Dear Neighbours,

I

t’s time to make yourself comfortable, sit back and enjoy the abundance of sporting fixtures scheduled throughout the summer. Whether you’re a football lover, Formula 1 fan, rugby supporter, cricket devotee, golf follower, tennis enthusiast, boxing fanatic or prefer the variety on offer at the Olympics - there’s certainly something for everyone during the summer of 2016. If you’re a lover of all sports...well, you’ve got a very busy few months ahead of you! So, stock up the fridge, fire up the BBQ, invite friends and family and make an occasion of it...I’ll use any excuse for a good get together! On the subject of sport, Northamptonshire Sport are hosting “A Question Of Sport” charity quiz night on Thursday 9th June, at Franklin’s Gardens Members Bar; raising funds for NFDS (Northamptonshire Federation of Disability Sport). Further information on how to enter a team on page 14. If music is more your thing, Northampton Music Festival is back for its 9th year. The festival is a free annual event, designed to raise the profile of Northampton Town and its rich music culture; page 14 for further information. With longer days and (fingers crossed) warmer weather, it’s time to head out into the garden...but if your private sanctuary is in need of some ‘TLC’, we can help! Pippa Greenwood has gardening tips on tackling troublesome weeds on page 34 and Katherine Sorrell has garden design advice for perfect outdoor living, page 26. Also this issue, we have a classic summer pudding recipe on page 30 and our tech spec this month is on smart home technology, page 40. 14th June is World Blood Donor Day; Alison Runham looks at the importance of giving blood and the step by step process of being a donor, page 10. Another important date is the imminent EU vote; Ann Haldon reviews the implications on personal finances as well as providing some of the expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months, page 18. Finally, we’ve got a family ticket to give away to see Gangsta Granny, courtesy of Royal & Derngate Theatre, competition details on page 50. Until next month...

WHY SHOULD YOU GIVE BLOOD? Have you ever considered giving blood? It’s easy to find reasons not to, but it’s also easy to assume that blood will be instantly available if we need a blood transfusion. However, in the UK alone we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs.

World Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual event supported by the World Health Organisation. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors and highlights the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise public awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors and persuading health ministers worldwide to strive for their countries to become selfsufficient in safe, voluntarily donated blood and blood products.

It’s not just victims of accidents and trauma that need blood transfusions. Your blood could also save the lives of patients undergoing surgery or cancer treatments, new mothers suffering haemorrhage during or after childbirth and people with blood disorders or sickle cell disease. In 2014, 67% of donated blood in the UK was used to treat medical conditions including anaemia, cancer and blood disorders, 27% was used in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% was used to treat blood loss after childbirth.

WHO CAN GIVE BLOOD? If you’re fit, healthy, aged 16 to 66 and weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood. Existing donors can carry on donating blood beyond 66. Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months. However, there are things that can affect your eligibility to give blood, such as hazardous occupations, receiving a transplant, travel to certain countries in the last year, some cosmetic procedures and existing medical conditions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www.blood.co.uk/who-can-giveblood. Also, women under 20 who weigh under 10st 3lb (65kg) or are under 5’ 6” (168cm) tall will need to have their blood volume estimated before they can give blood, as a low blood volume may cause fainting during donation.

REGISTERING TO BE A BLOOD DONOR You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by phone by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation venue during a session. You can book an appointment in advance or take a walk-in slot at one of the 23,000 blood donation sessions held at more than 3,000 venues each year. 24 of these venues are permanent blood donor centres in major towns and cities, while the others are temporary local venues such as village halls. PREPARING TO GIVE BLOOD To keep yourself as healthy and comfortable as possible when you donate blood, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regular meals. • Get a good night’s sleep. • Drink plenty of fluids (but avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid exercise that’s more strenuous than your usual activities. • Know your medical and travel history. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DONATE BLOOD If you’re nervous, take along a friend or a distraction such as a book or MP3 player. Prebooked appointments shouldn’t take more than an hour. Prior to your donation, you’ll be given a welcome leaflet and a drink just before you give blood, to help you stay hydrated. Your identity and the information on your donor health check form will be confirmed and your iron levels will be checked by testing a drop of blood from your finger. A registered nurse will be on hand to discuss any concerns. In the donation chair, a small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure. The donation site will be cleaned with antiseptic before the needle, which is connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted. A special agitator scale constantly measures your donated blood and will stop your donation automatically once the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any discomfort or pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm.

12

AFTER YOUR DONATION You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave. Once you’re home, you should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most people feel fine afterwards, but if you feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, drink plenty of fluid and lie down until you feel better. If bleeding recurs, sit down, raise your arm and press on the area until it stops. If you become unwell (other than a cold or cold sore) within 2 weeks, or believe there’s a reason your blood shouldn’t be used, you should call 0300 123 2323. BECOME A LIFESAVER Think of saving a life and you probably imagine rescuing someone from an accident or a fire. But by becoming a blood donor, you could save a life every time you donate. So why not register today?

Save the date: Delapré Abbey set to open on Saturday 11th February 2017 Northampton is set to welcome the UK’s newest heritage visitor attraction, with Delapré Abbey opening its doors to the public for the first time in 900 years on Saturday 11th February 2017. Phasing the opening means that this revised date allows us to complete all the detailed restoration work and create a unique visitor experience that shares the Abbey’s history in all its glory. Filled with memory-making activities for everyone to enjoy, the regenerated Abbey will include a series of interactive zones and experiences detailing its story over the 900 years, providing a very different feel to a standard country house visit, as well as a learning hub, conservatory restaurant and plenty of parkland to enjoy. Taking place as part of the restoration and development of the building, the work has been funded by both the Heritage Lottery Fund and Northampton Borough Council. In addition to being the newest regional family visitor attraction, the Abbey will be open for weddings, conferences and networking events, providing a setting that is rich in history and fascinating architecture. Ahead of the official February opening, Delapré Abbey’s catering services will be open from November 2016, offering refreshments for park visitors, as well as afternoon tea and a full menu of 14 lunch and dinner dishes.

With so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal finances, whether we stay or go. The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model financial predictions for leaving the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe and won’t be forced into adopting the euro at any future point. Many top business people and political figures are campaigning strongly to leave and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence - negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had. SO WHAT ISSUES SHOULD WE BE THINKING ABOUT? To provide a clearer picture of the issues involved when thinking about the pound in your pocket, we’ve covered a few of the areas that would experience the biggest impact should we exit, as well as

18

providing some of the expert opinions aired in the media over the last few months on: • The value of the pound. • The state of the property market. • Fuel prices. • Flight and travel costs. • Data roaming charges. A MAJORITY VOTE TO LEAVE THE EU The value of sterling At the start of 2016, sterling fell to its lowest level for 10 years against the dollar, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding our membership of the European Union. In general, a weaker sterling brings higher inflation and reduced purchasing power for consumers, but low value might only be an issue during the transition period rather than in the long-term. Ratings agency, Moody’s, have also suggested the UK’s strong credit rating could be put at risk if we leave the EU, but as we mentioned earlier, opinions aren’t based on hard evidence as there’s no data on which to model an outcome. Others have suggested that being independent of Europe would allow us to forge our own way without impedance, taking more control over how sterling fares in the markets. In fact, former CBI leader, John Longworth, recently expressed his personal view that the UK’s future would be “brighter” if we left Europe.

The property market Earlier this year, online estate agents eMoov surveyed 1,000 homeowners about the impact of an exit on property prices. 55% of people thought an exit would affect the price of their property with 34% of this number suggesting that it could increase the value of their home.¹ eMoov say that, rather than an exit from Europe directly affecting the UK property market, the accompanying general economic uncertainty might dissuade would-be purchasers from making such a huge financial decision, which could then reduce overall demand. Fuel prices The Automobile Association claims that petrol prices would rise by nearly 19p per litre soon after an exit vote.² Their calculation was based on a report by Goldman Sachs, which estimated a 20% fall in the value of the pound, and a tripling of oil prices. If this sounds like a huge increase you might be right; however, the RAC suggests that even if sterling did fall in value, fuel prices would not be dramatically affected by the drop. Cost of travel Dame Carolyn McCall, CEO of easyJet, has warned that the cost of travel would rise steeply if we exit the EU, and it would

mean the end of cheap flights. Others suggest a less severe impact for holidaymakers, saying that a fall in local prices within many countries would compensate for the drop in sterling value.

existence of sterling now and in the future. Financial regulation by Europe is expected to continue, however, and this is one of the major issues for those wanting to exit.

Again, even if a drop in the value of the pound does occur, there’s no reason to believe that it would be a long-term problem.

Author and property expert, Kate Faulkner, believes that growth of the property market would continue if we were to stay in Europe, but this would be at a reasonable level rather than a return of the unsustainable price rises that we’ve seen in the past.

Data roaming charges The cost of using mobile phones and other devices abroad could increase significantly if we leave the EU. This is because the arrangement to reduce extortionate data roaming fees once charged by UK providers may no longer be valid if we are not part of the European Union. It is thought unlikely that a similar agreement could be reached by an independent UK. VOTING TO STAY At the EU summit in February, David Cameron secured ‘special status’ for the UK in Europe. This includes exemption from the ‘ever closer union’ which would involve greater political integration of member states - one of the original intentions of the EU’s founders. The Prime Minister also attained specific recognition that the euro was not the sole currency within the Union, protecting the

including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids would be the ideal spot for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best set closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or perhaps even an outdoor kitchen.

The days of formal, look-butdon’t-touch gardens, with manicured lawns and ranks of ordered flowers in borders are – most would say thankfully – long gone. Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; in other words, they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. It sounds wonderful, but if your

26

garden is in need of an update, just how do you go about achieving this magical blend of practical and pretty? The secret, of course, is in the planning. Look at the bigger picture first. How will you use the space and what do you want from it? To begin with, sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, whose training and experience means they will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of yourself. In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end,

Consider changes in levels – they add interest to a garden and are easier to deal with than slopes – but if you are carrying a tray out from the house, it’s best to avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too, dramatically affecting both how your garden looks and also how it feels underfoot. Will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement the flooring in your kitchen for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, where different types of flooring can differentiate, say, a kitchen from a dining room, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify a few stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places

for climbers to grow. Think about fences (dull ones can be changed fairly easily, or painted a bright colour for va va voom), hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path, for example, entwined with fragrant honeysuckle, would make a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can provide a link between two different areas of the garden as well as offering a shaded spot in which to sit. Finally, furniture. Take the indoors outside with waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. Meanwhile, if space

is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away when necessary, or consider building seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat, for example, and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. Armed with some basic design principles, the time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the sunshine day after day (we live in hope). And who knows, your efforts may also provide a longterm return. Creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion, and turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may even add value to your property.

Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? It’s certainly the case in my garden! In no time at all they come into growth, produce sizeable leaves and stems and quite often seem to be flowering and then seeding in only a few weeks. Top of my weed hate list is that tiny and innocuous looking one called hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). It produces a rather attractive little rosette of leaves which in no time at all is topped with a short spike with tiny and indeed pretty white flowers. So why do I despise it? It is simply that it spreads by pinging out its seeds within such a short space of time that if you don’t pull them

34

up very promptly you soon have what amounts to a forest of these plants all over your garden. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ and this could mean your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or even your lawn. So what is it that makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities in order to grow in the way they do, and sometimes compete actively with the nearby garden plants that you are so carefully nurturing. • Some of them grow so rapidly that they can create shade and so stunt the growth of smaller plants nearby.

• Those which have an almost ground-cover like effect can soon swamp garden plants and cause their growth to be distorted or held back. • Occasionally weeds may also harbour pests or diseases which can then move on to your garden plants. Everyone has some weeds in their garden, but what can you do to minimise the problems they cause, yet avoid spending hours on end with a hoe in your hand or a sprayer at your fingertips? • Always try and get on top of weeds early in the year removing as many as you can before your garden plants start to grow strongly will make weeding easier and also cut down on the amount of

35

competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. My favourite is UK designed with a heart-shaped head and a blade on all edges, meaning that you are hoeing every time you pull or push the hoe – it also has a relatively small head, making it easier to hoe in confined spaces, between plants and in gaps in between rows without risk of damage to your plants; find out more on my website. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed, as this often causes more weed seeds to germinate, and even if these have been lying dormant in the soil for some while, as soon as the soil is disturbed they come to life - so if you are not careful you may make the problem worse. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring many more seeds to the surface and encourages weed seed germination; hence it is best to put up with a few weeds during the growing season.

     

36

• Whatever you do, it is essential to remove your weeds before they set seed – that old saying of ‘one year’s seeds is seven years’ weeds’ really is true in many cases. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. • Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. All this means is that you get the area in which you intend to sow prepared well in advance of your proposed seed sowing

Domestic, Commercial, Industrial New Roofs & Re-Roofs Flat Roofing & Pitched Roofing Repairs & Maintenance Fascias & Guttering Free Quotes

date. This allows dormant weed seeds to germinate so you can then carefully remove the weed seedlings, and then sow or plant up as you wish. Because you have already removed one major flush of weeds, you tend to have fewer problems later. • Don’t forget the importance of a good deep mulch; many weeds can be kept at bay or the seeds prevented from germinating successfully if you cover the soil surface with a mulch which is a minimum of two or preferably three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) deep. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything. Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your WiFi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats, such as Google’s Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house.

40

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Both Apple and Google have bet on home automation as one of the next big things, so they’re encouraging firms to

make even more smart devices although inevitably, Apple and Google’s systems aren’t compatible with one another so you need to pick sides. That’ll change in the longer term, because it’s in nobody’s interest to have rival, incompatible systems for such basics as light switches and heating controls, but at the moment it’s really important to check compatibility - so for example if you want to control smart home technology via an Apple iPhone or Apple Watch, you should look for devices that support Apple’s HomeKit. If you don’t, you could end up in a situation where you need a different app for each smart home product you buy, which is hardly making things simple. If you’re wondering what’s so smart about smart home technology, the answer is that by connecting different things together you can make interesting things happen. For example, Philips’ Hue bulbs work with Apple’s Siri voice recognition, so you can say “Hey Siri! Set scene to movie!” and the lights will change. Nest learns your habits to work out the best times and temperatures for heating your home, and can talk to your phone, see that you’re

heading home from work and make sure the house is nice and toasty for your arrival. Sky’s latest Sky Q system can send video - including your recordings - from your Sky box to any other room in the house, or to your phone or tablet when you’re far from home. There’s a catch, of course. Because this is all brand new technology, it’s quite expensive so if you fancy a Bluetoothenabled DeLonghi coffee machine that you can command from the sofa, it’ll cost £1,500. Even relatively simple devices can be expensive, so for example smart plugs for remotely turning things on and off cost around £40, while a starter kit of three Philips Hue bulbs and a hub will set you back £149. Upgrading from Sky+HD to Sky Q costs from £99 to £249 and then comes in at £56 per month. As ever, being first on the block with new technology doesn’t come cheap so maybe the really smart homes will wait until the technology gets cheaper before taking the plunge. the day. Plus, as it’s 100% natural (93% organic), it’s gentle enough to use on even my daughter’s sensitive skin. I have very dry skin, so tend to use rich body butters. But sometimes I like something a bit lighter, that doesn’t take half an hour to sink in.

Odylique’s Rose Velvet Body Lotion, £29, has proven a godsend. It’s a powerhouse of botanical ingredients, including aloe, avocado, cocoa bean, coconut and rose petals, smells gorgeous and absorbs quickly. My skin just drinks it up, and feels much softer and more hydrated for the rest of

Continuing on with the rose theme, another of my beauty essentials at the moment is

Mixtress’s It’s All Roses Toner, £10.95. I find most toners too drying for my skin, but this one is really hydrating. The main ingredient is rose water, from petals that have been steamed to extract the oil and juice. Unsurprisingly, it smells beautiful and is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. I like to keep it to hand to spritz if my skin feels dried out by central

heating or air-conditioning. It’s great at removing any last traces of makeup, and leaves skin feeling wonderfully soft. I try a lot of cleansers as a beauty writer, but

Akamuti’s Sweet Orange Facial Cleanser, £7, is one of my all-time favourites. The sweet orange oil works as a natural exfoliator, to wipe away dead skin cells and leave me with softer, ‘glowier’ skin. Other natural oils, including sweet almond and olive oil, ‘feed’ my skin and leave it softer and plumper. It’s effective at removing makeup (including mascara), but gentle enough for even my sensitive skin. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s superb value for money. A new lipstick always feels like a real indulgence. More so than a mascara or pretty much any other cosmetic product. A pop of colour and I’m set for whatever lies ahead that day. Clarins’ new Joli

Rouge Brilliant Lipsticks, £19.50, are a real treat. Formulated with organic marsh samphire extract and mango oil, they’re very hydrating, so leave lips feeling utterly pampered. With a choice of 12 colours, there’s one to suit any skin tone. Guava gets my vote for daytime wear, though coral tulip comes a very close second. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to skincare, so I do love a product that makes it easier.

48

Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask, £52, by Origins does just that. As implied by the name, you massage it into your skin before bed, then forget about it. It absorbs into your skin, so you don’t need to faff around with cotton wool pads or a muslin cloth to remove it. Natural ingredients sourced from around the globe include Indian Commiphora, a tree resin that works to stimulate skin’s own anti-ageing Hyaluronic Acid. The mask helps to tighten, lift and plump skin, so you look fresher-faced in the morning, even if the kids/dog/partner woke you up several times in the night.

Watch out! The cabbage-crunching, criminal mastermind, Gangsta Granny is coming to Northampton Birmingham Stage Company, the acclaimed producers of Horrible Histories, are bringing their world premiere of David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny to Northampton’s Royal & Derngate from Tuesday 12 to Saturday 16 July immediately prior to a West End run. Walliams, who is one of the judges on the popular Britain’s Got Talent TV show and creator of the ground-breaking comedy series, Little Britain, is now the best-selling author for children in the country. David began his publishing career in early 2008 with his debut novel The Boy in the Dress. Then, after writing two other popular stories, in 2011 he published Gangsta Granny, which was shortlisted for both The Red House Children’s Book Award and for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. At Christmas 2013 a TV version of Gangsta Granny was shown on BBC One with an all-star cast including David Walliams himself. Gangsta Granny went straight to number 1 in the children’s book charts and his books have been translated into no fewer than 30 languages. David Walliams said at the first night of Gangsta Granny from the stage at Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre: “What a fantastic show! Superb! And so much better than the book!” It’s Friday night and Ben knows that means only one thing – staying with Granny! There will be cabbage soup, cabbage pie and cabbage cake and Ben knows one thing for sure – it’s going to be sooooooooo boring! But what Ben doesn’t know is that Granny has a secret – and Friday nights are about to get more exciting than he could ever imagine, as he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with his very own Gangsta Granny! Gangsta Granny is a must for all families as the show will be enjoyed by everyone from 5 to 105. It is both laugh -out-loud funny with some brilliant comic scenes but also has some very moving and truthful things to say about family relationships. Gangsta Granny can be seen live on the Derngate stage from Tuesday 12 to Saturday 16 July. Performance times vary and tickets are priced from £15 to £19*. To check times or to book, call Box Office on 01604 624811 or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk. * A charge of £3 applies for all transactions over £15. Does not apply to Groups, Friends or Disabled Patrons, and is pertransaction, not per-ticket.

1. Explore the local neighbourhood – remember the old adage – the three most important factors are location, location and location. Look out for things such as: transport links, local amenities, upkeep of the streets, local schools, hospitals and doctors, crime rates, and try to get a feel for the surrounding community. 2. What can’t you live with? – Love the property but can’t live with the kitchen? Or the carpet? Or need to completely make-over the bathroom? Don’t forget to factor these costs in, especially if you plan to do the work soon after moving in. 3. Plan ahead – Mortgage fees, legal fees, moving costs and stamp duty can all make moving house an expensive process. So plan to stay in your home as long as you can by thinking about your medium and longer term requirements. 4. Does your mobile work – It might seem trivial in the grand scheme of property tick boxes, but lack of signal in your home might become a real bugbear over time. Check there’s decent broadband too! 5. Parking – Does the property come with allocated parking? If not, is it easy enough to find a space? Do you have to pay extra for residents parking? These are all worth confirming beforehand, to prevent unexpected cost or inconvenience. 6. Move furniture around – This will allow you to gauge the true size of the rooms and also potentially uncover any problems, such as shoddy paintwork, cracks in the wall, flooring issues, that

52

have been tactically hidden. 7. Everyday functionality – Don’t forget to check that there is decent central heating and that the house is insulated and double glazed. These will make a big difference to your energy bills but also to how nice the house is to live in. Confirm the basics such as the taps, light switches and plug sockets are all in working order, and open and close the doors and windows to ensure they’re functional. 8. Pay for a good survey – Unless you are an expert it is usually well upgrading from the standard valuation survey. A building surveyor will identify any structural issues with the property as well as issues such as damp, woodworm or dry rot. 9. Bills – Try and find out how much the council tax, service charges and general bills will be. This will allow you to calculate your average monthly outgoings and the overall affordability of the property. 10. Use your senses – Listen out for high noise levels, for example, loud neighbours or a nearby railway. Also, be sure to check for unusual smells – you might not see the physical signs of damp, but it quite often gives off a musty aroma. Be sure to visit the property during different times of the day, e.g. rush hour, weekends, during the school run, to see if it makes a deterring difference. Remember to visit in daylight as well as in the evening! Chris Stone, Horts Estate Agents 01604 616884, www.horts.co.uk

There’s no greater advert for a car than a starring role in a movie – and for BMW there have been a few! One of the biggest was when BMW took over the Bond franchise with a centrepiece in 1995 blockbuster GoldenEye. Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, drives the first generation Z3 with Bond girl Natalya Simonova, played by Izabella Scorupco, in the passenger seat around Cuba before the final mission. As with many Bond cars, the Z3 was kitted out with the latest gadgets, including a parachute braking system, all-point radar, missiles housed behind the headlights and the iconic ejector seat. With little need for the Z3 in GoldenEye, which involved Bond driving a tank through Moscow, Brosnan returned in Tomorrow Never Dies and this film included one of the most

56

impressive Bond cars, thanks to the amount of tech on-board.

final car of the 20th century, the Z8 roadster.

Bond was given a 750iL that included bulletproof windows, electrified door handles, tear gas, spike dispenser and missiles concealed in the roof. The most impressive feature of the lot, however, was the fact the car could be remote controlled from a touchpad in Bond’s phone.

With a modern and stylish roadster to accompany one of the most stylish film characters, the Z8 was met with an unfortunate end when a helicopter wielding a circular saw cut the car in half at a caviar factory. Shame. It was fitted with surface-to-air missiles that had taken out a helicopter previously and it even had six cup holders, so it was very useful.

In the famous chase through a multi-storey car park, Bond drives the 750iL from the back seat to remain under cover and thanks to the screen on his phone can see everything. After jumping out of the car, Bond drives the BMW into the assailants before driving off the car park and into a rental car shop several floors below. BMW’s most recent appearance in the Bond franchise was in The World Is Not Enough, and to close the century, BMW provided their

As a main character, Jason Statham’s E38 735i in 2002’s The Transporter is pretty key, with much of the early action involving the 7 Series. One of its best moments is the chase following the bank robbery, where Frank drives superbly around the streets and ends up jumping off a bridge onto a car transporter lorry. Noted for its driving sequences, 1998 film Ronin - set in Paris and

Nice - involved plenty of action, and with the film nearing its final act, a BMW E34 M5 took place in one of the best chases in film. With the director wanting realism from every sequence, the Paris chase involved the M5, driven by Natascha McElhone’s Deirdre, with Robert De Niro pursuing in a Peugeot 406. The M5 dances between the traffic on both sides of the road, causing havoc as it drives around the congested city.

intercept the film’s protagonist and prevent the start of a nuclear war. The V ED swept in and out of the Mumbai traffic and with a special HUD with navigation screen it looked pretty cool too. Other honourable mentions for BMW include the black and orange E24 633 CSi from Back to the Future II, the E28 5 Series from The Bourne Supremacy and Robert De Niro’s E31 850i from heist movie, The Score.

Through tunnels and against the motorway traffic, the M5’s sporting pedigree is shown off, with the throaty six-cylinder engine screaming throughout. The only way to take it down was a pot shot from Jean Reno hitting one of the tyres, causing the M5 to flip. We jump forward a little with our final car on the list to 2011, with the fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible series. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol involved one of the best concept designs, the Vision EfficientDynamic from 2009, and was the precursor to the i8 electric sports car. It was involved in the final act where Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, needed to
