INSTRUCTOR’S NOTE
It was a semester with the beginning of 2020 filled with hearts. However, we met an unexpected difficulty, and I finally started making this book at the end of this semester. First of all, thank my students who completed the semester. Also, thanks to all reviewers for sharing their insights and comments in all three reviews. The theme of this design studio was residential space. The dwelling typology has been established according to the needs and wants of the residents’ social role as changes in societies. In other words, most people of the same social role stay in a specific and similar housing type. However, even in the same housing type, the residents reflect their tastes in the space and live in various forms. Therefore, in this design studio, students researched the student housing where they stayed and then proceeded with the process of realizing their own ideas based on the research outcomes. This book contains the journey of the students’ processes and outcomes.
Making this book is a way to review my instruction through my students’ processes and outcomes. By looking at each phase of the process and its outcome, I feel like I might have had to help or teach my students more at some points. This book gives me feedback on student achievement. Also, I hope to help 1) my students apply what they have learned to the following years, 2) the future faculties in charge of the students I have taught to understand the students’ outputs, and 3) my future students understand my expectations. Lastly, I wish this book can be used as a base for creating my students’ portfolio. Many thanks to my students, reviewers, and colleagues for giving me this opportunity at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Jinoh Park, Instructor

I have always been told in my life that I have a lot of patience. My philosophy is that if it’s not a dire need situation then I’m not going to cross that bridge until I get to it. One day at a time. Due to this attribute I can typically always find a way to help people. I always find the time to help others when I can. I tend to be a selfless person and I always put the thoughts and feelings of others before my own. I always strive to be a better person and really push my boundaries to broaden my horizon. This also means that I am my worst critic. I always try and stay humble though. I never try and put myself in a place where I am being cocky or having too much pride. I try to present myself as a trustworthy person. I never want anyone to feel that I am too intimidating or rude. I try and make it clear that I am here for you, anything you need. Being passionate about something is how I tend to look at my work and other things happening around me in my life. When I am passionate about my work it often leads to the best results. It lets my creativity flow, which makes for more interesting projects. It also leads to thoughtfulness in each project. I like to think and always strive to go above and beyond with everything that I do. This means perfectionism is key. Everything must be perfect always and if it’s not then it needs to be further worked on.

Current Housing Home Advantages - Super cheap (no rent) - My own space and bathroom - Space for everything - Laundry in house - Not many extra expenses - I get to see my family all the time - Close to my job - Safe Disadvantages - oo far from campus (30 mins; 45 - 50 with traffic) - My bros like to scream and be in my business - Lots of gas money - My bros eat all my food
Better Housing The Woodlands Advantages - My own space; my own bath - Laundry on site - I get to have my pet (cat) - Live with my friends - “Cheap” - Less gas money - My bros won’t eat my food
Disadvantages - Not as cheap as where I am now; I’ll have to pay rent and utilities, as well as extra costs. - Farther from my job (might need to find another one) - My roommates might eat my food.

Even less than $600 / person: Super Efficient (not a lot of utilities bill). Solar panels for electricity, recycling water.
●
Storage space / closet space: Walk-in closets, storage rooms for number of people living in each unit. Even trying to make the bedrooms large (comfortably fit a queen size bed) then that would make for added space.
●
Amenities: Courtyard area, dog amenities, community events, keyless entry (security), assigned parking garage parking.

Contemporary building style: designed for comfort, open floor plan, designed feature for indoor outdoor living, updated appliances, stone top counter tops (marble, quartz, granite)
●
Number of bathrooms: Bathroom with every bedroom
●
Walking distance: Not being close to UT campus so the student can walk to school. However this also makes for quieter living.
●
Storage space / Walk-in closet: The Knox Ridge Apartments make use of providing space for individual storage per person, whereas the Henley and Society 865 does not.
●
Bathrooms: Bathroom with every room.

the apartments.
Living room / Patios and Balconies (Indoor/outdoor space): The Henley has patios and balconies in all the room layouts whereas Society 865 and Knox Ridge do not. In all the layouts the living room size is large enough to seat 3 people comfortably. All of the competitors are more than $500 in rent (not including utilities): The Henley ranges in price a lot, right now it's cheap but come summer it will be more expensive. In Society 865, prices range anywhere from $550 to $700 depending on # of rooms in unit. Knox Ridge is a flat fee of $669 per person no matter the number of rooms in unit.
●
Amenities: Pool area and great amenities are available for guests.
●
Laundry: All have laundry rooms.
●
Cost of living: Cheaper rent as the number of rooms in unit increase.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester I plan on taking a bit of a break for the summer. However, I have a few individual projects planned to keep me busy and to help me build on what I already know and just improve. I hope to better my past projects from the year and make them better for my portfolio. One thing that I am also planning this summer is to submit the team project final design into a competition. My partner and I plan on improving on our design from the final review and submitting the project in the coming weeks. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I honestly have always been a little tough when it comes to working in groups. I always find that I am either too stressed with my group mates, or they are frustrated with me. Because of this I have always worked alone for the most part. But, architecture has pushed me to work with other people and collaborate more. I found the team experience this semester to be rather fulfilling. My partner was very easy to work with and also helped to make everything we had and more for final review. Much of what we had wouldn’t have been possible without a great partner. I have learned that I actually really enjoy working in a team and building off of each others ideas to create something truly awesome, at least in my eyes. I’m excited for the coming years and hopefully I will be able to work in a team again. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? I didn’t really like the assignment because I felt as though we didn’t do enough research on how technologies affect the home. I would have liked to incorporate this design concept into our residential spaces for our final project. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? The main hurdles that made the design more challenging was the entrance in the center of the room and also the size being so small. The goal of the design was to make a micro-style student housing and the main concept was Emergence. To fit in to these criteria we worked with as small as possible square footage size, as well as the central entrance. Externally, the main difficulty was figuring out how the entrance and the stairs worked with the design. We wanted to keep the stairs in line with the rest of the structure. What type of residential place would you like to design next? My favorite student housing is The Woodlands. I liked this one the most because it was more affordable than a lot of the other housings we looked at this past semester. I also appreciated how it had everything that one could need in an apartment when living away from home. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? I would describe a well-designed student housing to be something that is efficient when it comes to the needs and wants of a college student. Even if a space is smaller, if it is designed correctly it could have everything that is needed and more. Having a space that adjusts to the needs on the user is another important aspect of a well-designed student housing. Every year, hundreds of students move in and out of various dorms and apartment buildings for college. This means that there is o one design that will suit everyone. However, if the design naturally has all the basics that an average college student needs, plus room for the student to change the space based on need then I believe that is the most efficient and well-designed space for student housing. Another aspect of student housing that makes it better for college students is affordability. Most college students don’t have a lot of money to spend since they are already ankle deep in student loans. To combat the price, a smaller space, along with removing the inessential amenities from a building or space, makes for a cheaper living situation for students. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? I think building evidence for design through research means to research every possible question that could come up in your design. Research everything to the finest detail and the more you research competitors and similar projects, the better your design will become. What would you like to tell your instructor? I would like to give my instructor a huge thank you! You have taught me so much this semester and I will bring it with me in the coming years and improve upon it. Every semester has its ups and downs, but you honestly made this semester one of the easiest I’ve had thus far. I appreciate everything that you have done for me, in teaching and in design development. I hope to have you again! Thank you!

Fundamental Living
What is your plan after this semester? After this semester I plan to update my projects and other work for my portfolio and then rest. I plan to do a lot of side projects during the break so that I have more to add to my portfolio as well. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? Working as a team this semester was a great experience, especially with this type of project. I never would have expected the outcome that we got, although I had no doubt it would be great. Working in a team forced me to get out of my comfort zone and embrace new ideas that were not my own and that I had not thought through before. If given the chance to work in teams again I would definitely do it again. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? There were not too many problems that were encountered throughout the semester. There were definitely challenges in trying to make things work correctly and produce the best work to the best of my capacity. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? The Woodlands is probably one of my favorite that we studied and researched because they have units with multiple levels, which works out better in my current lifestyle. What type of residential place would you like to design next? Designing a house or downtown apartments would be interesting. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? Well designed or good student housing to me is something that is affordable and does not have unneeded or unnecessary amenities or benefits. The layout must also not be too large considering most time is spent at school. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? It means to prove why things are how you designed them. To back up and give a reason to the question of “why not this or this? It justifies the design. What would you like to tell your instructor? I would like to say thank you for being patient with my limited knowledge in the field of design and thank you for guiding me to research and learn new things. Thank you for challenging me to accomplish my ideas and for providing me with new knowledge on software for design and precedents to study and more. I really enjoyed being in your studio class and I enjoyed being pushed to do new and different things. I am very grateful to have been your student and for the great things I have learned from you.l I look forward to working with you more in the future!

Thank you!

With the world we live in today it is hard to find certain traits in people, so when I find these aspects in people I try my hardest to connect to them in some way because i demonstrate the same traits as them. An example of this is the fact that I am truehearted, if one gets to know me they will quickly realise that I am the type of person that cares for a person and never want to see them hurt. With this comes the fact that I am reliable and honest, standing by someone’s side through it all as a way to show that I am the type of person that has dedication. Along with this I am also the type of friend that is there whenever a friend needs and will always remember there birthday because of my organization skills and innovative ways to keep up with important fact or dates.this is how I show endearment towards a person. I am knowledgeable that I sometimes care to a fault, giving people second and tenth chances out of a sense of fairness but at some point it befores unfair to my feelings. I am not a people person however I do care for a small amount of people who I can trust. The good ones create an idea of unity and they make me feel included.

What is your plan after this semester? My plan for after the semester are to complete a few summer classes and get ahead in a few of my general requirement classes. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? It was great working alone, I was able to make the design choices that I wanted. If the chance came around again I would work by myself so that I wouldn’t have to depend on anyone but myself. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? At the beginning stages of my design I struggled to develop a concept and implement it into my design. I wanted to make sure that my concepts were seen in every aspect of the design. In order to fix this I had to change parts of my concept and edit my design. Overall I think I was able fix this problem by taking a step back and analyzing what design concept i really wanted to highlight. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? I think my favorite student housing is the woodlands, I bais because I will be living there next year but it feels like home. I can customize the bedroom however I want and put my own personal style into it. What type of residential place would you like to design next? I would like to redesign my current house and add in elements that I believe will make it more suitable for a five member family home. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? I would describe a well-designed student housing as having storage, a low price, a spacious kitchen and an element that could accommodate entertainment and group gatherings. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? I think this means looking back old projects, researching what was successful on what could have been improved and implementing that into your design. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you so much! I really enjoyed this studio and it was probably one of my favorite studios because we not only got to do residential but we also got to express ourselves completely. I believe that as designers it is important to find your voice and learn how to incorporate it into designs, therefore I really liked this studio because it taught me how to do that. I had fun and learned a lot through the process, especially in the research portion of the project. Some of my friends also stated how thorough my research was and stated how it made my design that much better. I feel that what I have learned this semester will help me in the future getting a job in the design field, thank you.

I am a number two on the enneagram and I feel as though that means I am a person who is driven by emotions. I think that is why I am always caring for others and putting their needs before my own, and I believe that makes me a very thoughtful and faithful person. I also believe that it is very important to live life purposefully and understand that things are not just given. So, I try and live life with a passion that shows who I am and what I believe in. I also strive to be a joyful person and see the glass half full. Another important aspect to me is being sincere and truthful person. I believe that you gain trust from others when it is present.

Mind
Within my design process, I strive for comfort. I try to be mindful of the many different people inhabiting a space while I’m designing so that everyone can feel welcomed. With my projects, I am devoted to achieving a sense of purity through the use of my creative process. I am a very visual person and by seeing different styles and schemes, I can imagine a space that is cumulative of elements that are important to me and that would make me feel comfortable. My integrity also reveals itself within my process; efficiency and creative skill are characteristics that are very important to me. I kind of just let my imagination run wild. I want to accomplish a deeper stronger sense of trust between my abilities and what I am able to produce, though. I know that I must improve and escalate my abilities to truly prevail and accomplish my design goals.

What is your plan after this semester? My plan after this semester is to take a break for summer and enjoy some much needed time with family and friends. I will also be preparing to come back in the fall for third year. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I really enjoyed working in a team this semester! I think it is a great exercise, because in the workplace there will be a lot of projects when we will have to work with partners. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? Internally, we had issues with our bedroom door placements. We finally placed it at the 45 degree angle to maximize space. Externally, was working with our balcony size. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? I really like redpoint! What type of residential place would you like to design next? I would love to design a large house. It would be fun to do the exterior on a home as well! How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? I think a well designed student living space would include private and social areas, a lot of storage, and an affordable price. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? Showing evidence is showing why you did what you did in your design. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you so much for everything you have done during this studio. It was a challenging time for the second half and you were always there to help us out and I really appreciate it! I also loved that you integrated new programs into the studio. Thank you Jinoh!!

What is your plan after this semester? I plan on continuing my education in design courses over these next few years at UTK. I want to keep researching and finding new things about the programs we use. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I worked in a group and even though it was a bit difficult relating information to each other, we worked really well together. I would do it again because it also helped even out the workload. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? We encountered issues with interior structures like door placements and open spaces the most. Through trial and error, we were able to figure out our mistakes. Externally, the balcony in our design was our biggest problem; just figuring out how we would make it accessible to each room and the living room was a challenge. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? My favorite is the Woodlands, where I live now. What type of residential place would you like to design next? I would like to design a hostel that resides in a city. I think it would be an interesting challenge with lots of fascinating research. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? Good student housing would be a low cost space, with all basic amenities for living like a decent sized kitchen and a washer and dryer. Also incorporating some green space would add to it. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? I think it means to build a steady foundation of knowledge upon your project. If you’re designing a building in a certain space without researching certain factors first, it will likely fail. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you Jinoh for all your hard work and patience with us! And also thank you for giving us the creative freedom to design whatever we want. I have learned many useful skills that I will carry with me into the rest of my career as a designer. Thank you so much!

Being authentic and unapologetically yourself and being able to express yourself, leading to creativity, is very important to me. I also believe it is important to find your personal passion to create self-determination in the things you do everyday. I also believe everyone should strive to be passionate towards others, genuine, and welcoming. Along with this, do things for others in a selfless way and be intentional with the things you do. And lastly, honesty is very important to maintain relationships and to have a guilt free conscious.

I believe love and respect are the most important things when it comes to your encounter with someone. Love is the foundation of all things, all the words chosen. If you don’t have love then you don’t have kindness, thoughtfulness, mercy, friendship and the list goes on. Consistency is the foundation of friendship, pursuing that relationship day in and day out. I believe being creative is beautiful, a way to express yourself at your best.

What is your plan after this semester? To continue into my third year classes and prepare in the summer. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I enjoyed working as a team but I would rather work alone on school assignments. What is your plan after this semester? I plan on taking summer classes. I want to graduate in December of 2021. So i will be studying abroad next summer. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I loved working in a team. I think Lily and I got along great, were good friends and we fight like sisters lol. But it was challenging at first to work together when the virus stuff began but overall I would do it again. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? It was hard to first to encompass both of out concepts. But we figured it out. Although our space might not be for everyone, it was based on our lifestyle and we loved it. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? Apartment style. I was prefer living in a house near campus ideally. What type of residential place would you like to design next? A town home. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? Community living with private spaces. Most students love socializing but need alone time to recharge. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? Research is so important when designing. You have a “why to every decision that is made. This way you are better to give reviewers or clients facts to back up decsions. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you so much! I really enjoyed your class. You pushed me so that I could become a better designer. I really enjoyed the projects that were designed. I am glad I got to explore Revit more. Thank you for a great semester. I’m sorry that it was cut short! Have a great summer.

I always do my best to be intentional in my words and actions, because that is what makes a consistent person that anyone can rely on. One of my main life goals is to be purposeful and make a difference in the world. I pride myself on my ambition and being determined because this is how I accomplish my goals and set new ones, I refuse to settle and being my best self always. My parents instilled in me from an early age to be humble; I know that I am very blessed in a million different ways and I remind myself of that fact every day. My best quality that I possess would be empathy, because I truly care for others and have a compassionate heart. I love to give back to my community, participating in service work and overall having an altruistic and selfless outlook on life because I have been so impacted by giving to others whenever I can. I describe myself as a visionary, because I have a glass half full attitude and believe that everything has the opportunity to be better.

What is your plan after this semester? Use my summer to explore some of my interests such as graphic design and refine my skills in interior architecture to prepare for my third year How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I loved working in a team! It was great to have someone to bounce ideas off of constantly and it made the project feel more realistic. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? It was difficult in the beginning phases trying to use the research to formulate the floor plan, but it got a lot easier the more time we put into the project. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? I think the new Aspen Apartments are really nice. What type of residential place would you like to design next? I would like to design a mixed use residential building. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? The architecture is informed by the students’ daily tasks and their needs must be addressed first and foremost. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? In order to create a space that its users deem successful, researching the demographic, site, and other contextual evidence is the key stage in the design process. What would you like to tell your instructor? I would like to thank Jinoh for pushing me past my limits and opening my mind to so many different design solutions. I now feel that I have a completely different design thought process and I am very grateful that he was able to foster that in me.

Existing and working within the field of interior design requires me to meet strict deadlines in a consistent manner. It is important that I take my time with this, but I also should not rush to complete tasks in a last minute fashion. This requires sacrificing some of my personal time for the sake of honesty and consistency. Reworking my natural inclinations is a feat of strength, but I’m slowly getting there. It is vital that one looks back at their accomplishments and gives themselves credit. You must be kind with yourself and others. Not everyone is in the same position, and the field of interior design requires great empathy, but it is important to hold yourself and others accountable in group settings. I constantly remind myself of these things.

What is your plan after this semester? I plan on looking for an internship in my hometown and improving my skills in revit and autocad. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I really enjoyed working as a team. Depending on the project and the partner, I would work as a team again. However, I enjoyed the freedom of working by myself as well. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? With classes moved online, it was extremely hard to focus on accomplishing goals on time. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? Learning more about about student housing options allowed me to find the best possible housing for myself next semester. What type of residential place would you like to design next? It would be interesting to design a townhome or a beach-style house. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? Good student housing meets all the needs of a student while encouraging the student to maintain a strong academic record. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? Building your design through research makes your project outcome much more strong, protecting it from criticism. What would you like to tell your instructor? <3 thank you for doing your best this semester.

Finding purpose through work is difficult to do, but over the years, I have gained experience and understanding of what skills are necessary to lead a purposeful life. Leading a purposeful life begins with kindness. Kindness to others is a gateway to empathy because when one treats others with kindness, one can begin to understand that everyone leads life with different perspectives. With this understanding, someone, like myself, can not only bring directness in conversation through knowledge, but also open-minded ideas about different kinds of people to design work. Empathetic knowledge can easily guide the way to obsessive work. When one truly understand what the purpose is behind a project, one can spend more time making little, but important decisions. Having respect towards one’s own work is an important aspect of finding purpose to design. Respect comes from being confidence in decision making skills, therefore having a higher understanding of one’s own work.

What is your plan after this semester? I’ll be trying to find a job in Nashville this summer and returning to school in the fall. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I prefer working alone, but I know at an architecture firm, I’ll have to work in a team. I’m hoping to do as many independent projects as possible while still in school so I can show off my individual portfolio. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? I had a hard time designing for such a small space and finalizing my design. I get so many ideas that it’s hard for me to choose just one. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? My favorite is still where I live, which is Laurel Station because if is spacious and close to campus. What type of residential place would you like to design next? I would like to design a single residential home next. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? I would describe it as meeting the needs of its occupants. Designing with students needs in mind is necessary. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? It means being able to backup decisions made for a project through research you’ve done before hand. Thinking about each element in ones designs specific purpose. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you for giving your full attention to your students and projects. We can really tell the amount of time you put into our class and we really appreciate it. Thank you.

When it comes to my personal brand I am always focused on my goals. I prefer to take artistic and organized approaches to my work, that includes a focus on purity and perfection. Continuity is something that I consider very important when it comes to creating a brand, as having a sense of continuity in your work is essentially what a brand is. You must also take care in creating a brand as it is a reflection of yourself to others. Having an entrepreneur’s state of mind when creating a brand is also important when creating the brand for business purposes. It’s also important to keep an open-mind when working with a brand and to have malleable ideas to accommodate different issues.

What is your plan after this semester? After this semester I will be spending my summer working towards getting a minor in industrial design, and then continue towards my degree in interior architecture in the fall. How was it working alone or as a team? If you get the chance again, will you work alone or as a team? I chose to work alone, and I was glad to be able to go my own way with my designs and not be limited by a teammates design style, but as the semester progressed I realized that working in a team would have allowed more complexity into my design and would have made it possible to accomplish more work and more refined work for the final. If I had another chance I would have gone with being in a team. What problems did you encounter in your design internally and externally? In my design I struggled with ensuring that all my design features had a purpose and had research to back them up. I wanted to ensure I wasn’t including design aspects simply because I liked them. When looking at the feedback from the reviewers, I think I had a problem with completely conveying my concept, because the reviewers understood it but I don’t think they understood it at the level that I wanted them too. What is your favorite student housing in Knoxville (after this design studio)? I would say my favorite housing is actually the housing that I chose as my top competitor to my housing design, and that would be One RiverWalk. I enjoy it because of its location, variety of layouts, and their larger sized units. What type of residential place would you like to design next? I would love to design a residential space like a house that is very self sustaining, like some kind of house off of the grid or maybe a bunker of some sort. I think that would be a very interesting project to work on and would require a lot of research and creativity to accomplish. How would you describe a well-designed or good student housing? For me, a successful student housing is one that offers something new and interesting that can contribute to its success. I think in the world of student housing there’s room for a lot of innovation and improvement. What do you think it means to build evidence for design through research? To me it means making decisions within your design and having solid evidence and reason for its presence in the design. I found research based design to really help my process, because although creativity is vital in design, you can draw design aspects from your research rather than purely from the creativity in your head, making the design more practical for the real world. What would you like to tell your instructor? Thank you so much for this amazing semester, this studio has been like no other that I’ve had before. I appreciate the abundance of knowledge that you have shared with me and my peers, and I know that what I have learned this semester will be so helpful to my design work in the future. You were able to give me a much more real world and practical view on my work, which will be vital in my transition from school to going out and getting a job in the design field.
