deck-side gatherings enhanced by salt air, crashing waves, and raised glasses of rosé. • Resources For more information about this home, see page 134. Wicker, rattan, and sisal are summerhouse staples in this Martha’s Vineyard vacation home that overlooks the water. Designer Parker Rogers softened the formal architectural touches by adding fun touches like a zebra-print rug.

A

good decorator knows his clients. An excellent one will do all he can to put himself in their shoes to conjure a space they can call their own. Interior designer Parker Rogers drew upon his own years of summering on Martha’s Vineyard as he was designing Hilary and Damien Breier’s house. “They are a young, hip family,” says Rogers. “It needed to be as chic as possible and filled with big books and novels you can just pick up on a rainy day. There needed to be TVs in the rooms and a Sonos sound system throughout the house and all the bells and whistles. These are people who like to entertain and enjoy every moment.” It also had to be practical, meaning it could handle the wear and tear of two kids, dogs, houseguests, dinner parties, sand, and the occasional wet towel slung over the furniture. “Everything in the house has a super practicality to it,” says Rogers.

Although he has been coming to the island since he was a child, this was the first time he had an opportunity to work there. Not that this house needed much work. Besides its perfect waterfront location, it had been beautifully cared for. A major renovation, done twenty-some years ago by the Boston-area architectural firm Stirling/Brown and on-island builder Gerret Conover of Conover Restorations, still looks as fresh as it did when it was completed for a previous owner. Whimsical architectural details and accents stand as a perfect complement to the house and its location. Rogers just needed to bring it into the present with a few minor changes. “I wanted it to be a fun, fresh, summertime place for them,” says Rogers. “A zebraprint rug in the living room—why not?” In bringing the house into this decade, bathrooms were the first consideration. With help from Hilary’s brother, Kristian Strom, who acted as an unofficial Summer 2015  New England Home Cape & Islands 91

general contractor, full baths on the first and second floors were redone with new showers, marble, tile, counters, sinks, and fixtures. There was a bit of discussion about whether closets should be added to the bedrooms, but Rogers was adamant about keeping the spaces open. “I will tell you right now: no one needs a closet,” says Rogers. “You’re on vacation.”

In the kitchen, Rogers added a pair of refrigerator drawers with cabinetry above them for additional counter space and storage, and installed a new builtin refrigerator. Some of the doors throughout the house were treated to new framing, and an elevator a previous owner had installed was removed. On the first floor, the onetime elevator space was transformed into a

On the second floor, the shaft created space for a linen closet. The rooms in the 3,000-square-foot house are small, but laid out in a plan that takes advantage of the view from every space. Even from the kitchen, a glimpse of boats churning the water in the harbor can be seen through the breakfast area and dining room. “The kitchen was in nice condition,” says Rogers, but its attractive architectural details were lost in a sea of white. “It needed a pop of color to highlight the vaulted ceiling and beams overhead,” the designer explains. Paint the color of rich milk chocolate provided the contrast that lets the details shine. Rogers gave the dining room a dose of drama with bold blue-and-white wallpaper and dining chairs that wear a glossy navy lacquer. “The walls are paneled three-quarters of the way to the ceiling,” Rogers explains. “I didn’t want to do a flat color there. This paper is happy and beachy, but with a bit of formality. I didn’t want it to be a full-on beach house, because the architectural design of the house is somewhat formal.” The sophisticated look continues in the living 94  New England Home Cape & Islands  Summer 2015

room, where white sofas, rattan chairs, and a zebraprint rug layered on sisal are relaxed counterpoints to the beadboard walls and the fireplace with its classic molding and blue-and-white tiles. “I like to do high-low,” says Rogers. “I love to do really great fabrics even if it’s on an inexpensive piece of furniture. I love doing sea grass on the floors of houses. The sisals are inexpensive, and family- and dog-friendly, too.” The daughter’s room is the only bedroom on the first floor, and Rogers gave it the lavender treatment with an Osborne & Little wallpaper hung horizon-

tally on the wall behind the bed. “I started with the wallpaper,” he says. “Then I found the vertical-striped fabric with lavender for the draperies, and then I painted the walls lavender.” After twelve years of renting houses on the island, the Breiers now call this their summer home. “We Project Team Interior design:

had always vacationed in Edgartown,” Hilary says. “We considered buying somewhere else on the island, but Edgartown has something special.” Oriented to the east and sitting above Edgartown Harbor, the house catches the first light of dawn as it spreads across the water and over the stiff masts of bobbing sailboats. Perched high enough to command a view of Chappaquiddick Island and a spit of beach where boats seem to move in a constant waltz of activity, it is the opposite of looking at an endless horizon of uninterrupted water. “The harbor is just so much more entertaining,” says Hilary. “From our deck we can see friends at their house on Chappy

watching the sunset at the end of the day. We can give a little wave.” At this summer retreat, life is about stress-free days and happy nights, relaxed time with the family and convivial times with friends. “Everyone who comes into the house says it’s such a happy house,” says Hilary. “It has a good vibe and a really good energy,” adds Rogers, “like a lot of people have had a really good time here.” No doubt, there are plenty of good times ahead, too. • Resources For more information about this home, see page 134.

Five Questions

called Pathfinders. These women, who have undergone life-changing experiences like divorce, loss of a spouse, or loss of a job, are given a chance to get back on their feet with the support of WE CAN.

What was it like, bringing together so many creative people to work on the showhouse together?

Bringing creative people together and seeing the respect they have given to this project has been very powerful. Watching them bring the creative process to life— while not even knowing what their “room neighbor” might be doing—has been so rewarding! I have enjoyed working with each and every designer and his or her team. It has been a lot of fun, and we are very grateful for their expertise and generosity.

Is there anything else about the showhouse you’d like our readers to know?

Dan Cutrona

Margie Huggard, owner of Margo’s in Osterville and event chair for the WE CAN Cape Designer ShowHouse that runs through much of June, gives us a brief preview of what to expect from a visit.

What makes Briarwood II in Osterville, the property chosen for the showhouse, particularly appropriate?

The property has a certain nostalgic flair. The homeowner’s great-grandmother first purchased the home and then her grandmother lived there. Years later it was sold. It was only about five years ago that the granddaughter and her husband bought the house again. It is a 1910 Shingle-style cape on a beautiful site on Nantucket Sound, across from the water.

Who are the designers involved, and what are a few of the visual treats design lovers should expect from them?

The designers are from Boston, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Cod. Among other things, those who

tour the house will surely be delighted by the talent of a master painter who has traveled all over the world and is bringing a new look to the 1910 kitchen. Visitors will be exposed to current design trends and will have the opportunity to see talented young designers using midcentury-to-contemporary styles with inspiring art.

The tagline for the showhouse is “Changing Lives Room by Room,” and it is a benefit for the nonprofit women’s service organization WE CAN. Will you tell us a bit about the kinds of programs the showhouse will help support?

This will most likely become an event that happens every two or three years. There were many designers who were interested but who we had to turn away—so at the very least there will definitely be a second Designer ShowHouse to benefit WE CAN. Preparations for this year’s showhouse started more than a year ago, and there has been a lot of heart and soul put into every part of the process. So please come visit! There is a saying about attending design showhouses: “Even if you leave with only one new idea, it was worth it.” interview by kyle hoepner

What I’m Looking At For the landscape architects of Cape Cod and the islands, inspiration comes from visiting impressive public gardens near and far.

“At the Arnold Arboretum in Boston you get to see largerthan-life trees that are bigger than you’ll ever plant in your life. It’s a beautiful arboretum. There’s a combination of huge specimens. It’s very picturesque, and it can take your breath away.” David Hawk Hawk Design Sagamore, (508) 833-8800, hawkdesigninc.com

“The beautiful allwhite border garden at Sissinghurst Castle in Kent, England, inspires me. Its monochromatic palette relies on form and texture dichotomies for structure, while the orchestrated bloom sequence and use of evergreen forms give it balance. The arrangement promotes the unique qualities of each variety of plant while simultaneously creating a seamless tapestry. Embodying these design principles is the goal of all the landscapes I so enjoy creating.” Cammie Naylor Donaroma’s Nursery & Landscape Services Edgartown, (508) 627-3036, donaromas.com

“The garden at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Delaware was intended for a private residence, yet is tremendously daring in scale and in ideas. Experiencing it emboldens me to expand my thoughts as a designer, and helps me create landscapes that have the power to bring awe and joy. It motivates me to engage in long-term vision and infuse my design thoughts with daring possibilities.” Elisabeth O’Rourke Jardins International Nantucket, (508) 325-9911, jardinsintl.com

What Makes It Work The simple lines of this Nantucket guesthouse dining room capture an inner quietude that is just right for the island’s light and landscape. 2. Verner Panton chairs, YLighting’s Notte S5 pendants, and a Lawson console from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams—all sharing swooping curves—are arrayed in a rhythmic spacing akin to that of the windows.

1. Even the wall surfaces are kept pristine, with no crown moldings and with baseboards delineated only by a reveal.

3. A lofty cathedral ceiling only heightens the overall impression of cleanness, light, and air.

JeFFreY aLLen

4. The sturdy, practical look of Crate & Barrel’s Big Sur table harmonizes well with the room’s no-nonsense window casings and bare floorboards.

5. A color scheme heavy on whites and wood tones exudes calm; the occasional dash of primary hues keeps things interesting.

Design ideas in the making

2

My client had two initial requests for the design of this house. The first was that it be nestled carefully among three significant natural features of the site: a large glacial erratic boulder (1), a small vernal pond (2), and a cluster of 100-year-old blueberry bushes (3). The triangle formed by these features defined the axial configuration of the house’s plan and the location of its main living spaces, which were situated to capture the best views of all three. Another prominent presence on the site is an unusual double stone wall—all that is left of an old sheep path that once led into the center of Chilmark. That feature, too, we decided, deserved to remain untouched. My client’s second request was that we implement our shared appreciation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy of Organic Architecture. With this in mind, we carefully selected stone and other finish materials in neutral tones, incorporating large expanses of glass to engage the landscape, and designed lowpitched, stepped roof planes to follow the contours of the land. The result is a harmonious connection between the built structure and its natural surroundings.
