I would like to begin by welcoming Ryan Lowe, his staff, players and everyone connected with Plymouth Argyle to Rodney Parade for this evening’s fixture.

After missing the last three games due to a positive Covid test, I’m excited to finally get back to Rodney Parade for the first time this season. I would like to thank Wayne and the rest of the coaching staff for stepping up over the last few games in my absence. It’s been difficult watching on iFollow over the last week, so I’m glad to finally get back on the touchline this evening. We’ve faced several long trips on the road at the start of the new campaign, but the players have coped with the travelling well and we’ve already registered some positive results on the board in the opening month of the season. We reached the final of this competition two seasons ago and we’ve used it to hand out a number of debuts to some of the younger players at the club over the last few years, so it’s a great opportunity for them to express themselves and show what they can do. Despite the result last week, I am sure you all enjoyed being back here in your numbers for the first in 17 months and we’re glad to finally have you supporting us back on home soil. August has been a good month for us given how much the squad has changed since last season and the new players that have come in, so hopefully we can finish on a high this evening. Enjoy the match. MICHAEL

Meet the Players & Staff of

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE BY PHIL TANNER

01 MICHAEL COOPER

02 JAMES BOLTON

GOALKEEPER

DEFENDER

Product of the Argyle academy who made his debut in 2017 at just 17 years of age as a sub for Kyle Letheren. Michael was a regular in the EFL Trophy and was instrumental in a run to the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup in 2017, when Argyle beat Manchester City and Burnley. He was ever present last season and was named Young Player of the Season and rewarded with a new long-term deal, running until 2024.

Summer signing from Portsmouth, where he spent two seasons and made 20 appearances across all competitions in 2020-21. Able to play at right back or centreback, James began his career at hometown club Stoke City before moving to Macclesfield Town in 2013. He helped Halifax Town win the FA Trophy in 2016, spent the next year with Gateshead and then moved back into the EFL with Shrewsbury Town.

03 MACAULAY GILLESPHEY

04 JORDAN HOUGHTON

DEFENDER

MIDFIELDER

Signed in the summer on a two-year deal from Australian side Brisbane Roar after helping them to fourth place in the ALeague last season. The left-sided defender played more than 50 times for the Queensland side and was a fans' favourite, winning their Player of the Year award in 2020. The former Newcastle United trainee has appeared against County previously when he was with Carlisle United.

Rejoined at the start of the season, five years after a loan at Argyle. Jordan first signed from Chelsea as a 20-year-old in 2016 and helped reach the League Two playoff final. He then spent two seasons on loan at Doncaster, where injury again curbed his progress but he helped win promotion. The England U20 cap then switched to MK Dons where he topped 100 games and achieved promotion in his first season.

05 JAMES WILSON

06 DAN SCARR

DEFENDER

DEFENDER

Not to be confused with his namesake, the striker who joined Port Vale from Salford this summer. James joined Argyle on a free transfer from Ipswich, where he had just won the Player of the Season award. Capped once by Wales, he began his career at Bristol City and went on to make a name for himself as a reliable and experienced EFL defender in spells at Oldham Athletic, Sheffield United and Lincoln City.

Joined the Pilgrims in the summer after turning down a new contract at Walsall, where he had spent two-and-a-half seasons and played alongside current Argyle captain Joe Edwards. Dan was picked up from Northern Premier League side Stourbridge by Birmingham City. He didn’t establish himself at St Andrews but helped Wycombe Wanderers to promotion to League One while on loan before joining the Saddlers.

07 RYAN BROOM

08 JOE EDWARDS

MIDFIELDER

DEFENDER

Newport lad on loan from Peterborough. Ryan came through the youth ranks at Bristol Rovers but was freed at the end of 2017–18 after a handful of games, also having time on loan at Taunton, Bath and Eastleigh. He then spent two seasons with Cheltenham Town and was Player of the Year in 2019-20. Peterborough paid a fee to sign him last summer but he ended the campaign on loan at Burton Albion.

Club captain who joined in the summer of 2019, Ryan Lowe’s first signing as manager. Joe can slot in equally well at right wingback or in a holding role in midfield and won the Player of the Season award last time out after popping up with nine goals in 48 matches. Before arriving at Home Park he played for Yeovil, Colchester and Walsall - while there he graduated in physiotherapy from the University of Salford.

09 RYAN HARDIE

10 DANNY MAYOR

STRIKER

MIDFIELDER

Scot whose return in January 2021 was welcomed by supporters. Two previous loan spells at Home Park from Blackpool saw Ryan score 10 in 33 matches as an integral part of Argyle’s League Two promotion side. He began his career at Rangers, making 17 appearances, and he scored consistently on loan at Raith, St Mirren and Livingston before joining Blackpool. Capped by Scotland at all age levels up to U21.

Playmaker signed in 2019, linking up with Ryan Lowe who played alongside and managed him at Bury. Danny began his career at Preston, where he won the Young Player of the Year award in 2012. He moved on to Sheffield Wednesday and had loan spells at Southend and Bury before making the switch to the latter permanent in 2014. There he was instrumental in promotion just before the club went under.

14 JORDON GARRICK

15 CONOR GRANT

MIDFIELDER

MIDFIELDER

Jamaica-born winger on a season-long loan from Swansea City. Jordon, 23, has made 19 appearances for the Swans in all competitions since joining them from Ossett Albion in the Northern Premier in 2015, having chosen football over rugby league. He spent the later stages of last season on loan at Swindon Town, where he scored twice in 14 games in League One but couldn't prevent their relegation.

Enjoyed his best season in an Argyle shirt in 2020-21 and was rewarded with a twoyear contract extension. Conor joined from Everton in summer 2018 but struggled with injuries in his first two seasons, playing just 37 matches. Last season he became a regular, grabbing 13 assists in League One and scoring some spectacular goals. Before joining Argyle he had loans at Motherwell, Doncaster, Ipswich and Crewe.

20 ADAM RANDELL

22 BRENDAN GALLOWAY

MIDFIELDER

DEFENDER

Local lad back in the fold after helping Torquay United to the National League playoff final last season, when he was Young Player of the Year at Plainmoor. Save for a one-game suspension Adam was ever- present in the league and clocked up 50 appearances overall. He made his Argyle debut as a second-year apprentice in an EFL Trophy loss to County in 2018 and signed an extension at Home Park in February.

Born in Zimbabwe and moved to England with his family when he was six. Brendan started playing for Milton Keynes Dons when he joined their U11 side. Everton signed him for an undisclosed fee on a five-year deal in 2014. He was capped by England at U21 and went on loan to West Brom and Sunderland. He spent the last two years at Luton but was badly hit by injuries and joined Argyle on a halfseason deal.

23 LUKE MCCORMICK

25 CALLUM BURTON

GOALKEEPER

GOALKEEPER

Beginning his 15th season as an Argyle player across three spells after signing a one-year extension in the summer. Sub appearances in the last two league matches last season took Luke to the milestone of 350 games for Argyle, placing him 19th in their all-time appearance list. He made his debut back in 2001 and has won three promotions, as well as one with Swindon when they won League Two in 2019-20.

Played 27 times and kept nine clean sheets as Cambridge won promotion from League Two last season. An England youth cap from Newport (Shropshire), Callum started his career with Shrewsbury and had loan spells with Market Drayton Town, Workington, Southport and Telford before two years with Hull City from July 2017. From there he made further temporary moves to Salford City and Chesterfield.

Meet the Players & Staff of

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE BY PHIL TANNER

27 RYAN LAW

28 PANUTCHE CAMARA

DEFENDER

MIDFIELDER

Attacking fullback who was one of six out-of-contract players to re-sign at the end of the 2020-21 season. Ryan ended the campaign in the starting XI, impressing in the final four matches after returning from eight games loan at Torquay in the National League. He made his debut in a 2-0 EFL Trophy defeat to County in 2018 and has also spent time on loan at Truro City, Gloucester City and Chippenham Town.

Midway through a two-year deal after signing from Crawley Town. Panutche played youth football in Portugal and for Barnsley before joining Crawley from Dulwich Hamlet. His first season at Home Park saw him become a favourite with supporters with five goals in 48 matches including two great strikes in the Pilgrims' run to the fourth round of the FA Cup. He was called up to by Guinea-Bissau in June.

31 LUKE JEPHCOTT

32 GEORGE COOPER

STRIKER

MIDFIELDER

Wales U21 cap who has made big strides since his recall from a loan at Truro City midway through 2019-20 and was top scorer last season with 18 in all competitions. Luke was born in Aberystwyth and moved to Cornwall aged five. He came through the academy and when he made his debut as a sub in 2018 he became the first player born in the 21st century to play for Argyle. Now contracted until summer 2023.

Had a frustrating 2020-21 League One campaign, missing much of the season with a knee injury. George had a very successful loan spell the season before, his 12 assists in 27 games on loan from Peterborough United convincing Argyle to sign him permanently for an undisclosed fee. He came through the renowned academy at Crewe Alexandra and played well over 100 games for Alex before joining the Posh.

36 FINLEY CRASKE

37 BRANDON PURSALL

DEFENDER

DEFENDER

Local lad from Ivybridge. Finley joined Argyle's academy at U9 level and signed a full-time apprenticeship in summer 2019. He made his senior debut last November as a second-half substitute in a 3–1 EFL Trophy win over County and his league debut, also off the bench, on the final day of the season. The current campaign has seen him again on the bench but at the time of writing yet to come on.

Another promising defender making his way through the youth programme. One of several Cornishmen in the squad, Brandon is another who joined Argyle's academy at U9. He represented East Cornwall Schools and is in the second year of a two-year scholarship. His debut came last season with three games in this competition, one off the bench followed by two starts including one against County.

41 OLIVER TOMLINSON

42 RHYS SHIRLEY

DEFENDER

STRIKER

One more youth team product pressing for a place in the EFL side. Ollie, who turned 19 in May, is another from Ivybridge. He joined the academy slightly later as a U13. Like for so many youngsters his first opportunity came in the EFL Trophy, in September 2020. A few days later he signed on loan for Southern League side Barnstaple Town. He then made his league debut near the end of the season.

With Covid-19 hindering development of players at academy level Rhys was one of three young prospects whose scholarships Argyle took up an option to extend for a further year, along with midfielder Finley Craske and defender Alfie Wotton. After featuring in several pre-season friendlies he made his debut off the bench in this season's opener, followed by further sub appearances in L1 and the EFL Cup.

In charge at Home Park since June 2019 when he left the promoted but financially doomed Bury, staying in League Two. Ryan's decision to move was further vindicated by Argyle securing automatic promotion in third place and returning to League One at the first attempt. They then finished 18th, six points clear of relegation. His stint at Bury earned him the League Two Manager of the Year award for 2018-19 after an outstanding season amid off-field turbulence with players going unpaid several times. He also won divisional Manager of the Month awards for November, January and February and took Bury to their best ever campaign in the Football League Trophy where they lost to Portsmouth in the semi-final.

The Liverpudlian was one of the lower leagues' most prolific scorers in recent years, with a return of 214 goals from just over 700 games in all competitions across almost two decades. He set a Bury record when he scored in each of nine consecutive league games in 2010-11. Beginning in Liverpool's youth programme, Ryan dropped into non-league with Burscough before stepping up into the EFL with Shrewsbury Town in 2000. He helped them return from the Conference at the first attempt and went on to play for eight league clubs in all, including three spells at both Crewe and Bury and time with Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Tranmere Rovers. He retired at the end of 201718 when not far short of 40 after his third spell with Bury where he twice won promotion from League Two, in 2010-11 and 2014-15.
