Six common fitness mistakes by Becca Mclachlan Are you are a newbie to exercise? Or maybe you are familiar with the whole fitness thing but are just not getting any results? Either way, whichever level or category you fall under, there are several habits you need to avoid in order to help you reach your goals. 1. Too much cardio and not enough strength. This is a common mistake especially with women worrying that they will bulk up if they train with weights also doing too much cardio actually will result in muscle loss. Muscle is important as its what gives our bodies shape and the more muscle you have the more fat you’ll burn! So ladies don’t be afraid to pick up those weights.

doing all the working out! 5. Doing too much too soon. When you first start exercising don’t try and do too much too soon. To avoid injury build up gradually to give your body time to adjust and choose an exercise session that is suitable for your fitness level. It’s also really important to schedule in rest days to allow you to recover from your workouts

2. Doing the same routine or exercise class every week. Our bodies are really clever and soon adapt to exercise. To get results its really important that you change your exercise routine regularly. 3. Not performing a proper warm up or cool down. Many injuries are caused by not warming up properly and soreness can be prevented by stretching after your workout. Before you start exercising the body needs to be prepared for the work that will follow, start with some gentle cardio which steadily raises the heart rate followed by imitating movements you will later do in your workout. At the end of each session perform static stretches holding each stretch for about 20 seconds.

6. Eating the wrong food. You can’t out train a bad diet! Eating a healthy clean diet is crucial if you are looking to improve your health and lose weight. If you don’t combine a healthy diet with exercise you’ll always struggle to reach your goal. To receive my weekly tips and advice go to www.metabolic-booster.com and sign up on my Metabolic Booster apprentice programme for FREE. www.becca-mclachlan.com www.metabolic-booster.com becca@becca-mclachlan.com

4. Too much chatting. Gyms are a great place to meet up with friends, in fact if you have a gym buddy you are much more likely to turn up as you won’t want to let your friend down. But when you are training try and stay focus on your exercise routine so its not just your mouth thats

Memories of July ‘66

called the White City! Overnight, a magic wand turned a greyhound track into a football stadium after Wembley’s owners insisted that a regular dog race night should take precedence! In the game, Roger Hunt was staking his claim for a permanent spot, ahead of the more dynamic Jimmy Greaves. Hunt netted both in a 2-0 win and Greavesie was consigned to the biggest disappointment of his career as an injury meant he’d now be one of Alf’s bench-boys. Meanwhile, with the Germans enjoying an easy life in their group, one of the other favourites, Brazil were playing up north and getting the rough treatment! Over the years many a southern softy had suffered similar fates and likewise, they were soon on their way home. Further north, in Teeside, the Italians suffered the ultimate embarrassment when a gent by the name of Pak Do Ik upset the pasta bowl when his 42nd minute strike sent North Korea through to the quarters. Before the finals, the Koreans and Australia ended up being the only teams taking part in an Asia/Oceania qualifying farce when the African nationals withdrew in protest at not being given a direct entry. By the time the quarters came round, things were hotting up. Portugal were looking tasty with the ebullient Eusebio (pictured left in red) scoring for fun. While the Germans remained chilled, the Soviets weren’t exactly slacking and starved the Hungarians in a 2-1 win. Argentina adopted a different approach, bullying their way through to the last eight. If it wasn’t the opposition, it was the officials who suffered intimidation. Unfortunately for them, when the Argies took on England they came up against two stubborn midgets! Firstly, wearing No. 6, Norbert Stiles usually kicked anything that moved! Secondly, German referee, Rudy Kreitlein looked totally disinterested with his appointment. At this time of the year he’d usually be sunning himself on a Spanish Costa but instead had to endure a constant barrage of complaints and moaning - word had it that he said it was just like being at home with the missus when the garden needed doing! records

50th Anniversary

At the age of 12, I was a football mad kid, who like many others, only remembered big names and goalscorers. The ’66 World Cup was the first real showpiece event in my life. There had been Cup Finals on TV and a few jaunts to Fulham, Brentford or West Ham, but there was a real buzz about the fact that England were hosting the most prestigious tournament in the world. My memory recalls there being little or no hype about England’s chances in the preceding months and the name ‘Alf Ramsey’ attracted little attention, even in newspapers. The drab opening ceremony, which was reminiscent of some sort of military parade without the artillery, was in desperate need of a choreographer and its after-effects rubbed off on the teams. England & Uruguay played out a bore-draw where both sides were lucky to get nil. As usual the Germans opened with intent, spanking the Swiss 5-0 and notable winners in the other groups included Italy, the Soviets and of course, Brazil. In the next game the hosts came up against a mob whose day time jobs probably included mowing lawns! After half an hour they were fancying their chances of a place in a possible lottery draw if teams were tied. Step up to the plate, one Bobby Charlton! His blistering 35 yard strike shattered the Mexican plot and when Hunt added a second they threw in their poncho’s! Next up came the French who were still bleating about the fact that their game with Uruguay had been moved to a part time venue 9

E

History records the dismissal of Antonio Rattin at 35 minutes, but in reality it should have been much sooner! Geoff Hurst’s glancing header has remained long in my memory because when it came to a choice of viewing, there wasn’t one! Both TV channels (yes, there were only two in those days) opted to screen the England game followed by highlights of the other games. At Goodison Park, one wondered if the North Koreans had too many E numbers in their diets as they led Eusebio’s men 3-0, but a couple of cans of Red Bull roused the Portuguese and they became the hosts next hurdle. The Germans were still looking ominous after impressively flattening Uruguay 4-0 in a game that saw English ref, Jim Finney send off two South Americans in a 5 minute spell. Arguably, England’s toughest test took place at Wembley on a balmy night but Bobby Charlton’s boot opened the scoring after half an hour. A second with only 10 minutes left sealed it despite Eusebio’s penalty sparking late panic. Alf’s boys held out to secure a date

with the Germans who probably condemned the Russian team to a long holiday in Siberia. Not wanting to bore you further, but the rest is history. If you’re a sucker for a fairy tale ending and can stand the music, take a look at what unfolded on July 30th, 1966 on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx3AecF3ImI

In particular, nowadays the regular daily commute to earn a crust is a real bind for most of us. Whether it’s in the car being snarled up in amongst ever-increasing scores of vehicles making the school run or fighting to find a seat on public transport it’s hardly an ideal way to ease yourself into a days work! By the time you get to your office, the chances are that your stress levels are already a third of the way up the scale. If you can identify with this scenario, then take some inspiration from James Robertson. This 56-year-old Detroit resident’s work commute consisted of a 42 mile round trip every day and involved 21 miles of walking all thanks to Detroit’s extremely sketchy bus service and a car that broke down over ten years ago. Robertson is a humble man, who works the 2pm-10pm shift. The job pays little over $10 an hour, yet he has a perfect attendance record! This unrivaled reliability propelled him into headline material in his local press. QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

The

Commuter Then 19-year-old University student, Evan Leedy saw the story and launched a GoFundMe crowdfunding site. He set an ambitious target of $5,000, enough to get Robertson a modest but dependable car. Amazingly, strangers from around the world showed their support for this quiet Detroit man who never asked anyone for help. The fund swelled to over $300,000. However, the icing on the cake came a week later. Suburban Ford of Sterling Heights, Michigan, gave Robertson a gift to recognise and relieve the years he spent slogging without fail to the job that he loves - a brand new Ford Taurus in metallic red with black interior. Surely, this could only happen in America!

N6036 was also short of fuel and landed at Bircham Newton but overshot the landing strip and ran through a hedge, fortunately without injury and too much damage. Others landed safely at Waterbeach and Honington, although the latters tailwheel doors had been ripped off. While all this was happening, Flight Sergeant B.K. Madgwick was gently nursing his aircraft, N6033, towards the safety of home. Due to flak damage, his navigation instruments and wireless had been rendered useless and the aircraft was icing up badly. Looking for Oakington seemed impossible but in actual fact, they had flown right over the airfield and were now heading towards Northampton. With Oakington unable to contact them and their fuel gauges reading zero, things were looking serious. The flight engineer, W.H. Robinson juggled the balance cocks trying to save small amounts of fuel that remained in the tanks. Madgwick tried to get the aircraft on an even keel as early auto-pilot systems were unreliable. When the fuel pressure lights started to glow red, he checked as well as he could that they were clear of any towns and gave the order to bail out. Unknown to them they were approximately east of Northampton, somewhere between Billing and Moulton. While descending, Robinson saw the aircraft bank to the left then straighten up but it was slowly losing altitude. He finally lost sight of it as it merged with the dark background, then a few seconds later came a flash as the aircraft crashed and to his horror he saw it had come down in the town. Although it was said that he originated from the area, in truth, Robinson probably didn’t recognise it as Northampton. Apparently, the plane came in over Jimmy’s End, dead in line with Gold Street, getting lower and lower until it hit Burtons, scraping its way past the Grand Hotel, the left wing demolishing buildings in College Street.

Nightmare on Gold Street Take a walk in town. Go up Gold Street towards All Saints’ Church and everything appears normal enough, just like any other main street around the town centre. There is nothing to make you suddenly stop and ask yourself ‘what is that and how did it happen?’ If you approach the Grand Hotel, take a look up at the window sills and the brickwork and you may notice slight damage and chipping. Was it caused by a careless builder or a clumsy scaffolder? . . . . July 14th & 15th, 1941, R.A.F. Oakington in Cambridgeshire: Six crews of No.7 squadron, flying Short Stirling Mk 1 bombers were briefed to bomb Hannover in Germany. Their bomb load counted over 100 including about forty incendiaries. After take-off they were briefed to rendezvous with a main force of 67 Wellington’s, 33 Hampden’s and 30 Halifax’s. At the time, Hannover was heavily defended and several of the Stirlings were damaged by flak. The return journey became a nightmare with storms and strong headwinds causing the aircraft to use more fuel than had been anticipated. The Stirlings were being penalised for an Air Ministry ruling that their wing span should not exceed 100 feet, so that they could fit into existing hangars. As a result, the aircraft struggled to exceed 16,000 feet so were unable to climb above the bad weather conditions. Stirling N6022 had two engines shot out and with its third engine misfiring, planned to ditch in the sea but managed to make the coast, south east of Norwich. The aircraft eventually crashed at 03.40 hours near Newton Flotman. 19

E

The rest of the aircraft, or what was left of it, finally came to rest alongside All Saints’ Church in Mercer’s Row (pictured right). Amongst the wreckage lay two unexploded 500 pound bombs that were later removed by R.A.F. disposal experts. Robinson came down safely in Abington Park and was picked up by police, who wanted to take him to hospital. He assured them that he was fine and requested they take him to the crash site. He was concerned about the damage it might have caused and on arrival he was shocked to see many bodies strewn around Gold Street! Thankfully, they turned out to be tailors’ dummies from Burtons. It was extremely fortunate that the crash happened at 04.15 hours in the morning when there was hardly anyone about. Operational Records taken from No.7 Squadron say that the Chief Constable of Northampton, John Williamson, phoned Oakington in complaint saying “I can’t have this!” In reality, only one civilian was injured, a Mr. E. Gross who fell off his bicycle as he was returning from

work and suffered a broken leg plus a badly gashed head. Tragically, when Madgwick, the pilot bailed out, he somehow slipped out of his harness. As was habit with many pilots, it is thought that he may have loosened his straps to become more comfortable when sitting at the controls and forgot to readjust them prior to jumping. He fell to his death, coming down on Kingsthorpe recreation ground. His parachute was found one and a half miles away.

An interview with

6. What was your proudest moment in professional sport? It would definitely be winning the T20 with the Steelbacks in 2013. We were massive underdogs but played some incredible cricket and it was the first trophy Northants had won in 21 years. I’m really proud to have been part of that team. 7. I hear you’re a bit of a musician. Pray tell . . . I love music and spend a lot of my down time playing the guitar and singing. Back in 2007, I started jamming with a couple of local musicians and eventually we started a band called Juliet The Sun. We had a great time and in 2009 we released a single, Time For Heroes, that did okay and we did a UK tour - it was some of the best days of my life. Although we disbanded, I still love to play. 8. In your view, is there any special talent currently coming through at the county? This year we have some very talented young players in our squad but one of our Academy lads, Harry Adair, has really impressed me. I’ve only seen him play on a couple of occasions but he’s definitely one to look out for in the future. 9. How do you see the new season shaping up? Can the county be a force? I genuinely believe we can be. We’re looking to be competitive in all competitions but I definitely see us being strong in the shorter formats again. We have a team full of match winners and that’s what’s required in white ball cricket. The challenge will be keeping everyone fit but we have a great backroom staff to help us with that. 10. Have you any plans for life after cricket? Good question! I do as much as I can off the field to give myself the experience and skills I’ll need when I finish playing the game. I am involved with a digital media agency, Mau Media, which is very exciting. We’re lucky to work with some very cool, and very big clients. I love trying to help businesses build their brand and connect on a deeper, emotional level with their customers - it’s great to be a part of.

Steven Crook . . . the Northants all-rounder . . .

1. Tell us about your path into professional cricket? Playing in England happened by chance really. I grew up in South Australia and was part of the youth and academy system there. I came to play league cricket in Huddersfield and was approached by Lancashire for a trial. It went well and I was offered a contract straight away. It was a dream come true to be a professional cricketer. 2. You must have an all-time cricketing hero? I love Shoaib Akhtar because he was box office. Long run up, sprinting into the crease and launching the ball down the wicket as fast as he could. I love anyone who either smashes the ball miles or bowls quick. I find that really entertaining! 3. You’ve had your fair share of injuries. Is this down to being an all rounder? I think it’s just the nature of playing sport as you put your body through so much force and so many unnatural movements. Injuries are hard to accept, particularly when you’ve done everything you can to prevent it. Dealing with the ups and downs of sport is a massive mental battle at times. 4. How did the move back to Northampton come about? I was in and out of the Lancashire first team and getting pretty frustrated because I felt ready for a run in the team but we had a great squad so it was proving difficult. I got a phone call out of the blue from Kepler Wessels, who was manager at the time, asking if I wanted to be a Steelback. That was in the middle of 2005 and I jumped at the chance. Since then, I’ve loved every minute playing for Northamptonshire. 5. I hear you get involved with charities. Can you tell us why and who they are? In 2015, I started a fundraising initiative called Runs4Funds. The aim is to use cricket to raise money to help local, Northamptonshire people, to improve their lives. This year we’re supporting a local charity called Thomas’s Fund - who provide music therapy for terminally ill children - and all the money we raise will go straight to them. All the details of how you can get involved are on runs4funds.org and any support people might be able to give would be incredible. 22

Family History – Beyond the Family Tree . . . You may imagine that researching your family tree is about looking online these days. Whilst the internet makes it easier to get started, there is a wealth of information available locally. Tucked away in an unassuming building at Wootton Hall Park, Northampton, the Northamptonshire Records Office is home to thousands of documents going back up to 800 years. That’s a lot of information about the county and its residents – and the public can access the original documents for themselves. For family historians, the Record Office can flesh out the stories that a simple family tree cannot show. So let’s look at some of the records that might help you trace the stories of your ancestors. Wills The Record Office has the wills and probate records of local people going back as far as the 15th century. Wills can help you confirm family connections – who left what goods to whom, for example. They can also give an insight into how the families were living because of the items and amounts of money listed in the will. It is so much richer to see this than to just have a date of death on a family tree! Poor Law Records The poor had an official “home” parish, and from 1697 needed a Settlement Certificate to move to a different parish and receive relief there. A Removal Order could be issued to send them back to their home parish. Both of these can add detail to the story of your ancestors. From 1834, workhouses became key to the way the poor were helped. Different Poor Law Unions kept records of those coming into and leaving the workhouses up to their abolition in 1930, so these records are rich with names. Other Interesting Records Is there a story in your family that Great Uncle Tom avoided going to fight in World War One? The records of all the appeals about conscription are here, including any supporting paperwork such as letters from employers or neighbours.

Does nobody talk about what happened to your Grandmother’s sister? Perhaps the big secret is that she was committed to the County Lunatic Asylum. You can consult the admissions registers or case books for dates between 1876 and 1911. Perhaps a relative of yours is amongst the thousands of admissions recorded by Northampton General Hospital in the 19th century. The Record Office has papers and photographs relating to locations all over the county. Might there be an old photograph of where you or your parents grew up or worked? Would you recognise the high street as it looked 60 or more years ago? What about old images of the school that your children attend, or the church Sunday School? A Helping Hand The Record Office is a fascinating resource, but it can be hard to know where to begin. Staff are on hand to help guide you through how to find the documents you are looking for, and even to help you make some sense of what you find in them. For more in depth questions, there’s a very reasonably priced research service that can take your family history to a deeper level, or provide the key to the next stage for you. Of course, not every record still exists, and not every person in Northamptonshire will have had their name written down in a document. But when you hold in your hand a piece of paper from 150 years ago that tells you something you did not know about your family, it beats any bit of online research hands down. It is often said that crime doesn’t pay, but back in July 1978, in Portugal, it possibly did! The largest number of convicts ever to escape simultaneously from a maximum security prison is 124 and the proud record holder of this amazing feat is the Alcoente Prison near Lisbon. During the weeks leading up to the escape, the prison warders had noticed that attendances had fallen at film shows which oddly enough, included ‘The Great Escape’ and also that 220 knives and a huge quantity of electric cable had disappeared. One guard conceded that they were planning to look for the missing items but never got round to it! The warders hadn’t even noticed some gaping holes in the wall because they were covered with posters. Nor did they detect the large quantities of spades, chisels, water hoses and electric drills that had been amassed by the inmates. The night before the breakout one guard had noticed that of the 36 prisoners in his block only 13 were present. He later claimed this was ‘normal’ because inmates sometimes missed roll-call or hid, but usually turned up for

Portugese Porridge! breakfast the following morning. They only found out about the escape at 6.30am the next morning when one of the prisoners told one of the staff! Another staff member later claimed that the searchlights were their worst enemy because they had been directed at the warders faces, dazzling them and had made it impossible to see anything around the prison walls. When the guards eventually checked they found that exactly half of the jails population was missing. By way of explanation the justice minister Dr Santos Pais announced that the escape was a ‘normal’ occurence and was part of the ‘legitimate desire of the prisoner to regain his liberty.’ 29

Get creative

with your pots this summer

Your pots can be so much more than just “Flower Power”, don’t get me wrong here at Cramden Nursery we are well known for our love of flowers. In fact we grow over 55,000 beautiful flowering Pelargoniums (aka Geraniums) every year. And I ‘m not suggesting to ditch the flowers but to add to them and enhance them with great foliage colours, shapes and scents this summer. Plant pots are an effective way of brightening up any patio. Or, when placed either side of your front door, they can welcome you home at the end of the day. Fill them with summer flowering bedding plants such as Pelargoniums (aka Geraniums) or try Verbenna or Calibracoha (Million Bells) and they will bring that summer feel to any home. When planning your pots don’t just think about the colour combination, how about adding height, scent and foliage colour to your pots? A tall specimen plant in the centre or towards the rear of the pot will make a great feature. Here at Cramden Nursery we grow Antik Pelargoniums (aka climbing Geraniums), these tall growing varieties make up into impressive plants very quickly. They will need garden canes for support and will make a great focal point for your pot. Why not plant Ivy Leaf trailing Pelargoniums around the edge of the pot or Calibrachoa. Both will tumble over the sides and soften the look of your planter. How about adding some scented leaf Pelargoniums to your pots to add another dimension to your planting scheme. There are a wonderful selection of scents to choose from. How about a zesty “Orange Fizz” or a fresh citrus scent of “Citronella”. The traditional rose scent of “Attar of Roses” is always popular. Then there is “Big Apple”,

“Creamy Nutmeg” and “Ardwick Cinnamon” for those foodies amongst you, although you cannot eat them they will make your taste buds water from their scents alone. Mix in your scented leaf Pelargoniums with some flowering summer bedding, planting the scented leaf round the edge of the pot, so when you brush past them they release their scents for you. Place these pots either side of your front door so as you come home after work each day & brush past them they welcome you home with their delicious aroma. Coloured leaf (variegated) plants can enhance your pots display. Coordinate the colour of the leaves with the colour of your flowering plants or chose contrasting colours to really lift your display. Here at Cramden Nursery we grow a selection of coloured leaf Pelargoniums. You’ll find “Frank Hedley” that has white and green leaves and single salmon flowers & “Mrs Pollock” showing off her tri-coloured leaves of red, green and yellow under single orange flowers. Not forgetting “Vancouver” with its lime green edged leaves that boasts bronze centres and single orange-red spiky flowers. last but by no means least we offer “Retahs Crystal” with her cream and green leaves and soft baby pink semi double flowers, match her up with pinks or purples and she looks stunning. The colour combinations between flowers and foliage are wonderfully endless. Have fun choosing your colour schemes this summer for your pots. If you have any questions or would like some advice on planting up your pots then drop into the nursery, we are here to help. Happy planting from Emily and the team at Cramden Nursery. 30

is based at Weston Favell Parish Hall, Booth Lane South, Northampton, NN3 3NS. It was started in 2011 by Catherine Byrne, a qualified fitness instructor and Sally Romain, a qualified social worker, who recognised that there was a growing need to provide a focal point for people to come together, keep fit and make new friends in their community. The sessions take place each Monday and Friday mornings between 10.00am and 12.00 noon and are two completely different classes. Monday’s class is exercise to music whereas the Friday class additionally involves standing Pilates and strengthening of core muscles. Catherine takes a 45 minute session of keep fit after which there is plenty of time to chat, have fun and make new friends over a cuppa. The sessions are tailored to ensure that specific health needs are catered for. Once a month we organise a group walk and there are other social outings such as theatre 35

Discovering

studying the giant Blue Morpho butterfly found that although the insects wings look smooth to the naked eye, the surfaces are covered with minute overlapping scales that resemble tiles on a roof. Even tinier parallel hairs on the surface of the scales cause dirt or drops of water to roll off with ease. Butterfly wings are actually made of two chitonous layers (membranes) that are nourished and supported by tubular veins. Across the world there are human engineers who have been trying to copy the texture of a butterflies wings in order to make high-tech coatings for industry and medical equipment. Replication of their resistance to dirt and water would be considered a major break through! The butterflies wing is another example of how science is trying to mimic the designs found in living things. Nature is full of engineering marvels from the micro to the macro scale and this is another example of how they have inspired mankind over centuries.

a true flight of fancy!

Did you know? A butterfly has four wings, two forewings and two hindwings which are attached to the second and third thoracic segments, also known as the meso- and meta-thorax. Strong muscles in the thorax move the wings up and down in a figureof-eight pattern during flight. When the fully-grown adult butterfly emerges from its pupa, its delicate wings are crinkled, wet, and uninflated. The butterfly hangs upside down and pumps blood into its wings to inflate them, then waits for the wings to dry before it can fly. The wings of a butterfly are extremely fragile and if they fray or are torn, do not repair themselves. Even the weight of specks of dust or drops of moisture can make flying difficult. Nevertheless the wings stay clean and dry. So what is the butterflies secret? Researchers

I discovered their range of mixed coloured pots of ‘Million Bells’ and Verbena. What bright, beautiful colours they were. Emily was keen to show me their range of ‘Pinks’, wow, what a delightful aroma they have. The brightly coloured Dahlias caught my eye with their showy single blooms and contrasting dark leaves. There was also a good stock of lovely large Lavenders on the benches, which the bees were busy enjoying. Before I left, I just had to pick up one of their lovely Heucheras, such a selection of varieties and leaf colours to choose from. The variety “Lime marmalade” gets my vote, with its viberant lime green ruffled leaves, it just shines. The friendly nursery staff are always on hand to help you, even if it is just a matter of colour co-ordination. All their plants are home grown and healthy. There is plenty of parking on the nursery. The Nursery is open 9-5pm Mon-Saturday, and also Sundays 10-4 pm. Cramden Nursery is well worth a visit for all gardeners. Go and see what you have been missing.

It’s not just all about Geraniums Cramden Nursery is a little gem of a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today the nursery is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. “It’s not just all about Geraniums” explains Emily, “here at Cramden Nursery we have an ever increasing range of plants that give summer colour”. She is not wrong, on my last visit to the nursery

Apparently, recent studies prove that exposure to sci-fi films and TV programmes have made older adults less sceptical of the ever increasing volume of robots being employed in todays world. Portrayals of robots like R2D2, RoboCop and my favourite, the T-800 (Terminator) in popular films have softened our attitudes towards adoption of these artificial workhorses. One such invention that would be an instant asset to our overstretched hospitals is currently zooming around the hallways of the new University of California, San Francisco hospital situated in Mission Bay. The Ethon TUG robot looks a bit like R2D2 and drags a platform around behind it. The hospital employs a team of 27 of them! Instead of drones, think of them more as little flatbed trucks, ferrying carts of stuff around the vast hospital complex - food, linens, medications, medical waste and garbage . . . . and they do it more efficiently than humans! At the helm of these mechanised marvels is Dan Henroid, who is also director of nutrition and food services for the UCSF Medical Centre. On average, each ‘Tug’ travels about 35 miles a day and over the past year, they have made more than 157,000 trips through the hospital. Although it was claimed that no one in the hospital had lost their job to a robot, the UCSF did admit that the Tugs allowed them to hire about 30 fewer workers over the year including extra staff usually needed for holiday cover. Mr. Henroid’s view came from a slightly different angle as he claimed that the robots were simply carting things from one point to another, which is something most humans would not find particularly rewarding. In years to come this will almost certainly become a norm in all of our hospitals. I for one would welcome it, but then I could never resist the Tugs cousin, R2D2 in the 1983 classic ‘Return of the Jedi’.

Do you need assistance with your housework?

Park Life The latest news from the Friends of Abington Park Any visitors to the park will have noticed how very busy it is these days. All areas from open grassland to the children’s play area to quiet seating are all popular as the weather improves. One issue which cannot have escaped the notice of those in the park is how very wet the ground is underfoot – in places even severely flooded. Given recent weather patterns some such conditions are to be expected. The Friends have long expressed concerns about the state of the land to the Council but were greeted with excuses such as new underground springs had erupted, a new drainage system was required and funds were not available etc. Friends have long felt that the flooding that was evident in some major areas was unnecessary. After much badgering and pleading, one member carried out an audit of the state of the drains and to the surprise of the authorities discovered that remedies could be put in place rapidly and cheaply. By the time you read this we hope that you will have noticed how very much improved the ground is around the old rose garden and play area. By working together with the Borough Council, Council leaders and Friends representing the power of the community, we can make improvements. We hope that when you visit the park over the coming summer months and during holiday periods that you will spare a thought for the Friends and their campaigning to keep the park looking good and, above all, safe, for all users. If you would like to support our work, why not join us – your membership is all we ask, and you can add your voice to those who use the park and strive to keep it looking at its best. Local Football Update by Andy Goldsmith

There was dancing in the street at Billing Road as ON Chenecks celebrated promotion to the top flight of UCL football for the first time in their history. Promotion was secured with a game to spare as Chenecks sealed second place in Division One with a comfortable 5-0 win over basement hosts Burton PW, in difficult conditions at Latimer Park. Top scorer Ben Lewington gave them a 25th minute lead and two quick-fire goals late in the half wrapped up the win. Adam Spalding scored on 41 minutes, with Lewington making it three a minute later. Lewington completed his hat trick after 58 minutes and was joined on the scoresheet by his brother, Joe two minutes from time when the Chenecks skipper netted from the penalty spot. On the final day a comfortable success at Rushden & Higham saw Chenecks sign off their time in Division One with a 3-0 victory. Sam Watkins gave Chenecks the lead seven minutes in, with Ben Lewington’s 24th goal of the season doubling the visiting advantage five minutes before the break. The scoring was completed by Simon Underwood nine minutes into the second half. Graham Cottle’s men finished the season in second place, 6 points ahead of third placed Stewarts & Lloyds Corby, but a massive 21 points behind run away champions, Peterborough Sports, who completed their campaign just one point shy of 100 points. There was also joy at Northampton Sileby Rangers, who secured a third season in the top flight after a strong run in, which saw the Fernie Fields club win five and draw one of their last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. Sileby, who finished in 19th place, 6 points clear of Wellingborough Town, and 12 clear of the bottom two sides, completed their campaign with a 3-2 home success over Peterborough Northern Star after a second half comeback. Brian Farrell’s 22nd goal of the season gave Rangers a great start but they were pegged back by a Jezz Goldson-Williams reply after 10 minutes and then Craig Smith put the visitors ahead 5 minutes before the break. A 65th minute

Action from Harborough v Spencer by Paul Kingston

Dominic Okanu goal levelled the scores and the home side turned one point into three with Ife Ogunbayo’s effort a quarter of an hour from time. On the other side of Town there was very sad news as one of the town’s most established clubs Northampton Spencer signed off 80 years of history with a final day 4-0 defeat at much improved Harborough Town. This wasn’t the way Spencer wanted 38 years of UCL football to end, but they were swept aside by the Bees in their successful pursuit of a top half finish. Alex McMillan gave Harborough the lead after 22 minutes. Barnes Gladman and a Jordan Crawford brace completed the scoring. The Millers’ final home match in UCL football, was the local derby with Sileby Rangers. Sileby’s need to preserve their top flight status gave them added incentive and a 73rd minute goal from Ife Ogunbayo sealed a vital victory in their battle to beat the drop. In the first period Spencer’s Matt Long shot over after Corey McGovern spilled an Alex Lowery header and Sean McBride was inches wide with a volley. Sileby missed a chance to double their lead late on when Brian Farrell was brought down by Liam Tuck, but Farrell’s spot kick was saved by Aaron Lee in the home goal. Despite the disappointment of the clubs’ demise, manager, Ben Stone can be proud of his excellent work that helped secure a mid-table finish in the Premier Division. With several key committee men relinquishing their roles after over 30 years service, the club was left in a precarious position. Various pleas for assistance fell on death ears resulting in the club having no alternative than to lock its gates for the final time. Northampton Spencer Football Club is another shining example of individuals not wanting to give up their spare time for grass roots football. 49

Ceri, one of our volunteers, said she volunteered for a variety of reasons: ‘There are lots of reasons. I first became a volunteer because I desperately wanted a dog. At the time I was commuting daily so dog ownership was out of the question. I started by walking a high energy terrier at weekends. It gave me the doggy company I wanted without any of the guilt or ties that go with dog ownership. However, through my volunteer work I’ve also realised I get other benefits. I’ve met some wonderful people and made some great friends. Gym membership is no longer needed and the feelgood factor after a long walk with a fantastic dog is second to none.’ There is no minimum or maximum age! (Under 16yrs would need an adult to walk with them) In fact the Trust encourage younger volunteers and are an Approved Activity Provider (AAP) for the D of E. If you’d like more information or just a chat about the Trusts work email: appeals@cinnamon.org.uk Tel: 01736 758707 or have a look at their website: www.cinnamon.org.uk/volunteers

Introducing the

Cinnamon Trust The Cinnamon Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. A national network of over 15,000 community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day pet care poses a problem for the owner. For example, walking the dog for a housebound owner or short term fostering when an owner goes into hospital. The Trust is the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems and sometimes injustices faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets.

Seventy to eighty of us met for a Bring and Share Tea Party appropriately dressed in red white and blue. The Church Hall was decorated with flags, bunting and memorabilia to make a colourful and patriotic display. Homemade entertainment with some surprising home grown talent made for a happy afternoon. We closed by raising our glasses for the Loyal Toast and singing the National Anthem. The next day one of our members took sandwiches and cakes into Abington Street to give to homeless people and on the Tuesday two more members took cakes to Doddridge Church on Castle Hill where over fifty people are fed every Tuesday evening. It was a nonprofit event so surplus money was given to EVE, a local charity for survivors of domestic abuse and violence and the local food bank. Our current membership is 181 households each of whom have paid a ÂŁ10 joining fee. We have monthly coffee mornings, occasional drinks evenings and brunches, all held at the Bold Dragoon, Weston Favell. We are linked

to other local organisations: the school and church, the tennis club and allotments, where we have a community allotment, Friends of Abington Park, the Gardening Society and Bridgewater Residents’ Association. We have a Community Noticeboard and good links with our community policeman and we are well supported by our local Councillors Stephen 30th Northampton Legg and Mary Markham. We are collecting and collating the history of the village over the last 100 years. We hope to publish a small booklet. If you live/ do live/ or know anything about our local history please contact Angie Bason (400007).
