Thems The Brakes Hit The Deps Of Delight. A month of incredible gigs has left the members of THEMS THE BRAKES extremely tired - no rest for the wicked as they say, but "thems the brakes" for being a kick ass band! Kicking off June was a great night down at The Wheatsheaf in Rushden! Unfortunately on this gig Kelly Barnes (Vocals) and Sean Anderson (Bass) were unavailable so TTB called on the services of the amazing Kirsty Crawford to fill in for Kelly, and the fantastic Dave Spencer to fill in for Sean on Bass. Although a fairly quiet night, it was still a success with people leaving the pub in high spirits, and the members of TTB shattered but incredibly happy. The days soon flew by and TTB were gigging again performing at The Railway in Rushden. TTB were the first ever band to play at this venue and were incredibly honoured to be given the opportunity to claim this title. In the evening, the amps, drums and PA were all set up again at Finedon Dolben C.C. for a young ladies 30th birthday party. Once again Sean Anderson was unavailable so TTB rang their old friend, and former drummer Daniel
Church to fill in on bass. A great night, with beer a plenty and the dance floor booming all night long. Once again the days just flew by, and TTB were travelling to The Phoenix in Corby! An extremely enjoyable night - the Corby locals really showing TTB how they do it, with some great dancing and quality banter all night long. With a rare weekend off, TTB will be relaxing and chilling out preparing for July, with two gigs on the first weekend to kick off the month - Saturday 6th July, Joes Bar (Higham Ferrers) and Sunday 7th July, Rushden Cons Club Beer festival. BRING IT ON!
For booking please feel free to contact Dave Earl on 075812032806, or e-mail the band at themsthebrakes official@hotmail.co.uk. Visit us at www.facebook.com/ themsthebrakesofficial.

FYSH2FRY’s production of Assassins at The Place, Bedford – May 2013 Reviewed by Neil Richardson. "Angry men don't write the rules and guns don't right the wrongs. Hurts a while but soon the country's back where it belongs." With recent American gun crimes and events closer to home hitting the headlines in South London, those are lyrics that could've been written yesterday. They were written in fact more than 20 years ago by Stephen Sondheim, as part of his 1990 musical Assassins a fresh, feisty piece of musical theatre given a pristine production by Fysh2Fry (following excellent productions of Rent & Spring Awakening) in their swan-song show cleverly directed by long-time local master Sondheim director Peter Darnell.
reminded, a country where some have much and many have little, but also one where the mailman can win the lottery. And it's a nation which frequently tries to kill its leader. Only a Musical lyricist with Sondheim's wit (he's responsible for music and lyrics, with a very clever book by John Weidman) could make this funny. But it is uproariously, absurdly, and bleakly comical in parts. Take, for example, these lyrics from the show opener, "Everybody's Got the Right": "Hey pal, feeling blue? Don't know, what to do? Hey pal, I mean you. Come here and kill a president."
Alex Levenes' Garfield assassin, Charles Guiteau, was hilariously egotistical and swanky. Annette Codrington gave Sara Jane Moore, one of two women who attempted to kill Gerald Ford, an endearingly quirky quality with spot-on comic touches, as did Elly Taylor playing Lynette “Squeaky” Frome, the other failed hit-woman. Elly together with Martin Grover (John Hinkley) gave a great rendition of “I am unworthy of your love”, declaring their respective devotion to murderer Charles Manson and Taxi star Jodie Foster. In an Assassins is a curious musical. attempt to gain favour with the Blending a range of American American actress, Hinkley shot but musical styles, from Dixieland to failed to kill Ronald Reagan in 1980. bluegrass, it focuses on nine men Colin Woolmer earned rounds of and women who tried to kill (or applause for his dark yet funny succeeded in killing) an American monologues (as well as his president, from John Wilkes Booth, attempts to hit the MD each night the frustrated actor who killed by throwing his cheeseburger out of Lincoln, to JFK assassin Lee his car) playing Sam Byck, the Harvey Oswald. would be Assassin who planned to kill Nixon by flying a plane into the Along the way, Assassins probes White House. Jon Reynolds deeply into the nature of the reprising his role as John Wilkes American dream - this is, we're Booth stamped his authority as the
father of all the Assassins, the one who started the Presidential killing spree, holding the piece together, re -appearing to guide the others towards their destiny. Lester Cooke (Leon Czolgosz), Leigh Smith (Giuseppe Zangara), Leisa Cooke (Proprietor) and Seb Goss (an impressively anguished Lee Harvey Oswald) all gave excellent performances in the principal line up, not forgetting Simon Jackson who as the Balladeer told the story and linked the history together displaying a fine voice whilst doing so. It takes talented performers to unlock the comedy in material this dark, and director Peter Darnell's 13 member cast admirably rose to the challenge. With a great band (under the musical direction of Rob Brand), they mined the opportunities Sondheim and Weidman gave to make surprisingly sympathetic characters out of all the killers and would be assassins a quality ensemble piece. By the time it reached its touching conclusion Assassins had made us laugh, it moved us, and provoked us with questions about our society and who we truly wanted to be. With productions like this it seems a great shame that Fysh have decided to put the closed sign up in the Fryer. Theatregoers in Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas will certainly miss the high standard of their productions but quality shows and brave producers like Roy & Lucy Taylor who were willing to stage lesser performed musicals as a refreshing change from the guaranteed box office fodder so often repeated by local societies, are few and far between. I’m sure the batter will be heated up again in the not too distant future and Fysh will Fry again I certainly hope so.

The Courtyard Stanwick: A Shining Star Of Quality And Service. Northamptonshire, has been home to Alec and Jo Bates, since 1998. After some sizeable improvements to the property, they decided to open up their beautiful home and garden to guests five years ago. We are in such a picturesque easily accessible location, we wanted to share our beautiful home with others.
To quote a recent customer “there is no way you are only 3* So I have decided to stop paying for AA accreditations and let my customers review me on line. This I think is the modern way.

The Gurkhas And Orchid Restaurant Is A Flower For Desborough. The Gurkhas and Orchid Restaurant is situated just off of the A6 bypass on Harborough Road, B576 Desborough, next to the Travel Plaza Hotel. We took a ride out one pleasant sunny Friday evening in June, remember the one? to sample the restaurants selection of Indian and Nepalese cuisine. The restaurants website promised Indian food with a Nepalese twist and a menu created by their head chef suitable for all tastes and budgets, whilst showcasing high quality Indian cuisine.
choosing both starter and main courses even more difficult. As the drinks arrived we advised Paul to give us at least another five minutes. I had done my usual trick of choosing a starter and then taking so long to choose a main course, by the time it came to ordering I had ask Sherree what I wanted for my starter as I had forgotten! In the end Sherree went for the starter of Trio Of Chicken Tikka that consisted of Tandoori Tikka, Noori Malai and green Chicken Tikka. When it arrived the colours on the plate where a sight to behold but the taste and texture of each piece was so tender and succulent, the chicken literally melted in your mouth and the flavours were superb.
I do love lamb cooked any way it comes, so I chose Khas Seekh Kebab. For my main course I stuck to my decision to try something completely new to me. I can honestly say I have never in my life had a seafood curry dish of any sort, Chinese king prawn starters the closest call. So I went for Malabar Chemmen Curry, prawn curry with green mango, coconut milk, kakum (a type of tamarind) ginger and curry leaves. I have to say I’m glad I did, the delicious prawns were enhanced by the superb blend described above with enough heat in the curry to enhance the experience. Both of us went for pilau rice and shared a peshwari naan which was cooked to perfection. We decided a sweet would be an over indulgence given the nice full feeling we already had. The bill for the food came to just £33.70, which we felt was incredible value for money. The Gurkhas and Orchid also do a takeaway collection service with a 10% discount , so if you are in the Rothwell/Desborough area and you have not tried them yet we recommend you do. If you are not averse to a little journey then hop over to Desborough and sample this hidden gem.
Bookings are advisable so telephone 01536 764518 or 764789. The restaurant is also available for private hire for all special occasions with no room hire charge.

Dreams Can Come True. The NC TLC Trust support families of children with childhood Cancers and Leukemia in so many ways – including making dreams come true even those by royal appointment! Ollie’s family from Leicester approached the charity in Earls Barton two years ago after Ollie, 5; he had been relapsing with leukemia. Unfortunately after all the chemotherapy treatment earlier this year his parents received the devastating news that it had spread to the central nervous system and his prognosis was that it was terminal and he was given only weeks to live. But life for Ollie is continuing despite this prognosis and he has, like many boys of his age, hopes and dreams and Andi Daw from the charity, who has been supporting the family started to work on making one of those dreams become a reality. Andi explained: “Ollie's biggest wish was tea with The Queen, after huge pleas on Facebook a vintage tea party was kindly donated by the Ladies of Barton but still no queen impersonator. “But with the help of Karen Rogers,
Stage Door, where Helen Mirren plays the queen at present in the production of ' The Audience' and after a cheeky phone call Helen Mirren agreed to meet Ollie and help make his wish come true.” The family on the day were treated like royalty too with a Limo provided by JP Limousines in Earls Barton to take them to watch Helen’s performance and a local florist Lee Berril provided the flowers for Ollie to present to his Queen for the day, Helen Mirren. Ollie had teacakes and a glass of Coke with his Queen for the day and after meeting with her Corgis he was knighted Sir Ollie! Andi added : “All his other final wishes had to be cancelled due to his prognosis this one lifted not just him but his whole family and has given this amazing lad 5 minutes in the limelight hitting national and international papers.” “He deserves this so very much he has been brave and courageous for many years now with his family beside him and fully deserves the recognition he has had, everyone at NCTLC is over the moon to of made his wish come true and to hear and see him so happy at such a difficult and painful time. She added: “The day Ollie gains his angel wings will be a sad day but knowing his greatest wish was achieved by us will hopefully comfort all those involved with Ollie especially his family.” At the charity we ask for people touched by Ollie’s story to help us to grant similar wishes for other children, and ask you to visit our website at www.nctlctrust.com to see what events we have coming up and if you visit www.goldengiving.com to purchase tickets for these events or support other challenges people are undertaking to help keep the work and support of the charity on-going.
