JAMES ROWBERRY Good EVENING everyone and welcome to today’s match against Sutton, I would like to give a warm welcome to Matt Gray and his staff… It’s good to be back at Rodney Parade after another long period away which included back-to-back away trips followed by a 10-day stretch with no games at all. We have been glad for the extended period of time on the training ground though after what was a tough run of three games in six days which began a fortnight ago. The results were not quite what we wanted as We approach every game trying to win it, but two hard-fought draws away from home in the space of four days were pleasing. The Colchester game was a frustrating one though, especially as we’ve dominated on the shot count, had a higher Expected Goals number. While it’s probably the most frustrated I’ve been since I arrived at the

club, it shows the strength of our processes that we’ve controlled the game in certain elements, had lots of shots at their goal and created good chances. If we keep on following our processes, we’ll definitely keep progressing. As always your support is so much appreciated from myself, my staff and my players. I hope we’ll put in a performance you’ll be proud of.

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler
A warm welcome back to Rodney Parade not only for our supporters, but also to our guests Sutton United whom we crossed swords with back in our non-league days of course…
This evening, we recall though the pages of the dusty match day programme, a Nationwide Conference South fixture from April 1st, 2006, between us and the U’s where we needed the magic of a late Jason Bowen goal to ensure the valuable three points stayed in Wales via a 1-0 win. The cover of the 44-page,two pounds issue shows a great view of the main stand at Spytty Park, as well as vintage snaps of our promotion/ Welsh Cup winning year of 1979/80. First up is ‘From the Manager’who at the time was one Peter Beadle. The well-travelledformer striker, whose time here is still viewed fondly amongst most supporters, was in typically upbeat mood and opened by saying the last three matches have shown the capabilities of the side. He gives the “Simple explanation” of the side sticking to the game plan, cutting out the mistakes and in the last two matches in particular“Taking our chances.” Those last three fixtures had gleaned seven precious points with wins over Basingstoke (2-0) at home, as well as a maximum point haul at Bishop’s Stortford (1-0). An additional point in a 1-1 draw at Bognor Regis Town had provided the glistening cherry on a very sought-after cake. Beads also welcomed Nathan Bailey, whose last club had been Forest Green
Rovers after being released by his home-town club Reading, as well as saying thank you and goodbye to former Welsh international Andy Legg who had been with us briefly before being installed as Assistant Manager at Peterborough. Up next was‘Club News’and exiled County fan Pat O’Light, based in Killarney, Southern Ireland was looking for a penfriend;whilst elsewhere, our former right-back of the late 70s early 80s, the purring Richard Walden was delighted to have been recently back in touch with his former boss, the man who signed him for Newport County, Len Ashurst. Lastly, the legend that isNathan Davies was due to make his 250th firstteam appearance in this Sutton clash (which he did). We delve swiftly on to‘Player Profile’ featuring the

previously mentioned Nathan Bailey, and he was keen to impress andget a deal here for the following season. Nathan remarks that he travels up to Newport with Chippenhambased Matt Green and still trained everyday with his father Keith. The affable Nathan also name-checks his 13-year-old sister Sophie, who was keen on her big brother doing well with us and was already the proud owner of a Newport County shirt. In ‘Look Back in Amber ’we were served up the second part of Andrew Taylor’s interview with Len Ashurst, within which Len looks back at his time in charge but focuses in part on a couple of failures in the transfer market in Jeff Johnson and Alan Waddle. Len was still at a loss to explain why the Cardiff-born Johnson had disappointed so much, citing …“I haven’t a clue why it didn’t work out?”… although he wistfully added …“I thought Jeff would be the answer, I knew what he was like, he was a lovely lad and I thought he would do me a turn.”Len put Waddle’s failure down to his “Heart not being in it.” There is smashing doublespread look at our away trip to Bishop’s Stortford the previous Saturday, seen through the eyes of directors Colin Everett and Rob Santwris. From the 08:15am sharp departure time until the return back home, it gives a detailed account of the day including pre-match meal at ‘Sleepy Harrow’ of eggs, beans and toast, the on-coach risky jokes from Kitman Tony Gilbert, the ghettoblaster of the players’ changing room, right down to the fact that absent chairman Chris Blight almost dropped his mobile into the Spanish pool where he was staying when informed of our vital win! The fish and chips, all thirstily washed down with a few beers were also enjoyed on the way home; no doubtsavoured even more by the fact that Craig Hughes’ goal had been enough to win the match. The ‘Local Football Scene’was covered at the time too in this
value-for-money production, by the knowledgeable Mike Tasker, where he rounded up news from fellow city clubs like Newport YMCA, Caerleon, Llanwern, as well as others from slightly further afield in Chepstow Town and Treowen. Our recent Youth Team’s results were reported back by roving reporter Mark Vickery and it was a clean sweep of wins to proudly trill as Swindon Town had been beaten in the FL Youth Alliance League (1-0), Basingstoke (3-1) in the South-West Counties division, and last but not least, in the Wales Youth East League Risca United were also overcome by a single goal. Overleaf was ‘Amber Archive’ and Ade Williams was looking at his scarf collection and the changing football fashions on the terraces in general. Wily Ade also glanced back at what different colours we wore, either around our necks or, for a time that inexplicably seemed fashionable during the Seventies, around our wrists, and what such garments were now worth online via theauction sites. Finally, we have three pages dedicated to our friends from Gander Green Lane. Up to that point in time, we had enjoyed a six-match history with United and a lot of our fans would remember our two cup clashes in the 199293 season when we drew Sutton not only in the FA Cup, but also in the FA Trophy as well. Both ties were played at our exiled ground at Meadow Park in Gloucester, where 810 (including a few hundred away fans) watched the U’s comfortable 4-1 victory in the big Cup tie, while 400 watched a trophy clash which also went Sutton’s way, only this time by a closer 2-1 margin. Ian Hazell was the man in the Sutton hot seat at the time and, being honest, the only the name I vaguely recall in their ranks is that of former Wimbledon and
Oxford United midfielder Peter Fear. Going into the match with seven to play, we were in a desperate 21st spot with Sutton looking safe in 16th position; so, this 1-0 win was a very welcome tonic indeed. Thankfully, after this victorywe amassed 10 points from the six games remaining and that proved sufficient to see us finish in 18th spot and safe. Phew! Teams: County: Tony Pennock, Lee Jenkins, Paul Coughlin, Nathan Davies, John Brough, Ian Hillier, Jason Bowen, Ashley Williams, Matt Green, Craig Hughes, Sam O’ Sullivan. Subs:Geraint Bater (Jenkins), Nathan Bailey (Green), Gary Frisken (O’Sullivan), Tyrone Topper,Kieron Blackburn. Sutton United (as printed):Carl Emberson, Ryan Palmer, Lewis Gonsalves, John Scarborough, Gary Elliott, Glenn Boosey, Matt Grey, Paul Honey, LukeCornwall, Mark Watson, Eddie Akuamoah. Subs:Michael Gordon, Peter Fear, Richard Blackwell, Luke Adams, Phil Wilson.

View from the
boardroom A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Sutton United for this evenings’s EFL League Two home fixture. It’s been a while since our last home game given the break and games on the road. Our thanks as always to those that travelled to Crawley and Colchester. Two tough trips. Great support which is much appreciated. Thank you to those that attended and watched online our recent open meeting. We have been unable to hold a meeting for a while due to the pandemic, so it was great to see so many supporters in person again. It was a good evening with Rob Philips interviewing manager James Rowberry about his first few weeks at the club. Sporting Director Darren Kelly then gave an insight into his role, what has been achieved to date and what is planned. This was followed by our General Manager Nigel Stephenson who gave an update on all areas of the club. Kelly Anderson, Head of Safeguarding shared some of the work she has been undertaking. Director Joe Crocker then gave an update on the Trust and we finished with some questions and answers. We will hold another event in the New Year. The Exiles Together recently hosted the Bradford
Bantams who had made the long trip south as part of developing the relationship between both clubs under an initiative led by the Football Supporters Association. I was privileged to be able to welcome the Bantams to Rodney Parade and give them a tour of the stadium. It was a great event and my thanks to Jalal Goni (Exiles Together) and Anwar Uddin (Football Supporters Association) for arranging. We look forward to visiting the bantams in March. With Christmas fast approaching, the club will again be supporting charities that operate in the area of homelessness and foodbanks. We have been working with supporters and charities to see how we can best support. We will share these through our social media channels over the coming weeks. Finally, a date for your diary. This year’s carol service will be held on Monday 13th December at 7pm at St Johns Church. Everyone is welcome to attend. Thanks to everyone for the continued support. Good luck to the lads this evening. Gavin

Giving Football Back to Small Business Football is a game of many opinions, but there is one that we must all share. There is no place for discrimination in our game. If you do not agree, then you are not welcome. If you see or hear discrimination in this stadium, please report it to the nearest steward or via the Kick it Out App.
At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

IN THE BEGINNING …
This evening’s visitors came into being in March 1898 when members of local clubs Sutton Association and Sutton Guild Rovers met at the Robin Hood Hotel and agreed on a ‘united’ approach as the best way forward for football in the south London borough of Sutton. A hundred and twenty three years later, the footballing pioneers must have looked down proudly from their celestial berth as their club reached the Football League. Such lofty heights must have seemed a far way off as the fledgling club settled in the foothills of junior football for over a decade before joining the Southern Suburban League in 1910.
HIGHLIGHTS
U’s first came to the attention of the wider footballing world in January 1970 as they welcomed League champions Leeds United to Gander Green Lane for a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Sutton’s record appearance holder Larry Pritchard, then a 25-year-old telephone engineer, recalls manager Sid Cann’s pre-match instruction to ‘look after Billy Bremner and Johnny Giles’, a task that First Division midfielders found nigh on impossible! Though our visitors lost 6-0, Pritchardtold ‘The Daily Express’: ‘Giles and Bremner were very good, and competitive. There were a few bruises but that is what you expected. They were renowned for their ability to catch people. Leeds took us very seriously. When you are playing a side below you, you can end up looking the mugs. They did not let up, but they did not lord it. They were straight, disciplined. We always had decent crowds, but it was different that day. The atmosphere was fantastic. What hit you was their speed of thought and passing.’ Former England amateur international Pritchard and a few of his team mates that afternoon had the last laugh 47 years later, as they were guests of honour when Championship Leeds came calling to south London again in the FA Cup Fourth Road. This time, unlike his illustrious 1970 predecessor Don Revie, Whites’ boss Gary Monk opted to make 10 changes against opposition 83 places
below his side, and lived to regret the decision as former County player Jamie Collins slotted home a 53rd minute penalty to give Sutton a shock 1-0 win. Sutton’s greatest FA Cup achievement remains their 2-1 win over FA Cup holders Coventry City, a match which has its own Wikipedia page! U’s Carmarthen-born boss Barrie Williams, a former History teacher, bagged his fair share of the media headlines with his penchant for quoting Shakespeare and Kipling, but the manager, who sadly died three years ago, proved his tactical knowledge was on a par with his literary, reflecting ‘I am delighted that we won by playing good football.’ Goal scorers Tony Rains and Matthew Hanlan also ensured their time in the sun lasted significantly longer than 90 minutes as they were guests on Terry Wogan’s chat show two days later, an essential tick in the box for any 1980s celebrity. For all their FA Cup heroics, Sutton’s greatest achievement has to be last season’s promotion to the Football League for the first time in their 123-year history. United boss Matt Gray, who first crossed County’s radar at Havant & Waterlooville in the Conference South years, took up his present post in April 2019, and reflected: ‘There are so many good teams and managers in the National League, and you look at the size of the clubs. For us to come out on top is an unbelievable achievement. I am so lucky to be at this club. Everyone pulls in the same direction, and we have an unbelievable group of players and an unbelievable group of staff.’ Ironically, his assistant, Micky Stephens, provides a link to the Coventry success 32 years earlier, playing in midfield in what had been the most celebrated day in Sutton’s history!
MANAGER’S VIEW
Matt Gray is certainly not getting carried away with his side’s hugely encouraging start to the season. ‘We have 32 points after 19 games, so I am delighted where we are. Our first goal is 50 points, and we are on course hopefully to get it pretty quickly. But, like last season, who knows what can happen?’
FANS’ VIEWS
‘Nineteen games is a little too early in my opinion. But then again, 19 games is a good indication of how the season is going. Our previous manager believed that to be considered title contenders it was best to be averaging two points per game. At the moment, only Forest Green Rovers are doing that. Looking at the table currently, I would say too many teams have similar points’ totals to say who is firmly in the running for the automatic and play off spots. However, a busy December will give a clearer indication. Likewise, between now and New Year’s Day, Sutton have got Newport and Bradford away, Harrogate at home, Bristol Rovers away and Exeter at home. Some very difficult games there, and to be honest, I am more concerned about getting to 51 points first and then consider where we will be in terms of promotion and the play offs. Lots of football still to be played. Swansea-based Sutton fan ‘JaredSUFC’ with a very eloquent assessment of United’s progress on the ‘League Two Forum’.
DON’T MENTION
• G reen and white. For some reason, U’s dropped their unique amber and chocolate playing kit in favour of a new image in 1929. The traditional colours date back to the caps worn by Sutton St Barnabas Cricket Club in the 1860s and became synonymous with Sutton sport, so the reaction to the change was on a par with Vincent Tan’s red relaunch down the road in 2012. Sutton’s colour change lasted a year less than Cardiff City’s, as by 1931 chocolate and amber returned. he 2007-08 Conference South season as United finished • T bottom of the table, with just five wins and 10 points adrift of Dorchester Town. Hopes were high after a pre-season victory over Brentford, but despite 12 goals from current player/fitness coach Craig Dundas, a run of nine successive defeats towards the end of the campaign sealed Sutton’s fate.
U’S TODAY Double home success
Sutton took a break from League Two action with the trip to Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup Second Round three days ago. Successive home victories over Mansfield Town and Barrow have lifted United to sixth in the table, four points ahead of County and one behind third placed Exeter City. Former Worthing striker David Ajiboye sealed the points with a 16th minute left foot strike, with Sutton withstanding the twin threats of Storm Arwen and a late Barrow whirlwind that saw keeper Dean Bouzanis in impressive form. Twenty-three-year-old Ajiboye told the club’s You Tube channel:: ‘I cut in on my left and thought “I might as well hit this”, as I don’t normally take my chances with my left foot, and it went in! It was very cold and very windy and that worked for and against us. It was difficult in the second half against the wind. We played on the counter attack more and it was difficult to defend against the wind. The changing room is buzzing now, and we have just got to keep the run going.’
THE COUNTY CONNECTION
County and United first crossed paths in the original club’s aborted Conference campaign when a Paul Sugrue goal earned John Mahoney’s side a point at Gander Green Lane. Four seasons later, Isthmian League Premier Division Sutton won twice in a month at Southern League Midland Division Newport AFC’s Gloucester base to eliminate Newport from both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. The clubs then became regular opponents over a four-season spell in the Conference South where, as seen below, County redressed the balance somewhat results wise.

Like an increasing number of managers at our level, Matt had a modest career as a player and started coaching young after being forced to retire through injury, in his case at the age of 25. The Londoner played youth football for Tottenham and Cardiff and began his senior career at Barnet, with stints at Hayes and Havant & Waterlooville where he was appointed captain.

Founded in 1955 by Robert Cole D.F.C., who qualified as an optician after serving with distinction as a fighter pilot in the RAF in WWII. Mr Cole retired in the 1995 and the practice was taken over by the current owners, who were working with him at the time. Richard Young, now the practice’s senior optometrist, started working at the practice in 1992, and is a life-long County fan. The first game Richard attended was the famous FA Cup victory over the star-studded West Ham United at Somerton Park in January 1979. Founded in 1984, Kidscape are passionate about working with and supporting children and families who through no fault of their own, have been faced with bullying and the trauma felt when going through it, which can last for several years. Through our work, we have been fortunate to meet so many children who we have helped deal with negative behaviour and who have gained strength, confidence, and resilience after attending one of our ZAP workshops. The workshops are about having fun but throughout the workshops, we deliver a set of Kidscape tools which we share with children in learning how to deal with and manage conflict and behaviour that has negative connotations and teach them that responding in a negative way, only serves to escalate the problem. When bullied, children lose all sense of worth, value, confidence, feel lonely and isolated and the pandemic has heightened the sense of segregation as children are unsure where they fit into previous friendship groups and as a result, feel distant from friends. Kidscape also deliver online ZAP workshops, as well as face to face which gives families a diverse way in which they can engage in our workshops. I am pleased to say that we can return to delivering our Community ZAP full day workshops in Newport on Monday 21st February 2022, venue yet to be confirmed, that we would encourage families to access, free of charge.
