Message from the Chairman At the time of writing this article, the Annual General Meeting has just been held. I am pleased to tell you that the attendance was the largest I have seen. We decided to change the emphasis of the meeting, in such a way that business was swiftly dealt with, and an entertaining afternoon was enjoyed by all. Peter and Carol Haines, who perform under the name of Zing entertained us for an hour. They sang songs that we all knew and liked, and told some anecdotes. I could see smiles on everyone’s face. We also provided free tea, coffee or cold drinks; as well as cake, cup cakes and biscuits free of charge. A raffle of some good prizes donated by companies such as Tesco helped to fund the cost. The idea, proposed by Martyn White, was excellent. The entertainment helped us to meet our objective of improving the wellbeing of our members by providing a social gathering where all could meet talk and enjoy the experience. Next year we will hold the AGM in Wellingborough. The town has a lot of active members, who cannot attend in Northampton. We must therefore go to them. We plan to offer them some similar entertainment, to encourage attendance and offer a pleasant afternoon out for them. During the last year we have continued to provide opportunities for many of our members to have a social outing of some sort. More than 1000 seats on coach outings were available. Coffee mornings and afternoons are still running and generally well attended. A book club is happening in Northampton each month and an exercise class every week. Several members are enjoying Sunday Lunch at a local restaurant in Northampton. There are many opportunities for our age group to socialise and exercise on the website. We also add as many as we can into this magazine. We will continue to try to provide more opportunities for our members and we will attempt to influence the powers that be to make better provision for the older generation in Northamptonshire.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Northampton area and manager

Trevor Skidmore agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

COMPETITION TIME WIN tickets to the ROYAL & DERNGATE

In 1989 a seemingly invincible Margaret Thatcher ruthlessly sacked Geoffrey Howe, her Foreign Secretary. She foolishly thought she had nothing to fear from her one-time friend and political ally. After all, his speaking skills had famously been compared to ‘being savaged by a dead sheep’! But inspired by his wife Elspeth, Howe destroyed the Prime Minister’s career with one of the deadliest political speeches ever made. Dead Sheep which opened in London to huge critical acclaim last year mixes tragedy and comedy in an entertaining tale of loyalty, betrayal and revenge. This witty new drama stars Spitting Image’s Steve Nallon as Margaret Thatcher, Paul Bradley (EastEnders) as Geoffrey Howe, Graham Seed (Nigel Pargetter in The Archers), Carol Royale (Life Without George, Heartbeat and Casualty), John Wark (Toast) and Tony Bell (Shakespeare In Love, Noel Coward Theatre). For your chance to WIN a pairs of tickets for the opening night of ‘Dead Sheep’ on Monday 19th September at 7.45pm, simply send us your answer to the following question: In her time, Margaret Thatcher was the leader of which political party ? August at Cramden Nurseries Cramden Nursery is a family business. It was set up over 50 years ago by John Mitchell. Today it is run by his daughter Emily and her partner Nic. A walk round the nursery accompanied by Emily allowed me to discover what is looking great at Cramden Nursery this month. “Agapanthus really come into their own in August” Emily tells me. They are wonderful tropical looking plants with large spherical flower heads, made up of individual trumpet like florets. The flower colour ranges from deep blue, mauve and lilac through to an eyecatching sky blue. They are also available in beautiful fresh white. There are large pots of flowering Agapanthus dotted throughout the nursery producing impressive and beautiful displays of blue and white flowers.

The wonderful coloured leaves of the Heucheras were so enticing, I could not resist taking home with me one of their “Lime Marmalade” plants, with its ruffled leaves and bright lime green colour they looked too good to leave behind New to Cramden this year are Rudbeckias. The variety they have chosen to grow this year is “Little Goldstar”, which is a dwarf variety reaching 35cm tall producing masses of golden yellow daisy shaped flowers with fine petals shown off against a dark central cone. They flower from midsummer well into the autumn and they are part of Emily’s drive to stretch out the season here at Cramden Nursery into the autumn months. Building on their success of the Violas they grew last autumn they have grown another crop of them and added some pansies too in response to requests for them. Emily is excited about the coming autumn and the prospect of keeping the nursery in colour well into October. The nursery will be open Monday to Saturday 9-5 throughout September. All plants are home grown and the staff are very helpful. There is plenty of parking at the nursery. Cramden Nursery is well worth a visit for all gardeners.

Age Uk Inspire & Include Programe As part of our dementia awareness programme Age UK Northamptonshire is working with Northamptonshire Sport to promote sporting activities such as Bowls, Boccia and Kurling for people living with dementia and for disabled people. Statistics show that dementia is one of the biggest health crises facing the UK and is predicted to continue to rise in the future. Our programme of Inspire and Include is an exciting opportunity to encourage these groups to socialise and enjoy a more active and fulfilling life. For details please call Kate Kingston on 01604 611200.

Patients Participation Group (PPG) The PPG is formed of patients of the surgery who work with the practice to give a voice to patients, encourage health education, self help initiatives and influence local health and social care providers. Over the past few years we have undertaken health and self help events. On 8 June 2016 held an informal afternoon entitled “Living with Stress & Anxiety.” We thank all the representatives from the various organisations who were in attendance and gave information and a short talk. In July 2013 we had a ‘Sun Awareness’ week where members of the PPG gave out leaflets and talked to people about being sun aware. In May 2015 there was a well attended event “Living with Arthritis.” Ladies from Arthritis Care gave a talk and spoke to people about services and organisation available. Recently the PPG undertook a survey on how service cuts at St Luke’s would affect patients. The results, made available to the Nene CCG are on our website. If you are interested in future events or joining the PPG please visit the St Luke’s website: www. stlukesprimarycarecentre.co.uk/ or email Moira Chapman at: dustonppg@gmail.com

Over the autumn we will be in Badby, Barby, Braunston, Newnham and Norton, as well as parked up outside the Tesco in Daventry (see picture above). One thing I get asked a lot about at the moment is basic computer lessons, especially for the elderly, and I have some free one-to-one tutor help available, so don’t miss out! Do come and find us and pick our brains on matters that affect you, your family or friends”. The exact information on the tour dates, destinations and times can be found on the SNVB website at www.snvb.org.uk - Click on the Village Networks logo.

Across the County One Weekend, One County, 20 million steps ‘x2’ We would like to invite you to be part of our 20 million steps weekend on Friday 23rd September to Sunday 25th September. Help us to make a difference by getting as many people across Northamptonshire walking over the weekend. We would like you to help by organising your own walking activities over the event weekend, joining in with an organised event or helping us to promote the campaign. Staying active has real health benefits including: maintaining a healthy weight; reducing blood pressure; building healthy muscles and bones; improving balance; increasing good cholesterol; reducing the risk of falls. People who stay active get less stressed, sleep better, feel better and have a 30% lower chance of getting depressed. FREE Guided Bike Rides Across Northants Sky Ride Local rides are FREE small, weekly community bike rides that give you a chance to get out and explore your local area. They’re led by a British Cycling trained ride leader who is on hand to provide support and give you a few tips on how to improve your cycling, whatever your age or ability. Rides vary in levels, from beginners to more experienced cyclists, so you can pick a level to suit your skills and enjoyment. Whatever level you choose, you’ll be riding on safe routes, with your ride leaders. And if you haven’t dusted off your bike for a while, they’ll happily check it over for you.
