I would like to begin by welcoming Matthew Taylor, his staff, players and everyone connected with Walsall to Rodney Parade for this afternoon’s fixture.

We are heading into this game after a disappointing defeat against Northampton in midweek. It was even more frustrating because the players know they can perform far better than they did and they are all clear on the style of play that we want to play. We made too many mistakes and didn’t ask enough of Northampton who only created a few opportunities themselves. As I said after the game, I will take the blame because the buck stops with the manager, so I will take it on the chin and learn from it going forward. But I’m expecting to see a response this afternoon because we’ve given away too many goals in the last few games and teams have punished us. We had to freshen things up with the amount of travelling we’ve done and we were forced into a few changes because some players were missing too. Matters were made worse after the injury to Scot Bennett but hopefully he isn’t sidelined for too long because he’s an important player for us and someone I can always rely on.

STADIUM ADDRESS

Similarly to us, Walsall have had a busy summer with the new additions to their squad and they’ve enjoyed good results against Bradford and Mansfield in their last two games. I’m sure Matty has learned a lot over the last few months during his time in charge.

Hopefully we can put Tuesday behind us and get back on track this afternoon.

FOAK BY DYLAN SCARBOROUGH

Joss Labadie

Former Exile Joss Labadie captained Newport County AFC to both Sky Bet League Two play-off finals against Tranmere Rovers and Morecambe in 2019 and 2021 respectively. Labadie made the move to south Wales in 2016 and began his Newport journey under Warren Feeney and was part of the ‘Great Escape’ side who survived relegation to the National League on the final day of the 2016/17 season. After 146 appearances and 18 goals for the Exiles across five seasons, the midfielder made the move closer to his hometown with Walsall in the summer window where he has featured in five games for the Saddlers, picking up one red card in the process.

Emmanuel Osadebe

Emmanuel Osadebe joined the Exiles on loan during the 2017/18 season from Cambridge United where he made only three appearances before returning to his parent club in March. The midfielder soon went on to join Macclesfield Town, where he scored against the Exiles in a 1-1 draw at Moss Rose, then Walsall in 2020 where he will be looking to add to his 48 appearances for the Saddlers against the Exiles this evening.

George Nurse

Former Bristol City loanee George Nurse netted his first EFL goal with the Exiles when he scored a longrange 90th-minute screamer against Carlisle United in a 1-0 win. Nurse went on to make 26 appearances in all competitions under Michael Flynn during the 2019/20 season before returning to his parent club. The full-back then joined Walsall on loan in August 2020 until the remainder of the season - he racked up 13 appearances scoring one goal and grabbing two assists in the process. After being released by Bristol City in the summer, the 22-year-old signed permanently for League One side Shrewsbury Town.

Cameron Pring

Another Bristol City full-back on the list as Cameron Pring linked up with the Exiles in August 2018 on loan from the Robins. The youngster netted his first senior goal in a 2-0 win against Colchester United at Rodney Parade in November 2018 and made a total of 11 appearances before returning to his parent club in January 2019. Walsall were soon in for the defender as they snapped him up on loan ahead of the 2019/20 campaign and he made 24 appearances in all competitions before signing on loan with League One side Portsmouth the following season. Pring finally made his Bristol City debut this season in a Carabao Cup tie against Forest Green Rovers and has now made four Championship appearances with the Robins.

View from the

boardroom A warm welcome to all the directors, players and officials of Walsall FC for this afternoon’s fixture. For many fans of a certain age, playing Walsall brings back great memories of our promotion season back in the 80s where we sealed victory on the last day to achieve promotion. The drive up from Newport that day still lives with me as I recall counting more than 70 coaches from Sunderland on their way to play Cardiff. We are delighted to have Neil Bailey and Steve Lowndes as guest speakers in hospitality today, names synonymous with that period. I had the pleasure of attending an introductory Zoom meeting this week with our new partner Beyond the White Line - a not-for-profit organisation offering several support services with a focus on well-being within a sporting environment. They will be running several workshop sessions throughout the club, starting with the academy coaches. We are grateful to James Chiffi the CEO for his support and look forward to developing a successful relationship. I recently wrote about things not quite being back to normal as we emerge out of Covid, and

this was apparent in the meeting our general manager and I had with colleagues from Hummel this week. Supporters will be aware that home and away shirts have not been available for some time because of supply chain challenges linked to Covid. I was pleased to hear that these issues are nearing conclusion and we should see stock replenished in the shop and online store shortly and at the latest the end of the month. Keep an eye out on our social media channels! Our academy manager Damien Broad has been working closely with ex-player David Pipe with a view of supporting academy players of all ages. This will now be a feature of their training schedule and it’s great to have Pipey involved with the youth. We have a special guest with us today. John Sharpe has been a volunteer at the club for many years and he has decided to call it a day. Our thanks to John for all his hard work over the years. He is joined by his wife as a guest of the directors. We hope you both enjoy the game. Good luck to the lads this afternoon. Gavin

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler

A repeat result of our 1983/84 clash with today’s visitors Walsall would certainly be welcomed by home supporters here at Rodney Parade, so let us once again dust down an old programme and turn its pages ….

It was Sunday 22nd of January 1984 and a certain young striker by the name of John Aldridge was on fire; before this match, “Ollie” had banged home 12 goals in 10 league and cup matches for us. He poached another two against the Saddlers as well in our 3-1 win, so little wonder that within six short weeks John was sold for a paltry £70,000 to Robert Maxwell’s upwardly mobile Oxford United. You can insert your own line here about sell on clauses & daylight robbery, but please do mind your language! Moving swiftly along, our 20page, 30p priced ‘Amber Note’ was a great little read and opens with ‘Colin Addison’s View.’ As ever, the pragmatic Colin was upbeat in praising the younger players used in the midweek victory over Wrexham-based Lex XI in a Welsh Cup tie. Addo notes the … “Useful performances from Mike Pratt, Ceri Williams and Chris Lilygreen, the latter of which scored on his full debut in the side.” All three of these young Ironsides’ players would go onto star for the fledgling Exiles in the early 1990s too, with goals aplenty for Ceri and Chris, whilst Mike is still a very valued member of the County in the Community

team today, doing sterling work with youngsters in Newport and beyond. News of a few loans was given out with Neville Chamberlain heading back to Stoke City the day after this game (Although he would return permanently the following season) and Kenny Stroud, who was currently being loaned out at Bristol City. Classy Kenny was another who became an Exile some years later, albeit sadly all too briefly. It appears he was dragging his heels for a permanent move to the Ashton Gate outfit, but he did indeed move there a week or so later. Pushing on to pages four and five and Richard Shephard’s ‘Inside Somerton’ feature was awash with its usual little snippets of fascination; it’s noted that five

youth teamers had recently been training with the national squad. They were, in addition to Ceri and Mike, Messrs Shaun Mather, Richard Morse and goalkeeper Neil Welsh. Information is also given about the launch of the Football League’s Associate Members Cup competition, now under the guise of The Papa John’s Trophy of course, while a welcome is given to newcomer John Leyton, a former Hereford United defender who had left Trowbridge to join us in a defensive emergency. There is also a piece on 1938/39 full back Jack Webb who had recently passed away. In ‘Look Back in Amber,’ Richard indeed looked back at a few Co u n t y / Wa l sa l l c l a sh es of yesteryear and in particular our fine 4-2 win over the Midlands club on Easter Friday in 1952. Beriah Moore helped himself to a treble that day with George Beattie also netting. The centre pages are where we find all we ever needed to know about our Saddler friends and ahead of play, they sat proudly top of the pile in the league table, one point ahead of pesky Oxford and three ahead of Hull. Old foe Alan Buckley was in charge and had a decent squad at his disposal. Many names will linger in older fans memories including former West Bromwich Albion pair Ally Brown and Kevin Summerfield, as well as Mark Rees, Ian Handysides, Craig Shakespeare and Kenny Mower. Bettws boy Chris Lilygreen was the focus of ‘Amber Angle’ and just a year and a half prior we learn he was an … “Unknown youngster with Newport YMCA in the Gwent Sunday Youth League.” Then just 18-years old, Chris was introduced to the club by scout Jimmy Jenkins and scored against Cwmbran Town Youth on his County debut. He ended the previous season with 22 goals playing in a wide attacking role, similar to the role

(it’s mentioned) Wales cap Steve Lowndes had performed for us before departing for Millwall the previous summer. Chris had already made two substitute appearances for the first XI and remembers coming off the bench at Oxford the previous November … “I was only on for twenty minutes, but I was equally as tired at the end of it as I am at the end of a full reserve game.” Lils also goes onto mention the benefit he was getting from fulltime training and working out at the club gym. In ‘Dateline 3’ we had news from around our peer clubs and here we discover that AFC Bournemouth had crashed back down to earth, following their famous defeat of Manchester United in the FA Cup, with a 2-0 loss at Preston, while in other news Wimbledon’s Alan Cork was another striker in the goals with nine in his last seven matches. More signs of Maxwell’s dubiously acquired wealth evident here, also, as it’s reported the Manor Ground outfit had signed Chelsea winger Peter Rhodes-Brown for £75,000. Looking at the wonderful pair of stats pages towards the back end of the programme, it’s of no surprise to find Mr Aldridge leading scorer with an impressive 24 goals in all competitions. Sadly, next to him on that list was Nigel Vaughan on five, and he’d left the club for Cardiff City in the September! As ever, the youth team were scoring plenty, especially in the Gwent Youth League, including earlier season massacres over Abergavenny 12-0 and Cwmbran Celtic by just one goal fewer. However, the boys didn’t get it all their own way with defeats in other competitions to Cardiff City and Torquay United. Onto the afternoon’s fayre itself, and a crowd of 4,374, including a fair few

from the West Midlands, made their way to Somerton and saw a very entertaining match in which a rampant County turned a 0-1 interval deficit into a thrilling 3-1 success. Nev Chamberlain got our other goal and Walsall nosedived thereafter in the spring to finish in 6th spot. County were in 13th which too was something of a disappointment after our 4th place finish the season before; but nevertheless, expected in many ways as the financial dark clouds had started to form very heavily over Somerton Bridge & the Ironsides were now being stripped of their stars at a rate of knots.

Teams:

County: Mark Kendall, Eugene Martinez, John Relish (Sub Mike Pratt), Tony Reid, Terry Boyle, Roy Carter, Chris Lilygreen, John Aldridge, Neville Chamberlain, Tarki Micallef, Ceri Williams. Walsall (Printed XI): Ron Green, Brian Caswell, Kenny Mower, Craig Shakespeare, Colin Brazier, Peter Hart, Ian Handysides, Ally Brown, Richard O’Kelly, Kevin Summerfield, Gary Childs.

MATCHREPORT NORTHAMPTON TOWN

Jon Guthrie’s goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to earn Northampton Town a 1-0 win over Newport County AFC. The defender got on the end of a loose ball in the penalty area and slammed beyond Joe Day to chalk up his third goal of the campaign. County were unable to cause any real trouble for Northampton goalkeeper Liam Roberts, with Cameron Norman’s header with 12 minutes left of normal time the closest they came to drawing level. But the Exiles, who had earned two solid points against Leyton Orient and Harrogate Town, were condemned to their third league defeat of the campaign. Michael Flynn made four changes from the 2-2 draw with Harrogate Town on Friday night as County reverted to a back four, while Day chalked up his 250th appearance for the Exiles. Aneurin Livermore and Jake Cain were handed their first league starts for the Exiles in place of Ed Upson and Matty Dolan. Lewis Collins and Timmy Abraham were also brought in to replace Ollie Cooper and Alex Fisher respectively. It took County less than three minutes to open the scoring in North Yorkshire four days earlier, but it was a quiet opening to proceedings as both sides struggled to get going under the Rodney Parade lights. Robbie Willmott looked lively and helped the home side a string of early corners, but they were fortunate to not be caught out down the opposite end. County looked to create an opening with a set-piece off the training ground but Livermore’s pass failed to pick out Haynes, who was forced to bring down Ali Koiki to prevent a quick Cobblers breakaway. Danny Rose then managed to get on the end of a loose ball in the penalty and fired an effort towards goal but Priestley Farquharson threw his body in the way to deflect it to safety. It took 44 minutes for the first shot on target of the evening to arrive and it resulted in the opening goal. Livermore was shown a yellow card for a rash challenge on Jack Sowerby which allowed the Cobblers to ask a question of the home defence. Mitch Pinnock’s delivery caused problems in the penalty area before the ball 2 2 | O F F I C I A L M ATC H DAY P R O G R A M M E

fell kindly to Guthrie, who rifled beyond Day into the top corner to put the visitors ahead. County came close to finding the equaliser on the hour mark when Ryan Haynes got down the left and teed up Willmott on the edge of the area, but his shot was deflected and looped just over Roberts’ crossbar. Willmott enjoyed another opportunity to test Roberts three minutes later as he found a pocket of space on the edge of the area, only to see his shot sail wide of the post. County then had Day to thank for preventing the Cobblers from doubling their advantage when he got down quickly o palm Nicke Kabamba’s downward header away to safety - an incident which led to another blow for the Exiles as Bennett went down and was taken off on a stretcher. Finn Azaz was sent on in place of Bennett and carved out two opportunities in the space of two minutes for the hosts. First, he got beyond Mitch Pinnock and found an unmarked Norman, who headed straight at Roberts. Abraham then appeared to get the faintest of touches on another delivery from Azaz, but the ball went past the outside of the post. Norman’s long throw-in caused problems in the away side’s penalty area with nine minutes left and forced Roberts to punch the ball to the edge of the area, where Azaz was waiting but his shot flew over the crossbar. The injury to Bennett ensured there were 12 minutes of additional time indicated by the fourth official, but it brought no joy for the Exiles as they fell to defeat. Newport County AFC: Joe Day, Ryan Haynes, Mickey Demetriou (C), Priestley Farquharson, Cameron Norman, Scot Bennett (Finn Azaz 72’), Aneurin Livermore, Jake Cain (Ollie Cooper 57’), Robbie Willmott, Lewis Collins (Kevin Ellison 57’), Timmy Abraham. Subs not used: Nick Townsend, James Clarke, Matty Dolan, Aaron Lewis.

Lewis started in midfield for Wales' under-17s side in a 1-1 draw with Scotland in Stirling before being named on the bench in a thrilling 4-3 win in the second game of their double-header. It was under-18s duty for Karadogan as Wales played out a 1-1 draw at Spytty Park against England. Matty Jones’ side took the lead in the 20th minute through Fulham’s Luke Harris and led until the 76th minute before the visitors found the equaliser. Karadogan came off the bench to replace Forest Green Rovers’ Murphy Bennett at half-time and played 45 minutes for Jones’ side. Wales under-19s manager Rob Edwards started Twamley in the young Dragons’ first game of the international break and he played 45 minutes in a 2-0 loss against Croatia in Zagreb. Next up, Wales faced Austria in an end-toend encounter which finished 3-2 to the Austrians. Twamley replaced Leicester City’s Oliver Ewing in the 83rd minute and helped produce Wales' second goal which was scored by Manchester United’s Charlie Savage - the son of former Wales international Robbie Savage.

IN THE BEGINNING …

Noisy neighbours Football in the West Midlands town winds its way back to 1874 with the formation of Walsall Town. A year later Walsall Swifts flew onto the scene and the two battled for civic supremacy while sharing The Chuckery ground in the east of the town for the next 13 years. The minority of residents, whose complaints about ‘raucous noise levels’ were reported in local newspapers, were presumably relieved when the merger of the clubs into Walsall Town Swifts in 1888 ensured that the decibel count rose fortnightly rather than weekly. The merged club were founder members of the Football League Second Division in 1892 and, to the relief of the noiseabatement brigade, moved to West Bromwich Road a year later. A rebrand as Walsall FC followed in 1895 and, after a couple of failed re-election bids to the Football League, Saddlers returned for a so-far unbroken spell in 1921.

HIGHLIGHTS

Walsall’s best ever season was their sixth place finish in Division 2 in 1898-99. Led by secretary-manager G. Hughes, our visitors fell just short of promotion to the top tier, finishing four points off runners-up Glossop North End. The first half of the 2003-04 second tier campaign was a halcyon time to be a Saddler and had fans again dreaming of a place in the top flight. Thrilling 4-1 home victories over Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest were particularly well-received, while a 1-0 Boxing Day success at Cardiff City saw the club on the verge of the play-offs. Unfortunately, the

W W W. N E W P O RT- CO U N T Y.CO. U K bubble was to burst in near-explosive style with a late season crash in form leading to the departure of manager Colin Lee and subsequent relegation, Walsall hold the unusual distinction of being founder members of the Second, Third and Fourth Divisions, achieving the latter feat by default in 1958 through finishing in the bottom half of the final Division 3 (North). Their stay in the new Football League basement lasted just two seasons, as manager Bill Moore, led our visitors to their first ever league title in 1960 with the Division 4 championship.

DON’T MENTION

• T welve-nil! To misquote Oscar Wilde, to lose once by such a score line might be considered careless, but twice in four years? Such a fate first befell Saddlers in December 1892, who were on the wrong end of the dreaded dozen in a Second Division encounter at neighbours Small Heath (now Birmingham City). Four years later, they repeated the feat, this time succumbing to Darwen in the same competition. At least, our visitors were able to exact belated revenge, as in March 1899 they trounced the Lancashire side and 1881 FA Cup semi-finalists 10-0 at Fellows Park. • T he 1988-89 campaign. Walsall returned to the second tier for the first time in 25 years, but it all ended in tears. A promising 2-2 draw at Brighton in October was followed by 15 consecutive defeats before a surprise 3-0 victory at mid-table Sunderland four months later. Not surprisingly, the club finished bottom, 16 points adrift of Hull City in 21st place. • S hrewsbury Town! A 2019 Football Rivalry study by Chris Whiting sees Shrews fans name Walsall as their number one nemesis. The animosity is not entirely reciprocated however, as the Shropshire side are ranked third by polled Saddlers supporters, who rank the out-of-sight duo of West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers as one and two.

SADDLERS TODAY

Into the Play-offs Loan signing George Miller netted a brace on his home debut seven days ago as Walsall inflicted a fifth successive defeat on Nigel Clough’s Mansfield Town. The deadline day arrival from Barnsley scored early in each half, while Ash Taylor was also on target prior to Danny’s Johnson’s late consolation. The 3-1 success, following on from the battling 1-1 draw at Bradford City - where former County midfielder Joss Labadie received a 43rd minute red card ruling him out of this afternoon’s encounter - and earlier home victory over Stevenage have lifted the spirits of all at the Bescot.

HEAD COACH’S VIEW

Matt Taylor, in his first season in charge following his summer appointment, was in buoyant mood speaking to the press after the Mansfield win. ‘The players are really confident, and I am hoping that confidence will continue to grow. We are extremely confident in the group we have, and you are starting to see some snippets where the players are showing that. The players were exceptional against Mansfield in their work rate and attitude. For large spells of the game, we were in control. Maybe we should not have conceded the goal, but at that time they had four forwards on the pitch. ‘To a man, every single player did their job. That is what I asked of them, and they went out and did it. Mansfield did not have a second to breathe or relax. We continually harried them. We were superior in our work rate, which is fantastic as I think Mansfield are a good team with some very good footballers. We need to enjoy this feeling and understand how hard we have to work for this feeling.’

FANS’ VIEWS

‘Our key player will be Conor Wilkinson. For once, we have signed a striker who knows where the net is. It could be the difference between excitement and obscurity. Head Coach Matt Taylor can clearly sell the club. He followed an excellent media unveiling by signing three proven League Two players whose clubs were upset to see them go.’ Rob Jones, talking to ‘FourFourTwo’ magazine, hails the virtues of our former loan striker Conor Wilkinson, who netted Leyton Orient’s winner against us in South Wales last season. One of those ‘proven League Two players’ is of course suspended this afternoon. ‘Newport will be there or thereabouts again.’ ‘jjunior9’ talking up County on the ‘Up the Saddlers’ fans’ forum. ‘A bit of footage (from You Tube) from the 1979-80 season when Newport did get the result they needed at Fellows Park. Think the claim was they brought over 6,000. They brought a lot. But not that many.’ ‘PT’, from the same forum, spoiling the County hyperbole from the 1979-80 promotion campaign. No official away figures then, but a 50/50 split in a crowd of 9,251 does not seem far off from an amber-hazed memory.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
