Skip your weight away with Becca Mclachlan’s 10-Minute jump rope workout! Exercise 2 Single Leg Jumps 2 minutes: Transfer your body weight from one leg to another landing on alternate feet, keeping your elbows inward towards your sides, shoulder blades down and back, chest lifted, and your head up. Use your forearms and wrists to swing the rope over your head. 15 seconds rest Exercise 3 Alternating Low Kick Jumps 1 minute - Alternate your legs back and forth kicking your opposite leg forward each time. Do not kick your legs high, keep them low. 15 seconds rest Exercise 4 Forward/Back/Left/Right Jumps 1 minute - Keeping your feet close together (and still jumping on your toes) jump forward about 4-6 inches, backwards 4-6 inches, then to your left side 4-6 inches and finally to your right side 4-6 inches. Then repeat! This one will challenge not only your body, but your mind too! 15 seconds rest Go back to exercise 1 and repeat the set. If you’re aim is to lose weight it’s important to combine any exercise program with the right nutrition plan. If you’re ready to make the change to become healthier, leaner and fitter for life Becca Mclachlan is offering all Northamptonshire magazine readers the opportunity to join her online Metabolic Booster Programme for just £21 for 21 days a saving of £26 using the exclusive Northampton Magazines promo code. In just a few minutes anywhere, anytime, you can be skipping your way to a better body. Skipping will not only help you burn calories and improve your cardiovascular fitness but it will also help to tone up your whole body. Firstly you need to invest in a decent rope which are available in most good sports shops. There are two types of ropes, speed ropes and weighted ropes. A speed rope is ideal for beginners but can be used by elite athletes to develop footwork, coordination and conditioning. If you use a weighted rope you’ll also be using your upper body strength to keep the rope spinning. It’s really important to choose a rope length that matches your height. If you are under 5 ft 3 use an 8-ft rope, if you are between 5ft 4 & 5ft 10 use a 9ft rope and a 10ft rope if you are between 5ft 11 & 6ft 6. Becca’s Jump Rope Tips •Make sure you keep your jumps low. Jump no higher than an inch off of the ground. You aren’t high jumping, just jump high enough to clear the rope. •When you jump, jump on your toes. •The effort of turning the rope should come from your forearms and wrists, not your shoulders, keep your elbows tucked in to your sides. •Always keep your tummy tight (pulling your belly button in). Becca’s 10-Minute Jump Rope Workout This workout is a beginner/intermediate workout. If you are a beginner take it easy and work up to completing this, if you find it too challenging at first just skip for as long as you can then march on the spot for the rest of the time before you move on to the next skipping exercise. Stick with it and you’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll improve. Exercise 1 Double leg Jumps 1 minute - Do as many double leg jumps as you can in 60-seconds, set yourself a challenge and see how many jumps you can complete. Beginners, don’t worry if you don’t go as fast as Rocky Balboa, do what you can… jump no more than 1-inch high landing on your toes gently. 15 seconds rest

If anyone took the time to venture into the echelons of local medieval history they would undoubtably encounter the intriguing romanticism of an underworld that many believe still exists beneath our town today. Be it fact or pure fiction that these passageways do exist, the likelihood is that they are simply a disjointed collection of cellars, crypts and possibly ancient waterways. Someone knows the truth! Historic evidence tends to support the existence of these tunnels, like the infamous escape of Thomas a Becket from Northampton Castle. A well documented part of 12th century history suggests that the persecuted Archbishop of Canterbury managed to escape from the fortress in mysterious and unexplained circumstances. One popular myth is that he avoided capture by Henry II’s entourage via a tunnel that linked the castle to All Saints Church in Mercers Row. However, the castle was known to have had a 25 foot deep moat as protection, so if any passageway had existed it would have been an absolute mission to construct it. Local chap, Robin Lanyard first discovered a tunnel at the Church when he was a teenager. His gang used to hang out in a nearby garden and on the other side of the garden was an old house that had been deserted for many years. One day the gang decided to explore the house, a few of them turned back because of the filthy environment, but some, including Robin, carried on searching the house. It didn’t take long to find the basement which contained an old bath tub, bits of old wood and general junk. But one thing stood out in the room - a wooden door with a face carved into its structure. It was hard to tell if the look on the face was carved to look odd or if time had taken its toll and made it distorted. Having opened the door they found a long tunnel and using their lighters, they ventured further. Passing a door about halfway down the tunnel they carried on until they came to another door which was locked. By pacing out their steps and surveying the angles, it was obvious that it led to the church. Other rumours about clergy and monks using the alleged tunnel network as escape routes are evident in certain archives of the town’s history.
Local labyrinth: fact or fiction? During the fractious Middle Ages, rocky relations between the church and monarchy were common occurrences and many theories suggest that members of the clergy often either hid in or escaped through these underground passages. One local historian claims that at one time, six religious houses surrounded All Saints Church and it is highly likely that six major underground routes linked each with our towns centre point. Further evidence of these passageways was uncovered during the demolition of a house in 1860. A large vault with springing buttresses and a gargoyle at the apex was uncovered. Today this is ocuppied by the MacDonalds restaurant in the Drapery and many think this may well have been the site of St Martin’s Chapel. Vaults were also found in the 19th century in nearby College Street which was formerly the site of the College of All Saints which was a residence for priests. Also nearby, under the Northampton and County Club in George Row there still exists an impressive length of interconnected vaults and cellars believed to date back to the 14th century and considered likely to have connected with the church across the road. One popular myth was that it was a place that visiting pilgrims used as a hostel. Sometimes these chasms are opened up to the public via blue badge tour guides and some visitors think that it is apparent by the remaining sinks, shafts and hooks, that this chilled underground area was once used as a kitchen and food store. However, any connection to All Saints 9
E
has been long since blocked up, that is if it ever existed! There are many other accounts of tunnels stretching for miles under the town’s Market Square and beyond, particulaly from those who grew up during World War Two. One claimant regularly used these tunnels, often daring each other and their girlfriends to go down the dark routes. His account reveals a tunnel which led to the Holy Sepulchre Church and went on to the site of the old monastery near Grafton Street. Indeed, around 15 years ago a road collapsed in Church Lane which supports this speculation. It is also said that there is a further shaft connecting the Holy Sepulchre along Sheep Street to the old Conservative Club in Gold Street. Just down from this, evidence of long tunnels have been reported that run from the old telephone exchange in Commercial Street under Bridge Street and rather more bizarrely that one of these connects to Delapre Abbey. For all those that marvel in the speculation of this mysterious labyrinth, there are many sceptics who say that many of these passages have been
simply mistaken for cellars, as in olden times many inns, churches and businesses had some sort of integrated storage facility. In fact, many of these were used as underground air raid shelters during wartime. It is also said that under the towns focal point, All Saints Church, there only appears to be evidence of two self-contained (12th and 13th century) vaulted crypts, one of which is now used as its boiler room. Also the likelihood of any underground connectivity between the town and Delapre Abbey seem to flounder on the position of the River Nene.

No Job too Big or too Small Small Friendly Team
Divorce in the UK can be an ugly business, but be aware it can be far worse elsewhere, especially in Europe! Take a look at a young German, identified only by his eBay handle, Der Juli, who took the court’s 50-50 ruling particularly badly! As a result, most of the couple’s belongings paid the price when he divied up the goods with an electric angle grinder – an item usually employed to accurately cut paving or flag stones. Apparently, he considered everything as fair game and halved items including chairs, a teddy bear, an REM record, a sofa, a bed, a bicycle and even a mailbox. Other more valuable items included a Samsung TV, an iPhone 5, an Apple Macbook Pro and the highlight of the show, an Opel car. The disturbed German didn’t stop at total destruction either. He posted his entire share of the carnage for sale on eBay with the following message: “Thank you for 12 ‘beautiful‘ years, Laura !!!!! You’ve really earned your half.” He also posted a YouTube video of the whole process with a note reading, “Good luck to my successor!” So if you’re in the market for a set of half dining
The 50/50 split . . . room chairs, try your luck on eBay . . . However, Der Juli’s ridiculous escapade pales into insignificance when compared to another German guy’s shenanigans. He decided to settle his imminent divorce by chainsawing the family home into two pieces and making off with his half on a tow truck. Police in the eastern town of Sonneberg reported that the trained mason, carefully measured the single-storey summer house before accurately chainsawing through the wooden roof and walls. After finishing the job, the guy picked up his half with the aid of a forklift and transported it to his brother’s place where he claimed that he was merely taking his fair share! However, one can’t help but wonder just how they divied up the land!!!

New gym open at Cripps!
Following extensive improvement works, Northampton Leisure Trust (NLT) is pleased to announce that the new Trilogy gym at Cripps Recreation Centre is now open. The state of the art facility features a calming and stretching studio, functional training studio as well as a strength, conditioning and free weights area. NLT took over the management of Cripps Recreation Centre located within the grounds of Northampton General Hospital on 6 May. It now operates Cripps alongside its four other leisure facilities across Northampton under the Trilogy brand.
Ian Redfern, Managing Director, Northampton Leisure Trust comments “Inspiring Active Lifestyles is what we do. showed the score to viewers. At the time, the rules called for five judges to press a button when they judged a scoring blow. If three buttons were triggered within a second of one another, a point was awarded to the fighter landing the punch. This old system relied heavily on the reaction time of the judges, who were of varying ages, but in Atlanta both Todorov and Mayweather believed they had been under scored. When the decision was announced, the referee (now working for FIFA) initially raised Mayweather’s arm before realising his mistake and raising Todorov’s. A few months later, Mayweather turned professional and began a career that has produced 48 consecutive victories and hundreds of millions of dollars in earnings. Yet for Todorov, now in his mid forties, the stark gap between his life and Mayweather’s since their match - the loser is worth an estimated $280 million and the winner does not even own a flat screen TV - is not what riles him. In a curious twist, Todorov believes he and Mayweather may have actually been wronged by the same man. For years boxing fans, particularly Americans, speculated that Todorov’s victory over Mayweather was, at least in part, a product of suspect judging. Todorov does not discard this theory but his real fury stems from what happened in the Atlanta final - the match after his win over Mayweather - when he believed he was the one unfairly beaten. Today, while Mayweather has just earned $180 million from one contest, Todorov is trying to live on a monthly pension of about 400 euro. Todorov laments that his own hardship can be traced back to what happened in Atlanta. In reality the man who beat Floyd Mayweather wakes up every morning wishing he had lost! Mayweather’s backers thought that Emil Jetchev, a Bulgarian who was the long, incumbent chairman of the international referees and judges commission, had influenced the judges towards his fellow countryman. That was not a new accusation. South Korean and American boxers similarly suspected Jetchev at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Todorov agrees and blames Jetchev for his loss in the gold medal bout arguing that he was
the
winner & the
loser
The man who beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. lives across the street from a burned out coffee hut with a giant banana painted on its back wall. Around the bend, leaning in the tall grass, is a corroded shed holding ancient farming equipment. Every so often a horse trots down the craggy road, pulling a splintered cart and rider towards the centre of one of Bulgaria’s poorest towns, Pazardzhik. The man who beat Mayweather, Serafim Todorov stood on the curb, in front of the seven floor concrete apartment building where he, his wife, his son and his pregnant daughter-in-law live in a modest first floor flat. Todorov talked with his son Simeon, he watched a horse clop by, he smoked a cigarette, then he went back inside, sat in a chair and like a kettle perched on a glowing stove, steamed to a rolling boil as he remembered what happened in that Atlanta final, in early August, 19 years ago. The semi-final victory by Todorov, then 27, over Mayweather, then only 19, in the 1996 Olympic featherweight class was the last time Mayweather lost in the ring. The stylish Bulgarian started as favourite, but Mayweather surprised him in the first two rounds. Todorov feinted and used a lot of one-punch attacks while Mayweather countered in combinations. The fighters went to the final round with Todorov trailing 7-6. The last three minutes was desperate stuff. Two good body shots gave Todorov an 8-7 lead, but Mayweather had a couple of flurries that (suspicously) did not count. Mayweather did tie the score with about a minute left only for two shots by Todorov making it 10-8. Neither fighter or judge immediately knew who had won the contest until it was announced over the public address, but in practice, most corners had a spy who would find a TV, which 19

unfairly beaten by Somluck Kamsing. Todorov’s first clue came just before the fight, when Jetchev entered his locker room beforehand and told his fellow countryman that the only way he could be sure to win the gold medal was by a knock out! Todorov indeed lost his final, but he knew that the judges were not scoring his points the whole thing was rigged! After his defeat, he felt betrayed. He had brought much attention and adulation to Bulgarian boxing over the years, but now he felt only bitterness. With the 1997 world championships approaching, he met with Turkish officials and accepted an offer to change his affiliation and fight for Turkey. The deal was substantial and if Todorov won the gold medal his reward would be around $1 million. All that was needed was approval from the Bulgarian federation. Needless to say, Jetchev had intervened at the last second and asked for a transfer fee of $300,000! Naturally, an upset Todorov refused to fight for Bulgaria and his boxing career was all but over. Todorov’s stylish approach had caught the eye of a number of boxing promoters. Immediately after his
Mayweather victory, an American syndicate offered him a signing on bonus, a house, a car, a new life and big fights in front of big crowds. Much to his wifes dismay, without considering his future and unaware of the apparent corruption that followed, he turned them away. Although it may be sour grapes, Todorov feels that had he lost to Mayweather he would have surely continued boxing in an attempt to reach an Olympic final. The American offer, the betrayal by Jetchev, the fall out with his Federation, the failed attempt at switching nationalities, other missed opportunities abroad and unhealthy offers to work in the Bulgarian underworld wouldn’t have surfaced. Instead, he returned home in the hope that things could get better, but now, in his mind, all he found was hell!

Another way of describing nature’s way of breaking down materials is composting. Whether it’s on the forest floor or in your bin, anything natural such as leaves, fruit, vegetables, wool or paper will slowly rot and decompose over time thanks to the help of myriad organisms, bacteria, fungi, and insects. It might make you cringe, but what remains is a rich, nutrient packed substance, which should look similar to soil, that your garden will love. Composting is fairly simple to do and September is an ideal time to begin. However, care still needs to be taken as there are numerous variables that can lead to either a slimy pile of goo or a heap of dry chippings that won’t breaking down – neither of which will benefit your garden. Here’s a guide to help you get it right. There are obvious reasons for creating compost as estimates have shown that around 30 per cent of household waste is ideal for your heap. Thanks to the national appetite for compost, 94 per cent of Britain’s ancient peat bogs have been all but destroyed or damaged, and as a result, some of our most important eco-systems have been lost forever. While nothing can ever really compensate for that, by creating your own compost, you’re both helping to protect boggy eco-systems and making a new one, as many species will be attracted to the food and warmth available in your heap. If you are starting afresh, choose a nice sunny spot with plenty of heat and light, and place your heap or bin on a patch of soil or concrete. Now all you have to do is regularly top it up with the right sort of waste. You can be as lazy or as active as you like. The more you manage your compost, the faster it will be ready to spread across or dig into the garden. So what can you throw into your compost heap? Anything natural that rots will compost. Grass, chopped up trees, vegetables, fruit peel, brown paper or even the dust from your hoover can go on the pile. Break up any weeds so they don’t start to grow in your bin and very importantly, turn your compost pile as often as possible. Creating the right balance is key and you need just the right mix of dry, wet, hard and soft waste to get the most beneficial mix. Try to get a good balance of wet and 22
The Good Life dry ingredients from raw fruit and vegetable scraps, tea bags, old flowers, soft prunings, straw and hay, and also throw in household waste such as old egg boxes, cardboard, paper bags, kitchen roll and egg shells. Hot rotters that work to speed up the compost process are essential and include weeds, grass cuttings, comfrey leaves, nettles and even diluted urine. Also important are slow rotters that decay over a long time. Autumn leaves, wood chippings and the results of seasonal pruning are all good bets. Older and tougher materials take longer to decay but add quality to the compost. Avoid things like cooked food, meat, poultry and fish, dairy products, and bread. Also avoid oranges, lemons and limes as they deter worms and never include items that could actually pollute the soil in your garden. This means no coal ash, dog poo, nappies, cat litter or glossy magazines. One problem that can crop up is millions of tiny fruit flies hovering over the heap. These are part of the decomposition process but their numbers can be reduced by burying any fruit waste among other ingredients. Flies are also a sign that the compost is a little too wet or has too many ‘green’ ingredients so make sure that the bin has a lid and add ‘brown’ ingredients such as straw, cardboard or paper to re-balance the heap. If you’ve done it right, after about six months the bottom your compost pile will have turned into a lovely dark, silky soil like substance and is ready to use. Remove it from the compost bin and either use it on the garden straight away or bag it for future use. It’s best to add it to your garden a few weeks before you plant your seeds, bulbs or vegetables to give it a chance to work into the soil. You can also use it to feed your house plants but it may be a bit smelly.

Find Time to grow Agapanthus!
Cramden Nursery is a little gem of a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today the nursery is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. Agapanthus really come into their own at Cramden Nursery during August. They are wonderful tropical looking plants with their strong architectural flowers held high above their lush strappy foliage. Their flower colour ranges from deep blue, mauve, and lilac through to sky blue. They are also available in beautiful fresh white. The large spherical flower heads, made up of individual trumpet like florets, make a perfect back drop for Pelargoniums. “You’ll find our Agapanthus grown in a 2 litre pot primed & ready to flower,” explains Emily. Emily recommends regular watering and feeding with a high potash feed. Here at Cramden Nursery they have put together their own liquid plant
feed that they use throughout the nursery, they have called it “Geranium Elixir”. Emily goes on to explain that this plant food is blended to optimise the plants flowering ability & it is this liquid feed they use on their Agapanthus and wow the results are stunning. There are large pots of flowering Agapanthus dotted throughout the nursery, producing impressive displays of blue and white flowering Agapanthus. Emily was very keen to share with me the exciting news about this autumn. Up until now the nursery has always closed its doors at the end of August, but this year they have grown a crop of delightful violas. Both upright and trailing types will brighten up your hanging baskets & pots once your summer bedding has past their best. These pretty little faces come in an array of colours: fresh whites, daffodil yellow, orange & purple. There are also bicolour flowers of yellow & purple and blue & white to choose from. The nursery will be open Mon to Saturday 9-5 throughout September, all their plants are home grown and the staff are so very helpful. There is plenty of parking on the nursery. Cramden Nursery is well worth a visit for all gardeners. Go and see what you have been missing.

Smart thinking saves the day!
A Farmer lived near a quiet rural highway in the States. But, as time went by, the volume of traffic rapidly increased and his straying chickens were being run over at an alarming rate. So the Farmer called the local sheriff’s office and said, “You’ve got to do something about all of these speeding drivers, they’re killing all of my chickens.” “What do you want me to do?” asked the sheriff. “Just do something about those crazy drivers!” So the next day one of his men erected a sign that said: SLOW: SCHOOL CROSSING Three days later the Farmer called the sheriff and said, “You’ve got to do something! That ‘school crossing’ sign just makes them go even faster.” So, again, the sheriff gets a new sign put up: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY But the traffic got faster still. So the Farmer called again and told the sheriff, “Your sign’s no good. Let me put up my own sign?” The sheriff thought ‘anything for a quiet life’ and replied “Okay, go and put up your own damn sign.”
After three weeks of no calls from the farmer, curiosity got the better of the sheriff and he decided to give the Farmer a call. “How’s the problem with those speedsters? Did your sign do the trick?” “Oh, it sure did, and I’ve not lost one chicken since, so thanks for calling” and he hung up. This made the sheriff really curious and he thought to himself, “I’d better go out there and take a look at that sign, besides it might be something that we could use elsewhere to stop speeding...” So the sheriff drove out to the Farmer’s house, and his jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. It was spray-painted on a sheet of wood: NUDIST COLONY: GO SLOW AND WATCH OUT FOR THOSE GORGEOUS CHICKS!! 25

The godfather of motoring John DeLorean was a 6’ 4” automotive superstar and was the father of the Pontiac GTO, the brain behind the Firebird, instigator of the Grand Prix, and eponymous founder of the DeLorean Motor Company. With shaggy hair - dyed jet black, thick sideburns, Italian suits, and shirts unbuttoned to the navel, he had a taste for the high life and had a garage stacked deep with foreign sports cars. DeLorean grew up on the east side of Detroit during the Great Depression and studied for three degrees including two in mechanical engineering. After serving in World War II he eventually joined the Pontiac division of General Motors where he quickly made his mark. His greatest contribution was the GTO, which tripled Pontiac’s sales.
was more expensive than a Corvette or the Porsche 924 Turbo. The company hoped to sell 12,000 cars a year, but sold only 3000 in 1981. As his company dived further and further into the red, DeLorean continued to live the high life and became part of the drug-fueled 1980’s glamour scene. However, after Margaret Thatcher denied him a bailout, DeLorean became desperate and his involvement in a $60 million cocaine deal led to his arrest.
He was the driving force behind the Firebird and Grand Prix, soon becoming the head of Chevrolet in 1969. He divorced his first wife, dated Raquel Welch and Ursula Andress, then married a 20-yearold starlet. By 1971, Chevy were enjoying record sales but he resigned from his $650,000-a-year position. GM gave him a Cadillac franchise in Florida as a parting gift. He divorced again and married supermodel Christine Ferrare. DeLorean wasn’t 50 and was set for life, but still he wanted more.
Just before his trial, the British government closed the ailing Belfast factory. Two years later on August 15th 1984, DeLorean avoided prosecution, thanks to the ‘legal principle of entrapment’ but his DeLorean Motor Company was gone forever. In 1985 his luck changed thanks to a film called Back to the Future which featured the DMC12! Licensing fees from three films grossed over $416 million and helped keep DeLorean’s head above water as creditors galore dragged him to court over the next five years.
In 1978 DeLorean convinced the British government to build a factory that could produce a newly designed car. He told them that within 18 months the plant would be employing two thousand people, so they handed over £100 million to open the new factory in West Belfast.
He married for a fourth time in 1985 but kept a low profile through the 90’s before filing for bankruptcy in 1999. He died, aged 80, in New Jersey in 2005 due to complications from a stroke.
DeLorean’s plan was to build the first “ethical” sports car—a car that was sporty, fuel efficient, and safe. That car was the DeLorean DMC-12, with its distinct stainless steel body and gullwing doors. The car certainly caught the eye but in reality the DeLorean wasn’t much faster than any similar sized saloon. Let down by its French designed V6 engine, it didn’t handle well and
A rebel to the end, DeLorean was buried in Troy, Michigan, wearing a black motorcycle jacket, blue jeans, and a denim shirt. He was interred beneath a headstone featuring his iconic DeLorean DMC12, still with an outstanding warrant for his arrest back in England. Today it is thought that around 6000 DMC-12s (out of 9000) still exist. 27

LPA:
We find that often clients have not given any consideration to documenting Lasting Powers of Attorney (“LPA”). We take the view that an LPA is more important than documenting a Will, given that the client may directly benefit from the LPA as the LPA will take effect whilst they are still alive, whereas a Will only takes effect when they die. If someone becomes incapacitated without an LPA that would often require an Application for authority to act being made to the Office of Public Guardian (“OPG”). That can be a very lengthy and costly process. LPAs are legal documents that appoint someone you trust, known as an Attorney, to make decisions and do things on your behalf. There are two forms of LPA, one for Health and Welfare and the other for Property and Financial Affairs. Sometimes, the need for having a Property and Financial Affairs LPA can be side stepped by monies being held in Bank Accounts jointly, or having someone else act as an authorised signatory. Documented LPA(s) until they are registered with the OPG, cannot be used and relied upon by the appointed Attorneys.
are they more important than making a will? The completed LPA(s) do not need to be registered immediately, but cannot be acted upon until they are registered with the OPG. It should be appreciated that the OPG can take up to 8 weeks to effect the registration. The OPG currently charges £110.00 for registering each LPA. DW Solicitors costs for advising and documenting the LPA(s) are £375.00, plus VAT, if both Lasting Powers of Attorney are documented, or £250.00, plus VAT, for documenting one LPA. If you require further details, please contact Lynsey Ward on 01604 624222 or by email: lynseyward@dwsolicitors.com.

Lesson 3 centred around me being a wimp! Apparently I needed to whisk the eggs more vigorously before they went in the pan! According to Adolf, you need to add air and volume to get the end product nice and fluffy. By the time lesson 4 came round I was feeling totally inadequate and down trodden, especially after being told not to cook on a high heat. She exhorted: “It’s low and slow all the way . . . and whatever you do, do not, I repeat, do not, put them in the oven. It will be sacrilege” . . . . (okay boss!..anything else?) More misery followed as lesson 5 arrived! “Take them off the heat when they still look wet - not runny!!!” The residual heat will keep the eggs cooking for a minute or so. . . .(well I never!!). By the time lesson 6 came, I was strongly thinking about committing murder!! “You need to stir it properly! Not only will the eggs be ruined, but the pan will be an absolute pain to clean!” . . . (not that she did the washing up!!). Joking apart, my eggs were spot on! . . . .and a few weeks later I was invited round for brunch where my auntie served me scrambled eggs in 3 refreshingly simple ways: Firstly she split a croissant in half, put in a slice of ham and some scrambled egg inside. Really nice! Secondly she served my eggs sprinkled with chopped mixed fresh herbs including flat leaf parsley, chives and dill. Very nice! Lastly she spiced them up. Having melted the butter, she fried some chopped onion and mixed it in before adding the eggs with some chopped chilli. Very very nice! Next time she’s promised to demonstrate her scambled eggs with porcini and prosciutto! I really can’t wait! So, what did I learn from my aunties visit? Quite simply, once the basics have been mastered, the scrambled egg world is your oyster . . . . and next time she pops round on a Sunday, I won’t answer the door!
Aunties always know best . .
I don’t mind a spot of cooking, but there are certain tasks that I could never master. Take scrambled eggs. They look so simple, but I always managed to end up with either a stodgy mess that looked like it had just come out of a volcano or some sort of rigid mixture that you could use to repoint a chimney! This culinary nightmare went on for many years until the fateful day that my closest relative (logistically, that is) got bored and decided to drop in for an unexpected cup of tea, but gatecrashed my late Sunday morning anti-hangover treat scrambled eggs on toast. So, step in one know-it-all auntie who instantly put me right and then started barking out orders like a sergeant major! Lesson 1, so I was told, was “Never add liquid.” Adding milk, cream or water is an absolute no! no! . . .. and can cause the eggs to separate during cooking resulting in overcooking which apparently renders the meal flavourless. Lesson 2 centred around seasoning, where I was told in no uncertain terms to add the salt at the end . . . and never before! Whilst standing to attention, I was told that adding salt any earlier would break down the eggs and leave an all too familiar, watery mess. “Did you remember to add ground black pepper to the mix?” 30

regarding the use of equations. AlKhwarizmi’s descriptions paved the way for further studies in algebra, arithmetic, and trigonometry. The latter enabled Middle Eastern scholars to calculate values for angles and sides of triangles and to advance studies in astronomy.
Maths:
it wasn’t all his fault!
Those who built on al-Khwarizmi’s work developed new ways to use decimal fractions and pioneered new techniques to determine area and volume. Middle Eastern architects and builders used such advanced methods long before their Western counterparts, who only became familiar with them during the Crusades. They later took the knowledge home, aided by educated Muslim captives and immigrants.
When people measure their weight or add up the cost of their groceries, many of us are not aware that we are using Hindu-Arabic numerals. The basis of the modern number system that uses the digits zero to nine appears to have developed in India and evolved in the West by way of medieval scholars who wrote in Arabic.
In time, al-Khwarizmi’s works were translated into Latin. The Italian mathematician Fibonacci (c. 1170-1250), also known as Leonardo of Pisa, is generally credited with popularising Hindu-Arabic numerals in the West. He learned about them during his travels in the Mediterranean world.
In fact, evidence suggests that prototypes of modern numerals were being used in India as early as the third century BC. Foremost among them was a man named Muhammad ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi, who is thought to have been born in what is now known as Uzbekistan, in about 780 C.E. Al-Khwarizmi is called the great hero of Arabic mathematics and wrote about the practical use of decimals, clarifying and popularising a method for solving certain mathematical problems.
Al-Khwarizmi’s explanations took centuries to become well-known. But now his methods and the mathematics related to them are the very lifeblood of science and technology, not to mention commerce and industry. To illustrate the simplicity of Arabic numbers, the number 188 is CLXXXVIII in Roman numerals.
The term al-jabr in its Arabic title, Kitab al-jabr wa’l-muqabala, is the source of the English word ‘algebra’. Algebra, which is considered by senior mathematicians as the single most important mathematical tool ever devised, and one that underpins every facet of science. Consequently, there must be countless generations of students that curse al-Khwarizmi, including me! However, senior mathematicians all agree that algebra is the single most important mathematical tool ever devised.
When it comes to numbers and mathematics the legacy left by medieval Middle Eastern scholars is immense and indisputable. Today the Western World is a leader in technology, but in Europe, Hindu-Arabic numerals only became commonly known during the 15th century. Although modern western numerals may be a conglomeration from different sources, as far as is known, the country that first used the largest number of these numeral forms was India.
Centuries later, Western mathematicians, including Galileo and Fibonacci, held al-Khwarizmi in high esteem because of his clear explanations

Park Life The Friends group has worked for improvements to Abington Park for over thirteen years. In that time we have carried out a range of volunteering activities and events and raised tens of thousands of pounds for improvements to the facilities in the park. It now boasts a rich range of attractions for visitors of all ages. It is all the sadder then to report that the area, appreciated by so many, is often spoiled by the actions of a minority. Those who use the park formally come together under the auspices of the Park Management Committee, where it was reported recently that not only is the problem of litter and dog fouling continuing but that the water areas, the lakes and the small boating lake are all vulnerable. In addition to the threats posed to wildlife, the clubs and others who use these areas for fishing, sailing model yachts etc. have to regularly carry out cleaning and clearing to make the waters safe to use. Safety issues arise as well to those who cycle at top speed through the park creating dangers for pedestrians, young children and others in the park. The problems are now so serious that the Committee is to combine efforts over the summer months to raise public awareness, create a climate of greater public responsibility and engagement in maintaining the safety of the park and encouraging greater care and consideration. The area cannot be policed all the time; it is down to all of us to be vigilant, report incidents and, if possible, to take photographs of perpetrators. Why should the few spoil this beautiful parkland enjoyed and valued by so many? Anne Stevens, Secretary, Friends of Abington Park friendsofabingtonpark@gmail.com www.abingtonpark.org.uk

children to specialist hospitals across the country. Local babies have already benefitted from this service, where time saved can mean a life saved. The charity receives no government funding and we rely entirely on donations to raise the £1,700 we need for each rescue mission. Your support will help keep us flying. The following gives you an idea of our operating costs £20 could pay for 1200L of Oxygen to be carried on board the Children’s Air Ambulance, helping critically ill children to breathe. £36 could pay for enough fuel to keep one of our helicopters flying for 10 minutes so our crew can get patients the help they need. £60 could pay for straps to safely secure patients before and during their flight, allowing our crew to focus on treatment. We want children to grow into adults, we want adults to live longer and we want bereavement through trauma to become rare. To find out how you can get involved, by volunteering your time or making a donation visit: www.theairambulanceservice.org.uk
Something to consider Every day of the year, Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance is helping save more lives. Our critical care paramedics, trauma doctors and pilots fly an average of three rescue missions a day. Within minutes they can be on the ground delivering lifesaving care at road traffic collisions, sports events, and industrial accidents or for medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, stroke or accidents in the home. The air ambulance gives people the very best chance of survival and recovery. Our helicopter can fly at 185mph and carries the very latest lifesaving equipment. Our air ambulance team is also supported by a rapid response vehicle, which provides valuable backup for incidents close to the helicopter base or when the weather makes it too dangerous to fly. In addition, the charity has set up a new nationwide Children’s Air Ambulance service to fly critically ill

30 years of care through excellence
2015 marks the 30th Anniversary of the foundation of Abington Park Veterinary Surgery! The doors first opened to the pet-owning public in April 1985 – my founder partner, John Prior, and his wife, Linda, ran our new veterinary practice venture for the first six months while I remained in my assistant’s job in a Southampton practice to facilitate cash flow, joining them in September of that year. New clients quickly began to register and the practice grew rapidly. Any spare time during the week, and weekends, was spent either with paintbrush (including my wife Jo) or power drill in hand in between caring for hospitalised patients and providing our 24-hour emergency on call! As our client base continued to grow our other partners, Richard Edwards, Andrew Jagoe and Jeremy Onyett joined us over the coming years, and we expanded out of the Abington surgery into Moulton in 2002 and then Acorn in 2007. In 2006, after 21 years, John returned to his roots in East Anglia where he continues to work as a referral orthopaedic surgeon. Although, ‘back in the day’, we did have the wheel,
colour TV and radiography (!) it is fair to say that we have seen major technological advances since then, both generally (computers and mobile phones) and from a veterinary perspective (ultrasound, CT, MRI, thromboelalstography to name a few). From our original team of four we have grown to around eighty strong now in 2015! There is no doubt that the Abington Park Veterinary Group of today is a world apart from those early days. However, I believe the ethos of what we all do, and strive towards, remains, very definitely, the same – namely, to do the very best we can for every patient that comes through our doors. Wishing Abington Park Veterinary Surgery a very Happy 30th Anniversary! Nigel Anthony 46

Despite that terrific 20-17 English triumph in Sydney, the final itself has seen a tradition of lowscoring matches and a surprising fact is that only 11 tries have been scored over the seven World finals! South Africa appear to be the main culprits, winning try-less finals to take the title in both 1995 and 2007. In those games the Springboks employed a number of heavyweight thugs to nullify their opposition and one in particular, Os Du Randt, is one of only three players to have played in two winning finals. Can you name the others? Another barnstorming Bok was Brendon Venter who had a liking for stamping on opponents faces and was promptly banned from the 1999 final. The tournament has also produced some of the highest scoring games on record. In 1995 the All Blacks absolutely smashed Japan 145-17, racking up 21 tries in the process. Rumour has it that after the game the winners pigged out on sushi and Castlemaine XXXX, while the losers were last seen working on a new bridge over the River Kwai. The Aussies enjoyed a 142-0 win over Namibia in 2003, with two hat tricks and an impressive five tries by Chris Latham. The farce wasn’t shown on TV and the discovery of 15 pairs of handcuffs in the losers changing room led some to believe that Sepp Blatter was one of the tournament organisers! The Kiwi’s also inflicted a 101-3 battering on Italy in 1999, although one female Kiwi broadcaster told her audience that it was a cricket match! Closer to home, the French have never won the trophy, but were runners up in 1987 and 1999. They also reached the semi’s in 1995, 2003 and 2007. An Irish spokesman suggested that things would have been different if the French had included Arsenal’s Thierry Henry – apparently his exceptional handling skills are second to none! Finally, if you’re aiming to watch the tournament from the comfort of your armchair, rumours suggest the BBC are looking to replace the arrogant, Jeremy Guscott whose head has again swelled in size meaning he can’t get through the studio door. Chris Ashton was mooted as a replacement, but BBC chiefs are concerned that he might jump ship at the last minute. Ps. The other two time winners were the Australians John Eales and Tim Horan.
REVISITED When the first game of the 2015 Rugby World Cup kicks off on September 18th, you may not know that proceedings will be started by the same whistle that has started the previous seven tournaments – the whistle is about 100 years old and some think that it is owned by ex-referee / poser, Ed Morrison who had it from new. Prior to the first ever competition in 1987, rather crazily, the U.S.A. were technically the reigning champions because they were the last winners of a Rugby Olympic gold – back in 1924! Despite being ranked 18th in world rugby, the Americans were the first name on the team list. Entry was by invite only, and controversially the Yanks got the nod ahead of the talented Western Samoans. Other uninvited guests included the Springboks, due to an international sporting boycott against apartheid. Needless to say, the Yanks would have faired better if they’d played their basketball team and New Zealand claimed the crown after beating France in a final that would be repeated 24 years later – ironically, with the same scoreline! The All Blacks have an excellent record, contesting a semi-final in every tournament except 2007. Despite their excellence, it is hard to believe that they have never managed to defeat their greatest rivals, Australia in a Rugby World Cup. The Kiwi’s won the trophy in 1987 and 2011 and came runners up in 1995, and semi-finalists in 1991 and 1999. This nudges them in front of the Aussies who won in 1991 and 1999. They bettered their semi-final slot of 1987 when they were memorable runners up in 2003 when the white army marched down under and snatched the Webb Ellis Trophy with a Johnny Wilkinson drop goal in extra time. Jason Robinson’s electric sprint to the corner is still a vivid memory, perhaps more so than Jonah Lomu’s creative use of Mike Catt as a doormat back in 1999! 49

Cherry Cheesecake in a Jar Serves: 4 Cook time: Ready in 30 minutes plus cooling and chilling Ready in: 30-60 Minutes Difficulty Rating: 1 Syns per serving: 4½ Print recipe Ingredients: 1½ level tsp arrowroot; Juice of 1 orange; 1 tbsp sweetener; 250g cherries, stoned and destalked, plus whole cherries to decorate; 5 amaretti biscuits, roughly crushed; 300g quark; 200g fat free natural Greek yogurt; 4 whole almonds, shelled and roughly chopped Method: Measure out 100ml of water and mix 1 tablespoon with the arrowroot to form a paste. Set aside. Put the rest of the water in a small pan with the orange juice and 1 teaspoon of sweetener. Bring to the boil over a high heat, then stir in the arrowroot paste until thickened. Return to the boil, add the cherries and simmer for 3-4 minutes or until the cherries have softened slightly. Set aside to cool. Divide the amaretti biscuits between four 200ml jars or dessert glasses and spoon a few cherries and some of the syrup into each one. Put 250g of quark with the yogurt and the remaining
sweetener into a bowl and whisk until smooth. Stir in most of the cherries and the syrup, divide between the jars or glasses and smooth the tops. Chill for at least 15 minutes. Meanwhile, dry-fry the almonds in a pan over a high heat for 1-2 minutes or until just golden. Top the jars or glasses with a dollop of the remaining quark and spoon over the remaining cherries and syrup. Scatter over the almonds and decorate with whole cherries to serve. 50

It all seems a distant memory now, but back in April I spent 8 days from start to finish sledding through the Arctic wilderness of both Norway and Sweden, in temperatures not getting above freezing during the day and below -10 by night. A typical day would start around 5am when it was light. I would wander down to the frozen lake or running stream to get some water for that day, not only for our breakfast and hot drinks, but also to fill our cold water bottles up. As the air is very dry there, it was very important to drink between 2-3 litres of water a day to avoid dehydration. After breakfast it was time to feed our trusted furry companions - there were 105 in total. Then start to pack away all our kit into the sledges, and pack away the tent. When all of this was completed it was time to harness up your dogs, take them off the night lines, attach them to the sledge in the correct order and then pack away the night line for use later that day. All this done, the dogs would be barking and howling in excitement awaiting the off. Brakes and anchor released we were off, it would then go all quiet from the dogs and the only thing you could hear was the snow crunching under the weight of the sledge and the howling winds. After several hours sledging up and down mountains helping and encouraging the dogs, especially up hills, it would be time for a quick 1520 minute break before continuing on to the next camp. Some days we were lucky with the camps as there was a hut for a toilet, but most of the time you would dig a hole and go “Self catering” as it was all part of the challenge!!!!! When we stopped in the evening it was all hands Family Run ss Busine
Arctic trek raises over 4K on deck to sort the dogs out first, night line out, attach the dogs, remove their harnesses, feed them and then attend to getting your tent put up, (whilst snowing). When all this was completed it was time to eat, which were all dehydrated meals that you just added boiling water to, sort your kit out and then go to bed to keep warm. After little sleep, due to both howling dogs and winds you would start all over again. This has got to be the most physical, mental and exhilarating challenging experience I have ever achevied in my life and I have come away with some amazing memories. I spent the best part of 7 months training for this, rowing 8km’s and cycling 12km’s nearly every day. The days were long and sometimes very lonely as the sledges in front had pulled away and the ones behind were also nowhere to be seen, I think the hardest thing for me was not being able to communicate with the outside world (my wife, Karen) for 4 days as its the longest we have been apart in nearly 25 years. I have raised just over £3500 for the Bedfordshire & Northamptonshire MS Therapy Centre by doing this challenge. It was worth it!! It’s still not to late to donate: www.Justgiving.com/Tony-Skoyles1

Industrial automation researchers are trying to develop a robotic arm with improved dexterity and flexibility. So, what was the source of the researchers inspiration? The unexpected answer is the nature of an elephant’s trunk!
www.ovensaints.co.uk Single ovens Double ovens Aga’s Hobs Microwaves BBQ’s l
Weighing some 140kg, the elephant’s trunk has been called the most versatile and useful appendage on our planet. The multipurpose tool can serve as a nose, a straw, an arm, or a hand. With it, the elephant can breathe, smell, drink, grab, or even trumpet a deafening blast! But that is not all. The elephant’s trunk has some 40,000 muscle fibres that allow it to move in any direction. Trunks actually have “fingers.” African elephants have two while Asian elephants only have one. That’s why the former is able to grasp objects by pinching the opposing tips of the trunk while the latter must wrap its trunk round objects like a boa constrictor. Using the tip of its trunk, an elephant can even pick up a small coin. At the same time, the elephant can use its trunk to lift loads of at least 270kg - in real terms, it means hoisting Ulambayaryn Byambajav, a world champion sumo wrestler, would be just as easy as me picking up a bag of peanuts!

Developers hope that imitating the dexterous properties of the elephant’s trunk will help them create superior robots for both domestic and industrial applications. So far they have created a completely new assistance system compared to conventional robots, which they hope will enable humans and machines to work together efficiently and without danger for the first time. But what I want to know is who actually developed the elephant’s trunk? Or was it purely evolution?

Abington Vale Wives
In time their numbers grew too big for her home and they hired a room at the then Abington Vale Middle School (now a building site). By now the chat had developed into a meeting with the occasional Speaker. When the hire charges increased they decided to meet in different homes for the now fortnightly meeting. Crockery and a teapot were purchased and were passed to the next host – and still are to this day. By now about 20 ladies were involved and over the 50 years we’ve lost some and gained some, our current membership standing at 17. We have a varied programme of speakers, cinema and theatre trips, walks, Christmas/New Year and Summer meals. We regularly support charities, both local and overseas with donations. We always welcome new members.
On Tuesday June 9th we celebrated 50 years of Abington Vale Wives. We held this in one of our members gardens in Weston Favell by way of coffee and biscuits with a glass of sparkling wine and a piece of Celebration Cake. We invited ladies who had been members of the group, back for the celebration. Most had moved often due to job changing and other circumstances. There were 26 ladies at our celebration including 11 previous members (one of whom had travelled down from Derbyshire). 1964/65 saw Abington Vale partially developed mainly Landcross Drive, Meshaw Crescent and side roads but mainly open space. The young mothers had no meeting place on the estate so one of them living in Lynmouth Avenue invited several neighbours to her house for a social evening. Belonging as she did, to Abington Avenue Church she suggested that the then Minister joined them for a short chat and a prayer. He left and they continued to enjoy chatting with a cuppa. 56

During the past few weeks Bridgewater Residents Association has been visibly active. The two benches situated on the Milverton field area have both been “named” with specially engraved plaques, furthermore a flowering cherry tree, planted earlier this year – located in Bridgewater Drive, to replace a similar damaged one - has also received similar recognition. A further enhancement on the Milverton field has been the repaint of the climbing frame as the original paintwork had long since worn away. The frame was treated to a fresh coat of environmentally friendly olive green paint, donated courtesy of Homebase, Riverside. Money was also given by one of our members, June, to assist with the purchase of cleaning materials. It is hoped the revitalised climbing frame will be accompanied by a “3-swing” play activity apparatus. However, we are currently £2000 short to complete the purchase of this item which we believe would benefit the younger generation within our community. All donations warmly welcome to complete this project.
