Celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut with the flavors of Israel and a screening of the delightful film In Search of Israeli Cuisine. The last film in this year’s Cathy and Morris Bart Jewish Cultural Arts Series, In Search of Israeli Cuisine is a portrait of the Israeli people told through food. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Puerto Ricans’ U.S. citizenship and the impending referendum on statehood, Beyond the Canvas: Contemporary Art from Puerto Rico showcases the work of Zilia Sánchez (b.1926), Julio Suárez (b.1947), Arnaldo Roche Rabell (b.1955), Pedro Vélez (b.1971), and Elsa María Meléndez (b.1974). Spanning several generations, these five artists challenge the notion of the canvas as a flat surface for painted images. Through tensionbased strategies applied on the fabric— whether pulling, rubbing, folding, slashing, ripping, or warping—they lend their works a distinctive three-dimensionality. Their provocative treatments allude to the island’s current socioeconomic crisis in works that suggest rupture, tension, and escape. Christine Lehmann is a senior attorney at the Louisiana Capital Assistance Center, a New Orleans based non-profit that represents indigent defendants against whom the state is seeking the death penalty. Christine will speak to us about the current state of the death penalty as a punishment in Louisiana and nationally, given concerns regarding the potential innocence of some on death row, the execution of the mentally ill, racism and geographical arbitrariness in the implementation of the death penalty, lethal injection, and the overall cost of the death penalty.
