Former Vice President Joe Biden was selected as President Barack Obama’s running mate in the 2008 election, and then served as Obama’s vice president for two terms. Before that, he served as a U.S. Senator for Delaware and was first elected in 1972. Biden, 77, was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He would be the oldest president in U.S. history, if elected. Biden launched his presidential campaign in April 2019 after consistent speculation about his potential candidacy following his years as vice president. Though the campaign started off slow in the primaries, strong performances in South Carolina and the Super Tuesday primaries helped Biden secure the nomination.
Biden said he wants to offer free COVID-19 testing to all Americans, repeal President Donald Trump’s tax cuts, raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, expand Obamacare, reform policing, codify Roe v. Wade into federal law and invest in green energy. He teamed up with former rival U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and others to propose a plan to combat climate change and has proposed broad student loan forgiveness.
Sen. Kamala Harris, Biden’s running mate, has served as a U.S Senator for California since she was elected in 2016. She previously served as the attorney general of California and the district attorney of San Francisco. Harris, 55, was born in Oakland, California. She would be the first woman to serve as vice president, if elected. Harris was also the second Black woman and first South Asian American to serve in the U.S. Senate. In her time as a senator, she advocated for healthcare reform, descheduling cannabis at the federal level, increasing paths to citizenship for immigrants and an assault weapons ban. She has also expressed a desire to address our nation’s mental health crisis. Harris previously ran for president, but suspended her campaign in December 2019.
