JAMES ROWBERRY Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoon’s game. I would like to extend my welcome to John Sheridan and his staff. Since my last notes we’ve had two tough away games at promotionchasing sides. We now have an opportunity to work our way back into form with our stretch of five-straight home games starting today. Although they’re twenty third, Oldham have started a resurgence under John Sheridan and will be a really tough challenge after picking up seven points from a possible nine since John has returned. He is a manager who knows how to get struggling teams away from trouble and we need to be on top of our game today. As I’ve mentioned, we need to make this stretch of games at Rodney Parade count and I know you’ll keep up your tremendous support which has been and will be so vital as we approach the final third of the season. Thank you for your continued backing and I hope you enjoy the game. James

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler
Welcome back to Rodney Parade for our League Two clash with Oldham Athletic, and it’s a quick trip back in time this afternoon as we glance back to last season’s fixture that the Latics won by four goals to two….
The programme issued was a 24page production and featured our late boss, the much-loved and missed Justin Edinburgh on its cover as the day of this match, Saturday 19th December 2020 was the day after Justin should have been celebrating his 51st birthday. This match saw both sides show their support for the excellent JE3 foundation that was set up by his son Charlie, to campaign for a change in legislative law and make it compulsory for all health, fitness and sports facilities to be equipped with defibrillators. This very thing is touched upon by Michael Flynn in his opening piece and he also notes that the players had covered more than 1,000 miles in seven days competing in three “Tough away games.” Indeed, our December, preChristmas UK tour had taken us to dates in Cleethorpes where, at Grimsby Town, we came back with all three points courtesy of a 2-1 win thanks to a Scott Twine strike and a Padraig Amond spot-kick. Then, we moved swiftly onto Leyton Orient and for the first time that season, a crowd of home supporters, albeit one only totalling 1,734 who saw their team fight back from a 0-1
deficit (thanks to a Jamie Proctor goal) to win it 2-1. Lastly, it was a trek to the north-west where Salford lay in wait for the travel weary Exiles, and it was most definitely a point gained when in addedon time, a Josh Sheehan penalty earned us a 1-1 draw. Michael credits Nick Townsend for “Some of the saves that he pulled off” but gave the forwards a warning by saying we needed to “Take our chances down the other end.” After perusing some glossy snaps from our recent 2-1 home win over Morecambe, we find the current league table and what a joy to see County nestling on top of the pile; alas, of course, it wasn’t to last but after 18 matches played, we were two points clear of second-placed Carlisle United. Oldham were 16th so their deserved win on this day was most certainly viewed

as a surprise and possibly even a shock. This ‘Amber from the Attic’ column was up next, and we took the opportunity to recall a 0-0 draw between the clubs from August 1962. A crowd of 10,488 turned up to witness County’s first ever Division Four fixture after the previous season’s relegation from the newly nationalised third tier. In a lovely tribute to Justin, Caitlin Bennett happened along next, and she picked out four of the Gaffer’s best wins during his time in our dugout. For the record, they were County vs. Wealdstone (3-1), an FA Trophy Semi-Final (1st leg) win at Spytty Park that all but assured us of our first ever Wembley trip in 2012; we played out a 0-0 draw in London in the second leg. The next match was the pulsating March 2013 win over local rivals Hereford United (32), where, spurred on by over a thousand ecstatic travelling fans, we came back from 0-1 and 1-2 down in a match that had absolutely everything a n d i s st i l l fo n d l y remembered today as one of those immortal ”I was there” games. Next up unsurprisingly was our Play-off Final Wembley win over Wrexham when Christian Jolley and Aaron O’Connor ’s late, late strikes saw off our North Walian rivals (2-0) in that never-to-be-forgotten 5th May 2013 encounter that banished a quarter of a century of hurt. Our very next competitive match following that epic day is the last one Caitlin purrs over, and that came in our Football League opener, a resounding 4-1 hammering on a suitably boiling hot, beautiful day at Rodney Parade over Accrington Stanley. Callum Ellis, our former
media manager is up next and he’s interviewing Charlie Edinburgh; obviously taking advantage of the previous week’s Orient/County clash. There is an accompanying picture of boss Flynn & skipper Joss Labadie being presented with a defibrillator by Charlie, something Justin would have been immensely proud of. Up next, we look at Oldham, a club who were formed in 1895 as Pine Villa. They have played at all levels of the game, from the Manchester Alliance right up to the Premier League itself (a founder member no less!) and have always proved tough opposition for the County both pre and post 1989. A few names in their squad leap out at me, both defenders; one is Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, a former Manchester United player as well as being part of the Leeds United team who we dumped out of the FA Cup in 2018, and Sido Jombati, the former Bath City player who always seemed to impress against us in those Conference South days. Indeed, he got an assist in this match too. For the record, both have now left Boundary Park; Bor thwick-Jackson is currently at Burton Albion while the Lisbonborn Jombati is now at Ebbsfleet. Harry Kewell was their head coach at the time; he briefly started this season at Barnet before being fired after no wins and five losses in their first seven games of the season. In charge that af ternoon was former Premier Le a g u e refe re e Bobby Madley and, at half-time, it looked like business as usual as goals from Scott Twine and Scot Bennett had us in a 2-1
lead after Davis Keillor-Dunn had equalised Twine’s 8th minute opener in the 14th. Unfortunately, a disjointed and poor second-half saw Athletic run us ragged and score three times. Conor McAleny (57), Alfie McCalmont (85), and Zach Dearnley (90 + 3) being the pesky culprits who inflicted the damage. Teams: County: Nick Townsend, Liam Shephard, Ryan Haynes (Tristan Abrahams), Brandon Cooper, Micky Demetriou, Robbie Willmott (Kevin Ellison), Josh Sheehan, Scot Bennett, Scott Twine, Lewis Collins (Jamie Devitt), Jamie Protor (Padraig Amond). Subs not used: Tom King, David Longe-King, Matty Dolan. Oldham: Ian Lawlor, Harry Clarke, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (Jordan Barnett), Sido Jombati, Carl Peirgianni, Ben Garrity, Davis Keillor-Dunn, Brice Ntambwe, Conor McAleny (Alfie McCalmont), Dylan Bahamboula (Thomas Hamer), Bobby Grant (Zach Dearnley). Subs not used: Laurence Bilboe, Callum Whelan, Dylan Flage.

View from the
boardroom A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Oldham Athletic to this afternoon’s EFL League Two home fixture. Thank you to the amber army who travelled in great numbers to FGR last weekend quickly followed by the trip to Northampton. As always, the support is much appreciated by everyone in the club. We welcome Casacade Youth Football club from Caerphilly to today’s game. The charity at today’s game is Sparkle Serennu, a local children’s charity who provide recreational activities for children with developmental and disability needs. I hope you all have an enjoyable day. As always, we have all our pre-match entertainment in the marquee and thanks to all our partners for supporting. I wanted to mention the milestone of Scot Bennett who reached 250 games for the club at FGR. It is an incredible achievement. Anyone who has met Scot will know not only is he a great servant to the club but an all round decent human being. His family have been settled in Newport for some time and shows his commitment to the club. The club is very proud of the achievement
as I am sure is his family. Well done Scot! Supporters would have seen the launch of the joint ticket between the club and the Dragons. Fans have the chance to watch our game against Mansfield (19th February) and then the next day the Dragons take on Ulster. We are excited by this initiative and hopefully there will be a good uptake! In addition and continuing the theme of joint working I am delighted that we will have a retail match day presence in the Dragons retail shop, situated next door to the Ticket office. The shop will open at 10:00am. and close at kick off. It will then re-open after the game until 5:30pm. Supporters will be able to purchase a range of club merchandise. Today in hospitality we are hosting two local 10 year old lads, Adam Heard and Callum Jarvis who kindly came to the aid of a local Beechwood resident who was involved in a collision with a car. We hope they both have a lovely day! Good luck to the lads this afternoon. Thanks for your support as always. Stay safe everyone. Gavin

FOUNDATION PHASE & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PHASE As the penultimate week of January comes to end, we would like to share some of our stories from our Academy Schoolboy Programme (U9 – U16) from this month. Our Academy age groups have competed extremely well within fixtures against the likes of Cheltenham Town & Bristol City FC. Which is credit to the collective hard work of everyone involved in each player’s journey, from parents, to staff and of course the player themself. Our U15 age group has continued to represent the Football Club, Academy and themselves well within the U15 Floodlit Cup Competition, competing against the likes of Cardiff City & Swansea City, Plymouth Argyle & Exeter City FC. Recently our U9’s & U10’s were extremely lucky to have the opportunity to support our first team in their behind closed doors, 4-0 win against Harrogate. Our Academy players came in as ball boys, they did an fantastic job and were fortunate enough to meet some of the players (picture left). Ryan Morley (FDP Lead) & Bobby-McKenzie Black (YDP Lead)
The Academy scholars had a special visitor last week as Kevin Ellison popped in to work with the group. Kevin is currently undertaking his coaching badges and it was brilliant for the players to learn from his experience on the day.

IN THE BEGINNING …
With the demise of Lancashire League professional outfit Oldham County in 1898, a vacuum existed in the local football market for one of the innumerable ‘pub’ teams in the area to step up and fill. Enter Pine Villa, formed three years earlier by John Garland, landlord of the Featherstall and Junction Hotel, who moved into County’s Sheepfoot Lane in 1899 and rebranded as Oldham Athletic. For a club used to playing the likes of Berry’s Blacking Works’ Second XI, it was quite a step up and ‘Latics’ initially operated at county level upon moving to senior football. However, by 1907, our upwardly mobile visitors gained election to the Football League’s Second Division and won promotion to the top tier just three years later. Doubtless, it was a case of drinks all round at the Featherstall and Junction Hotel!
HIGHLIGHTS
Remarkably, in 1913, just 18 years after their formation, Herbert Bamlett’s Latics finished fourth in Division 1 and reached the FA Cup semi-final, losing 1-0 to eventual winners Aston Villa in front of a crowd of 22,616 at Blackburn’s Ewood Park. The following season, Oldham reached the last eight of the FA Cup and finished runnersup in the league, just a point behind champions Everton, who they beat 4-3 in a dramatic encounter at Goodison Park. It took this afternoon’s visitors 77 years to reach another FA Cup semi-final, and this time Joe Royle’s Second Division battlers took Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United to a Villa Park replay in 1990 before losing to an extra time winner by current Coventry City boss Mark Robins. Latics’ next and, so far, last FA Cup semi-final appearance in 1994 was even more heart-breaking and arguably the beginning of Oldham’s slide down the football pyramid. Athletic were just a minute away from a 1-0 victory over neighbours United, when up stepped Welsh international Mark Hughes with a last gasp equaliser and the Red Devils cruised to a 4-1 victory in the Maine Road replay.
W W W. N E W P O RT- CO U N T Y.CO. U K Oldham have spent 12 seasons in English football’s top flight and were founder members of the FA Premier League in 1992 after winning the Second Division title. Their first season in the Premier League saw them win their last three games to dramatically edge clear of relegation on goal difference, and they survived another two seasons dining at English football’s top table before the departure of manager Joe Royle to Everton and the break-up of the side including the likes of Earl Barrett, Graeme Sharp, Darren Beckford and Andy Ritchie.
DON’T MENTION •
he 1959-60 campaign, as Oldham finished in their lowest league T position, 23rd in Division 4, just one place above Hartlepools United. Fortunately, Norman Dodgin’s side survived the reelection process, as the Football League member clubs controversially voted out north-eastern outpost Gateshead, who finished five points ahead of Latics, in favour of the more centrally-based Peterborough United. Visiting fans will be hoping that the 59-60 season remains their club’s worst-ever campaign in three months time.
•
ldham ended a 21-year stay in the third tier with relegation O to League Two in 2018. The spell had its highlights, with an Oxford-based businessman promising Premier League football within five years in 2001, a play-off semi-final appearance in 2007 and an FA Cup victory over Liverpool in 2010, though their return to fourth tier football for the first time since 1971 has been traumatic. The club faced HMRC winding-up petitions in late 2019 and early 2020 before the debt was settled, while six managers have occupied the Boundary Park hot-seat prior to the recent return of former County boss John Sheridan for a third spell in charge.
•
ed and blue hoops! Oldham’s adoption of the unusual playing R kit in 1996 proved unpopular with supporters. The style was an acknowledgement to Pine Villa, who had worn a similar combination 100 years earlier, but was swiftly dropped by manager Neil; Warnock for a return to the more familiar blue and white in 1998. While on the subject of quirky playing kits, Latics’ radical adoption of tangerine shirts and blue shirts between 1968 and 1972 actually received a favourable reception, doubtless helped by Jimmy Frizzell’s side winning promotion to Division 3 in 1971. Tangerine and blue has since featured as a change kit for Oldham,
I would like to think there is a buzz, I can feel it a bit. It has been very difficult for the fans, for everyone involved in the club, but the only thing I can concentrate on is not to think about it. Tommy Wright (assistant) and me enjoy a laugh in training and work our socks off. Hopefully, the players can go out with a bit of belief to turn a corner. I have a lot of time for the club. I am here to keep the club and fans in the Football League.’
FANS’ VIEWS
A quick look at ‘www.owtb.co.uk’ message board ahead of this afternoon’s encounter shows Latics fans to be in an altogether happier place since the return of John Sheridan to the dug-out. ‘Off to Newport now as well. If you would have said that last month, I would have laughed.’ Amazing what a win can do. ‘daniel’ in high spirits after the Scunthorpe victory. ‘Northampton and Newport are in the midst of mass of fields and nothing else. So it would be harder to settle. He would hit the ground running here.’ ‘Chris15Arm’ speculating as to why recent Latics signing Chris Missilou enjoyed only brief stays at Northampton and Newport. Presumably, he has yet to visit south east Wales! ‘Newport (who are a significantly smaller club than us on every level) got to the play-off final last season. The play off final was contested by Morecambe and Newport; we have bigger support than both of them. Cheltenham and Cambridge went up; again we have a bigger support than both of those clubs. We are in the 4th division now, where you don’t need 20,000 supporters.’ All about size for ‘GlossopLatic’. ‘Both refs were biased and completely influenced by Newport getting in their ear from minute one, other than that Newport had nothing to offer. Ironically, if we would have started with the 53-year-old Kevin Ellison, we would have more than likely got something from the game.’ ‘yarddog73’ with a slightly subjective reflection of our opening day 1-0 victory at Boundary Park. Doubtless, he/she will be wishing Kev a happy 43rd birthday in 11 days’ time!
THE COUNTY CONNECTION
LATICS’ TODAY
Vital victory Oldham gave their League Two survival hopes a much-needed boost seven days ago with a 1-0 win at Scunthorpe United in the battle of the bottom two. Substitute Junior Luamba netted what could prove a crucial goal for Latics seven minutes from time, forcing the ball home amid a goalmouth scramble to earn a first win for John Sheridan since his return to the club a fortnight earlier. The victory, Oldham’s first since November, lifted our visitors to within five points of Carlisle United ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with improving Bristol Rovers.
MANAGER’S VIEW
John Sheridan talking to ‘The Manchester Evening News’ on the task ahead. ‘I am a firm believer that I would not have come in if I thought we will get relegated, I would have stayed home. It is going to be tough; we have a bit of a gap but that can be turned around in four, five, or six games. There is a little league of five or six teams, and we are capable, and we believe that we can finish top of that mini-league. It will be an achievement if we stay up. That is what we have to look at, we have a big fight on our hands, but it is achievable.

MEET THE MANAGER
John Sheridan:
Returned last month to start a remarkable fourth stint in what has become arguably the hottest seat in League Two, on top of two spells in caretaker charge. John, of course, managed County from October 2015 when he succeeded Terry Butcher until January 2016 when he started his second substantive spell at Boundary Park. John’s involvement with the Latics began with some 164 appearances in the heart of midfield to close an illustrious career which included more than 270 games for Leeds United and more than 240 for Sheffield Wednesday, as well as 34 caps for Ireland with appearances at two World Cups. Moving into management in 2006, John had completed more than 10 years at Boundary Park as player, coach and manager by the time his first spell with Oldham ended in 2009. He joined Chesterfield later that year and stayed three years, followed by two and a half years with Plymouth Argyle before his time at Rodney Parade. Since then a series of short-lived roles has seen him manage Notts County, Fleetwood Town, Carlisle United, Chesterfield again, Waterford in Ireland, Wigan Athletic and most recently Swindon Town.
