Former Carroll students skate to gold in Salt Lake City BY NATHAN BRUNNER Sports Editor Over the past couple of weeks the world has had its attention turned to Salt Lake City. WhoÕd have thought that a small school like Carroll would have some of its own bringing home gold. A week ago this past Tuesday, in Salt Lake City, former Carroll College student and American speedskater Casey FitzRandolph realized his lifelong dream. He won an Olympic gold medal. FitzRandolph won the 500 meters by just .03 of a second over Hiroyasu Shimizu of Japan. This gold more than makes up for his disappointing finish of 6th in the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan. FitzRandolph began attending Carroll in 1993 when he moved to Milwaukee to train at the Pettit National Ice Center. During his freshman year, he was also an all-conference kicker on the football team.

FitzRandolph attended Carroll until he moved to Calgary, Canada to train at the Olympic Oval in the city. FitzRandolph speaks fondly of his time spent at Carroll. A quote from his website, www.caseyfitz.com, reads, ÒThe people at Carroll College stepped up and offered me financial support and a place to call my own.Ó On the way to competing in the 500 meters, he also competed in the 1000 meter last Saturday. He finished in 7th place but was very upbeat. ÒI got a gold in my home country, nothing can match that,Ó he said. ÒI went out there today to have fun, give it a whirl and go for it.Ó While FitzRandolph may not have won a medal in the 1000, one of his teammates on the womenÕs side did. About a month ago, American speedskater and former Carroll student Chris Witty was diagnosed with mononucleosis. This sickness is devastating for a speedskater, who needs as See Speedskaters Page 15

ÔUncle MiltonÕ rally cancelled, but another one looms

The motivation behind the ÒUncle MiltonÓ letter will spurn another attempt to unite concerned students in a rally. As of last Friday, the organizers would not reveal the time or place for the next rally, but said that there

were students working on it. One organizer is Tom Lyons, student senator and president of College Republicans. ÒUncle Milton,Ó author of a letter that asked students who felt betrayed by administration to gather on Main Lawn and express their concerns, is junior, Craig Arrowood. He said the main purpose of the letter was to get discussion going between students and teachers. He planned to do this

through three means: 1. Have students not attend classes on Tuesday, February 12. 2. Have supportive faculty and staff wear green on this day. 3. Have students organize in front of Main Hall on the same day to Òprove to President Falcone and others our genuine concern about the state of the campus.Ó ÒUncle Milton,Ó who heard about plans for the future gathering, did

not want to split the efforts of those students who may attend either rally. That was part of the reason his call for students to unite was cancelled two days prior to the scheduled event. Another reason was lack of planning. The idea only originated a week prior to distribution of the letter. ÒMy theory was originally, if
