OUISTREHAM Juliette Binoche goes undercover in the gig economy to probe the injustices faced by low-paid workers. Originally screened at New Park as a preview with great success at the 2021 French Film Festival UK. Juliette Binoche stars as an author who, inspired by George Orwell’s ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’, goes undercover as a cleaning lady in the northern French port of Caen to research a book on job insecurity and social precariousness. Desperate applicants have to burnish their CVs with fatuous assurances about how passionate they are about cleaning, in return for dehumanising work with pitiful pay, grisly conditions and no job security. Although Binoche is the film’s star, her presence is smartly muted, allowing us time and space to discover the world as she does, and providing room for complexity in considering the ethics of his character’s work and of Carrère’s film itself. DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA
The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa. Fans will be delighted to know that all the main cast will be back for the Downton Abbey sequel, including Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, and Elizabeth McGovern. There’s a birth, a death, a proposal, and a spot of disputed paternity, with all loose ends tied as neatly as if Mr Carson himself had attended to them. There are also some genuine chuckles, and a few shamelessly derivative storylines, with especially firm nods to ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’.
