STADIUM ADDRESS NEWPORT COUNTY AFC RODNEY PARADE RODNEY ROAD, NP19 0UU
After six away games and some long trips at the start of the new season, it’s good to be at Rodney Parade for two games this week. It gives us the chance to build on a strong start to the season and two solid points against Leyton Orient and Harrogate. We’ve played five away games already in the league and we‘ve achieved five points more than we did against the same sides last season, so it shows we’re making progress in the early stages of the season. We’re still a work in progress given the number of new players we brought in during the summer window, but I’ve got an honest group and they’ve gelled together well over the last few months. After a difficult few weeks with Covid and some of the players missing out against Leyton Orient, the majority have now returned and they are itching to get back in the matchday squad. It’s a good selection headache for me to have as a manager and now it’s up to the players to show why they should be out on the pitch. Northampton will be looking for an instant return to League One this season but they’ll be aware of how difficult it is to achieve that with the quality of some of the teams in this division. We need to make sure we cut out some of the sloppy goals that we’ve conceded in the last few games or teams will continue to punish us. Make plenty of noise and enjoy the match.

FOAK BY DYLAN SCARBOROUGH
Tristan Abrahams
Starting his career with Leyton Orient, Tristan Abrahams was signed by Championship club Norwich City after breaking into the O’s first team at the age of 17. Following his release from the Norfolk side in 2019, Abrahams penned a deal with the Exiles where he netted 18 goals in 74 appearances in two seasons. The forward later returned to where it all started halfway through the 2020/21 season when he joined the O’s on loan but failed to find the net in 14 appearances. The 22-year-old now resides in Cumbria where he plays up top for Carlisle United.
Jamie Turley
After making only seven appearances due to a lengthy injury, Jamie Turley left the Exiles after the 2016/17 season and had spells with Boreham Wood and Notts County before spending three seasons with Leyton Orient. The centre-back netted his only County goal against the O’s at Brisbane Road in a 1-0 away win for Warren Feeney’s men in August 2016. Turley was a part of the Orient side who gained promotion back to the EFL under the management of the late Justin Edinburgh. He made 14 appearances under Edinburgh and a further 33 in all competitions in the following two seasons.
Lamar Reynolds
Lamar Reynolds worked his way up through the leagues and soon joined the V9 academy, a programme set up by Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy to showcase players from non-league to scouts. After impressing during his time there, Reynolds joined the Exiles in August 2017 and made 10 appearances before joining Leyton Orient on loan in January 2018 in the National League. The forward continued his career in the National League when he left the Exiles for Dagenham & Redbridge in 2018 before dropping a level into the National League South where he now plays for Concord Rangers.
Dale Gorman
Starting his career in the Republic of Ireland with Letterkenny Rovers, Dale Gorman moved to England to begin his EFL journey with Stevenage. After spending three seasons with the Hertfordshire side, Gorman joined Justin Edinburgh’s Leyton Orient ahead of their 2018/19 National League title winning campaign. The Irishman made 17 appearances the following season before joining the Exiles on loan in 2020 and netted one goal during his time at Rodney Parade - a 69th minute winner against Morecambe in March 2020. Gorman joined Northern Irish side Glentoran in September 2020 and made 26 appearances before returning to the National League to join Yeovil Town in July 2021 for an undisclosed fee.

View from the
boardroom A warm welcome to all the directors, players and officials of Northampton Town for tonight’s home fixture. A special thank you to Northampton’s Chairman Kelvin Thomas and Chief Executive James Whiting who were most helpful in agreeing for the game to be re-arranged. We are still emerging out of Covid, and this was very apparent to the club when a number of players tested positive and a number of others were unsurprisingly identified as close contacts. It highlights the ongoing debate amongst the playing community about being vaccinated. You may have read in the media that there are large numbers who have made the decision not to take the vaccination. EFL along with other stakeholders have been in dialogue on this issue and the captains of all EFL teams are soon to be addressed by UK Government’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Jonathan Van Tam, who will outline the benefits and importance of being vaccinated. We, of course, recognise that it is the personal choice of an individual to make that decision. It will be interesting to see how this debate develops, especially as there are clear protocols in place for those who contract the virus and those who are close contacts. Our medical team will continue to support the players as they have done throughout. On the ‘emerging out of Covid theme’ there are still things that are not quite back to how they were
pre-covid at the ground. The marquee that hosts our pre-match experience is having a new floor laid and some of our other match ay experiences are yet to commence because of the existing protocols. We are hopeful that these things will slowly get back to a sense of normality. In the meantime, we are grateful for everyone’s continued support and patience. Congratulations to several of our younger players who recently represented both the national side and the club. Firstly, Aneurin Livermore who made his league debut after coming on against Leyton Orient, hot on the heels of his appearances in both the Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy. Lewys Twamley, Jack Karadogan and Sonny Lewis all represented Wales in their respective age groups in the recent international window too. In addition, those that attended the Plymouth Papa John’s Trophy game would have seen a number of academy players represent the club in really enjoyable match. It is really pleasing to see the younger players coming through the ranks and being given an opportunity. Finally, our thanks to the lads from Goldie Lookin’ Chain and Neal Heard who were instrumental in the launch of our third shirt. It has, as expected, divided opinion. Good luck to the lads this evening. Gavin

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler
It was in fact St David’s Day when the O’s travelled west along the M4 to play out a fixture against an ailing Newport County (Mk1), but the old Ironsides still had enough in the tank to take a gutsy point in a scoreless draw. The ‘Amberscene’ issue which we will be perusing had a cover price of 50p and shows defender and parttime striker Paul Williams nodding home during a recent home defeat to Hartlepool; sadly, we learn his effort was disallowed as we delve into this 16-page issue. The Leslie “Dirty Den” Granthamlookalike manager, Brian Eastick, opens the production on page three by stating that its “Never over ‘til it’s over;” but, even by Hollywood standards, Eastick and the club were looking at finding a loavesand-fishes miracle from somewhere, and sadly, in The Barclays League Division Four of 1988 such happenings were in rather short supply. Mr. Eastick, who went on to coach in various England age group set-ups also noted that the 4-2 Hartlepool defeat wasn’t just down to bad luck, like some supporters had told him, but also down to “Bad play.” Brian puts two of Pool’s goals down to Paul Williams’ errors, but
as he points out on the credit side, the Northern Irishman also scored with two “Excellent” headed efforts. Going back to that cover picture, Brian notes … “I saw nothing wrong with his disallowed goal” … but adds … “This illustrates the Jekyll and Hyde nature of his performance.” In Ray Taylor ’s ‘ I n s i d e S o m e r to n’ feature, it’s noted that Paul is now our top scorer on a heady three goals, and Ray also mentions that even the Hartlepool defenders … “Would not have had any complaints if the goal had been allowed.” Alas, it wasn’t, no hat-trick was to be had, and the defeat became just another nail in the coffin with relegation to the GM Vauxhall Conference heading towards

Gwent at an alarming rate. Ray also recalls that the last time we had met Orient was in the Freight Rover Trophy where our winning spot-kick at Leyton Stadium in the semi-final shootout was in fact booted home by our popular ‘keeper, the late, great Mark Kendall. Hot on its heels is ‘Commercial Scene’ where we learn that a V. Morgan of Newport was a grand better off, being the lucky winner of a recent lottery draw that was then managed by Mrs. Ann Pring, and that the evening’s match ball sponsor was Mr. Fred Wangler, the well-known Chepstow Road optician and supporter. As we turn the page, we discover all things Orient and many names stand the test of time (or my memory anyway!) here. Included in their squad were former Southampton goalkeeper Peter Wells, ex-Chelsea defender John Sitton, club captain was Kevin Hales - another former resident of Stamford Bridge while other well-known players to lower-league fans were Steve Ketteridge, Kevin Godfrey, Ian Juryeff and Kevin Nugent. A quick glance back to their previous Somerton Park visit was had, this saw a home win by two goals to nil; both goals (including one penalty) were scored by Linden Jones, past Gwent resident, the Newport-born Rhys Wilmott who was then on loan at the O’s from Arsenal. The East London side were in an impressive third spot at kick-off with 54 points from 33 matches, with terminal County needing several snookers, rooted bottom in 24th spot with a paltry 20 points from 32 fixtures. Another startling stat bears down on me here, namely that Orient had knocked home 67 goals thus far compared to our woeful 28. We enter the second half of the issue with ‘4 Sight’ where Wallace Brown gives the eager fan a round-
up of recent events in the bottom tier. I’m afraid it’s not great news there either, as Wallace reports that Rochdale’s 3-1 home win over Hereford had pulled them further away from us; the gap at the time was 11 points, and, as if to dampen the prospects even further, we find that our Leyton visitors’ last-butone outing was a thumping 4-1 home win over our near neighbours Cardiff City. In ‘Supporter Club News’ a fair chunk is given over to a letter written by former director George Thorneycroft, whose explanation as to why he wasn’t going to rejoin the clubs board went public via naughty South Wales Argus reporter Ian Kelly, after George had told him and South Wales Echo reporter Rob Phillips (now of Radio Wales) in confidence and requested his reasons not be recorded. Mr. Thorneycroft does note that Rob did indeed respect his wishes and didn’t report his reasons in his publication. Well batted, Rob! George goes onto say he was always available to offer any help or advice he could give to the club. In Amanda Bolt’s ‘Amber Angle’ she looks at the gaffer Brian Eastick, who later that March was relieved of his duties. She pulls no punches in writing … “When Mr. Eastick was finally named County manager; most supporters were heard to comment … Who is Brian Eastick?” Even more so, when the likes of Lew Chatterley and Lawrie McMenemy had been names touted around in the press beforehand. However, Brian tells Amanda of his career to date where the former goalie had coached under Dave Sexton at QPR, then spells had followed at Chelsea, Brighton, as well as a stint in Kuwait, before returning home to London where he ended up at The Valley with Charlton, working under Lenny Lawrence; no stranger himself to Rodney Parade & Newport County of course! In ‘Look Back in Amber,’ a much happier time is covered with our
thumping 5-1 victory at Brisbane Road in October 1982, where a Tommy Tynan double, plus goals from Steve Lowndes, John Aldridge and Karl Elsey gave us a fine day out in the capital. I was one of the 2,040 present that day too. For the record, the O’s consolation was netted by Barry Silkman, who later became a well-known football agent. So, as previously mentioned, we ground out a decent point against an Orient side in front of 1,656 diehards. The O’s then crashed and burned a tad towards the end of the season, ending up in disappointing 8th position. Mind you, even 18th was a pipedream for a beleaguered County whose weary, soon-to-becorpse dropped out of the league come May. Teams: County: David Coles, Simeon Hodson, Steve Sherlock, Darren Carr, Paul Williams, Lawrence Osbourne, Richard Jones, Roger Gibbins, Gary Brook, Adrian Mann, Paul Bodin. Subs: Andy Thackeray, Glynne Millett. Orient (printed XI): Peter Wells, Terry Howard, Kevin Dickenson, John Sitton, Keith Day, Kevin Hales, Steve Ketteridge, Steve Castle, Alan Hull, Ian Juryeff, Alan Comfort. MATCHREPORT Harrogate
Newport County AFC battled to a hard-earned draw against early pacesetters Harrogate Town with a 2-2 draw at the EnviroVent Stadium. The Exiles shipped a goal after 38 seconds in their last away league outing against Salford City but got off to a flyer when Scot Bennett put them in front early on. Jack Muldoon got the home side back on level terms when he latched on to a goal-kick and fired home with a goal which County would’ve been disappointed to concede. An eventful ending to the first half then saw Robbie Willmott’s header restore the Exiles’ lead before Luke Armstrong levelled things up before the half-time interval as the spoils were shared in North Yorkshire. Michael Flynn made one change from the Exiles’ 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient, with Priestley Farquharson replacing Timmy Abraham in the starting line up. County made a dream start inside the opening three minutes after a succession of throw-ins from Cameron Norman eventually resulted in a corner to the visitors. George Thomson could only flick Willmott’s delivery into the centre of the box towards Bennett, who guided the ball beyond Mark Oxley with a calm finish on his weaker foot. Norman’s long throw helped County earn a share of the spoils late on against Orient six days earlier and they caused some early problems for the home side in North Yorkshire. Ollie Cooper was one of the beneficiaries as he got on the end of another throw which was launched into the box, but the midfielder’s overhead kick sailed just past the post and behind for goal-kick. Joe Day had to be on hand down the opposite end when Thomson’s cross found Warren Burrell, who saw his header gathered by the Exiles goalkeeper. Alex Pattison then went close less than 60 seconds later as he cut inside on his right foot and curled an effort just over the crossbar. The visitors had Day to thank for keeping their lead intact on the half-hour mark after Jack Diamond’s low cross was diverted goal bound by Muldoon, only for the goalkeeper to react quickly and expertly prevent the ball from finding the bottom corner. But Harrogate hit back three minutes later through a 2 2 | O F F I C I A L M ATC H DAY P R O G R A M M E
routine goal-kick from Oxley which flew through the air and found its way to Muldoon, who rifled the ball beyond Day with a first-time effort. County responded four minutes after the restart when Willmott found space in the Harrogate penalty area and nodded Norman’s cross into the far left corner beyond the reach of Oxley. It looked as though the Exiles would head into the half-time interval with the lead but they were pegged back for the second time two minutes before the break. Muldoon, again causing problems for the away side after his opener, saw his effort kept out by a strong hand by Day before Armstrong made no mistake in firing home the rebound. Finn Azaz was introduced at the break in place of Matty Dolan and combined well with Willmott and Alex Fisher to create the Exiles’ first opportunity after the break, but the Aston Villa loanee’s effort failed to force a save out of Oxley. Diamond’s low cross almost led to the home side taking the lead for the first time after forcing a save out of Day before Muldoon struck the side netting from a tight angle. Fisher then found a pocket of space from 35 yards and unleashed a powerful effort towards goal which was kept out by a strong hand from Oxley. Harrogate had the opportunity to test Day with five minutes left of normal time when Mickey Demetriou was shown a yellow card for a challenge on Simon Power just outside the box. Lewis Page stepped up to take the free-kick and saw his delivery diverted over the crossbar by substitute Danilo Orsi as both sides chalked up a point. Newport County AFC: Joe Day, Ryan Haynes, Mickey Demetriou, Matty Dolan (C) (Finn Azaz 45’), Priestley Farquharson, Cameron Norman (Aaron Lewis 77’), Ed Upson, Scot Bennett, Ollie Cooper, Robbie Willmott, Alex Fisher (Timmy Abraham 84’). Subs not used: Nick Townsend, James Clarke, Jake Cain, Dom Telford.

WELCOME
NORTHAMPTON TOWN by Richard Taylor WELCOME …
It is a warm welcome for this evening’s visitors NORTHAMPTON TOWN, who have become the lower leagues’ ‘yo-yo team’ with two promotions and two relegations in the past six seasons. ‘Cobblers’ fans will be hoping to make that seven next spring and early indications suggest that Jon Brady’s side will be challenging at the top end of the League Two table this term.

Oval v Round Cobblers arrived on the footballing scene thanks to the efforts of a group of school teachers from the Northampton & District Elementary Schools’ Association, who met with local solicitor AJ ‘Pat’ Darnell at the town’s Princess Royal Inn to form Northampton’s first professional football club. The move did not meet with the approval of the rugby club, who objected to the proposed title of ‘Northampton Football Club’, with the result that the ‘Town’ suffix was added. Northampton St James, now of course Northampton Saints of the English Premiership, have since competed with Town for local support and in 2019-20 enjoyed an average attendance of just under 9000, compared to Cobblers 5101.

Like our previous visitors Leyton Orient, Northampton have ‘enjoyed’ one season in English football’s top tier, finishing three points from safety in 21st position in 1965-66. Manager Dave Bowen combined his job with that of running the Wales team, and Cobblers side included the likes of Theo Foley, top scorer Bobby Brown and current associate director Graham Carr, father of comedian Alan. Northampton’s achievement in reaching the top flight was even more remarkable considering that they started the decade in Division 4. It may appear a ‘lowlight’ rather than a ‘highlight’, but Manchester United’s 8-2 FA Cup Round 5 demolition of Town at their former County Ground home in 1970 has entered footballing folklore, thanks mainly to the achievements of a certain George Best, who famously bagged six goals and received the match ball signed by all home players. Northampton celebrated their centenary season in 1996-97 with a first-ever appearance at Wembley, and Ian Atkins’ side ensured that the wait was worthwhile, as John Frain’s injury time winner from a twice-taken free kick in the play-off final against Swansea City ensured a return to the third tier. A year later, our visitors reached
W W W. N E W P O RT- CO U N T Y.CO. U K the Division 2 play-off final, losing 1-0 to Grimsby Town in front of a then record 62,998 attendance, with over 40,000 from Town. The 1932-33 season saw Cobblers create history as brothers Albert and Fred Dawes both scored in an 8-0 victory over … Newport County!
DON’T MENTION •
Following their sole season in the top division of English football, Town were relegated back to the Fourth Division over the next five years, playing in the bottom tier again in 1969-70.
•
AFC Bournemouth, or Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic as the current Championship side were known prior to 1971. Following a reserve match against Cherries’ second string in December 1929, a fire starting in the away dressing room subsequently destroyed three stands at the County Ground, causing damage in excess of £5000. Ten years later, Town’s third and final match of the abandoned 1939-40 Division 3 (South) campaign resulted in a record 10-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Dean Court.
•
The 1993-94 campaign, as Northampton finished bottom of the Football League pile for the only time in their history. However, they were spared a spell in the Conference, as champions Kidderminster Harriers’ Aggborough home did not meet necessary ground criteria.
COBBLERS TODAY
Positive Start Northampton travelled to Forest Green Rovers three days ago with an encouraging 10 points from their opening five League Two games. A week earlier, our visitors despatched Scunthorpe United 2-0 at Sixfields, though The Iron played 70 minutes with 10 men following the early dismissal of Emmanuel Onariase. Former Mansfield Town striker Danny Rose and Sam Hoskins broke stubborn Scunny resistance with goals in the second half, though visiting boss Neil Cox had no complaints: ‘I thought it was a definite red card. The ball goes over Manny’s head, he does not react quickly enough, and their lad is through on goal. He tried to make a challenge, but the lad goes down and it is a definite sending off. We wanted to be braver in possession in the second-half and try and play through the thirds but then we concede a goal on the counter-attack which we should not be doing away from home.’
MANAGER’S VIEW
‘It is now 10 points from five games which is a solid start to the season. There are currently areas all over the pitch where we can improve, and it is now about working with our players and what we can do. With the staff we have here - me, Colin (Calderwood), Marc (Richards) and James (Alger) - we believe in ourselves and our ability to improve individuals. ’I believe we have players within the group who are hungry to improve themselves, so our next challenge is to look within the group and make ourselves better and that is what we have to do. Only after that can we assess and see if we need anything to bolster us.’ Jon Brady speaking to ‘The Northampton Chronicle & Echo’.
FANS’ VIEWS
Talking to ‘FourFourTwo’ magazine, Town fan Peter Checkley was expecting his side to finish just outside the play-off places, commenting: ‘Last season was a frustrating and arduous trudge to relegation. It cannot really get any worse, can it? Some of the new additions look like they will help us progress in the longer term rather than being one season fixes. Look out for Max Dyche, son
of (Burnley manager) Sean and a centre back. He has signed a pro contract and looks like he could be an excellent player. Our key player will be Sam Hoskins. His presence will provide continuity and I expect him to step up his scoring rate too.’ ‘The biggest positive is how solid we are looking at the back and how disciplined we are when defending across the pitch. There is always one player within six yards of another ready to support. It is a good foundation to build on. Clearly, we lack flair and creativity in the final third, but I think we have sacrificed that for solidity at the moment.’ ‘Boot and Shoe’ in happy mood on ‘The Hotel End’ forum.
THE COUNTY CONNECTION
This evening is the 95th competitive fixture between County and Cobblers, with the visitors leading the series 48-31 in terms of victories. The clubs first clashed on Christmas Day 1919 in the Southern League First Division at Somerton Park, with the home side wetting the turkey appetite for the vast majority of the 5671 crowd with a 3-0 victory. Jackie Mann with a brace and Billy Gaughan were on target, but perhaps they and their colleagues overdid the festive celebrations, as a day later Northampton gained emphatic revenge with a 5-1 triumph at the County Ground. Both clubs were members of the new Third Division a year later and the inaugural Division 3 (South) in 1921-22. Indeed, apart from County’s Southern League (West) season in 1931-32 and Division 2 sojourn in 1946-47, the clubs clashed every season until 1958 and the creation of the national Third and Fourth Divisions. Newport boasted 5-2 and 5-1 home wins in 1930-31 and 1935-36 respectively, but these paled into insignificance alongside Northampton’s 7-0 and 8-0 routs in 1928-29 and 1932-33. Town’s hard-fought 1-0 victory at Newport in the opening match of the 1970-71 season left home supporters in the 4515 crowd frustrated, but confident that better times lay ahead. Their hopes seemed justified three days later, as Willie Brown and George Young goals earned a 2-1 League Cup triumph over Third Division Reading. However, County would have to wait until 15 January to taste victory again, 3-0 against Southend United, in their 26th Division 4 encounter! Since County’s return to the Football League in 2013, Cobblers have maintained their dominance with six wins to Newport’s two in nine games played. Northampton’s 1-0 victory at Sixfields in March 2019, courtesy of an 88th minute Joe Powell goal, looked to have quashed County play-off ambitions, though it sparked an unbeaten run that only ended in last minute heartache at Wembley against Tranmere Rovers. Undeterred, Newport remained unbeaten for the opening seven games of the 2019-20 season, until Town once more spoilt the party, as Andy Williams and Sam Hoskins struck to earn a 2-0 victory. JON BRADY MANAGER
Had a busy summer as the Cobblers responded to relegation from League One by bringing in 12 new players under the supervision of head of recruitment Martin Foyle. Jon was born in Newcastle, Australia and played youth football there before coming to the UK as a teenager and playing for Brentford, Swansea and Wycombe but without making their first teams. Dropping into non-league, he played for Hayes (before their merger with Yeading), Rushden & Diamonds, Woking, Chester City, Stevenage and Hereford. He was part of the Rushden squad that won the Conference title in 2000-01, scoring the winner on the final day of the season to make promotion mathematically certain. In his coaching career, Jon managed Brackley Town between 2009 and 2015, winning seven trophies and breaking numerous records as the longest-serving and most successful manager in their history. Leaving in September 2015, he missed County’s November encounter with Brackley in the FA Cup which went to a replay at Rodney Parade. Jon joined the Cobblers as U16 coach in 2016 and was promoted to the U18s the following year. He became caretaker manager, supported by Ian Sampson and Marc Richards, in February 2021 - succeeding Keith Curle but too late to stave off relegation before being appointed manager in May.

Further promotion followed with Forest and his later career included a spell managing Hibernian and coaching roles at Newcastle, Norwich and Brighton. His playing honours in a 600-game career as a defender included four promotions with Swindon Town and 36 caps for Scotland.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
