NEVER TOO LATE

FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY

Starring stalwarts like James Cromwell, Jackie Weaver and Jack Thompson, this enjoyable Aussie comedy follows a group of seniors as they plan to break out of their retirement home. Four former prisoners of war who famously broke out of their camp during the Vietnam War and who are all now residents of the same retirement home for returned veterans. The four men devise a plan to break out of the retirement home in an attempt to fulfil their individual dreams. Angus (screen veteran Jack Thompson) is “forgetting” things and the Brit, Caine (Dennis Waterman), has even more serious health concerns. The slapstick and escape planning set-up suggests a comedic ‘Great Escape’, but the film is also at pains to explore some serious aspects of ageing. The movie evokes ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ as much as it does ‘Grumpy Old Men.’ It is impossible not to be charmed by these sweet, grumpy and funny old men. AUSTRALIA 2021 MARK LAMPRELL 95M

BRIAN WILSON: LONG PROMISED ROAD

Join The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson on an intimate journey through his legendary career as he reminisces with Rolling Stone editor and long-time friend, Jason Fine. “He’s a talker” is a phrase that has never been used to describe Brian Wilson, then - in the Beach Boys’ original 1960s heyday - or especially now. So director Brent Wilson might have been taking on one of the more quixotic filmmaking quests of all time when he set out to make a documentary that would consist primarily of pulling thoughts and memories out of one of the great musical geniuses of the past century, whose shyness with interviews and mental health struggles are well known. Bruce Springsteen and Elton John provide further insights in this affectionate and satisfying film. 2021 USA BRENT WILSON 93M 4 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

DEATH ON THE NILE

PERFORMANCE

Looking to follow the global success of ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ Kenneth Branagh has assembled a cast of Hollywood’s bright young things for a blood-spattered cruise down the Nile. A classic whodunnit, based on the Agatha Christie novel, picks up with Branagh reprising his role as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. This time, he is holidaying aboard a luxurious cruise ship when a couple’s honeymoon is suddenly cut short when one of the passengers is found murdered. Poirot must identify the killer before they strike again. The mise-en-scene is ravishing while the cast including Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Sophie Okonedo and Russel Brand look a million dollars. Sultry and lusty Branagh has turned up the heat in this version. Sexier and bolder than the 1978 version, expect oodles of glamour, suspects popping up everywhere and delicious Egyptian locations. Murder has never looked so good. USA 2020 KENNETH BRANAGH 127M

JOCKEY

An aging jockey (Clifton Collins Jr.) hopes to win one last title for his long-time trainer (Molly Parker), who has acquired what appears to be a championship racehorse. The years - and injuries - have taken a toll on his body, throwing into question his ability to continue his lifelong passion. And the arrival of a young rookie rider (Moises Arias), who claims to be his son, and whom he takes under his wing, further complicates the path to fulfilling his dream. Collins is convincing from frame one in a career-defining performance where he is so wonderfully genuine and believable as someone who has seen a lot of stories like this play out and has a pretty good idea how this one ends. YOU WILL DIE AT 20

Sudan’s first Oscar entry, about a boy destined to die young, is warmed by compassion and gorgeous, dreamy imagery. Shortly after Muzamil was born, the village’s holy man predicts that he will die at age 20. Growing up knowing his fate, his life changes when he meets the free-spirited Suliman. Boasting a terrific visual sensitivity, this rare film from Sudan has a fable-like quality in its depiction of an isolated village where superstition constrains its people. The villagers taunt Muzamil, referring to him as “son of death”. Increasingly isolated, with only the opportunity to study the Koran, then cinephile Suliman enters his life and he encounters ideas and challenges that make him question his destiny. Director Amjad Abu Alala’s cinematography is stunning, and the confidence of the direction belies his debut behind the camera. A vibrant and transfixing revelation, ‘You Will Die at 20’ is as novel a vision as we may see this year. (Subtitles) SUDAN 2019 AMJAD ABU ALALA 143M 6 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO

An aspiring fashion designer is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters dazzling wannabe singer, Sandie. But the glamour is not all it appears to be. Edgar Wright follows up ‘Baby Driver’ with a neat genre swerve into supernatural territory. Eloise has a fetish for the lost innocent glamour of the 60s but, moping all alone in her manky bedsit, finds herself stricken with nightly neon phantasms. Like a ghost from the future, Eloise dreams her way through a portal in time back into 60s London clubland, where she witnesses Sandie (Anya TaylorJoy), a blonde singer – exactly the kind of retro showbiz princess Eloise moonily idolises. Gradually, Eloise feels her identity merging with Sandie’s. Wright does not romanticise or glamorise Soho – he simply serves up a Valhalla of toxic glitz amid the horror. THE LOST DAUGHTER

FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY

A woman’s beach vacation takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her past. Based on Elena Ferrante’s bestselling novel. Olivia Colman gives a powerhouse turn in ‘The Lost Daughter’, prickly and combustible as Leda Caruso, a middle-aged languages professor on a working holiday in Greece. In flight from her past, possibly from herself, she stares at the sea as though it’s done her a great wrong and eats alone at the bar, repelling anyone who draws close. She haunts the resort like a ghost while other ghosts are haunting her. We get hints of her past when she is played very well by Jessie Buckley. FLUGT Depicting the refugee experience through vivid animation, ‘Flee’ pushes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking to present a moving memoir of self-discovery. ‘Flee’ tells the story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret, he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan. The best documentaries have to have suspense and tension as part of the film’s arc and ‘Flee’ has that in spades. WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY

PERFORMANCE

GÛZEN TO SÔZÔ Ryusuke Hamaguchi brings a gentle warmth to this ingenious collection of three stories united by themes of fate and mystery. In the three stories, men and women circle one another as they casually and cruelly share intimacies, express desires and voice doubts. They talk, revealing themselves as they also tease the story’s themes, fortune and fantasy included. They chat, confess, overshare, open up and lash out. Hamaguchi shows how each situation is redeemed, or at any rate altered, by a kind of miracle. For example, in the first, Meiko has the magic power to stop and rewind time so that she can play out a certain situation, or conversation, differently. This trio of stories is elegant and amusing, with a delicacy of touch and real imaginative warmth. (Subtitles) JAPAN 2021 RYÛSUKE HAMAGUCHI 121M

SWAN LAKE

BOLSHOI BALLET The most famous and popular ballet returns supported by Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score - as interpreted in full Russian style by the world class Bolshoi Ballet. Lured to the banks of a mysterious lake by his alter ego, the Evil Genius, Prince Siegfried, encounters the most beautiful swan Odette and swears his love to her. At the castle, prospective brides try to entertain the distracted Prince, but it is the ravishing swan Odile who threatens the promise Siegfried made to Odette. The legend of the enigmatic swan-woman set to Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece of a score is ballet’s most beloved production in the classical canon. The Bolshoi Ballet’s ‘Swan Lake’ exemplifies the dramatic tension and heart-stopping beauty of motion with prima ballerina Olga Smirnova leading the cast, as sensational as the black swan as she is poignant as white swan. Kenneth Branagh Talk

WHAT A STAR!

A SNAPSHOT OF SIR KENNETH BRANAGH, ONE OF OUR CINEMA’S VICE PRESIDENTS Where do we start to describe the contribution made by Sir Kenneth Branagh to the film and theatre success in this country and abroad? His multiple awards and accolades would fill several pages of any biography, but in this talk we will focus on selected highlights of his long career. After a brief look at his early life in Ireland and the UK, we will look at Branagh as an exponent of Shakespeare. Then as Hercule Poirot in two adaptations of Agatha Christie novels, ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ (2017) and ‘Death on the Nile’ (just released). We could not omit him playing Reinhard Heydrich in ‘Conspiracy’ (2001). Branagh has said that this was his most chilling role as the convener of the Wansee Conference in 1942, resulting in the Holocaust. We must not forget ‘My Weekend with Marilyn’ (2011) where he played an exasperated Olivier to Michelle William’s Marilyn Monroe, and lastly ‘Belfast’, based on his experience as a child during the ‘Troubles’. Please do join our presenter Rosemary Coxon (Education Officer of the Cinema) for this talk. 120M BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

BELFAST

An inviting and warm look at a family that is doing its best to hold together while their community fractures around them. Branagh tells his very personal story through the eyes of a young boy, and it comes alive with wonder and heart against a backdrop of rising hostilities amongst the grown-ups. Beautiful, heartfelt storytelling co-starring Ciaran Hinds and Judy Dench. UK 2021 KENNETH BRANAGH 98M

PETROV’S FLU

PETROVY V GRIPPE A comic book artist contracts flu during an epidemic and subsequently embarks on a strange journey through Russian society. In a story that ostensibly spans a day - but also zooms elastically through memories and dreams - our weary shepherd through much of the heaving insanity is jaded mechanic and comic book artist Petrov, marvelously played by Semyon Serzin with a slumped, hangdog demeanor that doesn’t appear to have shifted in years. Petrov and his friend Igor take a fantasy-fuelled journey through the city while his librarian ex-wife dispatches abusive men in her spare time as a crusading vigilante. There are many dazzling and mindboggling sequences in this crazy film. And as an example of pure punk rock cinema, it is akin to being waterboarded with Smirnoff. THE DUKE

Roger Michell’s warm take on the true story of how English eccentric Kempton Bunton acquired the National Gallery’s new Goya. It features a glorious performance by Jim Broadbent. A delightful true-crime caper told in flashback from Bunton’s trial where he stands accused of stealing a portrait of the Duke of Wellington by Goya from the National Gallery. Bunton has previously been jailed for not paying his TV licence and he is incensed that the gallery has just paid thousands for the Goya. Having stolen the painting, he ransoms it in return for free licences for the elderly. But there’s more at work than just a caper. It’s also the story of a marriage that’s been near-irrevocably damaged by the loss of a child. Nevertheless, Broadbent’s droll take on a modern Robin Hood is a comedic masterclass. Helen Mirren is a hoot as his long-suffering wife and director Roger Mitchell captures grimy 60s north-east Britain with aplomb. What a lovely, rousing, finally moving film this is. ‘The Duke’ is unashamedly sentimental and resolutely old-fashioned in the best sense of the term. 5 stars from The Telegraph and The Guardian. Working off a sharp script by Steven Knight, Chilean director Pablo Larraín spins the headlines and scandals into a full-blown Gothic nightmare, an opulent ice palace of a movie with shades of ‘Rebecca’ at the edges and a pleasing absurdity in its portrayal of the royals. If Kristen Stewart was a surprise choice for the role of Diana, it proves to be divine casting, rewarded with many Best Actress nominations. Terrific support from Timothy Spall and Sally Hawkins. SAVE THE CINEMA

Sara Sugarman’s latest film ‘Save The Cinema’ goes back to the 1990s and explores how the power of cinema can bring people together and keep communities alive. Inspired by the extraordinary real-life events sparked by tenacious hairdresser Liz Evans (Samantha Morton), a linchpin in her local community in the small town of Carmarthen. Her mission is to stop The Lyric Theatre from being demolished and turned into a shopping centre. Liz and her friends barricade themselves in the cinema, and with the help of postman turned local councillor Richard (Tom Felton), they come up with a grand plan. To revitalise the cinema and stop the council taking the heart of the community away, a desperate Liz persuades Richard to write to Hollywood to ask for a helping hand. One late night phone call later and one of Hollywood’s most legendary filmmakers throws The Lyric a monster-sized lifeline and a premiere Carmarthen will never forget. But will this be enough to save The Lyric? This is an unashamedly feel good film with a David vs Goliath theme that will warm hearts of all ages and restore your faith in what a community can achieve by coming together and resisting seemingly overwhelming odds. ARIADNE AUF NAXOS

MET OPERA The exhilarating soprano Lise Davidsen makes her ‘Live in HD’ debut in one of her signature roles, the mythological Greek heroine of Strauss’s enchanting masterpiece, with another partnership with Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Strauss’s operas cover a wide spectrum of styles, from tragic and heroic to comic and expansive to poignantly intimate. In this ingenious quasi–chamber opera, the composer hit on a formula that allowed him to express several aspects of operatic storytelling in a single work, especially in the latter half, an opera-within-anopera in which the practical flirtatiousness of the comedienne Zerbinetta contrasts with the grand sentiments of the title diva. The outstanding cast for this production also features mezzosoprano Isabel Leonard as the Composer of the opera-within-anopera around which the plot revolves, with soprano Brenda Rae as the spirited Zerbinetta and tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Ariadne’s lover, the god Bacchus, in this witty production by Elijah Moshinsky. Marek Janowski conducts. An opera in 2 Acts sung in German with English subtitles. THE GODFATHER

50TH ANNIVERSARY One of the greatest films in the history of cinema turns 50 years old, and gifts us with a 4K remaster. First released in 1972, ‘The Godfather’ follows the Corleone’s mob family, as the youngest son Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) goes from a reluctant outsider to the ruthless mob leader succeeding his father Don Vito (Marlon Brando). Based on Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel of the same name, Francis Ford Coppola’s film is cinematic perfection from its painterly cinematography and immaculate performances to its quotable dialogue and litany of memorable scenes. Despite his short screen time it is Brando who dominates the film with his understanding of stillness and silence as well as small gestures that communicate so much more than dialogue. A three-hour film that thunders by in a flash. USA 1972 FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA 175M SPECIAL OFFER

THE GODFATHER: PART II

The early life and career of Vito Corleone is juxtaposed with his son Michael tightening his grip on power. Oscars for Best Picture, Director and Actor. Robert DeNiro slips effortlessly into the shoes of young Vito as he begins to forge the beginnings of a mafia organisation. Al Pacino continues his expansion of the family business at the same discarding any last shreds of morality. Perhaps this contrast with his father’s reserves of dignity and kindness is what makes this sequel so powerful. Part II is particularly immersive – the intercutting between eras, a device that could have grated, is exquisitely realised. Each sequence of events bleeds into the next to form a masterpiece of vision and artistic courage that must be seen to be believed. USA 1974 FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA 202M 20 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

NINE DAYS

A man interviews five unborn souls to determine which one can be given life on Earth in this profound meditation on what it takes to live a meaningful life. ‘Nine Days’ concerns itself with unborn entities, all of whom are hoping to find passage into the world of the living. They will never remember their time in this strange-looking clapboard house filled with TV sets and shabby filing cabinets, a manse eerily sited in the middle of a desert expanse. Each soul is processed by celestial bureaucrat Will (Winston Duke) who, unlike his colleague Kyo (the ever welcome Benedict Wong), once actually lived on Earth before landing his current gig. At once restrained and brimming with emotion thanks to its story and phenomenal cast. USA 2020 EDSON ODA 124M 22

THE REAL CHARLIE CHAPLIN

SPECIAL EVENT

Miraculously restored archival materials lend ‘The Real Charlie Chaplin’ credibility and unique insight, casting a fair look at the entertainer that celebrates his genius while scrutinising his foibles. A charmer, a scoundrel, a sweetheart and a monster, not to mention a celebrity of scandalous appetites, Chaplin makes an extraordinary subject. ‘The Real Charlie Chaplin’, positions his Little Tramp alter ego as a shield and veil. If audiences were looking at the bowler hat, toothbrush moustache, and rubbery cane, they’d never see the man wearing them. This top-to-bottom bio-doc examines Chaplin as a once-in-a-generation funnyman, while recognising that as only one of the many roles he played in his eventful life: the Dickensian child labourer, the innovative vaudevillian, the big-hearted humanist, the vindictive lover, the Tinseltown captain of industry, the witch-hunted commie, the reclusive Swiss expat. CYRANO

Convinced that his physical appearance makes him unworthy of his beloved Roxanne, the chivalrous Cyrano dares not express his ardour directly. The classic story gets a 21st century MGM musical-style update from director Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna) with Peter Dinklage as Cyrano. Unencumbered by the traditional huge nose, this Cyrano is stifled in his pursuit of Roxanne by his diminutive stature. Instead, he arms another suitor Christian with the poetry to woo Roxanne. The bargain is, “I will make you eloquent, while you make me handsome.” This version is embellished with lovely wistful ballads while Wright’s swooping cameras and beyond-dazzling production design bring new meaning to the word ‘panache’. This classic tale of a twisted courtship has never been in safer hands. UK/USA 2021 JOE WRIGHT 124M

THE GODFATHER: CODA (PART III)

THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE The third act in the life of Michael Corleone who tries to go into respectable business by bailing out the Vatican’s financially embarrassed bank. The third film suffered on its initial release – not from the hands of the critics who mostly liked it – but from coming out three months after ‘Goodfellas’. Coppola has tinkered with ‘Coda’ introducing a new beginning and end as well as rearranging some other scenes. The upshot is a film that lingers in the mind thanks in great part to the new ending that condemns Michael to a ‘death’ in which he doesn’t die. Sophia Coppola’s performance still divides opinion, yet she embodies what a modern gangster’s daughter might be. ‘Coda’ truly does touch the grandeur of the first two films - even if it can’t match it. At 18, the high-spirited Lola (played with spitting fury by the wonderful young transgender performer, Mya Bollaers) lives in a foster home with her best friend Sami and is waiting on reassignment surgery. The news of her mother Catherine’s death brings Lola home to her transphobic father, Phillipe. Together, and with great reluctance, the warring father and daughter embark on a stormy road trip toward a beach house by the North Sea, where the family spent fractious holidays and where they hope to scatter Catherine’s ashes. In order to provide for her struggling family, she pulls together the other widows in her community to launch a business selling ajvar and honey. PERFORMANCE

GROSSE FREIHEIT Post-war Germany and Hans is repeatedly imprisoned for being homosexual. Sebastian Meise’s arresting drama offers a powerful reflection on historical injustice and the persecution of homosexuals, seen through the eyes of one man. Under the Nazis, the much-contested Paragraph 175 law of 1871 was invoked to justify the persecution and incarceration of homosexuals. Hans first comes to this prison from a concentration camp. After the war, the regime changed, but the notorious law remained in force until 1969. Over the course of decades, a primal bond grows between the initially revolted cellmate Viktor and Hans. It is a hard-hitting, often uncompromising piece of work, yet beneath its tough exterior lies a deeply unsentimental, disarmingly tender love story that is almost impossible to forget. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN

Maurice Flitcroft, a dreamer and unrelenting optimist, manages to gain entry to The British Open Golf Championship and subsequently shoots the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process. Flitcroft (Mark Rylance of ‘Bridge of Spies’ and ‘Wolf Hall’) is 46 years old and living with his wife Jean (Sally Hawkins) and their sons. He is also facing redundancy, after years of working as a shipyard crane-operator. By chance, he catches the end of the British Open, witnessing the triumph of Tom Watson. He decides to join his local golf club, and his innocence/ignorance allows him to exploit a loophole in the admissions process for the British Open. And shockingly - there he is, doing his humble strut on the world stage, smiling anxiously as his official (lack of) credentials are announced. FOCUS ON FILM

Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook embark on a forbidden affair in this charming and heartfelt drama from Clio Barnard. Ali’s marriage has disintegrated. His wife has outgrown him intellectually and he finds himself bonding with Ava over their shared affection for Sofia, the child of Ali’s Slovakian tenants, whom Ava teaches. There’s a tremendous human warmth to this love story from writer-director Clio Barnard, a social-realist tale that you might compare to Ken Loach’s ‘Ae Fond Kiss’. It’s a drama of autumnal love conquering the divisions of race, the disillusionments of middle age, the discomfort of parenthood and grandparenthood, and the tensions of class. This could have lurched into heavyhanded melodrama, instead we find something more nuanced, humane and lyrical. UK 2021 CLIO BARNARD 95M
