JAMES ROWBERRY I would like to begin by welcoming you all back to Rodney Parade for the third instalment of our run of five continuous home games.

It’s not often you have three home games in a row, let alone knowing you have another two still to come! I was pleased following last week’s result to Mansfield and felt that the boys showed fantastic character and attitude to keep going and eventually force the equaliser. The start of the week then saw us say goodbye to Wayne Hatswell who moves on to pursue a different challenge elsewhere. I’d like to place on record my thanks to Hats for his hard work and he moves on from Newport County with the best wishes of us all following his years of service to the club. On that front, I would like to welcome Carl Serrant who I’m delighted joined the club this week as my new Assistant Manager. I’m happy to have Carl on board and think he’s a great addition to my staff. I’m sure you’ll all give him a warm welcome today for his first fixture. Today will be another tough game against a strong opponent who have had a good season so far, seeing them sit currently in 2nd. I want to welcome Micky Mellon, the technical staff, directors, players and supporters from Tranmere Rovers and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade. We must make sure we are right in our approach, in the build-up and even more so once the first whistle goes. I am hoping that the atmosphere at Rodney Parade is a vociferous one and hopefully we can give you a performance that matches the fantastic support you’ve given recently. Get behind the boys and enjoy the game. James

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler

Today we travel back TO the wonderful 1979-80 season with a look at the programme issued for Tranmere Rovers’ visit to Somerton Park on Saturday 13th October…

Welsh international in the making, Steve Lowndes is seen on the cover of the 20p priced ‘Amber Note’ and he’sgetting in a cross with Halifax Town defender Geoff Hutt in close attendance. This was from the previous Saturday’s 1-2 away defeat in deepest Yorkshire. Indeed, on page two there is another snap from that match, featuring Tommy Tynan, that could easily have been a Lowry painting with its matchstick-like figures huddling beneath a rickety, small stand;complete with a mill chimney that Fred Dibnah would have loved hogging the rollinghilled backdrop! In ‘Amber Talk,’boss Len Ashurst is in upbeat mood as we have bounced back in tremendous style from that Shay setback by dispatching Aldershot 4-2 on the following Tuesday at home. In fact, Len reckons the performance was “The best since I have been at the club. ” Len also notes the “Lovely p l a y i n g s u r fa c e” a n d t h e “Tremendous response from the crowd the whole match” whilst describing the delighted Amber Army as “Vociferous. ” He also mentions a young lad in John Aldridge, whomhe described as “A relative newcomer to the side,” and goes onto add that he did himself proud with his first two

County goals. Whatever happened to that chap Aldridge, I wonder?! Incidentally, Len also confesses that Tranmere were in fact “One of the other teams interested” in John before we snaffled him up from South Liverpool FC. The gafferwas positively purring over his choice of forwards as he also had Tynan, Howard Goddard and a young Mick Bruton at his disposal, and also reminds spectators that a “Full first team” would play against a “Gwent XI” at Raglan the next day in aid of local community amenities. Londoner John King was in charge of our Wirral friends at the time, and I suppose the standout name in their side was Mark Palios, who of course is now Chairman at Prenton Park af ter a highprofile career in football administration. A look at their previous visit makes for sorrowful reading for County fans. In a match we have actually covered in

this column before, Rovers claimed an embarrassing (for us) 1-5 win in which Ronnie Moore bagged four and Mr. Chairman himself, Palios grabbed the other! For the record, John Parsons netted our sorry strike. In Richard Shepherd’s ‘Inside Somerton’ we are treated to several snippets, and Richard noted that no County player had yet netted a hat-trick to claim the sponsored Lex Mead inducement of £200. The Newport-based car motor distributors had put up the reward which, surprise surprise, was won in the November by John Aldridge when he got three of our five at Stockport County in a 5-1 Fridaynightamber demolition. Richard also reports the Halifax boss tipping County for promotion, despite his team beating us; George Kirby had called us a “Class side” in their match-day programme. There was news also of a youth team that had been set up by the club in NorthWest Gwent, called Somerton Youth, and the lads had recently beaten Ross Town Youth 5-1 under the watchful eye of former managerBilly Lucas, who, as we know, had a rather good eye for a promising youngster. Following several pages of the “On Target” insert, the 1979 version the Football League Review mag, we arrive at a profile on a central defender; namely the Barrow-born Grant Davies, who was in fact celebrating his 20th birthday on this very day. Grant, a former Preston apprentice whose father was born in Machen, joined County initially on trial in July 1978 and had been a regular pretty much since marking Alan Curtis of Swansea City in his debut a month later. Indeed, the solid stopper had only missed eight of the 57 league and cup matches we had played the previous season, and, up to this point in the season was an everpresent alongside our trusty

captain Keith Oakes. Grant mentions how well he’s settled in the town and, to the best of my knowledge, still lives in Newport as many fans will remember he served Gwent Police for many yearswith distinction after he retired from professional football. Moving on a few pages and we happen across‘Nostalgia Spot’where our 3-0 win over Tranmere from March 1959 is covered; a match that was their first visit to Newport. Our goals were scored by Barrie Meyer (who went onto become a Cricket testmatch umpire), John Rowland and Bryn Jones.4,993 feasted on the Monday night fodder. Another feature on an actionpacked page 13 was ‘The Media,’ where we looked at the busy afternoon the local reporters had filing their copy for the muchloved (and much missed) regional football editions. As the article explains, it’s a “Long afternoon” for the scribes who must dictate several hundred words via a crackling telephone line, making sure they have the right scorers for instance. The curse of the local hack was most definitely a late game-changing goal! Towards the rear of the issue that won that season’s divisional award, we have all the facts and stats of the campaignthus far and it’s worth noting that this fe l l a A l d r i d g e, who was known to County fans as “Ollie,” had also notched 14 t i m es a l re a d y i n o u r We l s h League reserve team as well as that opening brace of goals in professional football against the Shots. So, a repeat of the score from this fixture would certainly do nicely this

afternoon please, footballing gods, as we took the points with a comfortable 2-0 win. Aldridge got the first and Lowndes slid in the second as County cemented their place in the top 10. Of course, we ended the season in third place to clinch promotion for the first time since the 1938/39 season and bagged the Welsh FA Cup to boot. Rovers ended in 15th place. Teams: County:Gary Plumley, Richard Walden, John Relish, Grant Davies, Keith Oakes, Neil Bailey, Nigel Vaughan, Steve Lowndes, Howard Goddard, John Aldridge, Kevin Moore. Sub:Tommy Tynan. Tranmere (As printed):Dick Johnson, Ray Mathias, Eddie Flood, John Bramhall, Elfyn Edwards, Clive Evans, Tommy O’Neil, Steve Craven, John Kerr, Jim Lumby, Steve Peplow. Attendance: 4,052.

boardroom A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Tranmere Rovers to this afternoon’s EFL League Two home fixture. Our club of the day are Malpas Court Primary school who are no strangers to Rodney Parade, and we would like to welcome them back to cheer on the team and take part in some special activities undertaken by County in the Community. Our Charity of the Day is Made a Mark who are a charity who help families following a bereavement. They provide memory boxes and other supporting materials to hospitals and hospices, which can be given to children and families following a loss. Enjoy your day! It has been a busy week with the departure of Wayne Hatswell and the arrival of our new assistant manager Carl Serrant. Our thanks to Wayne for his hard work over many years at the club and best wishes for the future. A warm welcome to Carl. Carl has worked with James for a number of years at Cardiff City. He comes with valuable experience gained from a number of clubs including QPR, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United. Our thanks to Ken Choo (Cardiff City CEO) for his cooperation in allowing Carl to join us in a seamless

manner. I am sure the Amber Army will give Carl a warm welcome at this afternoon’s game. Wednesday also saw the first team welcome our junior members to the first open training session postCovid. It was great to see so many young exiles fans watching the team going through their paces. It has been a long time since we were able to hold such a session and we will look to hold another before the season concludes, all things being equal! Despite the inclement weather the pitch has remained in fantastic condition. Credit to Jon Raymond and his team for all the hard work that has kept the pitch in such pristine shape. Last week Mansfield’s Directors were very complimentary about it - it is quite incredible if you think back to a year ago when it was a very difficult playing surface. Well done to the Rodney Parade ground staff. Good luck to the lads this afternoon. Thanks for your continued support. Gavin

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

Academyupdate MEET THE TEAM

As part of the #EFLYouthDevelopmentWeek we wanted to use the opportunity to share our current team that are working at the Academy, helping to deliver the next generation of professional footballers for our 1st Team at Newport County AFC Academy:

This years Under 18 Squad have had an eventful 1st half the season gaining 19 points from their 18 games. With impressive results away at Forest Green Rovers, Portsmouth and Cheltenham. As well as progression in the FA Youth Cup Beating Torquay at home and making the Quarter Finals of the EFL Youth Alliance Cup beating Bristol Rovers away to Progress in that competition. Despite the positives, losses away at Leyton Orient in the youth cup and at home to Exeter ended our progression in both cup competitions. In Danny Elliott’s 1st season back with the youth team after spending the previous two seasons as part of Michael Flynns back room team, its been a huge learning curve for both the young scholars and the new PDP staff. “Its been a great experience so far understanding these young players strengths and where we can improve them as players. But getting to know these lads as young men has been very interesting understanding

their backgrounds and what motivates them to become professionals has been a good experience”. Danny Elliott Many of the 2nd and 3rd year players as well as some of the 1st years have gained valuable experiences this season having been around the senior first team group either within the training environment or by being involved in EFL trophy or league fixtures. This has been a huge positive for the academy having seen Harrison Bright and Iestyn Evans make their debuts for the club and Aneurin Livermore being the first scholar in the past 5 years to feature for the club in league action, with 6 appearances so far this season. The interest and support that the manager has already shown in setting his standards and expectations to the group, emphasises the importance in how he views the Academy and will only benefit the players as they continue to develop at the club. The huge positives the Academy players have experienced this season only goes to underline the football clubs commitment to promoting our from within. This being emphasised by implementation of the development team games this season in which the 1st team staff and Academy staff have worked side by side to ensure the players are getting the best support and opportunities available to them. Having our scholars play alongside our seasoned pros against top opposition will only propel their development and benefit our club in the long term. Going into the youth teams last 9 games of the season, the young Exiles are hoping for a strong finish to the season with games away at Sutton United, FGR, Luton Town and Leyton Orient. Whilst also hosting Cheltenham, Bristol Rovers, Swindon aswell as Northampton and Mk Dons.

The charity was founded in 2018 in memory of Mark Knapp, a much-loved husband and father of 2 young children, who died very suddenly and unexpectedly. Mark made such a positive impact on so many lives that we felt driven to set up this charity to honour his memory and to improve support for those so will follow in our footsteps. Made a Mark is registered with the Charity Commission in England and Wales and is a no-salary charity, run solely by volunteers for the public benefit. Our experience Whilst the care that Mark received in hospital was excellent, we were left feeling that the support for the children in that setting simply wasn’t there. It really was difficult to know what to do, where to turn to and how best to talk to the children about what had happened. From talking to others, it became clear that our experience was not an isolated one. We hope that our experiences of navigating the stormy waters of grief together can help others who find themselves walking this challenging path. Our aim The charity is a way for us to help other families take opportunities that were missed for us, by providing memory boxes and supporting materials to acute hospitals and hospices, which can be given to children and their families following a loss. 2 0 | O F F I C I A L M ATC H DAY P R O G R A M M E

Exiles Commu County in the Community - Female Premier League Kicks Sessions has been a project on the rise with the aim of getting more females involved in football and sports. We currently deliver these sessions at two Newport High Schools, these are Llanwern & John Frost High Schools. We host the sessions once a week after school on both sites. The sessions are mostly football based but we also cover other sports, just to mix it up for the females and introduce them to other sports, the sessions are fun and engaging. We also encourage participants to come and take part and enjoy themselves. Two years ago at John Frost we were engaging 10-15 females at the session, now we are engaging 30-40 females varying from year 7 all the way to year 11, so the session is constantly growing, we

26 | O F F I C I A L M ATC H DAY P R O G R A M M E

are always looking to involve more females in football and sport. The Llanwern High School session is still growing with numbers going from between 10-20 each session but even with the lower numbers, the females that come really enjoy the session so much that they have even gone and joined local football teams. Across both schools we have engaged with over 50 females attending both sessions, this is ever growing, we are attracting new participants each year and most importantly still engaging with the previous participants too. If you would like to find out what days and times we deliver our Female Premier Kicks sessions, please contact our Head of the Female Engagement & Premier League Kicks Assistant coordinator, Mo Jallow, via mo.jallow@ countyinthecommunity.co.uk

This afternoon’s visitors came into being in 1884 when the twoyear-old Belmont Cricket Club, based in the then large village of Tranmere, decided to form a football section. The following year, local entrepreneur and club president, James Hannay McGaul, instigated the name change to Tranmere Rovers toprovide greater identity and attract wider support. With around 35,000 inhabitants, Tranmere was then the second most populous settlement on the Wirral although it was soon to become absorbed into the County Borough of Birkenhead. The upwardly mobile Mr McGaul became mayor of Birkenhead in 1908 andwasclub president when Rovers became a limited company four years later, winning promotion to the Lancashire Combination First Division. One of his last acts in charge was to oversee the move to their current Prenton Park home, in Birkenhead itself, while insisting the retention of the Tranmere name.

Rovers’ only major title came in the 1937-38 season under manager and former film extra Jim Knowles when they won the Third Division North championship, finishing two points ahead of Doncaster Rovers. Unfortunately, their first spell in the second tier of

W W W. N E W P O RT- CO U N T Y.CO. U K English football lasted just one campaign as they finished 14 points adrift of second from bottom Norwich City and swapped places with promoted Newport County in the Football League pyramid. Whites’ next stint in the second tier lasted 10 yearsand was an altogether happier time following their 1-0 Wembley play-off final win over neighbours Bolton Wanderers in 1991. Shortly afterwards, former County hero John Aldridge returned to Merseysidefrom Real Sociedad and his goals helped Tranmere to the play-offs for three successive years from 1993, only to fall agonisingly short of the promised land of the FA Premier League. ‘Ollie’, or ‘Aldo’ as Rovers fans knew him, was manager from 1996 to 2001 and led the club to the League Cup Final and the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup in the 1999-2000 campaign. Few managers have made the impact at Prenton Park as legendary boss from the 1960s, Dave Russell. Taking charge in 1961, one of his early moves was to change the traditional playing kit of blue shirts and white shorts to all white, explaining ‘as Liverpool are red and Everton are blue, then Tranmere should be white.’The Dundee born former Bury manager also developed a successful youth policy, which included future Derby County title winner and England central defender Roy McFarland among its graduates. In 1967, he guided Tranmere back to Division 3 and led them to Round 5 of the FA Cup for the first time, becoming general manager in 1969, a position he held for nine years. A hospitality suite at the modern Prenton Park is named in honour of the former manager who died in Birkenhead in 2000 at the age of 86.

he 1980s. It may have been the decade of New Wave, big hair T and punk rock but for Tranmere Rovers it was a time to forget! Relegated to the fourth tier in 1979, Whites were beset by financial problems as crowds dropped below 2,000 on occasions. The club avoided insolvency through a series of friendly fixtures and a £200,000 loan from Wirral Council before eventually entering administration in 1987. This proved a turning point, with local businessman Peter Johnson becoming owner and manager John King leading a transformationfrom the lower reaches of the fourth tier to the threshold of the first.

much.As a player and a manager I have had eight promotions, so I really enjoy the challenge of trying to get promoted. Of course, we are aware of where we are at in the league, but we concentrate on us trying to get it right first. The gaps and the points between teams wouldnot really affect us because we wouldnot lose our focus on what is important. If you take your eye off your own performance to try and get results, then there is not much point anyway. We will get the right stuff right first.’

FANS’ VIEWS

A quick look at the ‘Total Tranmere’ forum ahead of this afternoon’s encounter, with thanks to the contributors named. ‘Mansfield are going up automatically with Forest Green and ourselves. Exeter, Northampton, Newport and Sutton in the playoffs with Newport winning them.’ We are sure that every supporter at Rodney Parade this afternoon would settle for the scenario suggested by ‘Tranmere Tinker’! ‘If we get to Wembley I will be there. Just feel we are not good enough to go up automatically. One point from a possible nine. We nominally lose 1-0 to Newport.’ The majority of supporters here would be happy if ‘PETE SF’ is proved right too. ‘The matches revert back to weekly in the main, giving us some breathing space, before difficult away trips to Newport and Northampton.’ ‘Aldo40’ looks ahead to forthcoming matches. ‘Credit to Newport, they are steady as ever, more impressive given they lost all their best players in the summer – I thought mid-table for them.’ ‘Uptonrover’ keeping an eye on events in South Wales.

THE COUNTY CONNECTION

he 2014-15season as Tranmere were relegatedfrom the Football T League after a 94-year-stay. They returned after three seasons away but suffered a more controversial relegation in 2019-20 as they were demoted from League One, a year after their play-off victory over County, on a points per games basis.

ROVERS’ TODAY

Mindset matters Captain Peter Clarke, who celebrated his 100th appearance for Whites earlier this month, believes that mindset is crucial as Tranmere approach the business end of the season. A late goal from former County loanee Jamie Proctor denied Rovers all three points against promotion rivals Port Vale seven days ago, though 39-year-old Clarke is convinced that his side will soon return to winning ways, telling local media: ‘We are in a fantastic situation, the last few wouldnot have been as we would have desired, but we are in a really, really good position. We have to maintain the mindset that we have had, we have to make sure that we are ready for the forthcoming games, and we have to remember the things that we have done well previously that have got us to this situation. We are going to do our very best and our utmost to make sure that these things happen, to gain positive results.’

MANAGER’S VIEW

Micky Mellon talking to ‘Sky Sports’recently on the task ahead. ‘Because of the experience we have as a football club, we know that the important thing is not to focus on the league table - it is to focus on your own performance, your own results and what it takes to get those results. We donot really look around too

MICKY MELLON MANAGER.

Micky returned to Rovers for a second stint as manager last summer having previously been in charge for almost four years from October 2016. He also had two spells as a player at Prenton Park. A native of Paisley, the 49-year-old spent his early career as a winger with Bristol City, Cork City and West Brom before linking up with Blackpool in 1994. He made 125 league appearances during three years with the Seasiders and later moved to Tranmere in a £300,000 deal and turned out 57 times in Division One. Two years at Burnley followed before Micky was back at Tranmere, making 115 league appearances between 2001 and 2004. He ended his playing career in non-league at Kidderminster Harriers, Witton Albion and Lancaster City. After coaching roles at Lancaster and with Burnley’s youth side, he took over at Fleetwood Town in September 2008, guiding them to two promotions

from Conference North to the EFL. He was then assistant to David Flitcroft at Barnsley and returned to management with Shrewsbury in League Two in May 2014. Micky secured promotion to League One with the Shrews in 2015 before succeeding Gary Brabin at Tranmere. He steered Rovers back to the EFL via the 2018 National League playoff final - despite them going down to 10 men after a minute - and a year later Rovers were again promoted when they beat County at Wembley. Their yo-yo spell continued when they were relegated in the curtailed 2019-20 campaign, after which Micky returned north for a year and guided Dundee United to ninth place in the Scottish top flight last season.
