JAMES ROWBERRY I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to Rodney Parade for today’s game. We have had a congested schedule as of late and it’s been good to have a full week to prepare ahead of today compared to the large amount of travel and midweek fixtures we’ve had recently. I want to thank all of fans who did make the journey up to Yorkshire last Saturday. The support was fantastic once again and I can only reaffirm how it means to myself, the players and the club that you consistently provide us with such great away support even on the furthest of trips. I felt that we did enough to win the game away at Bradford last Saturday but even coming away with a draw, I was satisfied with our performance and the aspects of our play which caused Bradford some real issues. The fact that we also kept a clean sheet was another pleasing aspect of our performance, especially as Bradford do certainly put you under pressure in every fixture at Valley Parade. Today will prove to be another competitive game, with Exeter providing a really stern test to our ambitions for this season as they currently sit 2nd in League 2 and looking to further their own progress towards their ambition of promotion this season. I want to welcome Matt Taylor, the technical staff, directors, players and supporters from Exeter City and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade. We now enter April and the final month of the season and whilst it can be easy to look ahead to what may come, the key message from myself to the players and everyone else is that we must be laser like in our focus on focusing on each game as they come. It may sound cliché, but it really is the way we must be. The next game is the only one you can affect in the moment, and we must put all our efforts into being the best we can be for each game and sole focus on each fixture is the only way to do that. I’ve already touched on the away support, but we are delighted to be back at Rodney Parade today and I hope that we can really pack put the stadium and we can once again have the same vehement support that really drives the boys on when they step out in front of you on a Saturday afternoon. Get behind the boys and enjoy the game. James O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 3
AMBER FROM THE ATTIC WITH CHRIS SHINGLER
We welcome Exeter City to Rodney Parade this afternoon for this crucial clash, and a repeat of the score from our encounter in April 1981 will be very welcome indeed to the majority here today, I’m sure!
I
t was an Easter Saturday fixture when the Grecians made the shorthop up the M5 and across the bridge and the much maligned(in these parts) former Liverpool and Swansea City forward, Alan Waddle was featured on the cover of the 25p priced‘Amber Note,’ seen heading home our first goal against Blackpool at Somerton in a recent fixture, a match in which we had won 3-1. In a very busy opening pair of pages, gaffer Len Ashurst is up first. Len was frustrated by the late postponement of our match at Hull City the previous week, and he felt the referee could have left the decision a little later than 1:30pm to give the pitch a chance of draining the “Few pools of water” that were laying upon it. I recall being in a pub near Boothferry Park enjoying a frothy ale or two when it flashed up on the Grandstand TV programme, in between the racing, that the match was off! The coach load of hardy supporters ended up getting our football fix at nearby non-league Goole Town who were entertaining Runcorn that afternoon, and the look on the bemused officials of the home club were a picture as 50-odd amber-and-black-clad Welshmen turned into the car park! Len also welcomes our former player Brian Godfrey who was then his opposite number at St James Park and noted their recent FA Cup 4-0 victory over Newcastle United in front of an excited 13,000 crowd. Mr. Ashurst signs off by congratulating captain Keith Oakes who had been named Match Weekly magazine’s “Matchmanof the Month” for March and was due to be presented with his award before this match.

Up next was ‘Inside Somerton’ and editor Richard Shepherd led with a sad story as he reported the death of former 1930s & 40s star Billy (WE) Owen, who, for many yearshad lived at the top of Somerton Lane near to our old ground. Billy had played for Exeter too and had been known as “W.E.” because, somewhat confusingly, we had another Billy Owen on our books at the time also, a former Manchester City “Billy” who was known as “W.M.”There was also news that with a ”Royal wedding on the horizon” a County XI would play a Hillview Crescent Ladies team to help raise money for a street party in honour of Charlie and Di’s forthcoming nuptials. Richard also notes that Steve Lowndes’ recordbreaking run of 160 consecutive
W W W. N E W P O RT- C O U N T Y. C O. U K
games had come to an end when he was absent from our team who had faced Walsall on April 6th. Steve’s three-year run had started on the 2ndof September in a match at League new boys Wigan in 1978. A two-page look at Exeter is the next slice of eye fodder and, as mentioned, Brian Godfrey, a former record signing of ours (£10,000 from Bristol Rovers) was in charge. Brian had a few players of note at his disposal including goalkeeper Len Bond, a £12,000 signing from Brentford, former Chelsea man John Sparrow, midfielder Peter Hatch as well as forwards Tony Kellow and Ray Pratt, an ex-Merthyr fellow. Martyn and Peter Rogers are also in the squad, uncle& father respectively to our midfielder of more recent times, Scott. Andy White, our late 1960s to mid-70s winger is featured in ‘Look Back in Amber’as he was one of our scorers in a fine2-1 win at Exeter in a November 1975 FA Cup First Round clash. Newport-born Andy had joined his home-town club in the summer of ’69 (there’s surely a song in there somewhere?!) from Welsh League outfit Caerleon and went onto play nearly 300 league and cup games for the Ironsides. For the record, Wynne Hooper got the other goal with Bobby Hodge netting a late consolation for the home club. The current player featured in this issue was Steve Warriner, our Merseysidebred utility player who was in his third season with us. He had suffered his fair share of injuries and when not crocked, he found it hard to get a regular place in our successful side. Steve, who livedat the time in Caerleon with his wife Sharon, had made 37 appearances up to this point, scoring twice. He had been playing regularly at right-back for our Welsh League (reserve) team and had been grateful for some help from other first-team squad members such as Howard Goddard, Ray Bishop and Waddle in recent times. Indeed, even John Aldridge had netted in in the last match they had played, a 3-0 home win over Briton Ferry. Exeter headed to Wales in 9th spot on that spring afternoon,
while we hovered precariously over the dotted relegation line in 20thplace, so this was a vital two points with just five matches to play following this one. Tommy Tynan grabbed our first goal with Waddle adding the second, while 5,231 happily forwent a few hours of chocolate egg scoffing. Goal machine Tony Kellow, who of course had a spell with us in the mid-80s, scored City’s goal from the spot; his 30th of the season and sixth penalty. By the close of play in May, a resurgent Countyfinished the season in 12th spot, exactly halfway, with the Grecians just one place ahead in 11th. County: Mark Kendall, Richard Walden, John Relish, Grant Davies, Keith Oakes, Neil Bailey, Nigel Vaughan, Tommy Tynan, Alan Waddle, John Aldridge (Ray Bishop), Kevin Moore. Exeter City printed XI:Steve Nute, Martyn Rogers, John Sparrow, Dick Forbes, Lee Roberts, Phil Roberts, Ian Pearson, Ray Pratt, Tony Kellow, John Delve, Peter Hatch.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

BOARDROOM A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Exeter City for this afternoon’s EFL League Two home fixture. Our club of the day is Newport Corinthians (Corries) who offer opportunities for boys and girls junior grassroots football and have a number of teams that play in the Gwent County and Newport Junior Leagues. You can find more at their Twitter site: Newport Corinthians (@NptCorries) / Twitter In addition, our charity of the day is My Discombobulated Brain. Well known to the club, this charity aims to tackle the stigma associated with mental health headon while offering a source of support and education to those who are affected by these issues. The charity was born from the experience of what it was like to watch someone you love, and for you personally, go through mental health issues including the stigma that goes alongside it. More can be found about their important work at www.mydiscombobulatedbrain. com. Welcome to both and hope you have a great day with us. We are also joined today by a number of our fans who are holding a bucket collection for Ukraine. All monies raised will be donated to a fundraising effort that has been ongoing within the Czech Republic. James Ward, who used to be in our Academy and is the son of Director Kevin Ward, has been supporting Ukrainian refugees who have been displaced and travelled to the Czech Republic to escape the war.
James has written in today’s programme, and we hope today’s collection will add to the great work he and his wife are undertaking for the people of Ukraine. Thanks in advance to everyone for their generosity, to the lads who are undertaking the collection, and of course to James and his wife. Thank you to all those that travelled to Bradford last weekend. After the game Darren Kelly, Paul Marks and myself were invited by the Bangla Bantums to visit their community centre close to the ground. They have developed a close relationship with our Exiles Together and we were delighted to go and meet the group who shared some of the work they are undertaking within their community. It was a privilege to go and meet the community again who came to visit us at Rodney Parade early in the season. It’s a great example of how football is for everyone! This week saw us table our accounts for the year ending 30th June 2021, and these delivered a modest but acceptable operating profit of £25.9k. This was the season where we played all our games behind closed doors. Despite this the support we received from the fans was superb and helped navigate through this particularly turbulent period. On behalf of the Board, our thanks to everyone! Good luck to the lads this afternoon and thank you for the continued support. Gavin

ACADEMYUPDATE The Smile Council and Supermarket chain ASDA combined to donate £1,000 to the Newport County Academy side to purchase equipment for the Young Exiles. The cheque was presented to the Academy ahead of kick-off on Friday night. ASDA donated £500 of the £1000 Cheque because of a Community’s draw they held within the store which the Smile Council won. The Smile Council have raised around £3500 over the years to help support the Newport County Academy and pledge they will do so for many years to come. They would also like to thank all County supporters that support the club away from home as “If it wasn’t for our great away supporters that travel away with us all around the country then we wouldn’t be able to raise this money, so many thanks from the Smile Council Committee members for their continued support.” On the donation, Academy Manager Damien Broad said: “From myself and all involved with the Academy we would like to pass on our thanks to Chris, Asda and all the members and contributors to the Smile Council. “Their efforts to raise money for the Academy every year is greatly appreciated and will go into supporting the players development by purchasing new equipment. We were delighted you could all join us at Friday night’s game.“

UKRAINE FUNDRAISING James Ward
Newport County AFC supporter and former Academy player James Ward has raised more than £23,000 in a month to help refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. James and his wife Liv both teach at primary schools in Prague and have lived and worked in the Czech capital for six years. With Prague just 360 miles from the Ukrainian border (less than last weekend’s round trip to Bradford), it has been one of the key cities for receiving refugees. Around 270,000 - almost all women and children - have arrived in the city since the Russian invasion began. James and Liv, both 28, were born and went to school in Newport and decided to do what they could to help after visiting a refugee centre in the city. They expected to raise a few hundred pounds, and have been amazed by how much friends, family and contacts have donated - both at home in Wales and in Prague. “It’s incredible and we can’t say how thankful
we are,” said James. “We’ve been able to work with local charities here in Prague, and also to provide money and equipment to refugees ourselves, meaning people arriving here are getting immediate and direct help. We’ve bought food, water, nappies, sanitary products, baby food and other essentials and distributed them to refugee centres and directly to people in need.” “We’ve also bought beds, towels, fresh food and vegetables, and toys for children; and we have bought medical supplies and sent them to Poland and Ukraine.” James said: “We are incredibly grateful to County for organising today’s bucket collection. Every penny raised will go directly to refugees here in Prague, so thank you in advance to fans for their generosity today.”
If you’d like to help James & Liv’s work with refugees in Prague, please contact James’ dad Kevin by email kevin@kevinwardmedia.com O F F I C I A L M AT C H DAY P R O G R A M M E | 2 1

S' TRUST?
The Newport County AFC Supporters' Trust is one of more than 140 Supporters' Trusts that exist under the umbrella of Supporters' Direct, a national body that provides assistance to supporters "who wish to play a responsible part in the life of the football club they support". The Trust was originally formed in 2001 and took a controlling stake in the football club in October 2015 following a community share issue which saw County supporters raise a magnificent £236,000 in just a month. Since then, Newport County AFC has been a supporter-owned, community-based club. The primary purpose of the Trust is to provide funding to the club. Our aim is to donate at least £100,000 a season to the club. As well as being owners of an EFL club, Trust members receive a range of benefits depending on their membership tier. All members have guaranteed priority tickets for cup matches. More details about the Trust can be found on our website: www.ncafctrust.org
HOW CAN YOU
PTHETR
T?
There are a variety of ways in which County supporters can help the Trust. BECOME A MEMBER: Becoming a Trust member guarantees you a range of benefits and helps the Trust donate more money to the club. Our aim is to donate £100,000 a season to help the manager.
The membership packages are as follows... Bronze: £5 a month; Silver: £10 a month; Gold: £20 a month; Platinum: £50+ a month. Corporate membership is available at £1,000 a year or £600 for six months. More details here: www.ncafctrust.org/join EASYFUNDRAISING: Join eosyfundroising and you can collect free donations for theTrust (and therefore the Club) every time you buy something online. It won't cost you a penny extra. Just start your online shopping first at www.eosyfundraising.org.uk/causes/ncafctrus t/, then shop as normal. Retailers will then make a small donation to say 'thank you'. There are more than 3,200 retailers to choose from and so far this scheme hos raised almost £18,500 for the Trust.
The Board of the Supporters' Trust currently consists of eight elected directors and two coopted directors. As the Trust is the majority shareholder in the club, all Trust directors ore also registered with the Football League as directors of the club having passed the EFL's Owners and Directors Test.
VOLUNTEER: The Trust and the Club appreciates the many outstanding volunteers who give up their time to help in a variety of ways. If you have the time and skills you think could benefit the club, then please email info@ncafctrust.org
Your Trust/Club elected directors are: Gavin Foxall, Shaun Johnson, Mike Everett, Joe Crocker, Colin Faulkner, Bob Herrin, Paul Marks and Kevin Ward. The two co-opted directors are Mark Crook and Peter Madigan.

IN THE BEGINNING …
There is some debate as to the connection between Exeter City and St Sidwell’s United, though football historian Aidan Hamilton shed some light on the mystery in his 2014 book, ‘Have you ever played Brazil? The Story of Exeter City’s 1914 tour of South America’. The author unearths the 31 August 1904 edition of ‘The Devon Evening Express’, which reports that Saints, formed in 1901,‘decided to take the title of “Exeter City”, a decidedly more suitable name for this strong combination.’ The same newspaper refers to St Sidwell’s as ‘the premier club in Exeter’ a year earlier, eclipsing the previously pre-eminent St James Park-based Exeter United, of which little was heard following a 3-0 defeat by Saints in 1902.The newly renamedCity immediately moved into St James Park, where St Sidwell’s had trained since August 1903, and attracted a crowd of over 600 for their ‘first’ match, a 2-1 victory over the 110th battery of the Royal Field Artillery in the East Devon League.
HIGHLIGHTS
In 1908, City replaced Tottenham Hotspur in the Southern League and six years later replaced Spurs again as England’s representative on an historic tour of South America, playing eight matches against teams from Argentina and Brazil, finishing off the trip with a feisty 2-0 defeat to Brasileiros. Two City players, Jimmy Lagan and Jack Fort, walked off in protest at the distinctly un-Samba like tactics of the Brazilians. Just two months later, seven of the Brasileiros players represented Brazil in their first-ever international, a 1-0 victory over Argentina. City’s best-ever season is their second-place finish in Division 3 (South) in 1932-33. Unfortunately, the runners-up spot was not enough to secure a shot at second tier football in a ‘one up’ era, though the early 1930s were a golden era for ‘The Grecians, who, under the management of Northern Ireland born Billy McDevitt, reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup in 1930, before losing 4-2 to Sunderland in a St James Park replay. Exeterreached the last
W W W. N E W P O RT- C O U N T Y. C O. U K eight in 1981 too, succumbing 2-0 toeventual winners Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, as goals from Graham Roberts and Paul Miller broke Grecian hearts and set up Spurs for the ‘Ricky Villa Final’ two months later.
DON’T MENTION
•G reen! It may be best to whisper it around Devonian visitors, but Grecians actually wore various combinations of green and white, before trialing red and white stripes in November 1910 following a poor start to the 1910-11 campaign. The trial was successful as, after an initial 0-0 draw, City won all five December fixtures and the switch became permanent. • The 2002-03campaign, which saw Grecians relegated from the Football League after an 82-year spell. Stabilty was in short supply at St James Park, with four managers, including future County boss John Cornforth, all failing to steer the City ship to safety. At one point, legendary former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne was linked to the Exeter hot-seat, as co-chairman Uri Geller (of spoon bending fame) introduced the likes of global pop icon, Michael Jackson, singer Patti Boulaye, magician David Blaine and ‘Darth Vader’ David Prowse to the club, with the latter joining Geller, and briefly Jackson, on the club board. However, all had departed prior to City’s relegation. These days, the most famous face at St James Park is season ticket holder Ade Edmondson, 65, of ‘The Young Ones’ fame, though Coldplay’s Chris Martin, 45, who was born locally, sends the occasional message of support.
FANS’ VIEWS
A look at ‘The Word on Well Street’, Grecians’ fans’ forum ahead of today’s clash, with thanks to the contributors named. ‘Got a good feeling about this game. Newport with a loss and a draw in their last two games have massive pressure on them and even a draw against us will see them probably slide out of the top seven. They will have to attack thus leaving space for us to counter attack and we will come away with a 2-1 win. Personally, I think Tranmere and Newport will drop out of the play offs, replaced by Swindon and Mansfield. ‘SaintJames’ clearly in confident mood! ‘It’s frustrating because, like at Sutton, there are still plenty of places available in the home end but, for whatever reason, Newport donot, or cannot, increase the away allocation.’ While ‘SEA Grecian’ focuses on ground arrangements at RP. ‘But Newport’s away allocation isnot much different from ours, and the rest of the ground will be pretty full so we can’t complain about that.’ While ‘denzel’ sees it from a home viewpoint. ‘Anyone with spare tickets? Son and I will be in Newport as I am picking him up from uni in Cardiff that morning and we are even dropping off a friend of his who has a ticket! Was surprised by it selling out in a day- we had it on the calendar from the moment the fixture list was out.’ ‘bootesful’ hoping to acquire a couple of tickets. ‘2/4/1956, Exeter 2 Newport 0, a repeat 66 years later would fit the bill.’ ‘david61’ with a blast from the past.
GRECIANS TODAY Midfield options
Last weekend’s 2-1 home victory over relegation threatened Stevenage means it is just one defeat in 16 games for the inform Grecians, who were indebted to a Sam Stubbs brace to end any hopes of a dream start for new Boro boss Steve Evans. Like County, City have had to overcome a few injury problems in recent games and were without midfield trio Harry Kite, Kyle Taylor and the suspended Nigel Atangana for the St James Park win. The latter returns for the marathon trek to Carlisle United next weekend, though Kite is still a few weeks away from fitness following a groin injury and Taylor remains sidelined till 2023 with a cruciate ligament problem. On a positive note, French born Timothée Dieng, who has 12 goals this term, came off the bench last weekend following a hamstring problem, and Callum Rowe returned from a loan spell with Bath City to earn the man of the match award and the praise of his manager Matt Taylor: ‘He is not a find, but a great option to have on the back of injuries and suspension and it is a testament that he can play 90 minutes on the back of his disjointed season and on the back of the way he has trained. No-one is happier than me, but the challenge is to back that up in the last eight games.’
MANAGER’S VIEW
Matt Taylor talking to ‘Devon Live’about the character his squad have shown in recent weeks, despite injuries and illnesses. ‘The players had Monday off because it has been a real slog. But in terms of the points return through February and March (27 from 12 games), it has been absolutely fantastic. I am proud of the performances, the effort and the way the group has approached games. We never make excuses, but we have to be understanding of the current squad situation. There are different ways to get points and we have shown a side to us in the past few weeks that I have really liked.’
THE COUNTY CONNECTION
County have met City more than any other club in our history, just edging the series with 46 victories to Exeter’s 45 in the 130 encounters in all competitions. Exeter’s first trip to Newport, 101 years ago last month, saw Geordie Harry Dobson, who had starred for Coventry in a 10-1 thrashing of County four seasons earlier, score twice to complete a Southern League First Division double following a 2-1 win in Devon four months earlier. Exeter returned to Newport after a quarter of a century away in March 2014, when the teams fought out a 1-1 draw. Twenty first century encounters between the teams are: Season Competition Home Away

MEET THE PLAYERS
EXETER CITY WITH PHIL TANNER 01 Cameron Dawson
04 Nigel Atangana
On loan for the season from Sheffield Wednesday, his hometown club who he joined at the age of 15, and has missed only one League Two game so far. Cameron, 26, has played 65 games for the Owls in the EFL since his debut in 2013 and won two England caps at U18 and three at U19. Previous loan spells took him to Plymouth Argyle, Alfreton Town - then in the Conference Wycombe Wanderers and Chesterfield.
French box-to-box player who adds steel to the midfield. Nigel played lower-league football at home before coming to notice with our old rivals Havant & Waterlooville and was picked up by their neighbours Portsmouth. He spent a season and a half at Fratton Park before joining Leyton Orient and signed for Exeter in May 2019, turning down an extension at Cheltenham where he had spent two seasons.
GOALKEEPER
02 Jake Caprice DEFENDER
Signed from Tranmere Rovers ahead of last season. Jake was at right back when they pipped County in the 2019 League Two playoff final. The Londoner, 28, started his career at Crystal Palace and moved on to Blackpool, from where he had loan spells at Dagenham, St Mirren and Tamworth. He then joined Lincoln City on a permanent basis and was with Woking and Leyton Orient before joining Tranmere.
03 Jack Sparkes DEFENDER
Returned in January from a brief loan to Torquay United. From Exmouth, Jack came through the youth ranks and made his debut early in 2017-18 aged only 16. In 2018-19 he went out on loan to Chippenham Town and to Salisbury, where he ended the campaign. A serious knee injury against County at St James Park in 2019-20 kept him out until the lockdown-delayed playoffs but he then played 50 games last season.

MIDFIELDER
06 Sam Stubbs DEFENDER
Described by boss Matt Taylor as “an old-school centre-half”, the 22-year-old signed on a free from Fleetwood Town in January last year and agreed a two-and-a-halfyear deal. Sam had joined Fleetwood from Middlesbrough that September after loans to Notts County, Hamilton Academical and Den Haag in the Netherlands. He is the son of former Bolton Wanderers, Celtic and Everton defender Alan Stubbs.
07 Matt Jay MIDFIELDER
Club captain and consistent scorer from midfield, with 14 goals in 44 games this season in all competitions after netting 20 last term. A local lad from Torbay and a product of City’s academy, Matt broke into the first team in 2017-18 with 22 appearances in all competitions. Known for his technical ability and quick feet, he has also had loan spells at Weston-super-Mare, Hayes & Yeading United and Truro City.

08 Archie Collins
15 Kieran Phillips
Versatile player up front, just behind the strikers, wide right, wide left or in central midfield. Archie, from Bridgwater, signed his first pro contract in April 2018 having already made his debut in the EFL Trophy. The 2018-19 campaign was a real breakthrough for the youngster as he turned out 33 times. He has been a fixture in the side since then and has now passed 150 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight.
On loan from hometown club Huddersfield Town and made his debut last month. Kieran joined Everton from Huddersfield as a junior and at one stage missed more than two years of football after a double knee fracture. He moved back to Yorkshire in January 2020 on loan and made the switch permanent the following summer. He spent the first half of this season on loan at Walsall, appearing against County twice.
10 Sam Nombe
17 Kyle Taylor
Signed a three-year contract when he moved from MK Dons in July for an undisclosed fee in July. Sam is having an excellent campaign and in September-October scored in six successive L2 games, including our 2-2 draw at St James Park. Having come through the Dons’ academy he made 21 appearances in L1 in 2019-20, scoring five, and spent last season on loan at Luton after earlier loans at Oxford City and Maidenhead.
Suffered a serious knee injury last month and we wish him a speedy return. Kyle joined the Grecians from Bournemouth on deadline day in August, signing on a free on a three-year deal. He joined the Cherries’ academy aged 12 and helped win the EFL Youth Alliance Cup in 2017. He spent a short period on loan at Forest Green in 2019-20, making six appearances, before 31 games on loan for Southend last season.
MIDFIELDER
STRIKER
12 Joshua Key MIDFIELDER
Wingback who has already played almost 40 games this season. Now 22 and reportedly coveted by bigger clubs, Josh went to school in Exeter and signed for the academy as an under-16 when Torquay United closed theirs. Like many of City’s youngsters he has acquired valuable experience on loan at leading local non-league clubs, in his case totalling some 80 games at Bideford and across two seasons with Tiverton Town.
14 Timothee Dieng MIDFIELDER
Summer arrival from relegated Southend, where he topped 100 appearances and was captain when Sol Campbell was manager. Tim can also play at centreback. He signed for Southend after turning down an extension at Bradford City in 2018, having made 78 appearances in two seasons there. Before joining the Yorkshire club he was at Oldham for two years, arriving at Boundary Park from Brest in his native France.
STRIKER
MIDFIELDER
18 Offrande Zanzala STRIKER
January signing on loan from Barrow, for whom he played against County in October. Offrande joined them last summer from Carlisle. Born in the Republic of Congo, he joined Derby’s academy at 12. He made his senior debut in 2016 on loan to Stevenage and had further loans to Chester and Accrington, then made the latter move permanent. After 10 goals in 51 games he moved on to Crewe and then Carlisle.
20 Jevani Brown STRIKER
Joined from Colchester United, where he netted 11 last season. With Peterborough as a youngster, Jevani dropped into non-league. After bagging a head-turning 19 goals in 20 matches for St Neots in the Southern League, midway through 2016-17 he made a seamless transition to the EFL with Cambridge United. He went on loan from there to Forest Green in January 2020, only for the season to be curtailed.

21 Callum Rowe
29 Harry Kite
Recalled last month from a loan at Bath City in National League South after Kyle Taylor sustained a season-ending injury. Callum joined the Grecians in July from Aston Villa. He was one of a number of youngsters called up to the first team for an FA Cup tie against Liverpool last season following an outbreak of Covid amongst the senior players and provided the assist for Villa’s shock opener in a 4-1 loss.
Twenty appearances so far this season as of the time of writing 14 in League Two and six cup ties. Harry signed as a professional at St James Park in February 2018, having already made his debut in the EFL Trophy. Like several other youth team products he has spent time away on loan, with a lengthy spell in 2018-19 at Dorchester Town and all the truncated 2019-20 campaign with Taunton Town.
22 Harry Lee
31 Josh Coley
Signed his first professional contract ahead of this season. Maintaining City’s record for developing young players, Harry made it onto the bench at the age of only 15 when the Grecians suffered an injury crisis early last term. He made his debut in the EFL Trophy this season and saved two penalties in a shootout win against Cheltenham Town and had a month on loan at Southern League Dorchester from October.
Joined in June 2021. Josh, 23, is the latest wearer of the number as a player whose wages are fully or part-funded by City fans under the banner of The 1931 Fund, named after the year of a famous FA Cup run. He has a long CV as a winger in non-league and time with Norwich City and Dunfermline to his name and arrived from Maidenhead in the National League after scoring five in 37 appearances last season.
DEFENDER
GOALKEEPER
26 Pierce Sweeney DEFENDER
Left briefly last summer and signed for Swindon, but returned almost immediately. Pierce was spotted at Bray Wanderers near Dublin by the late Eamonn Dolan, former City manager and then head of Reading’s academy. The Irish U21 cap helped Reading win the U21 Premier League Cup in 2013-14. He joined City on trial ahead of the 2016-17 season and was then signed as The 1931 Fund’s supporter-funded player.
27 Jonathan Grounds DEFENDER
Left back or centreback who began with his local club Middlesbrough, making 33 league appearances across five years. Jonathan also spent time on loan to Norwich, Hibernian, Chesterfield and Yeovil before signing for Oldham on a free in 2012. Subsequent moves took him to Birmingham City, where he was a regular for four seasons, Bolton Wanderers on a whole-season loan in 2018-19 and Swindon Town last season .

34 Alex Hartridge DEFENDER
Twenty-two-year-old in his second full season as a regular at the back. Alex put pen to paper on his first full contract in April 2017 and made his league debut in December 2018. He normally plays at left back or on the left side of central defence and spent most of the 2019-20 season on a series of loans at Conference South side Bath City. Before that he also had multiple stints with Truro City across three seasons.
39 Cheick Diabate DEFENDER
Described by City’s website as “an aggressive ball-winning centre half who really values defending and protecting the box”. Cheick signed as a scholar after being freed by Stevenage as an under-16. He first appeared in a matchday squad when Exeter won an EFL Trophy group game here in October 2019, but didn’t come on. He started this season on loan at Truro City and made his EFL debut in January after being recalled.

40 Scott Brown GOALKEEPER
Player-coach who has so far featured once this season, signed after topping 140 games for Port Vale. Scott was with Wolves, Welshpool Town and Bristol City before making his debut in the EFL with Cheltenham in 2006. After some 300 appearances he joined Aberdeen, where he was twice a runner-up in the Scottish Premier, then he joined Wycombe and was ever-present when they were promoted from League Two.
MANAGER
MATT TAYLOR
Divisional Manager of the Month for February. City have a great record of giving managers time in the job and Matt is now the longest-serving boss in League Two, discounting Simon Weaver whose tenure at Harrogate dates back to their non-league days. He was appointed on 1 June 2018 as successor to Paul Tisdale, who was himself by far the longest-serving manager in the EFL when he left for MK Dons. Matt was a nominee for Manager of the Month after his first month in charge and City finished just one point outside the playoff zone in his first season. He went on to win the awards for both December and April in 2019-20 and steered City to the delayed playoff final, where they lost to Northampton Town. Recently turned 40, he made more than 150 appearances for the Grecians as a tough-tackling centre back so is a popular figure among the St James Park faithful. He helped win back-to-back promotions before going on to play for Charlton Athletic, Cheltenham Town and County, where he made a handful of appearances six seasons ago but struggled with injury. Matt started his playing career in Lancashire at Burscough - at first as a goalkeeper - and helped them win the FA Trophy in 2002-03. After several years at non-league level including time with Team Bath he got his break at Exeter in 2007 and helped them to promotion from the Conference in his first season, when he made 46 appearances and scored nine goals. Promotion to League One followed immediately. After leaving Rodney Parade he was briefly with Bath City, then returned to Exeter in the autumn of 2016 as a defensive coach before becoming U23s manager in 2017-18.
