As we go to print John Coghlan is touring for the first time since 1981 as part the original frantic four with Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt and Alan Lancaster. Fulfilling a number of large sell out shows due to public demand across Europe and the UK. We at Events On are therefore very excited that John has agreed to headline at our first festival promotion, the forty500, at Duston Mill in Northampton on Saturday June 28th with his own band John Coghlan’s Quo. Since leaving Quo, John has worked with many noted and diverse musicians, mostly in his own Diesel Band. Other appearances include Partners In Crime and the shortlived ‘Rockers’ featuring Phil Lynott, Roy Wood and Chas Hodges. Additional collaborations have included Noel Redding (ex-Jimi Hendrix) and Eric Bell (ex-Thin Lizzy).
“I got a call from Pete Barton who sings with The Animals, but is also a booking agent. He said you had loads of hit records; why not put a band together? I now have these guys from Predatür. Great players and they recreate the sound without this lookalike rubbish. I don’t want to discuss tribute bands because it is not our bag. Baz, Mick and Pete – we get on great and we have a good following for John Coghlan’s Quo. I still play the way I played with Quo, I haven’t changed anything. We even play down my little local Pub; we take all the furniture out! We did it once for fun and now we have done it twice a year for twenty-six years. We still attack the songs the same as at big gigs and Quo fans love it because that’s the way it should be played.” Aside from the expected Quo standards the Set List will often include songs that have either not been performed by Quo for many During the late nineties John years or even on occasion, not at all. Coghlan’s Quo was formed and through various line-ups has enjoyed If you enjoy a combination of long-lost classic album tracks with a regular gigs all over the UK and Europe. The current band since 2010 mixture of Quo’s Greatest Hits and (previously performing as The John delivered with a 70’s vibe, then a Coghlan Band) consists of John on John Coghlan’s Quo gig is simply a must. Drums with Baz Barry, Mick Hughes and Pete Knight from NWOBHM Boogie Band ‘Predatür’ completing the line-up. It should be clear this is most definitely not a “tribute” act, the prime aim being to recreate an authentic “70’s Quo Sound” in keeping with John’s time with Quo. John explains, “Since leaving in 1981 I’ve played with loads of guitarists and they’d say let’s stick a couple of Quo songs in and they would come unstuck. They think it is so easy and they just bluff their way through and really do a poor version.”

Based in Cambridgshire , Soulweaver are one of the tightest, hardest working and entertaining live bands around. With dynamics, quality and intensity, Soulweaver contain the essence of classic British rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and Cream but with a contemporary edge that could see them described as the British Foo Fighters. “Very Impressive, Cracking Band” TotalRock Radio. "Their Shows Are Full Of Energy And Great Songs" The Classic Rock Society. "They Are An Awesome Live Band... There's So Much Energy Coming Off The Stage You Just Cant Help To Be Drawn In" ARfm Soundscapes. "An interesting Record... They've got a certain something" Dave Ling (of Classic Rock Magazine, Metal Hammer and UK rock media legend). "Soulweaver Are Addictive" ThisIsNotAScene.com Are just some of the plaudits heaped upon the band.
Receiving regular play on US, UK, European and Internet Radio and having already played many great festivals such as Cambridge Rock Festival, Bands On The Beacon, Headlined Peterborough Beer Festival, Bikerfest, Herofest, Sunfest and previously supporting Wishbone Ash, Soulweaver bring there energy to the stage at around 5pm on the day. With at least one more band to be announced, local bands Ma Browns Groove Box and Dead Frequency complete the line up so far. We will preview the rest next month

Jem Brittin: Soul’in Around. Music Through The Airwaves! The Glenn Bellamy Story. Many people both locally and nationally will know of renowned record collector/ dealer and dj Glenn. He turns 65 later this year! So thought it was high time we took a closer look at this endearing and knowledgeable “Sage of Soul”. His history on the Soul scene stretches way back to it’s inception during the mid sixties and his interest in music in general stretches almost back to the cradle more than half a century ago.
Hilverson’ I think this stemmed from dads interest and knowledge of music and guess this station was playing their style of music. I think it was broadcast from Europe. The first song I remember liking was by Marvin & Johnny called ‘Cherry Pie’ which was an early RnB track and of course there was Rock n Roll and Doo Wop etc. happening as well, which all fascinated me”. As soon as he could save up enough pocket money teenager Glenn started to buy records and attend a few do’s in his hometown of Kettering. One of these was at the Corn Market Hall promoted as ‘The Young Ones’ (a tribute to the then popular hit by Cliff Richard) and ran by local man Alan Dobson “Al was kind enough to give me a break an offer me my first ever dj spot there, as by now I had a nice little record collection, this was in 1963 and I continued to dj there with Alan for a while after regularly”
Glenn recalls that dance crazes were very popular around this time “The Glenn was born in 1949, his father Percy Twist had just about been and gone but now 90years old was a Navy forces radio they were doing things like the Shake” dj during World War 2 playing all the with British Pop Groups like the then popular tunes, and operating from Beatles, Stones and others establishing all over the world aboard the ships he themselves around this time, was stationed on. Glenn recounted performing music, much of which had “Dad would arrive at various ports its roots based in American RnB, it around the world to be handed loads of must have been exciting times around new 78s record releases to play”, you then. could say he was almost the forerunner to the pirate radio djs of the sixties, but Glenn’s next djing venture was with his cousin Mick Hanzlick at The Cathedral he was doing it legally of course. Youth Club in Northampton this was Percy is also very musical and back then around 1965 “We did every Saturday performed vocals with a popular ‘swing’ night there for a good few years” Glenn band outfit known as ‘The Hawaiian had been scouring second hand shops Serenaders’ and was a big fan of swing and record outlets in search of dance bands in general, including of course tracks to play, by now the U.K. Mod the great Glenn Miller who he did get to scene had started to establish itself and meet up with eventually. So it’s no American Soul records were starting to mistake that Glenn was named after his reach these shores from the likes of dad’s musical hero. Stax, Atlantic and Tamla Motown labels, along with Ska and Bluebeat Glenn, in his own words grew up in a finding it’s way here with the West home full of music, back in the 50s the Indian immigrants. Glenn also radio and records, in most homes was commented that he was tuning into the central source of entertainment. American Forces Radio on the MW Glenn recalled “my first memories of music were from the radio, in particular channel around this time hearing some amazing stuff that inspired him. Mum & Dad would tune in regularly to a station I now know was called ‘Radio

Things were changing with an underground scene starting to emerge and Glenn was being drawn to this more and more. 1969 found Glenn at the White Hart Inn Northampton djing with his cousin Mick “We had some great nights there” explained Glenn, but by now he had started to travel the country to record dealers and fairs etc. seeking out the more underground Soul & RnB tracks that interested him and was looking for somewhere to play them out , later in 1969 an All- Nighter was Started up by John Dobson (Brother of Alan) at the Red House pub on the A43 between Kettering and Northampton, Glenn was invited along to dj. He recalled “this was held in a big building at the rear of the pub the owner laid out a floor covering and put some heaters in there. It was a bit basic but the music was great”

overlooked around here as the records they were playing in these clubs we had been playing locally for a good few years and now they were being labelled as Northern Soul” However Northern Soul was here to stay and at least guys like Glenn could be proud of laying the bedrock for this to happen and in fairness the continuation of the Northern Scene and its interest led to even more great discoveries, by 1974 Glenn found himself djing regularly at one of the first Northern Soul Original Soul in the Bowl Nights at All-Nighters in the country St. Ives Rushden you can see him in action (Cambs.) there on Sat. 12TH April. You will also find him at the regular Record Fair he Throughout the 70s Glenn was a runs every month at the Parish Hall, regular Northern Soul dj at many Market Place Kettering NN16 where venues including the Central Hall you will find records, cds, dvds, tapes All-Dayers at Kettering and further a and memorabilia covering all era’s and field at such places KGB Sheffield and genres of music from the 1950s to toTiffanies Derby at the same time his day, many stalls and traders are there record business was growing to from 9am to 3pm on a Saturday. include regular sales lists and stalls at The following year Brian Tompkins markets and record bars at Northern Glenn commented these fairs have started up the Bletsoe All-Nighters Soul venues. He was still turning up become very busy with the current near Bedford, again this was a pretty some unheard records and still resurgent interest in retro music, which basic affair in fact it was held in a supplying other dealers and djs. is good to see with so much business cowshed “that’s how it was back then” During the late 70s Glenn and Wife Pia taking place on the internet it’s almost explained Glenn “however it didn’t opened their first record shop in a novelty now to get your hands on the deter people, we had some fantastic Kettering ‘Glenn’s Records’ by the real thing before you buy it. Glenn’s nights there”, by now Glenn had early 80s they moved to larger premises Record Fairs future dates are April unearthed some rare and sought after in King Street an renamed it ‘Out of 12th, May 17th, June 14th, July 5th, records and was making a name for the Past Records’ the name they still Aug. 30th, Sept. 20th,Oct. 25th, himself on the scene. He was also trade under today, although the shop is Nov.22nd and Dec. 27th Glenn can be supplying other djs with some no longer running. contacted on 01536 520547 for more previously unheard records and info. Glenn took a bit of time out during the breaking new sounds himself. So it seems Glenn has no plans to 80s to concentrate on bringing up his retire yet, those airwaves certainly Following stints at clubs such family while running his record carried you the gift of music, maybe it “Shades” Northampton and The business and kept his djing mainly was the same ones that carried your Football Club (Dog & Duck) locally, but returned in the 90s to co Dads music to the people all those Wellingborough, bring things up to the promote the very successful K.L.V. years ago, good luck to you mate. early 70s by this time Glenn had Soul Nights in Kettering and in the 00s Keep on keeping on! amassed a large collection of records and today is still running his record Back to more reviews and news next purchased from many sources business attending fairs all over the month including bulk import buys “I set out country plus djing at various Nights in As always anything Soulful to report initially just to grow my own and around the county, his main dj email me js.briton@ntlworl.com collection” Glenn recounts, however as spot at present is a resident at The See you somewhere soulful soon .Jem he describes “I was almost forced into the record sales side of things, as it was impractical to hang on to everything” by now Glenn had nearly every record that was popular on the scene in his collection whilst still coming up with some unknown gems, as a result he was very much in demand to dj. Around 1973 the term ‘Northern Soul’ was being banded about, with rumours of a scene happening up North. The term ‘Northern Soul’ was coined by author and producer Dave Godin and the rest is history I suppose. However as Glenn recalled “we almost felt a bit

The Kings Arms is a new food establishment in Northamptonshire and is well known for having the high standards of food and presentation all at an affordable price. Our customers know that when they eat at our public house they are guaranteed value for money, a friendly service and the best pub food served in the bar and our delicious restaurant menu served in our newly refurbished restaurant upstairs. We are a family friendly restaurant, we do not have a specialized children's menu as we feel that they should be able to sample something as good as what you are eating, of course we offer half portions for half price and can simplify dishes to ensure they are suitable. Parking: If you are arriving by car don't forget you can park in the towns car park just off Chancery

The restaurant offers traditional and modern dishes, our best seller, 4 hour slow cooked pork belly served with black pudding mashed potato and crackling is an excellent dish and enjoyed by many. The menu changes with the seasons, and the specials board accompanies the menu with alternative dishes which change regularly, the specials try to offer something a bit different to the current menu with dishes such as moules mariniee recently being on offer and proving very popular. Every Wednesday is now Italian night with a delicious selection of starter and main course for only ÂŁ10.95. Bookings for events such as anniversaries and birthday celebrations are now being taken. A variety of food options can be offered including set menus, choice menus or buffets.

Raunds Has A Future Snooker Ace Cuing Up For The Top. Hello my name is Harvey Chandler and I am 18 years old. My dream and ambition has always been to be a professional snooker player. I first played snooker when my Dad took me to the local club when I was 12. The local coach saw that I was keen and I started having lessons. I improved rapidly and I had a century break when I was 13 years old. I had my first maximum break when I was just 17 years old. I have won many junior and amateur events throughout the UK. I won the European Under 18 Championships in 2011 and at the same event I made a break of 130 in the main arena. I am in the media regularly for my snooker and I have been in the paper and on BBC Radio several times. My plan now is to take the next step and turn professional. At the moment I practice at the Rushden Windmill Snooker Club. I practice 6 hours a day and I play against fellow professionals such as former World champion Peter Ebdon. There are 2 main routes to turn professional. One of them is through Q School. This runs in April and there are 3 tournaments in which the
final 4 players from each tournament get a Main Tour Ticket. As a result there are 12 spots available. This would probably be my best chance but the entry fee is £1000 and that is where I need some financial support. The second route is by entering PTC's. These are events run throughout the year and the top 8 amateurs from these will get a Main Tour Ticket. Professionals play in these so the prize money is greater although there is more travelling involved as the events are held in countries such as Poland, Germany, Holland, India and China. On the positive side the events are televised and I would have my chance to play on television and get more media coverage for myself and my sponsor. I think that I have a great chance to turn professional and I have a Professional Coach who also thinks the same. It would be a shame if my dreams could not be fulfilled through lack of financial support rather than skill or ability. I am currently working hard on my game with my coach, Gavin York. He has coached hundreds of players and thinks that I have a good chance to succeed. What I am asking for is some financial support to pay for my tournament entry fees, travelling, accommodation and coaching costs. This would enable me to concentrate solely on my snooker and play to the best of my ability. In return I would wear your logo on my waistcoat and mention your company at every opportunity when I am in the media. I would also be very grateful. I hope to hear from you soon. I hope you can help me; I look forward to hearing back from you. Telephone Mel at Events On 07851 051302 if you or your company would be interested in sponsoring Harvey and helping this young man develop his talent.
