MORRIS BART SR., LECTURE SERIES AT THE J THE AUSCHWITZ CLASSROOM: LEARNING, TEACHING AND UNDERSTANDING EMPATHY AND COEXISTENCE IN 20TH CENTURY POLAND

In the summer of 2016, Sarah Cramsey returned to Oswiecim ten years after her first extended visit to the Polish town better known by its infamous German name, Auschwitz. Sarah had traveled to Poland to work and learn for two months at the Auschwitz Jewish Center alongside peers from both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds. Spending two months in southeastern Poland solidified both her commitment to study for a doctorate in the modern Jewish history of east central Europe and, ironically, her inability to fully understand that tragedy which had unfolded in this sad yet beautiful place. One decade later, with her Ph.D. and glossy new business cards from Tulane University in hand, Sarah returned to Oswiecim last June to once again become part of a classroom, this time as a professor. In this presentation, Dr. Cramsey will take her audience on a journey that is at once personal and professional. She will explore how learning and teaching in the Auschwitz classroom can illuminate the trajectory of Jewish-Gentile coexistence in modern Poland, as well as engender empathy transcending the potential of classroom walls. Lunch will be served. RSVP by Thursday, November 30 to Rachel Ruth at 897-0143 or rachel@nojcc.org. MONDAY, DECEMBER 4 11:45 AM - 1:30 PM NO CHARGE MEMBERS / $10 NON-MEMBERS NEW ORLEANS JCC – UPTOWN

LUNCH & LEARN WITH THE RABBI

Join us for our monthly lunch and learn as we discuss interesting topics with a local Jewish clergy member. This month, it’s Rabbi Reimer from Temple Sinai. A light lunch will be served. RSVP by Monday, December 4 to Rachel Ruth at 897-0143 or rachel@nojcc.org. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7 12:00 - 1:30 PM $3 MEMBERS / $5 NON-MEMBERS NEW ORLEANS JCC – UPTOWN

MOVIE DAY: HIDDEN FIGURES

SENIORS ON THE GO: A STUDIO IN THE WOODS

Our next Seniors on the Go excursion takes us to A Studio in the Woods. This program of Tulane University’s Bywater Institute is located on 7.66 acres on the Mississippi River in New Orleans. It is dedicated to preserving the endangered bottomland hardwood forest and providing within it a peaceful retreat where artists and scholars can work uninterrupted. Managing Director Ama Rogan will speak about ASITW’s artistic and scholarly residencies and programming. Environmental Curator David Baker will lead a guided walk through the woods detailing the native flora and fauna as well as his work to eradicate invasive species on the property.

In the race to space between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, three black female mathematicians play a key role in launching astronaut John Glenn into outer space, making him the first American to orbit Earth. Based on true events and actual people, this is an inspirational and heartwarming story about three black women who held key positions at NASA during the critical stages of the manned space program of the 1960s. Movie snacks will be served. RSVP by Monday, December 18 to Rachel Ruth at 897-0143 or rachel@nojcc.org. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21 12:00 - 2:15 PM NO CHARGE MEMBERS & NON-MEMBERS NEW ORLEANS JCC – UPTOWN

Bring your own brown bag lunch and drink. We will enjoy a picnic together after the tour. Attendees should wear woods-friendly attire and footwear. There is no charge for the bus, thanks to a generous donation from Morris Bart. There is a suggested donation of $10 per person for ASTITW. RSVP by Monday, December 11 to Rachel Ruth at 897-0143 or rachel@nojcc.org. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14 11:00 AM - 3:30 PM $10 MEMBERS & NON-MEMBERS NEW ORLEANS JCC – UPTOWN

The stress of everyday life, including the ways in which we move — or don’t move — our bodies, is often found lodged in the tightness and discomfort of our hips. Join Kelly Bond-Osorio for an all-levels practice that starts with a heat-building, hip and thigh-opening sun salutation sequence to prepare the body for a series of hip openers to increase your range of motion in all directions. We will spend time breaking down and deeply exploring the postures, making possible the release of stuck and suppressed emotions that are often held within our bodies and, in particular, our hips. This workshop is designed to leave you feeling lighter and freer, physically as well as emotionally!
