MORRIS BART SR., LECTURE SERIES AT THE J CARING FOR NEW ORLEANS YOUTH

Adolescence is a unique time period in a person’s life, and teenagers and young adults face a myriad of issues that directly affect their physical and emotional wellbeing. Puberty, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental health issues, bullying, abuse, substance use, dating, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, eating disorders, obesity, sports injuries, learning to drive, gun safety, social media, the list goes on and on. In addition, growing up here in New Orleans often presents its own sets of challenges with our endemic poverty, racism, violence, and the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina.

Julie Finger, MD, MPH, right, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Tulane School of Medicine. As a pediatrician who specializes in adolescent medicine, Dr. Finger provides health care to at-risk youth in nontraditional clinic settings, including a homeless shelter and a vocational school. She will explore some of the issues facing the youth in our community and discuss how they impact the health of the patients she serves. Lunch will be served.
