WELCOME
This may be the strongest season of films screened at New Park for a few years. Every week there is at least one ‘notto-be-missed’ film, with a handful more quality selections programmed around it.
Look out for ‘Blonde,’ ‘Emily,’ ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ ‘Decision to Leave’ and ‘Bones and All,’ to name but a handful. We also bring back the film that came second in the Chichester International Film Festival Audience Award – ‘Return to Dust.’ We will of course bring back the winner, ‘Lunana,’ once it gets its national release.
To complement the release of another fine film – ‘The Menu’ starring Ralph Fiennes – we will be giving away a £50 voucher to the Ivy Chichester Brasserie. All you need to do is buy a ticket to the film, and your name will be automatically entered into the draw. See pg33 for details.
All this in the same season as the French Film Festival UK returns to our screens. 21 films –mostly previews, with some remastered classics – and an illustrated talk on Isabel Huppert. Look out for the French Film Festival logo throughoutthis brochure (starts pg9).
This season we will be unveiling a surprise weekend of 2 for 1 cinema. Bring a friend along for free and spread the magic of Chichester Cinema as we head into the Autumn. To be first to hear about the selected weekend, sign up for our email newsletter. You can do this at the bottom of any page on our website: chichestercinema.org.
We are sad to announce that our relief projectionist Howard Johnson passed away suddenly in early October. He was the kindest of gentlemen, and an extremely knowledgeable projectionist with years of experience. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

THE LOST KING
An amateur historian defies the stodgy academic establishment in her efforts to find King Richard III’s remains, which were lost for over 500 years.
Sally Hawkins (‘Paddington,’ ‘The Shape of Water’) stars in the remarkable true story of how an ordinary woman discovered the long-lost remains of King Richard III in a Leicester car park. Struggling in an unfulfilling job, she is frequently undermined by her male colleagues. But everything changes however, when she attends a theatre production of Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’ with her son. ‘The Lost King’ is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. Also stars Steve Coogan who co-wrote the screenplay.

Anaïs is a 30-year-old woman who is broke and has a lover she doesn’t think she loves anymore. She meets Daniel, who immediately falls for her, but Daniel lives with Emilie - whom Anaïs also falls for! Back after two well-received Chichester Film Festival screenings. Struggling to complete her thesis, thirtysomething Anaïs wanders aimlessly - a free spirit with no sense of direction but capable of turning heads and drawing the attention of others wherever she goes. In comes Daniel, an older married book publisher who takes a shine to Anaïs. Anaïs becomes less enamoured with the older man and instead finds herself falling for Emilie – his wife. Some movies just feel like spring; this is certainly one. A bright breezy romancebursting with energy. (Subtitles)
BLONDE
Boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements. ‘Blonde’ is an exploration of the idea of Marilyn Monroe (Ana deArmas is luminous in the lead). It’s as much a biopic of the film star as ‘Elvis’ is a biopic of Elvis Presley. It touches on a series of actual, factual events as a road map, from her movies to her marriages. But ultimately, it’s a fantasia of fame, which increasingly becomes a hellscape. Director Andrew Dominik writes, “How does an unwanted child deal with becoming the most wanted woman in the world? Does it require her to split herself in half? Turn a dazzling image toward the world, as the unwanted self, suffocates within.” Ambitious film-making.

Paris, 1900. Penniless writer Rodolfo believes that art is all he needs – until he meets Mimì, the lonely seamstress who lives upstairs. So begins a timeless love story that blooms, fades, and rekindles with the passing seasons. But while the couple’s friends Marcello and Musetta passionately row and make up, a force greater than love threatens Rodolfo and Mimì. Richard Jones’s production evokes the vivid contrasts of fin de siècle Paris, from Bohemian apartments to glittering arcades. Directed by Richard Jones. RÓISE AND FRANK
A heart-warming and charming tale of a widow who has given up on life, becoming convinced that a stray dog is the reincarnation of her hurling-loving husband. Róise soon comes to believe that the dog is, in fact, Frank reincarnated. He has come back to be with her again... and to coach the local sports team. You’d need a shard of ice in your heart not to be charmed even just a little by this eccentric Irish-language comedy – not a dry eye in the houseguaranteed at the closing credits. LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS
Made during the Nazi occupation of France, Marcel Carne’s romantic epic of the 19th century theatre world is a life-affirming tribute to love, Paris and the stage. Set among the actors, criminals and aristocrats who orbit around a theatre on Paris’s so-called ‘Boulevard du Crime’. Their romantic entanglements play out in a drama of Balzacian colour and complexity – one that pays equal due to each strata of Parisian society, from the noblemen to the working-class audiences. Released within a year of the liberation of Paris, this celebration of the capital’s bygone past met with enormous and immediate success and acclaim, becoming one of the year’s most popular films. In 1995, it was voted the greatest French film ever made by 600 industry professionals, while it was also a top 100 title in Sight & Sound’s Greatest Films Ever Made poll. Cast includes Arletty,Jean-Louis Barrault and Pierre Brasseur. (Subtitles)

ILLUSIONS PERDUES
After its very popular screenings at the Chichester Film Festival, we present the story of the rise and fall of a young man in Paris, who dreamed of becoming a writer and became a journalist. In 1821, Lucien de Rubempré arrives in Paris as a sensitive, and idealistic young poet determined to write a reputation-making novel. Instead, he finds himself swept into journalism, whose influence and reach is booming with the help of the printing press, widely available of late. Under the mentorship of cynical editorÉtienne Lousteau. Lucien agrees to write rave theatre reviews for bribes, achieving material success at the expense of his conscience. ‘Lost Illusions’ is sumptuous yet piercing, an expertly plotted social-relations saga of the kind that once typified prestige Hollywood cinema, and it dives into moral quandaries rather than dispensing easy bromides. Cast includes Benjamin Voisin, Cecile DeFrance and Vincent Lacoste. (Subtitles)

Actor turned writer-director Frances O’Connor’s sensuous and loosely biographical drama about the ‘Wuthering Heights’ author Emily Brontë is a thrillingly unconventional watch. Emily (Emma Mackey) wears a mask. The world tells her she must be quiet, obedient, dutiful. She certainly must neither speak her mind nor share her thoughts, feelings and dreams. Emily though, is wildly alive. She rages with emotion, has a voice yearning to be heard, and her mind is overwhelmed by imagination. She has no interest in staying silent and doing what others want. And Emily is about to show you why. Shot with breathtaking beauty and acted with extraordinary emotion and grace, this is an involving perspective on Brontë’s interior life, exploring themes such as gender, independence, creativity, mental health and sexuality. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES
This impassioned, visually arresting interpretation of the classic German anti-war novel makes the pacifist case to contemporary audiences through its depiction of the horrible madness of World War I and the tragedy of a doomed generation. It’s 1917 and wartime in Germany, as Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) lies about his age so that he can enlist alongside his friends - all of them very young men filled with romanticized, patriotic notions. The reality of war almost immediately dismantles their exuberance.Soon (too soon) Paul is thrown into a trench, with little equipment, minimal training, and the swiftly repaired uniform of another soldier on his back. Only the hardy advice of an older veteran prevents him from becoming another hapless statistic on his first day. Also starring Daniel Brühl, this is one of the most visceral, immersive WWImovies ever made. (Subtitles)

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930)
The 1930 original film. A German youth eagerly enters World War I, but his enthusiasm wanes as he gets a first-hand view of the horror. Stirred by the speeches of glory and service by the teacher, a core group of young students in their teens, led by Lew Ayre’s Paul, take their wide eyes and youthful passion to blindly join the war cause. After a speedy basic training spent hating their local postmaster who’s also their drill sergeant in the army, the crew gets their combat dream wishes and are set to the front. Shattered quickly by the horrors of war, that dreamy lustre wears off for the boys very quickly. This film’s resonance has not diminished with time or changing movie tastes and it remains the definitive anti-war movie.
THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN
Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.
Martin McDonagh’s new film is a macabre black comedy of toxic male pride and wounded male feelings. Colin Farrell plays Padraic, a dairyman who lives with his unmarried sister. Every day promptly at two o’clock, goofy, good-natured Padraic calls for the guy heconsiders his best friend in all the world, Colm (Brendan Gleeson), so that they can go to the pub together. One day, a terrible thing happens: Colm simply decides he doesn’t want to be friends with Padraic anymore. Martin McDonagh lyrically whips every incident in the film into a mordantly funny dark fable about men’s innate inability to work together for the betterment of society at large. A must-see in this Autumn season. IRELAND/UK 2022 MARTIN MCDONAGH 109M
LA TRAVIATA
MET OPERA
Three captivating sopranos with many previous triumphs to their names - Nadine Sierra, Ermonela Jaho and Angel Blue - star as the self-sacrificing courtesan Violetta, one of opera’s ultimate heroines. Tenors Stephen Costello, Ismael Jordi (in his Met debut), and Dmytro Popov share the role of her self-centred lover Alfredo, alongsidebaritones Luca Salsi, Amartuvshin Enkhbat (another debut), and Artur Ruciński as his disapproving father. Michael Mayer’s vibrant production also features three maestros: Daniele Callegari, Marco Armiliato and Nicola Luisotti. Verdi’s musical-dramatic ability to portray the individual in a marginalized relationship to society keeps this work a mainstay on the world’s stages. The vocal and emotional scope of the title character is enormous - from her Act I show-stopper aria ‘Sempre libera degg’io’ to the haunting regret of ‘Addio, del passato’ in Act III to the extended Act II confrontation with her lover’s father, Germont.

From the early days of New Orleans jazz through to the giants of bebop and beyond, there will be exceptional music and clips telling the story of jazz and the people who have made it what it is.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG’S
An intimate and revealing look at the world-changing musician, presented through a lens of archival footage and never-beforeheard home recordings and personal conversations. Jenkins’ film excels, both in digging up footage to see how comfortable white celebrities felt around him, and in finding the unguarded moments in which he discussed his uglier interactions. Unwilling to make this a single-issue movie, Jenkins also touches on everything from Armstrong’s close relationship with his fourth wife to the modest home he loved for decades in Queens. Jenkins has made a fascinating portrait of one of 20th century America’s most essential characters..

KaitlynDever (‘Booksmart’) plays daughter Lily, but it is Lucas Bravo (‘Emilyin Paris’), who is hilarious, and almost steals the movie from Roberts and Clooney - if that is possible. ‘Ticket to Paradise’ is a romantic comedy about the sweet surprise of second chances. As for director Ol Parker, you will know him from ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ and the ‘Mamma Mia’ sequel, so expect a feelgood movie that will be a lot of fun.

Crackpot Texan oil magnate Felix Happer(Burt Lancaster) gets the idea that a small Scottish fishing village would be a marvellous acquisition for his so-rich-it-makes-yousick company, Knox Oil and Gas, so he sends an executive gophernamed MacIntyre (because that sounds Scottish, played by PeterRiegert) to close the deal and get the pipeline pencilled in. MY CHILDHOOD, MY COUNTRY
Award-winning filmmakers, Phil Grabsky and Shoaib Sharifi, present a real-life epic of boyhood and manhood, filmed across twenty years in one of the most embattled corners of the globe. This documentary following one boy’s life in Afghanistan feels like a brutal, desperately sad companion piece to Richard Linklater’s ‘Boyhood.’ Its co-directors, the British documentary-maker Phil Grabsky and Shoaib Sharifi, first started filming Mir Hussein aged seven in 2002, and they haven’t stopped. They have already made two previous films – ‘The Boy Who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan’(2004) and ‘The Boy Mir: Ten Years in Afghanistan’ (2011) – and this third gives us the complete picture: Mir, pulled along by time’s current from boyhood to the present day, married with three kids in Kabul. To be honest, it’s the opposite of life-affirming. UK 2021 PHIL GRABSKY/SHOAIB SHARIFI 90M

MY NEIGHBOUR ADOLF
Udo Kier steals the show in this bittersweet comedy about a Holocaust survivor and his enigmatic new neighbour. A universal story of a friendship between two lonely men who discover that they have more in common than they first believe. South America, 1960. A lonely and grumpy Holocaust survivor(David Hayman) convinces himself that his new neighbour (Kier) is none other than Adolf Hitler. Not being taken seriously, he starts an independent investigation to prove his claim, but when the evidence still appears to be inconclusive, Polsky is forced to engage in a relationship with the enemy in order to obtain irrefutable proof. An original, intelligent and surreal comedy… a controversial account of distrust, truth in the news, history and fear of the people around you.
ALL THAT BREATHES
The film follows two brothers who run a bird hospital dedicated to rescuing injured black kites, a staple in the skies of New Delhi, India.
In one of the world’s most populated cities, cows, rats, monkeys, frogs and hogs jostle cheek-by-jowl with people. Here, two brothers fall in love with a bird - the black kite. From their makeshift bird hospital in their tiny basement, the “kite brothers” care for thousands of these mesmeric creatures that drop daily from New Delhi’s smog-choked skies. As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate, the relationship between this Muslim family and the neglected kite forms a poetic chronicle of the city’s collapsing ecology and rising social tensions. A film as gorgeous as it isambitious, as stirring as it is terrifying. (Subtitles) UK/INDIA 2022 SHAUNAK SEN 97M

LIVING
A gentle and poignant Kazuo Ishiguro-scripted remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1953 film ‘Ikiru’ about a man dealing with a terminal diagnosis.
A buttoned-up civil servant approaching retirement, his supposed reward for a life of pointless tedium, Mr Williams receives a stomach cancer diagnosis with one year to live. And now he realises that he has been dead until this moment. He realises he may be able to achieve one thing - forcing the city authorities to build the modest little children’s playground for which local mothers have been desperately petitioning and which he and his colleagues have been smugly preventing with their bureaucratic inertia. DECISION TO LEAVE
Park Chan Wook’s (‘The Handmaiden’, ‘Oldboy’) tale of a married detective torn between infidelity and moral duty keeps the viewer off-balance at every turn in this black-widow noir.
Hae-Joon, a detective investigating a man’s death in the mountains, meets the dead man’s mysterious wife, Seo-rae. She has an alibi for the time of death, but as the circumstantial evidence mounts against her, Hae-Joon begins to fall deeply in love with this woman, who appears also to be falling for him, her protector. Is Hae-Joon going to cover up for Seo-rae? Is she all that she appears to be? The deliciously manipulative plot twists are very Hitchcockian in their way. But the style is not pastiche, which is the way that idea usually arises; this is the kind of Hitchcockian film made by someone who hasn’t necessarily seen a Hitchcock film before. Every frame is like a painting - this is not to be missed.

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS
The social hierarchy is flipped when a luxury yacht gets into trouble and its passengers have to depend on the housekeeper for survival. Celebrity model couple, Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (CharlbiDean), are invited on a luxury cruise for the uber-rich, helmed byan unhinged boat captain (Woody Harrelson). What first appeared instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivorsstranded on a desert island and fighting for survival. Ruben Östlund has previously served up delicious fare in ‘Force Majeure’ and ‘The Square’. This is pointed, barbed humour laser-focused on the beautiful and the avaricious, who can’t seem to imagine the life of people who have to work for a living. Winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. SWEDEN 2022 RUBEN ÖSTLUND 147M
The legendary Gérard Depardieu brings to remarkable life one of the most beloved characters from 20th century crime fiction in this wonderful film.
Maigret investigates the death of a young girl. There is nothing to identify her, no one seems to have known her, nor to remember her. He then meets a delinquent who strangely resembles the victim. The star himself commands an uncharacteristic stillness, dialling down his famous charisma, surrendering himself to the material. ‘Monsieur Hire’ director Leconte’s attention to detail is perfectly attuned to Maigret’s investigative style. His motive is to entertain, which he assuredly does, with empathy and flair. Cast includes Jade Labeste, Mélanie Bernier, Aurore Clément, André Wilms and Pierre Moure. (Subtitles)

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN
Hopper’s work is the most recognisable art in America – popular, praised and mysterious. Countless painters, photographers, filmmakers and musicians have been influenced by his art –but who was he, and how did a struggling illustrator create such a bounty of notable work?.
This new film takes a deep look into Hopper’s art, his life, and his relationships. From his early career as an illustrator; his wife giving up her own promising art career to be his manager; his critical and commercial acclaim; and in his own words – this film explores the enigmatic personality behind the brush. Combined with expert interviews, diaries, and a startling visual reflection of American life, Hopper brings to life America’s arguably most influential artist. Hopper is a rare artist whose work is accessible to both the casual and critical observer. Rothko, Banksy, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, and even ‘The Simpsons’ have all been inspired by the unique way Hopper captured American life.

In 19th century France, Emma Bovary, a farmer’s daughter brought up in an elegant convent, marries a dull country doctor and is soon searching for distractions.
Full of romantic aspirations and dreams of luxury, she soon throws herself into love affairs to escape boredom. Growing old amid flickering memories and teetering on the brink of survival, Bradford Movie Makers, Britain’s oldest amateur filmmaking club, pulls out all the stops to save their ancient clubhouse from its final reckoning in this quietly hilarious, profoundly moving portrait of shared artistic folly that speaks to the delusional dreamer in us all. A thoroughly moving and ultimately joyful affair. This is partly because it reminds us that,

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s ‘Mrs. Dalloway’ and made a household name by the Oscar-winning 2002 film version starring Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman, the powerful story follows three women from different eras who each grapple with their inner demons and their roles in society. The exciting premiere radiates with star power with Kelli O’Hara and Joyce DiDonato joining Fleming as the opera’s trio of heroines. Phelim McDermott directs this compelling drama, with Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct Puts’s poignant and powerful score.
ARMAGEDDON
Anthony Hopkins and Anne Hathaway star in James Gray’s deeply personal coming-of-age story about the strength of family and the generational pursuit of the American Dream. Set in the autumn of 1980, the film stars Banks Repeta as Paul, about 10 years old, who has his head in the clouds. School doesn’t interest the boy, who wants to be an artist - a notion that displeases his weary working-class parents Esther and Irving. But Paul finds a more receptive audience with his new friend Johnny, who appears to be one of the only Black kids at his Flushing, Queens school, and encourages his rebellious side. It’s a truly poignant, troubling, and ultimately brilliant work of memory and self-implication.

NO BEARS
Now imprisoned Jafar Panahi tenderly shows the difficulty of leaving Iran. It portrays two parallel love stories. In both, the lovers are troubled by hidden, inevitable obstacles. Every film Jafar Panahi makes is an act of resistance. Currently in jail, the Iranian director has spent the past 12 years in and out of house arrest. In ‘No Bears’, he goes to a village close to the porous border with Azerbaijan to tell a story involving a couple who are trying to get out to Paris with stolen passports, a film crew following them, a second young couple trying to escape a forced marriage, and a village full of gossips and muckrakers. A complex work of novelistic density, this is among the boldest and most accomplished statements from one of the world’s exemplaryfilmmakers. (Subtitles)
