JAMES ROWBERRY Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoon’s game. I would like to extend my welcome to Nigel Clough and his staff. Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoon’s game. I would like to extend my welcome to Nigel Clough and his staff. Today is our second in our run of five home games in a row and a tough run of games does not get any easier, with promotion-chasing Mansfield visiting us today who promise to be a challenging opponent. They are on a terrific run of late and are unbeaten since late November so we need to make sure we are solid defensively and clinical in attack to get a positive performance this afternoon. As always we will learn from every game, especially with the draw against Oldham. We dominated the game on shots and Expected Goals but we didn’t defend well enough as a team on Saturday. We have done all we can this week to work on that as a collective. Thank you for your support and enjoy the game. James

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler
We rummage through the programme archives once more this afternoon as we welcome old foes Mansfield Town to Rodney Parade and look at their visit to Newport that took place on Saturday December 1st 1962.
It was the Ironsides’ Golden Jubilee year, but it turned into a celebratory season more for Mansfield than us as they pipped Gillingham to 4th place at the end of the season, on goal average, to claim the last promotion spot. The programme opened with editor Fred Beare’s ‘Editorial’ column and he began by congratulating the team on their excellent 4-0 home win over Exeter City in our last match. The Grecians were described by Fred as ”A poor team” as he doffed his cap to striker Joe Bonson, who helped himself to a treble. He also notes: “Apart from the unfortunate incident near the end, it was a clean and sporting match.” Joe’s partner up top, Ralph Hunt also netted, and it was hoped that he could possibly“Catch up to Chapman, the Mansfield inside forward” who, it appears, had recently been topping the Division Four scoring charts. In other musings, Mr B. was clearly displeased with the referee in our recent Welsh League clash with Swansea at the Vetch, citing some of his decisions as “Extraordinary” and “Peculiar.” However, he did reserve praise for Derek Sullivan who “Dominated the middle” but noted
that “Young Jake Screen” had a “Nightmare” match up against the tricky Swans right winger Morris. Two parish notices ended the piece and they were the news that it was hoped the Supporters’ Club would soon have programmes from other clubs to sell, including “Some from the Continent.” Lastly, best wishes were extended to the Treasurer of the Development Association, Stan Rowlands, who had recently undergone an operation at the Royal Gwent Hospital. Page three is neatly split between a look at ‘Today’s Visitors’ and a profile of the Cheshire Home at Llanhennock, near Caerleon, that was the beneficiary of the day’s collection organised by Toc H. We discover during a potted history of the Stags that they were formed in 1905 and elected to the League

in 1931. The last time we had played them was in April 1960 when they sneaked a 0-1 win here in a Third Division match, Nevertheless, the writer was tipping this clash to be the “Match of the Season” as Town had “Made their best start for many years.” They were in fact second in the table come kick off, with County nine points behind in 11th. The middles pages are where we find the teams, classically laid out in formation style, along with the usual adverts for a mixture of local firms and various newspapers; step forward, amongst others, Gilesports, Rediffusion, British Rail as well as The Football Argus and Sunday Express. We then arrive on page six and find the current league table and the up-to-date club goal-scoring charts. The prolific Hunt (19) and Bonson (13) unsurprisingly leading the way, and whilst man-in-waiting, Laurie Sheffield only had one solitary strike in the league, he had cashed in 16 times for our reserves. There is also the exotic name (by early 1960s standards, certainly) of Elkanah Onyeali who had scored twice in the Welsh League up to this first advent opening day of the last month of the year. Other notices on the inside-back page concern messages for patients for our hospital broadcast team of David Roberts, Desmond Matthews and Ira Headworth to convey during their coverage of matches at Somerton Park. The service not only covered the Gwent, but also the nearby St Wollos and Cefn Mably hospitals too. Also Squeezed into the busy page are adverts for
Wildings and Syd Jenkins (Coal and Transport), plus the usual plea to join the Supporters’ Club along with the obligatory ‘Half-time Scores’ panel. Other fixtures on this day included Sunderland vs. Cardiff City, Swansea Town vs. Preston North End, as well as other Fourth Division battles such as Barrow vs. Chester, Hartlepools vs. Crewe Alexandra and Oxford United vs. Workington. A rich array of spoils indeed! Finally, the ‘Fixtures & Results’ are laid out in all their glory(and sometimes not so!) on the back page; the standout opposition to be found here were Manchester City, who had visited us in a League Cup tie back in October when they had defeated us by two goals to one. Our FA Cup adventure had been a rather short-lived affair, ending away in West London when Queens Park Rangers had pinched a 3-2 win at the White City. This particular game ended 1-1 and 5,399 saw that man Bonson notch our goal and his 14th of the season. By late May, in all competitions including Welsh Cup, Joe had bagged 31 while Ralph Hunt had pilfered 37! It’s little wonder older fans still talk about that partnership!
Sadly, despite Hunt getting a goal in the first leg of the Welsh Cup final at Borough United in the May to leave us just 1-2 down, neither could frustratingly find another pair of goals in the second leg at home which ended in a shock 0-0, thus denying us a shot of European football at the expense of the village minnows! The season was also extended deep into the cricket season due to the notorious big freeze of that winter; in fact, we played no League matches whatsoever between December 22nd and 27th February, and despite our astonishing strike force, we somehow ended up in a disappointing 20th position. Teams (as printed): County: Len Weare, John Bird, Dai Thomas, David Williams, Graham Rathbone, John Rowland, Colin Hudson, Bill Herrity, Joe Bonson, Ralph Hunt, Granville Smith. Mansfield: Treherne, Toon, Humble, S. Chapman, Phillips, Morris, Askey, I. Hall, Wagstaff, R. Chapman, Weir.

300,0 At eBay, we believe the heart of football is community. It’s where it all started. When the butchers and the bakers, the shipbuilders and the ironmongers, all came together to form the humble origins of our beloved clubs. And today, these same people, the shop owners, the tradesmen, and the small businesses, continue to be the beating heart of our communities.

Exiles Commu A little bit about me…
My name is Logan Busuttil, I was given the role as the co-ordinator of the Exiles Community Corner for this season. Prior to this, I have done a fair bit of volunteering for the club & the Community. Back in 2016, I was the flag bearer at home games until the end of 2019. From the start of 2020, until March of the same year, I was volunteering with County in the Community on their matchday visit project. Unfortunately, this had to stop due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As well as volunteering on a matchday, I was also volunteering with County in the Community in their other programmes, such as their Afterschool sessions across Newport and the wider Gwent area, the Premier League Kicks Programme and the Premier League Primary Stars Programme. Throughout this time, I have been gaining experience and building relationships with the people who myself and the other staff members of County in the Community were delivering to. In February of 2020, I was offered a casual role by County in the Community, which I happily accepted.
What is the Exiles Community Corner? Officially, the Exiles Community Corner project is called the “Premier League Fans Fund”. This project is a commitment from the Premier League to fund projects and organisations that will improve the relationship between the clubs and their supporters. In this programme, the organisation that will keep the funding from the Premier League safe is the Football Foundation. The Football Foundation is a charity which is owned by the Premier League, the FA and the Government that helps communities like ours improve their local facilities through Football Grants.
What are our target groups this season? This season, we have been aiming to bring more underrepresented groups to Rodney Parade. These

groups are people with BAME backgrounds and Mental Health. Since the Exiles Community Corner sessions started on the 4th of September, we have had a number of BAME and Mental Health participants.
The project delivery before September 2021 Prior to starting the Exiles Community Corner project, we were building with our target groups both internally and externally. From an internal point of view, we decided to deliver sessions in Newport’s most multicultural area. One of the schools that we delivered at was St Michael’s Primary School. St Michael’s Primary School is within the Pillgwennlly area of Newport, so this really benefits the aims of the Exiles Community Corner. Also, throughout the Easter and Summer half terms, we were delivering Fit & Fed sessions at the Pill Millennium Centre. During these sessions, we were aiming to welcome more multi-cultural children to Sport. On the mental health side of the project, we deliver sessions every Thursday at the Play Football Newport centre on a Thursday afternoon in Bettws. Externally, we have assisted the EYST (Ethnic minorities Youth Support Team Wales) in delivering the inaugural ‘Newport Cohesion Cup’. This was a great opportunity to build relationships with the EYST and other organisations that also assisted in delivering this tournament such as Newport Live and the Gwent Police Diversion Team.
Exiles Community Corner activities Regardless of the weather, there are plenty of activities to take part in when attending the Exiles Community Corner. If the weather is dry, then we will have two football pitches set up. One pitch will be for the older children and the other will be for the toddlers and young children. As well as having pitches set up, we will also have a speed gun challenge set up for anyone to test their shooting and win some prizes. If the weather is wet, we will be delivering paper activities such as word searches in the marquee.

Walking Football
Throughout 2021 the County in the Community Walking Football programme has continued to expand with around 10 to 20 participants attending our Monday and Thursday sessions based at Llanwern High School. We have a fantastic group of people that continue to support our weekly sessions and as an organisation we are delighted to see the great friendships that have been developed over time. On Thursday 9th December 16 participants and 1 member of staff enjoyed a lovely meal together at the Greyhound Inn where memories of the past 12 months were shared which saw a lot of smiles on faces and was a great way to the end what has been a challenging
but thoroughly enjoyable year. County in the Community would like to wish all our Walking Football participants a happy new year and we look forward to an even better 2022.

View from the
boardroom A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Mansfield Town to this afternoon’s EFL League Two home fixture. We welcome club of the day Abercarn United Girls. A new up and coming girls football team for all ages and ability. It is run in association with Abercarn United boys and seniors. Our Charity of the Day is our friends from Newport Veterans Hub who are a social and support group which aims to bring military veterans out of isolation and give them a place to socialise and make new friends. They are located at Newport Stadium, Spytty (14:30-20:00 every Thursday). Find out more about the valuable work they do at www.newportveteranshub.org.uk. The Newport Veterans Hub are also assisting Newport County AFC with their submission of the Armed Forces Covenant which we hope to get signed at the end of this season. Great to have you with us for the game today! The match day shop was extremely popular last Saturday, and it will once again be open for supporters to visit before and after today’s game. The intention is to make this a regular feature on a match day. This was one of the recent observations made in
our EFL family Excellence feedback visit. In addition, supporters may well have seen our request asking for fans feedback around their match day experience. Again, this is part of our plan to address the observations made in the feedback we received. Both these additions are very timely as we have just made our submission to the Fan Engagement Index which is due to be published shortly. This weekend offers the opportunity to not only enjoy our game today but also the Dragons game tomorrow against Ulster as part of a joint initiative ticket offer with the Dragons. Tickets are on sale at the ticket office. The planning for pre-season is well underway. The Sporting Director, Manager and Club Secretary have been busy arranging the schedule including a venue for the pre-season training camp. As the plans emerge over the coming weeks and months, we will share the details with supporters. Good luck to the lads this afternoon. Thanks for your support as always. Stay safe everyone. Gavin

IN THE BEGINNING …
Football in Mansfield dates back over 160 years, with Field Mill now comfortably the oldest ground in the Football League. Originally owned by the Duke of Portland, the venue’s first match was reportedly staged in 1861, with the Duke renting the site to local cotton works side Mansfield Greenhaigh, who were known as ‘The brown paper parcellers’ due to the players’ habit of carrying their scarlet and black hooped playing kit in brown paper! By 1894, Greenhaigh merged with an earlier Mansfield Town to become Mansfield FC, though by the turn of the century Mansfield Amateurs replaced the by then defunct FC as Field Mill’s principal tenants. Amidst all this, the present club was formed almost unnoticed in 1897 as Mansfield Wesleyans, rebranding as Mansfield Town 13 years later as a signal of intent upon joining the Central Alliance. A fierce rivalry for local supremacy developed with Field Mill’s latest occupants, Mansfield Mechanics, who bitterly opposed their neighbours name change, and an FA Cup Second Qualifying Round match between the two clubs was a particularly feisty encounter. However, Town gradually usurped Mechanics as Mansfield’s premier club, with the latter’s demise confirmed upon the conclusion of World War One as they were ejected from Field Mill following failure to pay their rent. Town moved in and have stayed ever since.
HIGHLIGHTS
Now established as the town’s leading club, the 1920s were a golden era for this afternoon’s visitors, who began to draw sizeable crowds to Field Mill for Midland League encounters. They reached the Sixth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup twice in a row in the early 20s, and won the League twice, in 1924 and 1929, as well as finishing runners-up in 1925. Despite these efforts, the club failed to
W W W. N E W P O RT- CO U N T Y.CO. U K gain election to the Football League, though their achievements reached a national level in 1929 after they defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup before losing to First Division giants Arsenal 2-0 at Highbury in Round 4. The Football League prize eventually arrived in 1931, though was not well received in Newport as Mansfield replaced County in Division 3 (South),after the Ironsides were taken to court for running an illegal lottery.
try to play a bit of football for a League Two side. You cannot always be good with the ball. You have to find different ways of winning games. There has been no lack of effort or commitment. The supporters stuck with us. As long as they see a certain level of commitment and effort, they will stick with you, and they have done.’
Like County, Stags have enjoyed one season of second tier football, with Peter Morris’ Mansfield finishing 21st in 1978, 31 years after Tom Bromilow’s County finished a place lower. The 1976-77 campaign was arguably the greatest in the club’s history as they finished three points ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion to secure the Third Division title and the likes of goalkeeper Rod Arnold, defenders Kevin Bird and Colin Foster, and striker Ernie Moss became Stags’ legends.
Town’s ‘Stagsnet’ fans forum is generally in confident mood ahead of this afternoon’s game. Thanks to the posters mentioned. ‘With Newport away, Bradford away, Exeter home and Tranmere away all coming up, it is going to a very hard run that will show where this squad is at.’ It is not just County fans anticipating a very tough run of games, as ‘Sedgwick’ proves. ‘A point is decent, and we move on to Newport. I wanted seven points from the four games, from and including Colchester, so I am happy.’ County fands will be hoping that ‘NEStag’ reaches the magic seven with a win at Leyton Orient in three days’ time! ‘Stags have bizarrely played four more home games than away games; to even this out, seven of the next 10 games are away.’ ‘KirkbyStag2’ on the home/away divide which has affected County in the opposite way. ‘The turnaround has been near on miraculous. The team have gone from rabbit in the headlights to oozing swagger. I don’t know how Nigel Clough has done it, but it is mighty impressive. Probably a multitude of reasons. The goal has to be autos now. Only three points off them. Brilliant!’ ‘arsene wenger’s coat’ is delighted with the Town revival.d
Mansfield waited another 36 years for their next league title, though the prize was sweet as their 2012-13 Conference championship ended five years of non-league hurt. Remarkably, Paul Cox’s side won 20 of their final 24 games, including a club record 12 successive victories, to secure their Football League return. Their final defeat prior to that run came at Rodney Parade against County, who also of course had cause for celebrations a few months later.
DON’T MENTION •
•
hesterfield! Various supporters’ surveys see Stags and Spireites C fans name the other as their chief nemesis. The towns are just 10 miles apart and, following the 1984-85 miners’ strike, the rivalry took on a political tone, as the Derbyshire miners remained on strike until the end while their Nottinghmanshire counterparts returned to work. These days, the rivalry owes more to geography than politics, as national journalist Ivan Speck, who attended a recent derby, confirmed: ‘there was rivalry, an intense burning rivalry, yet the political and social edges have come off it a tad. Geographical location has overtaken bitterness and blame as the main emotion underscoring the occasion.’ he 2007-08 campaign, as Mansfield’s proud 77-year reign T in the Football League came to an end with relegation to the Conference. Billy Deardon’s Stags never really recovered from losing eight of their opening 10 games, though did enjoy a run to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, with two BBC TV appearances against Harrogate Railway Athletic and Middlesbrough. Joining them in the bottom two that year were Wrexham, who are hoping that a touch of Hollywood will lead to their return in a few months.
STAGS’ TODAY
Form team After a run of five draws and seven defeats between August and October, even the most optimistic Town fans could not have envisaged the current transformation as Nigel Clough’s Stags hunt down an automatic promotion spot. An eight-game winning run ended with a goalless draw at Harrogate Town at the start of the month, since when Mansfield have beaten Colchester United at the One Call Stadium and drawn at Bristol Rovers seven days ago. Attacker turned central defender Oli Hawkins told iFollow Stags that team spirit is crucial to his side’s success: ‘Everyone is happy. Everyone is looking forward to coming in and training, and we are looking forward to the games. The way everything is run here is brilliant and that is the key to it. I am looking forward to each game to try and keep a clean sheet and defend as well as I can to become a better centre half. I am hoping I can keep playing well there and the team wins so we can get promoted.’

MIDFIELDER
NIGEL CLOUGH MANAGER.
In charge since November 2020, Nigel joined the Stags after spells in charge of Derby County, Sheffield United and two at Burton Albion. As a player he made more than 300 league appearances for Nottingham Forest, then managed by his father Brian, and became the second highest scorer in Forest’s history before signing for Liverpool in 1993. He moved on to Manchester City and also won 14 caps for England. Nigel’s managerial career started with non-league Burton in 1998, while he was still playing, and he steered them from the Northern Premier to the top of the Conference. He left just before their promotion to the EFL, taking over at
Derby County in 2009. He joined Sheffield United in 2013 and in his first season lifted them from the League One relegation zone to seventh at the end of the campaign. He also took the Blades to FA Cup and League Cup semi-finals. Nigel returned to Burton in 2015 and stayed four years, guiding the Brewers to a League Cup semi and to the Championship for the first time in their history. This season the Stags have recovered from a poor start to be serious contenders for automatic promotion, with January’s transfers arguably completing the strongest squad in the division on paper.
