Dear Readers, Fairly soon the leaves will begin to fall, evenings are already darker and there’s a chill in the air – so if you’ve nothing to do and you like a good read, stay in the warm and enjoy this magazine. There was a staggering response to our Althorp Food & Drink Festival competition and this time round there’s a meal for two and free tickets to a Christmas Fair to be won. On a serious footnote, please try and support out advertisers if you can - without them our very popular magazines would not exist.

Did you know as many as 7 million people in the UK are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure? It’s recommended that everyone over 40 gets their blood pressure taken by a nurse or doctor as part of a health check to assess their risk for getting cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a major risk factor for a heart attack or stroke. Blood pressure is recorded by 2 levels: Systolic (higher number) – the pressure the body pumps blood around the body when the heart beats. Diastolic (lower number) – the time in between heart beats when the heart is at rest. Causes of hypertension: Genes and lifestyle factors like smoking, stress and lack of exercise all undoubtedly contribute to hypertension, but being overweight and the food that you eat is a major factor too. Foods that increase the risk of hypertension: 1. Salt - Has been linked with hypertension. However the sodium to potassium ratio is the one to look at, eating high intakes of salt and low levels of potassium are highly linked to high blood pressure. Restriction of salt alone has been shown in studies to not be effective unless you are increasing potassium intake as well. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables will increase potassium levels. Avoid all processed foods as these are high in sodium. 2. Caffeine - Can cause a short, but dramatic increase in your blood pressure, even if you don’t suffer from hypertension. If you do have high blood pressure you should try to reduce the amount of caffeine that you drink. I recommend my clients to not have more than 2 cups of coffee a day and these should be consumed before 12pm. Always drink good quality coffee too as poor quality contains anti-nutrients such as moulds which may be having a more negative impact on your health than the caffeine. 3. Sugar - Eating too much sugar can lead to weight gain over time, which puts you at risk of high blood pressure and many other health issues. 25% of people with type 1 diabetes have high blood pressure and 80% with type 2 diabetes.

High Blood pressure? by Becca Mclachlan

4. White refined carbohydrates - Such as white rice, bread, pasta, potatoes and pastries. Instead opt for healthier options like sweet potatoes, quinoa and brown basmati rice. 5. Alcohol - Drinking alcohol can raise blood pressure to unhealthy levels. Having more than three drinks in one sitting will temporarily increases your blood pressure, but repeated binge drinking can lead to long-term increases. Foods that help to lower blood pressure The following foods and drinks are recommended for lowering blood pressure naturally: 1. Bananas 2. Flaxseed 3. Kiwi fruit 4. Avocado 5. Sweet potato 6. Red bell pepper 7. Tilapia 8. Broccoli 9. Kale 10. Quinoa 11. White Beans 12. Natural Greek yogurt 13. Hibiscus herbal tea 14. Cranberry juice 15. Beetroot juice Taking charge of your blood pressure does not have to be difficult. It can be as easy as going back to the natural foods you were created to eat. If you need help losing weight and improving your health my Metabolic Booster programme will show you the way. By eating clean, reducing your alcohol intake, decreasing stress and adding some physical activity into your life will help to improvement not only your blood pressure and weight but your overall health too! NB: If your are on medication for blood pressure you should speak to your GP before making any big changes to your diet as improved diet and weight loss can help lower blood pressure dramatically. www.becca-mclachlan.com www.metabolic-booster.com becca@becca-mclachlan.com Becca Mclachlan Fitness Studios, Brampton Heath Golf Centre, Church Brampton, Northampton NN6 8AX 4

the time, but the wounded German he allegedly had in his sights was Adolf Hitler, then a 29-year-old dispatch runner with the Bavarian army. While Tandey’s heroics and initiative at Marcoing earned him the empire’s highest military honour, the Victoria Cross, the question that had to be asked was ‘did he let a much bigger prize slip away?’ One thing for sure was had he known how events would unfold, the shape of world history would have been very different. It’s one of the most tantalising what-ifs in history: What would have happened if Tandey had killed Hitler in World War I when he had the chance? Henry Tandey was born in Leamington Spa in 1891 and as a teen he found work stoking boilers at a local hotel. He then joined the British army with the Green Howards regiment in 1910. He served in South Africa and Guernsey before the First World War broke out in 1914 and his regiment was called into action. Meanwhile, in Munich, Adolf Hitler was a disaffected 25-year-old who jumped at the chance to serve with the Bavarian army. As an unsuccessful artist with limited job prospects, he volunteered for service in the early days of the war - despite being an Austrian citizen who had moved from Vienna the year before to avoid the Austrian draft - ending up in the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment. Both Hitler and Tandey saw their first action of the war at the first Battle of Ypres in October 1914. The latter’s role at Ypres was immortalised in a painting (pictured above) by war artist, Fortunino Matania. Someone had sketched the Green Howards soldiers helping their wounded comrades evacuate a makeshift hospital. In 1923, the regiment commissioned the artist to make a painting of the scene, featuring Tandey in the foreground carrying an injured soldier on his shoulders. E

Every picture . . . As he surveyed the ruins of his Coventry home, Henry Tandey couldn’t help casting his mind back to an incident that allegedly occurred at the end of the summer, back in 1918. On November 14th, 1940 over 400 Luftwaffe bombers launched a surprise attack on Coventry causing mass devastation. It has been claimed that the wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill knew that the city was to be targeted by the German Luftwaffe, but chose to do nothing because it would have alerted Adolf Hitler to the fact the Allies had recently cracked the Nazis’ top-secret Enigma codes. Hitler himself was the man centred in Henry Tandey’s thoughts after a chance encounter near the French village of Marcoing, Cambrai during the First World War. As the story goes, on that day, Tandey’s platoon were under heavy fire until he spotted and knocked out a German machine gun position. The Brits were hopelessly outnumbered, but Tandey bravely led a bayonet charge during which he was wounded twice but refused to give up. Tandey and his platoon of nine men took 37 German prisoners! As the remaining Germans fled, one of them caught Tandey’s attention. He was wounded and unable to run. Tandey took aim but compassion set in – he couldn’t bring himself to shoot an unarmed man! Tandey didn’t know it at 13

urination, memory loss, stroke, depression, diabetes and heart attack. Having also read that people over 35 are at higher risk, I was feeling fortunate that nothing serious had happened to me up to now as I’d been living with the issue for over 10 years.

Something to consider

I continued researching and found a case study published in the ‘Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine’ that suggested wearing a simple chinstrap is the single most effective treatment for snoring and OSA. Better than airway pressure devices, better than nasal strips, better than anything! Up till then, the only facial aid I’d ever considered was a special mask that blocks out my wife’s moaning . . . . once I’ve managed to stretch it over her face!

The mask . . . As a married man in my thirties, I was desperately trying to deny that I had a snoring problem! The fact that I was enjoying a good night’s sleep seemed to cloud over the regular complaints from my wife that it was like sleeping with a suction pump made and tested by Darth Vader! There were even rare occasions where I was asked if I’d swallowed a jack hammer before I went to bed! Comments like this require one to stay cool, so I apologised and told her that I was simply . . . nasally repetitive!

Although I didn’t particularly fancy going to bed looking like Arsenal goalkeeper, Petr Cech, or Exeter winger, Jack Nowell, I decided to give it a try as I’d just caught my other half looking online at another very effective cure – a gun!

The problem being this denial was in complete ignorance of a potential serious health risk, a risk I’d done nothing about for a long time.

Ok, so it wasn’t the most attractive night time fashion accessory ever, but incredibly it CURED my snoring and sleep apnea - instantly!

During research, I was shocked to read that ‘sleep apnea’ (or OSA as it is also known) can be deadly if not treated. While most people think of snoring as just a minor aggravation, my investigations showed it can be hazardous to your health because for the majority of noisy sleepers it’s related to ‘Obstructive Sleep Apnea’ (OSA). People who suffer from OSA repeatedly and unknowingly stop breathing during the night due to a complete or partial obstruction of their airway which occurs when the jaw, throat and tongue muscles relax, blocking the airway used to breathe. The resulting lack of oxygen can last for a minute or longer, occurring hundreds of times each night.

The chin-strap, which is available from a company called MySnoringSolution, works by supporting the lower jaw and tongue, preventing obstruction of the airway. It’s made from a high-tech, lightweight, and super-comfortable material. The company’s website claims that thousands of people have used their chin-straps to help relieve their snoring symptoms, and all report better sleeping, and better health overall because of it. Mine’s still on trial . . . .

Thankfully, most people wake when a complete or partial obstruction occurs, but it can leave you feeling completely exhausted. OSA has also been linked to a host of health problems including: acid reflux, frequent night time 17

Out for a pint in old St. James . .

The ‘Red House,’ formerly the ‘Red Rover’ is now known as the ‘Sevens Pub and Restaurant.’ It was completely rebuilt in the 1930’s and replaced a delightful wayside house. In Fred’s younger days he recalled the long wooden forms for seating outside in summer months, which, in particular, was a favourite meeting place for many nearby allotment holders. There were a large number of allotments in the area including holdings near Windsor Crescent, St James Working Men’s Club, Weedon Road, Georges Close (Ellesmere Avenue area) and Franklins Crescent field.

Over past years, if you took a mosey around the pubs in Jimmy’s End, you may have come across some interesting places and characters. Sadly deceased, local historian, Fred Golby wrote about such occurrence’s in his book ‘A History of Old Duston’ and although the dates of existence are a little vague, for those who are not aware, it’s worth recalling parts of his memoirs.

Nightmare on Gold Street

As a boy, Fred recalled an old Boer War Veteran, Jimmy Ayres who had a small holding near Mill Lane and used to hawk vegetables and fruit around St. James by horse and cart until he was well into his 70’s. He’d call in at one public house after another for ales and refreshment. One Saturday morning, having almost completed his rounds, Fred stopped him as he was coming out of the ‘Forge Hammer’ and asked for a lift to his father’s nursery in Mill Lane. Soon after climbing aboard he noticed that Jimmy had fallen fast asleep. The horse slowly took him home, where his gate was open and not until the horse stopped inside did he wake up! As Fred got down from the cart he told Jimmy that he hadn’t stopped at the ‘Red House’. Jimmy claimed that his trusted old horse would have noticed if the doors were shut as it was around closing time (2 pm) and just kept going. Fred Golby will never be forgotten.

In 1878, ‘The Forge Hammer’ was built along with the first part of Alma Street, St. James and it helped to quench the thirst of many a Stensen’s foundry worker. Drink was also fetched by young boys for the ironstone workers in the Weedon Road pits situated on the edge of the ‘six fields’ as they were then known. The Inn was also used by furnace workers from Hunsbury Hill after a 12 hour shift and the long trek back through the fields. Not too far away was ‘The Florence Nightingale’ in Devonshire Street. Primarily regarded as a shoeworkers haunt, in Fred’s younger days it was known as ‘hell’s kitchen’. In particular, he recalled the old gas lamps, the heavy laden smoky atmosphere and the bar with its sawdust spittoon all the way round the room. The bar was demolished in the 1950’s along with part of Alma Street to make way for a block of flats. In the vicinity, at St. James Square, you’d find ‘The Tram Car’, then still part of Old Duston parish. Mr. Tipping was the landlord in the 1930’s and was a great angler. He attracted many local followers of the sport when he kept that pub. In those days, many passengers coming back from town via tram would simply ask for a ticket to the ‘tram car’, even though St. James would be displayed as the destination on the front. Many years ago St. James End was a hamlet around Mill Road, but later the term became the ‘norm’ for the whole of St James. On the opposite side of the road was the ‘Foundry Arms’ on what was regarded the old Spencer’s land. Today it’s still there, but known as the ‘Foundrymans Arms’. 19

A recent study has shown that women are hostage to hair removal spending an average of £8,000 per lifetime on defuzzing. A whopping 88 per cent of women will spend four months of their entire lifetime removing unwanted hair - don’t be one of them! As the UK’S longest established Laser Hair Removal clinic operating since 1997, the Northampton Laser Clinic is an advanced skincare clinic providing clients with an outstanding range of treatments in a professional and private environment. Our clinic is run by a team of qualified nurses and we use the ‘gold standard’ in lasers for Laser Hair Removal. The process uses pulses of laser light to damage the hair follicle - resulting in removal of hair in the area of choice. The procedure is fast, relatively painless and has become the industry standard in many clinics for unwanted hair removal. Unfortunately, traditional hair removal routines can be tedious, painful and expensive over time. Shaving may last a day, waxing a couple of weeks, but none of them last forever – and

Laser Hair Removal therein lies the true beauty of laser hair removal from Northampton Laser Clinic. Your first appointment will be a 45 minute consultation including a test patch, which is free, to check the suitability of the skin. All subsequent test patches after initial consultation are also free of charge. We operate a novel system where you pay by time at the clinic. This may enable you to have several small areas treated in one appointment. For further information please check out our website: www.laserhairclinic.co.uk We look forward to seeing you.

Russell Lewis Still working at the club today!

What was your path to becoming a professional footballer? I started playing for my village team, Gwynfi FC, when I was 15 years old. After a very successful season I went pre-season training with Everwarm (Bridgend) and enjoyed two great seasons. My fellow centre half, Carl Slee, who used to play for Swansea City knew ex-international, Mel Nurse who sent me to Swindon Town for a trial. After six weeks I was offered professional terms by their manager, Danny Williams. Fortunately my apprenticeship as a bricklayer had just ended so I jumped at the opportunity. Tell us what you remember about playing in Swindon’s epic League Cup victory over Arsenal back in 1979? At that time, Swindon had a very successful team and I got the chance to fill in at right back due to a number of injuries. The draw at Highbury brings back great memories and Arsenal had an excellent team including internationals like Liam Brady, Willy Young, Frank Stapleton and Pat Jennings. My job on the night was to keep Graham Rix quiet. The team rose to the occasion especially in the replay at Swindon. I will always remember that 4-3 victory because my family came up from Wales to watch the game and we had a great evening afterwards. How did the move from one County Ground to another County Ground come about? In my final season I missed the last 6 games after a nasty ankle injury, during which time the manager was looking to bring in fresh legs. Clive Walker, the Northampton Town boss invited me for a chat and I was impressed by his plans and enthusiasm. In your time at the Cobblers, what fellow professionals stood out and why? After a good start we really struggled and at one stage we were very fortunate to stay in the league. Graham Carr took over in my third season and bought some excellent non-league players who were full of enthusiasm and brought skill to the team. We finished in a respectful sixth position. Two players who stood out were Trevor Morley, a striker who ended up at West Ham and our keeper, Peter Gleasure who’d been at Northampton longer than me but showed that hard work and belief enabled him to play consistently at a high level. 22

C

What are your greatest memories whilst wearing a Cobblers shirt? In my final season we had an excellent 5-0 victory away at Peterborough. I also scored with my left foot from the half way line at Stockport County (it was a clearance)! After life at the Cobblers what clubs did you play for before hanging up your boots? I enjoyed four successful seasons at Kettering, as well as working as a bricklayer alongside my brother. I moved on to Merthyr Tydfil while studying at college. After 2 seasons I signed for Rushden and Diamonds but it didn’t work out due to a recurring injury and my successful application for the ‘Football in the Community’ job at NTFC. After last years award tell us how you got involved with multi-disabled football? While playing for Northampton, I went on a lifesaving swimming course where I met Kevin Rootes who worked at Shire Lodge Day Centre. He invited me along to do some coaching with the football team. This has developed over time and we now have over 80 players who attend our friday evening session at Moulton College. Can you tell us more about the current structure of multi-disabled football in the county? We are very fortunate to have a dedicated number of people who give up their time to support the Multi Disabled Football Club. Some are coaches and parents of players who attend, other coaches volunteer because they really enjoy working with people with disabilities. We have a very successful Under 16 team who are county champions. At adult level we have the high ability championship level, then the league and the conference, which is for lower ability players. We have a ladies team, who are looking for more players and we are looking to have an under 12s team to play in the Northants league. The players come under PAN disability, which includes players with learning difficulties, autism, downs syndrome, cerebral palsy and partially sighted playing together. We also have a downs syndrome team. If anyone would like more information regarding the disability club please email: russell.lewis@ntfc.co.uk

The great lunchbox dilema!

Friendly & Reliable Service All vehicle repairs carried out... Brakes Exhausts Servicing Clutches

Thinking of healthy and exciting pack lunch fillings can be a daily challenge, especially if you can’t envisage your child happily trotting off to school with a box of sprouting mung beans! As a guideline, according to many experts a balanced lunchbox should contain: starchy foods like bread, rice, potatoes or pasta; protein foods like meat, fish, eggs or beans; a dairy item, like cheese or yogurt; and some vegetables or salad plus a portion of fruit. There are plenty of carby options that kids should love, which help add a bit of variety into your child’s diet. In warmer months, try making them a simple pasta or rice salad or even a two bean salad with finely chopped tuna, ham or chicken. The beauty of this type of snack is that vegetable or salad pieces can be disguised in the mix which is a good way of ensuring your kids are getting that important nutrient. You’ll find plenty of recipe ideas on the internet and if you are worried about keeping your child’s lunchbox cool then why not freeze an extra bottle of water overnight to work as a cooler! That way, there will be a refreshing afternoon drink as well if they want one! If you’re tight on time how about an easy-tomake cheese ploughman’s lunch or a chicken guacamole wrap? Or, how about double decking slices of bread to make a sandwich more exciting. This also gives you license to slap in some salad that may otherwise get frowned on. Greens are said to improve alertness in younger people, which can come in handy in a double maths period. Remember, by not bowing to their crisp and chocolate demands you really are doing them a favour - in the long run!

The whole concept takes quite a lot of getting used to, and the few tutorial times need to be used to the best advantage. Most degree courses have at least some tutorial time set aside for small groups of students to get together with a tutor to discuss any problems they may be having with their work, and also to go over problem sheets, so help is at hand if needed. However, it is essential to prepare for these sessions beforehand by making notes of any problems or misunderstandings that may have arisen after lectures. The tutor should be able to clarify most points in the tutorial, but if there is anything he or she is unable to discuss there and then, they can always help by referring someone to one of their colleagues, or arranging a meeting on another day. The greater volume of work that is expected at University depends on the course but a general guide to working hours is as follows: . About one hour for each lecture per day, to recap and clarify notes. . A couple of hours each week on tutorial preparation. . A minimum of five hours at the weekend to do problems sheets and any set homeworks from the previous week. Try to take advantage of what free time you do have to the full. Remember: a high stress level rarely induces good work. Using a free Wednesday afternoon (set aside by most universities as an afternoon off, for sporting activities) to play sport is a great release from tension. Neglected work can very easily pile up. An essay may have been left until a couple of days before it is due in, and is followed by something unexpected for the same deadline. This will cause needless over-stressing and can end up being poorly done. Always complete work that needs to be printed on computers well before its deadline, as it is extremely likely that others will be working to the same deadline, and it can take up to six hours (sometimes longer) to get it printed.

Knuckling down at Uni Some students employ a strategy at university for coping with work that allows them maximum free time for sleeping until tea time arrives and the bar at the students’ union opens. This technique, commonly known as work avoidance was conceived shortly after history’s first university took in its students, and has been diligently developed to its modern state of perfection by students across the ages. It is worth noting that those students incorporating this tactic into their life at university are invariably those found sadly bereft of a degree certificate after three years; such is the efficiency of the technique. Seriously though, the approach to work at university is very different from what would be expected at a school sixth form or a college. It is important to recognise that the emphasis is on self-motivation and expectation of the student doing a great deal of work outside of lectures. Quite often, lecturers give out work that they don’t expect to be handed in for marking so it is essential to realise from the start that the work still must be done in order to gain a thorough understanding of the subject being studied. Compared to a school, a university has few tutorials, concentrating on lectures consisting of large groups of students who simply listen to a lecturer talking for an hour or two. Very little input is expected by most lecturers from their students who would be best served by taking brief notes to aid a broader write up afterwards. 28

Our primary objective will always be to enhance the infrastructure around our area so that our quality of life is maintained. Our main focus at the moment is the Northern Orbital Road. We have met with Highways officials and we will be speaking at the NCC Cabinet meeting on 6th September when the Orbital Road, and proposed routes, will be discussed. STOP PRESS - we have just discovered that the Council are back to the drawing board to find a more suitable route due to vicinity of Boughton Park and the need to find a flat part of the A508. We shall still be speaking on the 6th and will report back via our Facebook Page, Streetlife and next magazine. But during the summer we had a few “You said; We listened; We did” activities. Most noticeably, we took on the project of improving the state of Kingsthorpe Cemetery. It was overgrown, with bad grass cutting, overflowing bins and just no care! After much effort on our part, we managed to get action. QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS Before

Time to put your garden to bed for the winter

I hope you have had a wonderful display from your garden this summer? As the days begin to draw in, it is time to begin to think about putting the garden to bed for the winter. The last of the fading summer bedding needs pulling out and composting. Replant your summer hanging baskets with pretty Violas or Pansies and trailing Hedra (Ivy) for that winter splash of colour. All your plants that are not frost hardy will not survive our winters outside so will need to be brought in where possible. Pelargoniums (aka Geraniums) are not frost hardy so will need winter protection to survive. To prepare your plants for the winter, they need to be allowed to dry out in their pots and then with clean sharp secateurs cut them back hard.

the plant right down to the base of the plant. Use a garden fork to dig up the whole root system of your Dahlia, here you will find several swollen roots all connected to the base of the plant. You need to keep it all together but you can brush off the old compost from around the roots. If any of the swollen roots come away from the roots system you can discard these as they will not come to anything on their own. However, in the spring when they begin to show signs of new shoots and roots of their own then they can be divided.

Cut them back to about 3inches and then take off any leaves that are left, you should be left with just stumps. They will look dreadful but by removing the aerial part of the plant you are removing the need to water them and all that material would offer perfect conditions for botrytis (grey mould) to grow during the winter months. These ‘stumps’ now need to be kept frost free and dry for the winter, so no watering, not even a little bit! You are putting them into hibernation for the winter. They do not need light so a garage will work or a spare room. The most important point is to keep them dry and frost free from here on. Do not cover them in plastic to give them extra frost protection they will just sweat in there and the dampness will encourage grey mould which will just kill them off.

For now, your root system needs to be placed in a box or a large enough pot and covered with compost, this compost will prevent the swollen roots from drying out over winter. They now need a frost free place to survive the winter months. Remember, having got them through the winter don’t be too keen to plant them out in the spring, wait until the last of the frosts have passed. Penstemons will still have a few flowers left on them but as they begin to fade away resist the urge to cut the whole plant back. Penstemons benefit from a March cut back with the existing foliage providing the crown with protection for the cold months ahead.

Fleece can be used to offer a little extra protection but it would be good to make sure it is removed occasionally to allow fresh air round your plants to ward off any possibilities of grey mould. Dahlias will need to be lifted for the winter months. Dahlias produce a swollen root system and it is these roots (tubers) that need to be protected. Your first job will be to cut back the aerial part of

Got the flat battery blues? help is at hand . . . It’s any mobile-obsessed person’s nightmare: you’re out somewhere, your phone’s battery is depleted down into the red zone, and there’s not an electrical plug in sight! . . . . panic starts to set in just as another Pokemon is within your grasp! However, according to many technologists, the day that mobile and wearable devices can engage in “power-sharing,” by wirelessly charging each other on the go isn’t as far away as you might think. A recent invention called PowerShake allows mobile and wearable devices to wirelessly charge other mobile and wearable devices on the go, even when those devices are being held or worn. Wireless-charging technologies

are becoming more prevalent, but many of these stations are fixed, and do not account for devices near or in contact with skin. This innovative solution could help people easily recharge mobile or wearable gadgets, particularly for tasks such as emergency phone calls as current battery lives remain very limited. Although a number of devices providing extra power to mobiles and wearables already exist they have many limitations and can be cumbersome. PowerShake fits into small devices, meets wireless power transfer safety guidelines, and performs about as well at power transmission as commercial alternatives transferring about 3.1 watts of power. It is estimated that about 12 seconds of charging would support 1 minute of additional talk time, while 2 minutes of charging would support about 4 minutes of video watching. The one drawback of PowerShake is that twice as much energy needs to be transmitted as is received . . . that’s a big relief for Pokemon himself! . . . . but rest assured, the time will surely come!

Mexican magic When the Spanish conquistadores arrived in Mexico in the early 16th century, they sampled a local drink called Pulque, made from the fermented juice of the Agave plant. Much like beer, Pulque has a low alcohol content. It also contains vegetable proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, so it is used in many areas as a nutritional supplement. Accustomed to having alcoholic beverages with their meals, the Spaniards soon began to distill Agave juice into something stronger, calling it Mescal. It, in turn, became the precursor of today’s Tequila. Nowadays, there are dozens of tequila distillers in Mexico, and they produce over 180 million

litres a year, 40% of which is exported. Orchards of Blue Agave, a succulent related to the lily family, are cultivated in the arid highlands of west-central Mexico, principally in the state of Jalisco near the town of Tequila, after which the drink was named. Agave plants take up to 12 years to mature, absorbing a lot of minerals in the process. When the plant is harvested, its spiky leaves are cut away, leaving the pineapple-shaped heart called Pina. On average it weighs 50 kg and contains a rich juice. About 7 kg of Agave pinas are needed to produce 1 litre of Tequila. Many Mexicans enjoy Tequila straight, accompanied by salt and a slice of lime. Foreigners are more familiar with the margarita, a cocktail of Tequila mixed with lime juice and an orange-flavoured liqueur, served with crushed ice in a goblet rimmed with the salt. Marketed in the some 90 countries, Tequila has rightly been called Mexico’s ambassador abroad. Of the 136 species of Agave, several are used for Pulque and other alcoholic beverages. but only the Blue Agave is used for Tequila.

Sax Day

no

ob

Apparently, November 6th is officially World Saxophone Day. This classical woodwind instrument and is an essential instrument in jazz bands, symphonic bands, marching bands and more! To this day the instrument has a unique place in the musical world, so it’s only fitting that this great instrument has a day of recognition all of its own. The Sax was created around 1840, by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian musical instrument maker who made his first brass contraption out of part clarinet and part ophicleide, an older, keyed brass instrument. In all, he invented eight types of saxophones, all with different attributes of size, shape and tone: Sopranino, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass, Contrabass, and Subcontrabass. The first Saxophone ever created was the Bass Saxophone and the last, the 9th type of Saxophone, the very small Soprillo Saxophone, was invented in 2004. The instrument claimed particular notariety when it reached the USA and over the years, musicians playing the more mellow instruments in the range became typecast as ‘cool dudes’ notably the likes of John Coltrane, Stan Getz and Charlie Parker. Among many memorable chart hits since the sixties are some noteable favourites of mine: ‘Take Five’ by Dave Brubeck, ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ by Stan Getz, ‘Baker Street’ by Gerry Rafferty, ‘Careless Whisper’ by George Michael, ‘Smooth Operator’ by Sade, ‘One Step Beyond’ by Madness, ‘True’ by Spandau Ballet, ‘Songbird’ by Kenny G. So, good old Antoine-Joseph ‘Adophe’ Sax, the inventor of this pivotal instrument, born on the 6th of November 1814, definitely has a lot to answer for. Primarily, it has been the catalyst behind making many musicians very rich, even some who don’t actually play the instrument.

Watch out for the big bad wolf at this years’ Duston panto

In December 2016 Duston Players will be presenting their 19th traditional family pantomime, which this year is “Little Red Riding Hood”, at Duston Community Centre from Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th December. Performances will be at 7:30pm each evening, plus a 2:30pm matinee on the Saturday. So what will their loyal audiences see? Well, near the woods lies the seemingly peaceful village of Lumberton – but it is menaced by The Big Bad Wolf and the villagers are in fear of their lives. Can Mayor Culper save them all as he promises, or would they be better off trusting in Little Red Riding Hood and her friends the Three Little

Pigs? Lots of laughs and songs, plenty of boo and hiss, and enough “behind you” and “Oh no it isn’t” to keep everyone happy in their panto spectacular. Hoods up for a howling good time! Tickets are available through their box office on 07464 859017 or from their website at: www.dustonplayers.org.uk Although the group thought 2016 was their 70th anniversary, recently discovered documents prove that they actually started in 1944 (when they wrote to the War Office for permission to wear uniforms on stage) making this their 72nd year! Never a group to miss a party, they will still be celebrating their many years of entertaining the residents of Duston, and have also been adding lots of photos and archive material from past performances to their website and sharing them on Facebook to jog the memories of their many members past and present, and to encourage more people to join in the fun in future.

Few places in Russia have a more checkered history than Moscow’s gigantic fortified government district otherwise known as the Kremlin. Over time it has seen more than its share of deceit and death. As such, it is widely rumoured that the complex has quite a few ghosts roaming its corridors and alleyways. Since the Kremlin has been a place of power for centuries, many of its ghosts are famous. Ivan the Terrible, a particularly cruel 16th century ruler, is said to mourn his many sins in the Great Bell Tower, his footsteps clearly audible to those who dare to listen. Some say this ghost visited Russia’s last Tsar, Nikolay II, as a bad omen, immediately before the Tsar’s coronation. Nikolay was eventually killed by communists! Another famous ghost in the Kremlin is said to be none other than Lenin, whose ghost was already haunting the premises a good three months before he actually died. This does seem to be ‘far fetched’ as I for one have never heard of someone’s ghost appearing before they actually die! Let me know if you have? Finally, the most famous spectre said to be

When the Kremlin suddenly goes cold . . . stalking the Kremlin is, perhaps unsurprisingly, that of Joseph Stalin. Even in death, this ruthless dictator is said to manifest in times of crisis, as if to order the current rulers to return order by any means necessary. According to legend, Stalin’s restless spirit is present whenever a room in the Kremlin suddenly goes cold. With this fact in mind, one can now perhaps understand Russia’s apparent and complete ignorance of global warming!

Local Football Update by Andy Goldsmith

There is a different look to the UCL in the 2016/17 season with 5 clubs either leaving or making their League debut. One notable absentee is the much lamented local side Northampton Spencer who after 48 years in the competition reluctantly submitted their withdrawal at the end of last season. The other club leaving are Premier Division champions AFC Kempston Rovers who were promoted to the Evo Southern League Central Division and will now have a lucrative local derby with once proud nonleague giants Bedford Town. The UCL welcome three clubs into the fold; Daventry Town return to the League after a six season spell at a higher level. New to Division One are Whittlesea Athletic, promoted as Peterborough League runners up and under a new name, Melton Town, who join from the Leicestershire Senior League.

Premier reverse, 6-4 at Desborough, but bounced back the following weekend with a historic first 3-2 success at Sleaford Town. Calvin Budd, Ben Foster (penalty) and Adam Spalding scored for Chenecks with Ryan Oliver twice equalising for the Greens. Off the field the club has completed the construction of a new stand at the Billing Road ground. Over at Moulton Park, Northampton Sileby Rangers have added a sprinkling of new faces to the squad which finished last season strongly. Manager Lee Duffy has made three signings from one of his former clubs Stewarts & Lloyds after the Foundrymen narrowly missed out on promotion. Goalkeeper Kris Bartle, defender and skipper Paul Caswell and front man David Halliday have all switched to Fernie Fields, while S&L top scorer last term Michael Byrne has rejoined Rangers after initially putting pen to paper for Desborough. Other signings are attacking pair Scott Sandy from Kettering and Luke Stevens from Raunds while midfielder Luke Fairlamb is back from the United States where he played for St Peter’s College and fellow midfielder Luke Uzoma arrives from Polish club BKS Stal-Biesko. Adding to the international flavour is the signing of Sierra Leone international Allie Jaward who most recently played for Langford. Sileby played their traditional curtain raiser against Northampton Town on 9th July with the Cobblers, newly promoted to League One, running out 3-0 winners in front of a 1,200 plus crowd. Sileby have started the season where they left off last term and after 4 league games remain undefeated. In the FAC Sileby avenged a defeat in the previous season’s competition by Leighton, winning 2-1 on the road this time with goals from Stuart Macmichael and Michael Byrne. Rangers did themselves proud in the Preliminary Round, being edged out 4-3 by AFC Rushden & Diamonds in a thriller at the Dog & Duck.

It will be a season of firsts for the Billing Road outfit as the ON Chenecks make their bow in the UCL top flight, and participate in both the FA Cup and Northants Senior Cup for the first time. The ON Chenecks have gone for stability and relying heavily on the players that earned the club promotion last term. Joining are former Cogenhoe United players, goalkeeper Kevin Sparkes and defender Ryan Chamberlain, while midfield operator Jake Nagy has made the move from Wellingborough. An experienced addition to the Chenecks squad is Bugbrooke full back Ryan Nash, while Gavin Nullatamby has joined Chenecks from Bugbrooke to join Tim Clack’s backroom team with the reserves. In the early exchanges ON Chenecks have acquired reputation as stalemate specialists. Graham Cottle’s men started the season in the FA Cup, drawing twice with Harefield before losing the tie in a penalty shootout. They kicked off their league campaign with a 2-2 draw at Harrowby, Ben Foster scoring the club’s first top flight goal. A late fightback saw the spoils shared in a 3-3 draw at Oadby and the fifth successive stalemate was a scoreless affair at Newport Pagnell. The run of draws ended on 27th August as Chenecks suffered their first 50

The old mills & millers . . .

According to the Doomesday Survey of 1086, the three mills in Kingsthorpe had a combined leasing bill of 43 shillings and 4 pence a year. They were held, with the rest of the manor, on lease from the Crown and were rented out by the inhabitants. It also states the South Mill as being leased to St. Andrew’s Priory, which was close by and that the tenants of the Crown refused the priory’s request to fish in the river, between the Nether and South Mills. On the court rolls of 1411, Richard Napton, the Prior of St. Andrews, his monks and servants, were shown to be accused of fishing in the ‘Shote’ of the South Mill and making a weir to the detriment of Kingsthorpe. Records of retribution are unclear as are subsequent events. The survey also details that in 1439, the South and Nether Mills were rented at 80 shillings each per annum, while the Upper Mill (right) only realised half that. In 1457, the four watermills called the South Mills, were under one roof and served differing purposes. William Braunfeld’s ten year lease payment included a day’s mowing work and a 26 gallon cask of ale!

In 1614, the three mills were leased to William Whitmore and Edmund Sawyer, but were subject to a fee-farm rent of 12 pounds, 12 shillings and 4 pence. This fee-farm rent was granted to Queen Katharine in 1665 but changed hands seven years later when Sir Richard Rainsford stepped in. The survey also documents the Morgan family passing the estate over to Sir John Robinson who, subject to the fee-farm rent, held ownership till the late 19th century. Does anyone know any more?

like these on the high street! Entering, you are welcomed by exquisitely carved Indian arches, a fantastic mirror and jewel like oriental carpets in all shades. More practical items like TV cabinets, bookcases and coffee tables are in other rooms but everywhere you look are 100’s of beautiful rugs in all shapes, sizes, styles and colours; all available on a try before you buy basis too! The range of carvings, cushions, statues and furniture have all been hand selected to give you great choice and assured quality. By directly importing much of the stock the prices are also kept as low too. All this creates a business unique in Northampton, if not the U.K. With the high street brands compromising quality over price it’s refreshing to find somewhere that still offers quality and choice at very affordable prices. If you’re looking for something different then a visit is a essential. They are located just off Harlestone Road with plenty of FREE parking right outside the door.

Well worth a visit . . . The Rug & Furniture Company is a family business who have been sending rugs and furniture all over the world for over forty years. Originally on Abington Square Island they are well known for their huge choice of oriental and modern rugs and great value unique furniture as well as antique and tribal items imported directly from the Far East. With a friendly service and relaxed atmosphere you can see why they have a reputation second to none. Their huge warehouse has showrooms displaying an incredible range of rugs and furniture with each room offering something different to suit all budgets; you don’t find items

Check your childs eyesight Something to consider

A new free digital storybook aimed at encouraging parents and carers to check their children’s eyes has recently been launched. The initiative is a commitment to tackling undiagnosed vision problems in children and is called Zookeeper Zoe. Created in partnership with the National Literacy Trust and Boots, the book’s campaign highlights research from a Johnson & Johnson Vision Care survey that incredibly revealed 53% of children have never had a sight test! The book tells the story of a girl’s day out at the zoo during which she unexpectedly has to step in and help to look after the animals. The book, which is targeted at children aged four to six years, contains a range of interactive eye check activities to help highlight if a child might need support with their vision. As the story

unfolds, questions and images are built into the copy, featuring astigmatism, colour vision, duochrome and visual acuity checks. Although it’s only an indication of potential problems, it is important to remember that up to 80% of what a child learns is through their sight. According to experts, estimates suggest that one million children in the UK have an undiagnosed eye condition, possibly due to a lack of parental awareness. The publication is free to read online, or download from the book’s website: www. zookeeperzoe.co.uk. It is also available as an iOS and Android app.

Northampton

Recently, Martin Price, Chair of Northampton Men’s Sheds approached Age UK Northamptonshire looking for support to set up a Men’s Shed in The county. Age UK’s vision is for a world where everyone can love later life and were the ideal partner to help drive this project forward. Men’s Sheds have been invited to share a business unit with Spencer Contact, a Christian furniture reuse charity and they are working towards an official opening on Friday 30th September 2016. At present they meet at the Barn in Bradlaugh Fields every Wednesday 1.30 - 3.30pm. Men’s Sheds is a group of men sharing space, tools and other resources to work together on projects of self choice. They do this at their own pace in a safe and friendly social environment, sharing skills, informal lessons and ideas. Members engage together following their curiosity, new pursuits and community projects. They find purpose and achievement through discovery, social interaction and collaboration. Men’s Sheds are bringing greater connection and vitality to community.

mens sheds . .

The Men’s Shed movement began in Australia in 1996 where there are now around 1,000 Sheds across the country. Across the UK there are now around 300 Sheds. Research shows there to be a growing number of Northampton men, over a third of those over 65 live alone. Come and join us! We are keen to meet men who are interested to join us as “Shedders”. Some come expecting to learn new skills, other bring abilities that they can then share. If you are interested in joining us please call Kate Kingston at Age UK Northamptonshire on 01604 611200 or email the Chairman, Martin Price at: mprice@engagementworks.com

Just a little help could make a real difference to someone with sight loss My name is Tony and I am a Guide Dog owner living in Northampton with my dog Inga. We have been a partnership for the past three and a half years and thanks to Inga’s support, I am able to enjoy travelling throughout the county with confidence and pleasure. Inga means a huge amount to me and I wanted to help other people with sight loss benefit from the assistance of a guide dog in the way that I have. So, for the past two years, I have been Chairman of Guide Dogs Northampton volunteer group, which raises essential funds for the Charity, supporting the important work it does to improve the lives of people with sight loss. I have met so many wonderful people since I first got involved. Our volunteers give whatever time they have available, but we are urgently looking for assistance with some of the administrative tasks. If you enjoy organising meetings, taking notes, or could arrange volunteer rotas; would be able

to drive equipment or people to T events; can use a computer to write correspondence, or are a wiz on Facebook, Twitter or other social media sites, we would love you to get involved. There are lots of ways you might be able to assist, no matter what spare time you have, we would really appreciate any of your help. A Guide Dog costs ÂŁ50,000 to train and we receive no government funding - relying upon the support of the public, and your help would make a real difference. To find out more or have someone to give a talk about Guide Dogs to a local group, visit our Northampton Facebook pages. https://www. facebook.com/ And if you think you could help, email: penny. hefferan@guidedogs.org.uk. or give her a call on 0118 9838882.
