Chairman’s Message The AGM will take place as usual in the Hall of St Giles Church in Northampton on 19th June 2017 at 2 p.m. All members are cordially invited to attend. The AGM itself will be brief. After the AGM is concluded, all attendees will be invited to free refreshments including tea, coffee, some soft drinks, cakes and biscuits. The raffle will then be drawn and winners can collect their prizes. At 3 o’clock entertainment will be provided for an hour by a small professional group. We are assured that they are very good. Please consider joining us. I am sure you will enjoy it. We had planned to ask Smart Energy GB to come and give a talk on smart meters. Sadly the evidence that has recently come to light on the news, told us not to do it. The chief executive of EDF said “the plans faced many challenges and that this could pose a threat to public confidence in the programme”. The advice I offer at the moment is, if you don’t have one, stay as you are until the issues surrounding this programme are resolved. It is likely that once the difficulties are sorted out, using a smart meter will be a good idea. However it is unlikely that will happen soon. The government’s target of 26 million by 2020 looks more like wishful thinking than a working plan. The new magazine articles are written to help our age group to lead a better, safer and more comfortable life. The major issue that we see is that although there are a lot of ways in which life can be improved, the details are often available on line, but only if you look for them. It can be difficult to find, if you don’t know the information exists. A classic item is the extra tax that married and civil partnership members can claim if one of them is not paying income tax or not using all of their allowance. This has been in place since April 2014 but more than 2,000,000 people, (this is around half the total) who are entitled, have not claimed. By the time you read this, the maximum amount a couple could get in reduced tax this year is £652 and around £220 per year thereafter. The government simply has not publicised this well enough. The other major problem for our generation is the rapid move by government and councils to only allowing online communication for services. For instance, if you need to replace a lost or broken recycling box you are required to ask online. This means that the most vulnerable people at greatest need of help, find it more difficult to get. The Government eager to reduce spending has stopped funding the later life forums across the Country. The forums have responded by banding together to form a national organisation called EngAgeNet short for the English Age Network. Hoping to be able to put more pressure on government and councils to support the older age group and better meet the needs of the most vulnerable. As I write this article the public launch of the group is due to take place in the House of Lords sponsored by Lord Filkin. Who is an active supporter of our generation.

Eating Breakfast has long term benefits By Aba Wilson-Morkeh, Health and Fitness Coach, Kettering For a lot of people, breakfast is something they skip or perhaps is not something they consider to be the most important meal of the day, or is it? The National Health Service states that ‘eating breakfast has long term health benefits’. It can reduce obesity and its related issues, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. This is why our people are advised to enjoy a healthy and balanced breakfast which can help keep appetite under control, reduce cravings and help burn fat stores for energy, which promotes healthy weight management. In addition, there are key benefits such as hydration, energy, provision of balanced nutrition to kick start the day, which other breakfast choices will not fulfil. According to research, skipping breakfast or consistently not eating the right type of breakfast, eg. toast, cereal, juice, coffee, etc. can affect blood sugar levels, cravings, mood and a lack of energy and vitality. In fact in the longer term, poor breakfast choices can lead to some of these health issues (World Health Organisation). Breakfast provides the body and brain with much needed fuel after a fast throughout the night, hence the origin of the its name – to break the fast! Without breakfast, it’s difficult to get going without breaking down. It’s like trying to move the car without petrol. To get your trial breakfast and a personalised meal plan for your needs, please book for a free confidential appointment today with us. Call 01536 511341 or 07725 685090. Join in our activities: FREE health walks – Every Wednesday – Meet at the Corn Market Hall; Summer Fitcamp Challenge – Mondays and Thursdays 6.30pm in Kettering; £4 per session (Advanced bookings). Kingsthorpe’s ‘Home Grown’ Nursery Cramden Nursery is a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today it is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. Cramden Nursery is open again, as usual, on the 1st March. Emily and her team have had a busy winter planting up Lavenders, Agapanthus, Heucheras, Dianthus and Hardy Geraniums. They have been kept very busy taking cuttings of Penstemons and a wide selection of Pelargoniums. “With the nursery closed from October to the public I often get asked if we head off to the sunshine for a month or two by my customers,” commented Emily. “But we have so much plant work to get done through the winter months there is no chance of that, however we do get a nice break for Christmas to recharge before the rush of spring and summer sets in.” Emily was keen to talk about the new plant lines they have grown for this spring. “We are very excited about our spring Pansies that we have grown from seed here at Cramden Nursery. The seeds were sown in late autumn, we have a wonderful mix of colours to choose from, the traditional blues and violets, fresh whites and vibrant yellows that will brighten up any container or hanging basket adding that much needed colour as we head into the spring.” Emily also introduced me to their range of Vegetable plants they have decided to grow this year. There were Tomatoes, both uprights and trailers, the later she assured me would make a great edible basket display in the summer. They also have Aubergine and Courgette plants for sale too, I can feel a ratatouille recipe coming to mind straight away. Emily did remind me however that none of these vegetable plants are frost hardy so will need to be grown on in a greenhouse or indoors until the frosts are over. The nursery is open in March Mon-Sat 9-5 and Sundays 10-4pm. All their plants are home grown and healthy. There is plenty of parking on the nursery and their friendly staff are on hand to help you.

The website is easy to use and very flexible, enabling people to search by organisation, postcode, area location, availability or type of volunteering role to help find the perfect opportunity for them – they can even say whether they are looking for a one-off opportunity or a regular, long-term placement. More than 80 organisations already use the Get Involved Hub to promote their volunteering opportunities. Volunteering is a great way for people of all ages to enrich their lives and has a wide range of benefits, providing the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, give something back to their local communities and make new friends. For more information about the Get Involved Hub, please email getinvolved@ firstforwellbeing.co.uk or to take a look at the Hub, visit www.northamptonshire.gov. uk/getinvolved

Around the County Don’t Get Stung by the Increase in Gas & Electricity Prices It seems that every few weeks we hear that a utility supplier is putting up their prices for gas & electricity, with some increases over 10%. For many of us we cannot run a house or stay warm and comfortable without these utilities so rising prices will bring concern and significantly affect household bills. The Village Networks project, funded by The Big Lottery and managed by the charity South Northants Volunteer Bureau, helps and encourages people to find better deals for gas & electricity by using the regulated comparison websites. “Over the last few years we have helped over 220 people search out better deals,” says the project coordinator Nick King. “Sometimes it can be a saving as much as £20 a month. You do not need to be clever on the computer as I can do the research for you and let you have the comparison results for you to decide, as only you can switch supplier.” Village Networks advice is free and impartial. Give Nick a call on 01327 358264 or email nick@snvb.org.uk and he will be in touch to see if he can help.

50+: Did You Know? Are You Paying too much Tax? 2.6 million Couples do! Are you married or in a civil partnership? If so you may be entitled to a £432 tax break called the marriage tax allowance. Yet 2.6 million of the 4.2 million eligible couples are still missing out. It’s free money, so worth checking. The marriage tax allowance is a still little-known way for couples to transfer a proportion of their personal allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each tax year) between them. Here’s our quick Q&A on how to get it, plus some key information. Who can get it? This is the most important factor as only people with these specific circumstances will be able to apply: n You’re married or in a civil partnership (just living together doesn’t count). n One of you needs to be a non-taxpayer, which usually just means earning less than the £11,000 personal allowance (£10,600 for 2015/16). n The other one of you needs to be a basic 20% rate taxpayer (couples with a higher- or additional-rate taxpayer aren’t eligible for this allowance). This means you’d normally need to earn less than £43,000 (£42,385 for 2015/16) n Both of you must have been born on or after 6 April 1935 (if not it’s another tax perk) So in a nutshell one of you must be a non-taxpayer and one of you must be a basicrate taxpayer. Sounds promising – so how does the maths work? The partner who has an unused amount of personal allowance can transfer £1,100 of their allowance to the other (so basically 10% of the full allowance). It doesn’t matter if they have £5,000 of their allowance left unused or £500; they can only transfer £1,100. How come the total equals £432 Your claim will also cover the preceding year if accepted by the Inland Revenue so for year 2014/2015 you would receive £212 and 2016/2017 £220 OK, so how do we actually apply? It really is very simple, and only takes a few minutes; just use the application at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). To do it you’ll need both your National Insurance numbers, and one of a range of different acceptable forms of ID for the non-taxpayer. If there’s a problem doing it via the web just call 0300 200 3300 and do it by phone. It’s worth noting you can also only apply for those years in which you both meet the criteria. So if you earned more than the £10,600 personal allowance in 2015/16, HMRC won’t allow you to claim for it. There is one very important point to make though... It’s the non-taxpayer who must apply to transfer their allowance. If the taxpayer applies you’re doing it the wrong way round and it won’t work. What about applying in the next tax year The new legislation only happened in tax year starting 2015. Allowances can be claimed for up to 4 years. So if you can successfully apply in the new tax year you will be eligible for a tax break of more than £600 in year 2017/2018 and more than £200 every succeeding year I was born before 6 April 1935 – why can’t I get this? This is because there’s a different, better allowance available to you, that HMRC is phasing out. If one of you is over 81, then you could be eligible for the married couple’s (& civil partner’s) allowance. This could give you a reduction on your tax bill of up to £835. 50+: Did You Know? How to Harmonise Retired Living The following article was provided to me some time ago. A member wanted it included in the magazine when space was available. Now that we can afford extra pages it can be done

“Shakespeare called it “the seven ages of man”

We move, without realising it, through the years of life. Different aspects are very important in different years, as we travel on. Probably the most important years are when we are responsible for children. They are on our minds, in various ways, often for 20 or more years. Wives cannot always go out to work and earn the family money. They may be dependent on husbands or partners for their financial support. Their work with the family and the home is just as important. When the children have left home or have become financially secure in work. The wife/partner is able seek and enjoy employment. Happy to establish independence and an identity of thier own. Both partners usually look forward to retirement and freedom from the boundaries that define employment. Many have not prepared for it. They have no idea how to keep busy and occupied, during the long hours of every day. It’s like trying to get used to new digital technologies – patience and understanding are paramount. During the early years of their relationship they were happy. Now one may not be able to plan ahead. Now one becomes more domineering, instinctively trying to overcome this problem, that had not been foreseen. One wants to help the other, seeing them as a weaker member of the relationship. One may stay at home due to bad weather, one cannot partake in sports and many, many other reasons. One member achieving dominance, causes stress and worry for the other. Worry can cause illness. It is very difficult for the partners in such a relationship to firmly establish their own character or identity. The cure for this stress is respect. . Every one should make an effort to live in harmony . Every one should respect the identity of their partner in the home, Courtesy ( as practised in France from a young age) is a first step. Always be polite. Value your partner and their personality. Do not try to dominate them. If they want advice they will ask you. Offer it without making an issue of it. Try to share plans equally. Holidays, the garden. The shared things, whilst still enjoying your own hobby group with other friends If stress has gone from your lives your are successful and happy!

50+: Did You Know? Need Help? Why not ask for it Being an older person often means that doing small jobs in the home can become really difficult issues. I discovered that one of our members had badly suffered while doing a small job in the house, which involved a 2 step ladder. He sadly missed the step as he was descending. This resulted in a fall backwards hitting his head. Fortunately the ambulance came quickly to take him into emergency care, and his injuries were not life threatening, he has made a full recovery. The member however did discover a useful tip. The British Legion has a Handy Van service known as Poppy Calls. It is available to the following categories:Those eligible for support services can be summarised as: u People who are serving or who have served in the Armed Forces - ‘Beneficiaries’ u Their dependants u Their carers More information is available: http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-support/eligibility/ Our injured member was able to ask for and receive the help necessary for the small job he wanted done Below are some examples of the sort of jobs that they will do for anyone who qualifies: u Changing light bulbs and tap washers u Putting up shelves, curtain rails and grab rails u Fitting smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors u Fitting and changing door locks and other security features u Building access ramps and storage sheds to house Legion-provided Electrically Propelled Vehicles u Installing care phones. Call them for free on 0800 032 0306 or email homesupportadmin@britishlegion.org. uk. If they can help, they will. The eligibility criteria are wider than you realise. If you have a need, look on the website if you can; or use the freephone service. They will quickly tell you if you are eligible

How Safe is your Home? How safe is you home? Do you know if there are any fire risks in your house? You may be totally unaware of risks that are there in your residence, Do you have a smoke alarm on each floor? Do you ensure that all your doors are shut before you retire? If the answer is no to any of these questions then you are at greater risk of a fire in your home. Unfortunately fires can occur at any time - day or night. The local fire service and organisations like The British Legion, The Red Cross and Age UK are working together to provide home safety checks and advice to home owners. The local fire service of Northamptonshire is working hard to reduce the fire risks in the homes of this county. They are particularly concerned about the more vulnerable people in Northants, and will act quickly to help, when they are notified of the need. So what will they do? They will examine the home, and provide information about how to prevent common fires They will tell you what do if a fire starts, and show the best way to escape as quickly as possible. They will explain the need for smoke alarms, if you don’t have them and tell you when and how to test them. In some cases they may be able to fit a smoke detector for you. Continued overleaf

50+: Did You Know? How Safe is your Home? - continued How to request a fire safety check You can access the fire service on the web through www3.northamptonshire.gov.uk and search for the fire and rescue service. A request can be made on line. If however you don’t have access to the net or prefer not to use it, then there is a phone number you may call 0300 1261000 (dial option 5). and someone from the Customer Contact Centre at Northamptonshire County Council will complete the Home Fire Safety Check Referral form over the phone. The number is charged at a local rate and inclusive mobile phone minutes can be used. Who will carry out your home fire safety check? They will always inform you of who will be attending your home for a pre-booked appointment. If you are approached as a result of ‘direct engagement’ in your area please be assured that all staff will wear a valid service ID card. These can be checked by contacting the fire service. They are working in partnership with the British Red Cross, Royal British Legion Poppy Calls and Age UK. Who may contact you to carry out your home fire safety check on behalf of the Fire and Rescue Service. Should you request a check? Well what have you got to lose? Nothing. What have you got to gain – at the very least reassurance; at the most you may save your house or even a life. If you live in an older house it is probably very necessary request the check. More modern ones are better, but the three questions at the start of this article still apply. If any answer is no then request a check.

Was it a Miracle? Some years ago, whilst working as a volunteer driver taking older folk to medical appointments, I drove a particular woman to her physician several times. She had a number of symptoms but no diagnosis. She was generally unwell. Her doctor was unable to diagnose any particular illness nor was the local hospital. The last visit to the doctor with me, was when she told me of her “miracle cure”. It seems that her central heating system had not been serviced for a long period, so she had arranged for it to be done. Her contractor said that the service had been successfully completed and asked her if she felt unwell. She said yes. He told her that there had been a partial blockage in her exhaust system. This had meant a dangerous level of carbon monoxide in the house, causing her ill health, and that she was lucky to be alive. Fortunately she made a full quick recovery. The story above is true! Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless. It is extremely toxic needing only a small amount of the gas to make one very ill or cause death. Over the last 2 years around 2000 people have been treated for carbon monoxide poisoning due to faults in various heating products in the UK. I also wonder if others encountered a miracle when they had their equipment serviced. Signs of Carbon Monoxide The moral is – It is possible to be poisoned without realising it. Some rules for keeping safe: b Fit a detector and test it every month b Service your central heating and gas fires at least once a year If you use any device that has flames, keep the room well ventilated.
