Dr. Jennifer had taught this Human Factors for Design course for more than a decade. It was passed on to me when I joined the University of Arkansas. It is my second time teaching Human Factors at the University of Arkansas.

As a practitioner, I simply had to determine which design was best for the client, but as an educator, I had difficulty determining which direction to teach, since I was aware that not all students would become interior designers. As human factors have traditionally been closely related to psychology or anatomy, and industrial engineering and UX design have become dominant, it is impossible to cover everything in a semester for students who lack basic background knowledge. In response to the difficulty, I adopted a simple approach. “Return to the basics.”

If interior designers and architects are responsible for designing spaces, what is the purpose of the design and what are people expecting from us? In what ways can human factors assist us in meeting these objectives and meeting these expectations? I ask my students these questions at the beginning and end of each lecture. Overall, I was interested in discussing the elements of interaction that must be tailored to a specific purpose and meet people’s expectations. The purpose of the series of discussions was to lay the groundwork for analyzing and understanding the interaction between behavioral and environmental factors. Although it takes time to achieve results, you will eventually see the quality of your performance reflect the effort you have put forth. By putting in as much effort as possible, you will be able to design faster, more accurately, more effectively, and more efficiently. As well as emphasizing the interaction of behavioral and environmental factors, the course required students to complete 12 exercises and a final project. In addition, students had to write a few essays. All of their outputs are included in this book except the essays.

During my student days, I was not very satisfied with the first portfolio I developed by simply binding output files for the purpose of job preparation. I used to feel that it would have been better to prepare the portfolio in advance during the break, but every break is short and I needed time to rejuvenate my mind and body after completing so many tasks during the semester. Sometimes I am unable to recall what I have learned or what I have missed. I have occasionally been unable to locate my output files. Consequently, I found myself holding a portfolio that had no relation to my interests or passions. Hopefully, you will find this publication helpful in retrieving what you have learned as a designer and preserving what you have accomplished.

Lastly, I would like to express my appreciation for everyone’s efforts last semester. Having the opportunity to combine the results of everyone’s efforts into a book made me very happy during the writing of this book.

#What problems did you encounter in the studio or outside?

I think juggling the course work was difficult for me this semester. Time Management, sometimes the amount of work placed on us both in studio and in other classes feels like it’s too much, and I don’t have time to get it all done. I try my best to manage my time wisely while also giving myself needed breaks.

There’s nothing necessarily studio or class specific - I think just my adjustment back from Rome and working part-time caused a problem with my efforts and I wish I had managed my schedule better.

Some problems that I encountered in studio were simple time managment problems. A few skill issues here and there were present.

It was a very hectic semester with very fast paced deadlines. What I encountered inside of studio is that I actually had a really good concept but didn’t have the time to implement the concept becuase we only got 5 week in the model. Jennifer kept adding things to the schedule and so then we hardly got anytime in the model to actually develop our concepts

Balancing a job while also taking studio is difficult, do-able, but difficult. It also makes my focus fly away from classes outside of Fay Jones. One main problem I encountered during this class was finding buildings or projects to analyze that I actually liked. This wasn’t a huge problem but I did spend a lot of time looking for projects that I wanted to spend my time analyzing.

One thing I say I encountered was motivation. I often knew I had work, but often put it off till the last minute. It got better as the semester went on, but at the beginning after our long break, it was hard to get motivated!

Time management. On almost all of the assignments and classes, I was not able to proceed on time

I found this semester to be difficult in the sense that the lines between digital learning and design learning are not blurred enough. There’s not a seamless flow between the two, and the support given to the digital area is not enough for it to coexist with the design work. I’d love to see a more intentional integration of BIM technology, more BIM resources in and around campus, and a larger emphasis on how design is shifting as we move through the digital age.

I feel like this semester has been the hardest mentally and in regards to motivation. The project this semester was not one I was as excited for although I loved my design in the end the concept of a tool library was very niche. I wish we has done something that could familiarize ourselves with different sectors in the field like aviation, healthcare, education, or retail as we will be most likely specializing in one of these areas in our future and this being our last large interiors project. I also don’t feel as though I received as much support through this semester and often felt discouraged by some of the professors which lead to having less motivation for the project. Along with that the time we had on this project felt very limited and left little time for growth as many of us were just trying to get it done.

It was a huge time comittment and I had to plan accordingly. I encountered the problem of time management and how I should allocate my time and energy. I did not have any outside problems. In studio, I felt like we spent too much time making conceptual collages/ models/ and photoshoped illustrations that did help some, but didnt fully influence our design. It felt like busy work. I like the process of conceptual thinking and execution however, I would have rather spent more time in revit.

I understand that when we dont spent enough time thinking conceptually, us students usually conform to the rigid parameters of revit. However, with the deadline for final review happening two weeks early, i would have rathered spent a couple more days in revit.

Also, there wasnt clear understanding of how the final portfolio progression would affect the grade of our final submission.

I found it hard balancing school work load on top of other classes and outside of school responsibilities.

Finding a project that fit my beginning view and fitting the question given for some projects. I was able to overcome this by finding something that I thought worked and making it fit.

Overall this semester was tough for many students, including me, as studio assignments were strenuous at moments and everything seemed to go by far too fast. I struggled to maintain a work-life balance as I tried to keep up with studio, progress my required research as an honors student, find an internship, and maintain a relatively good standing in all of my classes.

I am a 4th year so I wasn’t in the studio attached with this course. However, my option studio was really great and I thoroughly emjoyed it. I think my time management skills could have been better. There was not a push to do better or to push myself past my limits.

Finding motivation.

my biggest challenge in this class was changing the way I work. Being a second-year architecture student that is not in the studio I feel that I should have waited until I was more experienced in my design education to complete this course. Each assignment took me well over 12 hours to complete because I did not know how to use Illustrator effectively and I was limited to Rhino to do all of my assignments which I think really hurt me in this class. When I tried to learn Revit and Illustrator to do these assignments it backfired and I couldn’t complete the assignments on time.

I can say after this class I do know how to use Illustrator and Revit way better than I did before so that is a good outcome for this class. Had I known how to work with the software effectively I would have done very well in this course.

This semester I very much struggled with balancing my mental health and my school work. Some phases of life are harding than others and this one has been a struggle for me as college is coming to a close. I have been working on my time management skills as well as slowing adjusting to the real world. I have tried my best this semester alothough I know I could’ve done more in this class. I still want to give myself grace but at the same time keep pushing myself to be better in the future.

This semester I really struggled with the layout of the course. We had a weird layout that made our mid-review super late in the semester, two weeks later was final review, and two weeks after that was a final presentation. I wish our semester took on a normal layout, I think it would have helped me further my thought process behind different design elements that ultimately felt incomplete at the end.

This semester was definitely the hardest semester I have had yet. Studio was very challenging and I really struggled with my professor’s teaching style. I also struggled with some chronic health issues this semester, but am really proud of getting through this semester and am looking forward to a fresh start next semester.

I had no major problems in the studio this semester. I got to collaborate and meet new people in my section. We were able to use a more creative and hands-on approach this semester which I really enjoyed. My favorite part of the semester was creating collages to evoke the feeling I desired for each program in my library of things project.

I stuggled to find a balance between studio and my other classes. By always prioritizing my studio work, which I do not regret, I tended to neglect my other classes, resulting in a huge amount of work to do at the end of the semester.

The biggest problem and/or struggle I faced this semester was time management. I had a lot going on this semester outside of school, I was applying for internships, developing my capstone prospectus, planning a semester abroad, and all my weekly coursework. It was a lot to juggle and I found myself having to accept defeat more than I wanted to, but there was a greater lesson in all of it and I am proud of myself for getting through a challenging semester!

Time managment because of my capstone, i didnt think it would take so much time

#What did you learn from this class?

I learned many human factors relating to the physical and psychological aspects of design, and how to implement positive features for a variety of market sectors including education, hospitality, etc. I was taught how to utilize sequence diagrams and discovered many academic references I can look to for aid in the future.

I learned that good design should be human centered. Good design is thouroughly researched and focused on human experience.

I learned more about how the design of a space can make someone feel and how space can create interactions between people.

I learned the importance of spatial sequence and how to use programs effectively to illustrate my designs. I learned to better manage my time and I have started paying attention to the spaces that I am in. I am able to better appreciate the design of spaces and how the design affects how you move through space.

I learned that there is a lot that goes on within a space such as the factors and what affect it can have on a person who is in that space. It is something i’ve been conscious about but not enough until now.

I was able to research different types of design and study the function of how people move and interact in the given space. I really enjoyed getting to further my research into accommodating and including neurodivergent individuals in the spaces I design.

I learned a lot about human factors and what impacts people and how. I learned why lighting and acoustics are important in a space. It also helped me to notice why I gravitate towards the spaces I enjoy the most.

I got lots of learing from this class. Especially, I was really surprized about his effort. So, I started to think that I also have to spend more time on my work.

I learned about how the built environment effects people in many different ways. A space can effect the mental and physical health of people. A space can also be perceived in many different ways and it’s up to us as designers to create desired experiences.

I learned that even the smallest of things that are design effect the people that are going to occupy the space.

I learned a lot about the effects of interior environments. Interior architecture has always interested me and I sometimes wish I had majored in it (I am an architecture student). I find it fascinating how our environment has such a big effect on our lives and well being.

I learned that we many more connections to the spaces around us then we realize. Even just walking down the road, we make connections to exteriors, taking short glances inside, and actually stepping into the space. The spaces we create are apart of many stories, and we can make it memorable. Another thing I learn was that there are so many factors in design that is not just codes, regulations, and aesthetics.

For this class I learned to always consider basic human factors in the environment. Even if it seems small it is important for the design and experience of a space.

An extra level of consideration when thinking about architecture. It was also interesting to study all of the different typologies.

So many things about how all of these factors in design weaving and working together are crucial to the feelings and things that are wanted or needed in a built environment.

I really enjoyed the lessons taugh in this class. I believe human factors are some of the most important factors to consider throughout the design process. I learned a lot about how much the sequence of a space matters

as well as the many diferent components that are under the phrase “human factors”. I learned that designers must create spaces that are logical and functinal while also being extremely aware of human well-being, psychology, comfort and health.

I learned to look deeper into design and how every place has a connection to people. It was fun deciphering a sequence of which people would travel when going through a building.

The main reason I chose to pursue a degree in Interior Architecture and Design is because I would get to design at a human scale. This class reinforced every aspect of what I wanted to explore when first starting this program. The Human Factors course made design seem very real. Sometimes in studio or other classes it’s very easy to get lost in the digital world, but the Human Factors course served as a reality check.

I’ve learned small things that can make design more enjoyable for people based on how humans live.

I understood how important it is to design with users in mind. Ive always known it was important as an overall concept, but the details are what really make a design worthy or not. I remember learning about design for the hard of hearing and how there were different concepts applied in order to ease the users interaction with the building. Since people that are heard of hearing communicate with their hands and rely heavily on visual cues, it was important to avoid distractions when traversing through the building. To combat distractions, ramps are used more frequently than stairs. This allows the users to communicate effectively looking at eachother while walking instead of having to watch out for level changes, etc. Also, mirrors and reflective surfaces are implemented so users can be aware of their surroundings.

These are just some of my favorite the ways that i saw human factors affect the way a space is designed.

I learned that there many aspects that makes a good or not so good space. It’s not solely off of aestetics, but how we as humans can improve our way of living.

What each space I design should consider in regards to the user. And how much consideration the space should go under in order to fully satisfy a user’s needs.

There are a multitude of factors that go into creating a space both in reality and fiction, and those factors should not be ignored.

I learned the value of in-depth research, analysis, and study of human behaviors amongst a variety of sectors. Every single decision must be backed by significant reasoning for the overall design to be effective and serve the people that inhabit that space.

How to make your design cohessive and meaningable.

This class helped me focus on remembering the human experience when designing. Sometimes I think it is easy to forget that what we design on the computer would be created in real life in the professional world. This class helped keep me grounded and reminded me of the importance of the user experience of a space.

A lot of detailes that go into designign a space and how human factors affects the space

I learned how every factor effects a space and should be carefully thought out when designing for human needs.

I learned about how every space we encounter in our daily lives has a design purpose behind it. Each space is specifically designed to allow and persuade people to feel a certain way when inhabiting that space.

#Is there anything you would like to share with the future students?

Don’t procrastinate and start the assignments the day they are presented. also, take the assignments as an opportunity to change the way you work for the better.

Visit Jinoh during office hours! He was a great help to me when I was seeking resources for my studio project and I wish I had visited more. He cares about his students and always has a smile on his face.

For future students, I would reccommend staying up to date on weekly assignments and do not wait till the last minute to complete the makeup assignments.

Go to Class!!! It is so much easier to complete the weekly assignments if you are in class every day and learn the material.

For future students I would encourage you to be curious in the class and major. Curiosity is how I survived and learned more.

Definitely do all the assignments. In the long run it will be easier on your mental calendar than writing essays during finals.

Go to class and pay attention, even if it’s in the morning. As much as morning classes suck, it’s an important lecture.

Take the time to actually do research and understand human factors. It is much more important to how we design a space than one may think. Spend an extra hour researching spaces and understanding how someone would navigate through it.

Do not wait to do assignments until Sunday night!

Stay ahead of your work and manage your time wisely.

Do your work on time and make time for yourself!

The professor remembers each student perfectly.

Do all the assignments even though it’s a lot at times if you don’t it will all pile up at the end. Also if you are in the honors section you have to do 6 essays I was not aware of that until mid semester when everything with studio was piling up but if you do all the assignments you won’t have extra essays to write to make up assignments.

Start the assignments eraly because they do take a little time

Starting earlier on assignments makes them easier and you can spend more time engaging with them as opposed to rushing through them and it makes the course more enjoyable.

Do not procrastinate. The assignements take longer than you think. When you do the assignments, try to actually learn from them.

Go to class- its not that hard.

Try to avoid doing the make-up assignments.

Don’t get overwhelmed and no matter how stressful life gets, always try your best! Your best is better than nothing.

Be bold. Design for the world you want to see, and don’t be afraid to find the answers no one is giving you. Go big while in school, you can always make things smaller. Listen to feedback, and analyze it before you apply it. Find the message your professor is trying to give you and add it to your toolbox. Be smart, be proactive, be you.

I know a lot of people who had to write make up essays. I personally don’t like writing. Just do the assignment even if you have to stay up late or wake up early.

Keep up with your assignments. Talk to professors when you have issues. They want to help you.

I am very pleased with the staff at Fay Jones. Ive had every opportunity to ask for help if i needed it. Every professor Ive had in this school has been helpful and understanding.

DO NOT PUT THE WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS OFF UNTIL SUNDAY! (Like I did unfortunately, lol). The assignments will take you longer than you think, so be proactive and save Jinoh from the surplus of essays submitted at the end of the semester:)

Go to class it is the easiest 10% of your grade, its nice to be able to just sit in the class without having to worry about notes or tests also just turn in the assignments it doesn’t take much time and its better than writing a paper.

I would like to say to future students to allow themselves to take a breath. As well as give themselves grace and forgive themselves when they are trying their best.

Don’t skip any assignments, it is a slippery slope!

GO TO CLASS AND DO YOUR WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS

I think something I’d like to share is going to class with an open mind and be willing to understand every ounce of information because whether we know it or not; it affects us also in our day to day life.

Stay on top of things! It is easy to get behind and let things pile up but if you work hard with a shcedule and finish assignments on time it will be a great semester.
